The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else. The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish. When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids; after that founders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken. Finally, the rubbish will pass under magnets(磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel;the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage. The first full-scale giant recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.十五年内英国不列颠其他国家也应该积极建设大型工业综合体,以回收废物。

If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the callshows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephonecalls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it’s a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different cultures that treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, it would be too impolite.A person who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.31. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us become angry more easily. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. It is sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution. The earth is our home. We must take care of it. If people are late for job interviews, appointments, or classes, they are often viewed as unreliable and irresponsible. In the business world, “time is money” and companies may fine their executives for tardiness to business meetings. Of course, it is not always possible to be punctual. Social and business etiquette (礼节) also provides rules for late arrivals. Keeping a date of a friend waiting beyond ten to twenty minutes is considered rude. On the other hand, arrivingthirty minutes late to some parties is acceptable.Respecting deadlines is also important in academic and professional circles. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. In the United States, it is important to be on time for an appointment, a class, a meeting, etc. However, this may not be true in all countries. An American professor discovered this difference while teaching a class in a Brazilian(巴西的)university. The two-hour class was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and end at 12. On the first day, when the professor arrived on time, no one was in the classroom. Many students came after 10 a.m. Several arrived after 10:30 a.m. Two students came after 11 a.m. Although all the students greeted the professor as they arrived, few apologized for their lateness. Were these students being rude? He decided to study the students' behavior. The professor talked to American and Brazilian students about lateness in both an informaland a formal situation: at a lunch with a friend and in university calls respectively. He gave them an example and asked them how they would react. If they had a lunch appointment with a friend, the average American student showed clearly lateness as 19 minutes after the agreed time. On the other hand, the average Brazilian student would be 33 minutes late.In an American university, students are expected to arrive at the appointed hour. In contrast,in Brazil, neither the teacher nor the students always arrive at the appointed hour. Classes not only begin at the scheduled time in the United States, but also end at the scheduled time. The parents of foreign teens have even higher expectations of their children than Chinese parents. 62% of Chinese fathers and 66% of Chinese mothers have high expectations of their children at high school age. They rank third and fourth among fathers and mothers of four countries. Japanese mothers top the list with 76% having high expectations, while 70% of Korean fathers expect too much of their children. Japanese teens are the most deeply troubled by their parents constantly comparing them with other kids. The survey also found that Chinese students are the most satisfied with their parents. Theyblame them less, and also receive less criticism than those from the other three countries. However, satisfaction doesn't mean they are happy. Of the four countries, Chinese children are not the happiest at home. They get the least praise from their parents and they don't feel able to express their unhappiness to them,Results from the survey show that in spite of different cultural backgrounds, generation gapsexist in many countries other than China. Soon you may be able to throw your wallet away and pay for things with a quick wave ofyour smart phone over an electronic scanner. In January, Starbucks announced that customers could start using their phones to buy coffeein 6,800 of its stores. This is the first pay-by-phone practice in the U.S., but we're likely to seemore wireless payment alternatives as something called near field communication (NFC) gets into America's consumer electronics. Last December, some new smart phones which contain an NFCchip were introduced to the public.Already in use in parts of Asia and Europe, NFC allows shoppers to wave their phones a fewinches above a payment terminal —a contact-free system built for speed and convenience. But before NFC becomes widely adopted in the U.S., a few problems need to be worked out, like who will get to collect the profitable transaction fees. Although some credit card providers have been experimenting with wave-and-pay systems that use NFC-enabled credit cards, cell-phone service providers may try to muscle their way into the point-of-sale (POS) market. Three big cell-phone service providers have formed a joint venture that will go into operation over the next 15 months. Its goal is “to lead the U.S. payments industry from cards to mobile phones.”The other big NFC issue, apart from how payments will be processed, is security. Forinstance, what's to stop a thief from digitally pickpocketing you? “We're still not at the point where an attacker can just brush against you in a crowd and steal all the money out of your phone.”says Jimmy Shah, a mobile-security researcher. “Users may also be able to set transaction limits, perhaps requiring a password to be entered for larger purchases.”Are you still uneasy about this digital-wallet business? Keep in mind that if you lose yoursmart phone, it can be located on a map and remotely disabled. Plus, your phone can be password protected. Your wallet isn't.26. What is predicted to happen in the U.S.?A) The expansion of cell-phone companies.B) The boom of pay-by-phone business.C) The disappearance of credit cards.D) The increase of Starbucks sales.27. Recently, a Chinese new law requires that all adults should regularly visit and take care of their parents. If they don't do so, they break the law. The new law, however, has given rise to a public debate on whether it is possible. Many people doubt whether the law is enforceable, because it does not clarify how often people have to visit their parents. In addition, working people who live far away from their parents will find it difficult to take leave to go home regularly. Even so, some scholars have praised the law because it is aimed at arousing people's awareness of loving the elderly and reminding them to always keep their obligations in mind and visit their parents frequently.Part V Writing (30 minutes)Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a composition entitled Online Learning or Offline Learning. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition (学会) of each new skill-the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child: This might happen at any stage. A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.Patents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child’s own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality (道德). Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practise what they preach (说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.11. Eagerly watching the child’s acquisition of new skills ________.A) should be avoidedB) is universal among parentsC) sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD) will make him lose interest in learning new things12. In the process of children’s learning new skills parents ________.A) should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB) should not expect too much of themC) should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD) should create as many learning opportunities as possible13. The second paragraph mainly tells us that ________.A) parents should be strict with their childrenB) parental controls reflect only the needs of the parents and the values of the communityC) parental restrictions vary, and are not always enforced for the benefit of the children aloneD) parents vary in their strictness towards their children according to the situation14. The word “precept” (Line 3, Para. 3) probably means “________”.A) idea B) punishmentC) behavior D) instruction15. In moral matters, parents should ________.A) observe the rules themselvesB) be aware of the marked difference between adults and childrenC) forbid things which have no foundation in moralityD) consistently ensure the security of their childrenPassage TwoQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage. These days we take for granted the wide variety of music available on the radio. But, this wasn’t always the case. In the early days of radio, stations were capable of broadcasting only a narrow range of sounds, which was all right for the human voice but music didn’t sound very good. There was also a great deal of crackling and other static noises that further interfered with the quality of the sound.A man named Edwin Armstrong, who was a music lover, set out to change this. He invented FM radio, a technology that allowed stations to send a broad range of frequencies that greatly improved the quality of the music. Now, you’d think that this would have made him a millionaire; it didn’t. Radio stations at that time had invested enormous amounts of money in the old technology. So the last thing they wanted was to invest millions more in the new technology. Nor did they want to have to compete with other radio stations that had a superior sound and could put them out of business. So they pressured the Federal Communications Commission —the department of the United States government that regulates radio stations — to put restrictive regulations on FM radio. The result was that its use was limited to a very small area around New England. Of course as we all know, Edwin Armstrong’s FM technology eventually prevailed and was adopted by thousands of stations round the world. But this took years of court battles and he never saw how itcame to affect the lives of almost everyone.16. What is the passage mainly about?A) The invention of musical recording equipment.B) The role of government in mass communications.C) The emergence of a new technology.D) The similarities between old and new radio stations.17. What was the main disadvantage of early radio broadcasting?A) It was very expensive.B) The sound quality was poor.C) It could only transmit a human voice.D) The signal was transmitted over a small area.18. What was the purpose of Edwin Armstrong by inventing FM radio?A) To make it possible for radio stations to broadcast a broad range of sounds.B) To make other radio stations spend a large sum of money on more research.C) To make himself world-famous and therefore earn more money.D) To make radio stations compete with one another.19. Why did the owners of radio stations react negatively to Armstrong’s invention?A) Its use was too strictly regulated. B) They thought it was unsafe.C) It threatened their business. D) It was of poor quality.20. What does the passage imply about Edwin Armstrong?A) He became a millionaire from his invention.B) He was an accomplished musician.C) He worked for the Federal Communications Commission.D) He died before FM became popular.Passage ThreeQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.Psychologist George Spilich and colleagues at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, decided to find out whether, as many smokers say, smoking helps them to “think and concentrate. Spilich put young non-smokers, active smokers and smokers deprived (被剥夺) of cigarettes through a series of tests. In the first test, each subject (试验对象) sat before a computer screen and pressed a key as soon as he or she recognized a target letter among a grouping of 96. In this simple test, smokers, deprived smokers and non-smokers performed equally well. The next test was more complex, requiring all to scan sequences of 20 identical letters and respond the instant one of the letters transformed into a different one. Non-smokers were faster, but under the stimulation of nicotine (尼古丁), active smokers were faster than deprived smokers. In the third test of short-term memory, non-smokers made the fewest errors, but deprived smokers committed fewer errors than active smokers. The fourth test required people to read a passage, then answer questions about it. Non-smokers remembered 19 percent more of the most important information than active smokers, and deprived smokers bested those who had smoked a cigarette just before testing. Active smokers tended not only to have poorer memories but also had trouble separating important information from insignificant details.“As our tests became more complex,” s ums up Spilich, “non-smokers performed better than smokers by wider and wider margins” He predicts, “smokers might perform adequately at m any jobs-until they got complicated. A smoking airline pilot could fly adequately if no problems arose, but if something went wrong, smoking might damage his mental capacity.”21. The purpose of George Spilich’s experiments is ________.A) to test whether smoking has a positive effect on the mental capacity of smokersB) to show how smoking damages people’s mental capacityC) to prove that smoking affects people’s regular performanceD) to find out whether smoking helps people’s short-term memory22. George Spilich’s experiment was conducted in such a way as to ________.A) compel the subjects to separate major information from minor detailsB) put the subjects through increasingly complex testsC) check the effectiveness of nicotine on smokersD) register the prompt responses of the subjects23. The word “bested” (Line 3, Para. 5) most probably means ________.A) beat B) enviedC) caught up with D) made the best of24. Which of the following statements is true?A) Active smokers in general performed better than deprived smokers.B) Active smokers responded more quickly than the other subjects.C) Non-smokers were not better than other subjects in performing simple tasks.D) Deprived smokers gave the slowest responses to the various tasks.25. They dance, drink, parade, and feast. A traditional meal includes meat, cabbage and a special Irish beer called Guinness.St. Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday that can be traced back more than one thousand years ago, and it is related to a boy named St. Patrick who became an Irish saint when he grew up.He was born to a wealthy family in Wales around the year 385 AD. But when he was sixteen, a band of raiders(劫掠者)took him as a slave to what is now the neighboring island of Ireland.Patrick lived there for several years. Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “no”. It is not the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that make him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter. You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate, how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step further, he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer can be confirmed by other persons. He also works to fit the answer he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works. The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist observes in a demonstration must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics. The accuracy of this math ematics was later tested through investigations, Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations that may test his investigations. (263 words)41. What makes a scientist according to the passage?A. The tools he uses.B. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker,he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort. This attitude toward manual(体力的)labor is now still seen many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even luxuriously(豪华地)furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterward, furthermore the dinner will not consist merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living,or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education.46. From Para.1, we know that in America _______.A. people tend to have a high opinion of the self-made manB. people can always rise to the top through their own effortsC. college professors win great respect from common workersD. people feel painful to mention their fathers as labors47. According to the passage, the hostess cooks dinner herself mainly because ________A. servants in American are hard to getB. she takes pride in what she can do herselfC. she can hardly afford servantsD. it is easy to prepare a meal with canned food48. We can infer from the last paragraph that ________.A) smokers should not expect to become airline pilotsB) smoking in emergency cases causes mental illnessC) no airline pilots smoke during flightsD) smokers may prove unequal to handing emergency casesPassage FourQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.St. Patrick’s Day (March 17) is one of the most important holidays in Ireland. To keep up their work they must read letters, reports, trade publications, interoffice communications, not to mention newspapers and magazines: a never-ending flood of words. In getting a job or advancing in one, the ability to read and comprehend quickly can mean the difference between success and failure. Yet the unfortunate fact is that most ofus are poor readers. Most of us develop poor reading habits at an early age, and never get over them. The main problem lies in language itself – words. Single words have little meaning until they are combined into phrases, sentences and paragraphs. Unfortunately, however, the untrained reader does not read groups of words. He reads one word at a time, often regressing to reread words or passages. Regression, or looking back over what you have just read, is a common bad habit in reading. Another habit which slows down the speed of reading is vocalization – sounding each word either orally or mentally as one reads. To overcome these bad habits, some reading clinics use a device called accelerator (加速器), which moves a bar down the page at a predetermined speed. The bar is set at a slightly faster rate than the reader finds comfortable, in order to "stretch" him. The accelerator forces the reader to read fast, making word-by-word reading, regression and vocalization virtually impossible. At first, comprehension is sacrificed for speed. But when you learn to read ideas, you will not only read faster, but your comprehension will improve. Many people have found their reading skills improved a lot after some training.1.According to the passage, today many people no longer read for ________.A. newsB. their workC. informationD. entertainment2.Most people can't read and comprehend quickly mainly because ________.A. they don't read groups of wordsB. they don't like to be trained in reading skillsC. they don't realize they have poor reading habitsD. they don't understand words when put together3.The following are all bad reading habits EXCEPT ________.A. regressionB. reading for ideas onlyC. vocalizationD. word-by-word reading4.How does an accelerator help people to read?A. The reader reads fast, but he understands everything he reads.B. The reader reads slowly and he understands everything he reads.C. The reader reads fast without understanding everything he reads.D. The reader reads slowly, but he doesn't understand everything he reads.Questions 6 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog.Everybody lies. It may only be "white lies", but everyone tells lies or "omits the truth" sometimes. People start lying at around age 4 to 5 when children gain an awareness of the use and power of language. This first lying is not ill-natured, but rather to find out, or test, what can be controlled in a child's environment. Eventually children begin to use lying to get out of trouble or get something they want. White lies, those told to protect someone's feelings, are not a big deal at all. The person, however, who seems to feel forced to lie about both small and large stuff, has a problem. They lie to protect themselves, look good, gain financially or socially and avoid punishment. A much moretroubling group is those who lie a lot, and knowingly, for personal gain. Lying often gets worse with the passage of time. When you get away with a lie, it often forces you to continue your lies. Why do we dislike liars so much? It's a matter of trust. When people lie, they have broken a bond – an unspoken agreement to treat others as we would like to be treated. Serious lying often makes it impossible for us to trust another person again. Because the issue (问题) of trust is at risk, coming clean about the lie as soon as possible is the best way to mend fences. If the truth only comes out once it is forced, repair of trust is far less likely. As a parent, the most important message you can send to your children about lying is that you always – always – want them to come clean with you. No matter how small a lie they have told, remind them that you would always rather hear the truth, no matter how bad it is, than be cheated. Tell them there is really nothing better in your relationship than your trust of each other.6.According to the passage, the worst liars are those who ________.A. tell white liesB. feel forced to tell liesC. lie a lot for personal gainD. began to lie at a very young age7.What's the writer's opinion about telling "white lies"?A. They do not matter too much.B. They are necessary in our life.C. They do not cause any problems.D. They are as bad as any other lies.8.Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. With time passing by, we will forget the lies people tell.B. When a person lies, he will feel uneasy and stop lying soon.C. Once a person tells a big lie, we will not trust him any more.D. If lies are not found out, probably the liar will continue to lie.9.Why do we dislike liars so much?A. Because they do not trust others.B. Because they lie for personal gains.C. Because they betray our trust in them.D. Because they lie to avoid punishment.10.What should you do as a parent when you find your children have lied?A. Tell them to learn to trust other people.B. Tell them to explain immediately why they have lied.C. Ask them to forget about the past and not to lie any more.D. Make them realize they should always tell the truth.Questions 11 to 15 are based on the same passage or dialog.School buildings themselves can show liberal (开明的) or conservative views about what should go on in a classroom. The earliest schools had separate classrooms for different grades. The rooms were laid out formally, with pupils' desks fastened to the floor in straight rows facing the teacher's desk. Clearly, such schools reflected a teacher-and-subject-centered view of education.Schools of the next generation had more open space, and most had movable desks. They also often provided special rooms or areas for science, art, music, and physical education. There were still separate rooms for different grade levels, however, and the desks still were likely to be formally arranged. That is, the schoolroom was still largely designed to carry out the old-school program, which involved grade levels, uniform time blocks, and study of subject matters. Newer subjects, notnewer teaching methods, accounted for most of what was new in school design. The first school buildings constructed to encourage liberal teaching methods appeared in themid-1950s. Folding interior (内部的) walls permitted the flexible use of space to encouragelarge-group, small-group, or individual instruction. Some provided carrels for individual study, areas for team teaching, and centers for programmed instruction. In the newest buildings called open schools, the use of space is even more flexible. Areas within the buildings can be readily expanded for program changes, and used for many kinds of functions. One should remember, though, the physical layout (布局) of a school cannot decide whether it has the conservative or liberal teaching practices. What determines whether the classroom is liberal or conservative is the spirit and attitude of the teacher.11.What is the main idea of this passage?A. School buildings reflect the improvement in education quality.B. The physical layout of a school should improve teaching practices.C. School buildings can reflect liberal or conservative views about education.D. Teachers' spirit and attitude determines the physical layout of the classroom.12.What's the biggest difference between the earliest and the second-generation schools?A. Subjects were newer in the latter as compared with the former.B. Teaching methods were newer in the latter as compared with the former.C. Classrooms were laid out formally in the former and informally in the latter.D. The former had separate classrooms for different grades while the latter didn't.13.The word "carrel" in Paragraph 3 most probably refers to ________.A. a room with small spaceB. a room with folding wallsC. a room with liberal instructionsD. a room with conservative instructions14.According to the passage, we may infer that the newest school buildings reflect ________.A. a subject-centered view of educationB. a student-centered view of educationC. a teacher-centered view of educationD. a practice-centered view of education15.What of the following is implied in the passage?A. In the newest teaching buildings, classrooms are much bigger.B. In the schools of second generation, different grades were put in separate classrooms.C. In the earliest school classrooms, students' desks were fixed to the floor.D. Before the mid-1950s, school buildings were built in a conservative way.Test 21.The university decided to increase the ________of the lecture hall, which has only 200 seats.A. abilityB. capacityC. facilityD. faculty2.Smart phones – with cameras and color screens– can ________ images and data using wireless network technology.A. evolveB. departC. transmitD. assure3.Don't take someone you get to know from theInternet to your house no matter how ________ he sounds.A. boldB. genuineC. flexibleD. available4.This kind of exercise will ________ yourcreativity, renew your energy, and unlock yourpotential.A. bindB. yieldC. embraceD. stimulate5.We teachers do not consider it wise to ________our students with all sorts of exams, tests andquizzes.A. loadB. annoyC. sampleD. explore6.I'll be happy to help you, ________ you won't takeup too much of my time.A. as well asB. as long asC. as far asD. as soon as7.He makes his students ________ knowledgethrough various kinds of interesting activities.A. studyB. learnC. achieveD. acquire8.For years, scientists have debated the ________dangers of building another nuclear plant after the terrible accident.B. potentialC. fascinatingD. genuine9.It was a worthwhile attempt ________ it failed toachieve its purpose that we had hoped for.A. in the endB. now thatC. all at onceD. even though10.Travel in space can be very exciting; ________, itcan also be boring and lonely at times.A. soB. howeverC. thusD. therefore11.Politicians should not ________ in businessaffairs that might affect their political judgment.A. engageB. embraceD. treasure12.I wish to ________ a master's degree in electricengineering after I graduate from college.A. pledgeB. exploreC. pursueD. approach13.There is no greater importance ________cultivating independence in children.A. inB. thanC. ofD. with14.Don't worry too much, Jane. Baseball fans wear their official team T-shirts and jackets everywhere, sometimes even to work. Then, whenever the team offers a free item, the fans rush to get it. In addition, baseball fans cover the walls of their rooms with their favorite players' pictures. When they go to a game, which they do as often as possible, the true baseball fans put on their team colors, grab their team flags, pin on their team buttons. At the game, these fans form a section, constantly encouraging their favorite players and enthusiastically responding to every cheer flashed on the electronic scoreboard.Baseball fans, in addition to behaving crazily, are also extremely interested in things of small importance. Every day, they turn to the sports page of the newspaper and study last night's statistics. Their bookshelves are full of books and newspapers with information of their team. They delight in remembering such unimportant facts as who is left-handed and what food their favorite player likes.Last of all, baseball fans are extremely loyal to the team of their choice. This strong loyalty makes fans dangerous, for anyone who dares to say to a loyal fan that some other team is better could be risking physical damage. Incidents of violence on the baseball field have increased in recent years and are a matter of growing concern. From mid-October through March, baseball fans are like any other human beings. They pay their taxes, take out the garbage, and complain about the high cost of living or the latest home repair. But when April comes, the colors and radios go on, the record books come off the shelves, and the devotion returns. For the true baseball fan, another season of craziness has begun.1.According to the passage, which of the following behaviors do baseball fans have?A. Covering their walls with their team's flags.B. From mid-October to March.D. From April to mid-October.Questions 6 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog.Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Some explode with anger, and scream and shout. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger. Many doctors think that repressing anger is more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They say that when a person is angry, the brain gives out the same hormones (荷尔蒙) as that are produced during tense and nervous situations. They speed the heart rate and raise blood pressure, so the person feels excited and ready to act. Repressing these feelings will only make the feelings continue, and this can lead to many medical problems. To prevent these problems, these doctors suggest letting the anger out by expressing it freely. But recently some other doctors question this. They say that people who express anger repeatedly and violently become, in fact, more but not less angry. And this could cause medical problems. However, some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger strongly may be more likely to develop heart diseases, and that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.Doctors say the solution is to learn how to deal with anger. The first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, and then to decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, do not express your anger while angry. Wait until your anger has cooled down, and express yourself calmly and reasonably. Doctors also say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry, for laughter is much healthier than anger.6.What is the main idea of this passage?A. Anger should be dealt with in a proper way.B. Different people deal with anger in different ways.C. Doctors suggest dealing with anger by repressing it.D. The best way to deal with anger is to laugh when angry.7.According to the passage, which of the following about hormones is correct?A. Hormones will cause people to get anxious.B. Hormones will increase when one gets angry.C. The brain produces hormones when one's blood pressure rises.D. The brain produces hormones when one has medical problems.8.Some doctors argue that people who often let the anger out would become ________.A. strongerB. more violentC. angrierD. more dangerous9.One correct way to deal with anger is to ________.A. say nothing no matter how angry you areB. express anger openly and freely right awayC. express your anger immediately but calmlyD. think about whether it's worth getting angry10.According to the passage, which of the following is true?A. Expressing anger by screaming can be as dangerous as repressing anger.B. Repressing anger is more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it.C. People may have heart diseases if they don't express their anger right away.D. People should express anger before looking into the real cause of their anger.Questions 11 to 15 are based on the same passage or dialog.Manners evolved differently in different cultures. In earlier times there was a tendency for manners to become increasingly formal, and this was often viewed as progress. In the 18th and 19th centuries having good manners was seen as an important part of one's education and social class, and it was necessary to be taken as a lady or a gentleman to get ahead in the world. In the 20th and 21st centuries, manners have gradually become more relaxed and informal. The hosting of dinners and other social gatherings are no longer the exclusive privilege of the wealthy elite (精英), and private clubs are being gradually replaced by more open meeting places. So the manners of the salon (沙龙) are gradually combining with the manners of the pub. Clothing is a good indication of the changes in manners, as can be seen in the following examples. It is surprising that the wearing of hats indoors by males is once again becoming acceptable. Students in North America often wear baseball caps to class. In many countries the wearing of hats indoors by males was once acceptable even in very polite society, but over the years this became considered as a lower-class behavior and was thus discouraged in both the middle and upper classes. The young people who wear hats indoors do not realize they are actually restarting a very old cultural tradition.A comparable development for females is the wearing of jeans. Many females now wear jeans on a daily basis, either at home or at work. Some see this as a symbolic declaration that they are now modern women, not girls or ladies. Some girls, like boys, wear baseball caps both indoors and outdoors.Sneakers and shorts are now acceptable for either males or females in a variety of non-athletic situations. Some companies have rules requiring informal dress such as jeans or sneakers on Fridays (called "dress-down Friday" or "casual Friday"), and others permit it almost all the time. In these companies, and many others, it is acceptable to call the bosses by their first names.11.What does the passage mainly talk about?A. Changes of manners over time.B. Formal manners in the earlier times.C. Different manners in different cultures.D. Development of manners in different classes.12.In the 20th and 21st centuries, _________.A. manners are not as formal as in the pastB. manners in a pub are getting more and more formalC. proper clothing is a good indication of good mannersD. rich people no longer behave formally in social gatherings13.According to the passage, "the manners of the salon" in paragraph 2 most likely refers to__________.A. What many of them don't realize, however, is that living in another country for a long period of time may cause moderate to severe feelings of anxiety. Culture shock is the term given to the feelings of loss, surprise, and confusion (困惑) that many people feel when they live abroad. Scientists have noted that everyone experiences cultureshock in different ways and for different amounts of time. However, there are four general stages of culture shock that can occur in any order, including excitement, rejection, regression, and recovery. The first stage of culture shock is typical excitement because the travelers are interested in all of the differences found in the new country. They may be amazed at the beautiful new scenery, enjoy the delicious new food, and simply enjoy experiencing the new sights and sounds. While the excitement stage is fun and exciting, it also ends fairly quickly as the travelers meet difficulty adjusting (适应) to life in the new country.Because life is so different in the new country, the foreigners experience many unexpected difficulties as they enter the second stage of culture shock, the rejection stage. This is the time when the foreigners begin to feel upset because of the differences, and they may start to complain about the host country. In the regression stage, the foreigners lovingly remember their home country. They forget about all of the troubles and problems they had in their home country and wish they could return. At this stage, the foreigners will try to regress, or go back, to their home country in some ways.Once the regression stage passes, they move into the fourth stage, the recovery stage. In this stage, they become used to the new culture. The differences are not new or troublesome anymore, and they begin to accept the customs of the new country and feel more comfortable.1.What is the passage mainly about?A. Various periods of culture shock.B. Four ways to overcome culture shock.C. Difficulties in facing the culture shock.D. Differences in people's reaction to culture shock.2.According to the text, which of the following may NOT be so exciting for a foreigner who justarrived in a new country?A. Tasting new food.B. Each passage is followed by some questions orunfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). Youshould decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child's acquisition (学会) of eachnew skill-the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading andwriting. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child: This might happen at any stage. Ababy might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is leftalone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life andhis desire to find out new things for himself.Patents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may beespecially strict in money matters. Others are severe over times of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and thevalues of the community as much as the child's own happiness. As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is veryimportant in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundationfor morality (道德). Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”. If they are not sincere and do not practise what they preach (说教), their children may grow confused, and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they havebeen to some extent fooled.A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents' principles and their moralscan be a dangerous disappointment.11. Eagerly watching the child's acquisition of new skills ________.A) should be avoidedB) is universal among parentsC) sets up dangerous states of worry in the childD) will make him lose interest in learning new things2模拟试题二12. In the process of children's learning new skills parents ________.A) should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they readB) should not expect too much of themC) should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their ownD) should create as many learning opportunities as possible13. The word “precept”(Line 3, Para. 3) probably means “________”.A) idea B) punishmentD) instructionC) behavior15. But, thiswasn't always the case. In the early days of radio, stations were capable of broadcasting only anarrow range of sounds, which was all right for the human voice but music didn't sound very good. There was also a great deal of crackling and other static noises that further interfered with thequality of the sound.A man named Edwin Armstrong, who was a music lover, set out to change this. He inventedFM radio, a technology that allowed stations to send a broad range of frequencies that greatly improved the quality of the music. Now, you'd think that this would have made him a millionaire; it didn't. Radio stations at that time had invested enormous amounts of money in the old technology. So the last thing they wanted was to invest millions more in the new technology. Nor did they want to have to compete with other radio stations that had a superior sound and could put them out of business. So they pressured the Federal Communications Commission —the department of the United States government that regulates radio stations —to put restrictive regulations on FM radio. The result was that its use was limited to a very small area around New England. Of courseas we all know, Edwin Armstrong's FM technology eventually prevailed and was adopted by thousands of stations round the world. But this took years of court battles and he never saw how it 3模拟试题二came to affect the lives of almost everyone.16. Why did the owners of radio stations react negatively to Armstrong's invention?A) Its use was too strictly regulated. B) They thought it was unsafe.D) It was of poor quality.C) It threatened their business.20. In the third test of short-term memory, non-smokers made the fewest errors, but deprived smokers committed fewer errors than active smokers. The fourth test required people to read a passage, then answer questions about it.Non-smokers remembered 19 percent more of the most important information than active smokers, and deprived smokers bested those who had smoked a cigarette just before testing. Active smokers tended not only to have poorer memories but also had trouble separating important information from insignificant details.“As our tests became more complex,”sums up Spilich, “non-smokers performed better than smokers by wider and wider margins”He predicts, “smokers might perform adequately at many jobs-until they got complicated. Americans spend most of their lives working. For most Americans, their work defines them: they are what they do. What happens, then, when a person can no longer work? Most Americans stop working at age sixty-five or seventy and retire. Because work is such an important part of life in this culture, retirement can be very difficult. Retirees often feel that they are useless and unproductive. Of course, some people are happy to retire, but leaving one’s job, whatever it is, is a difficult change, even for those who look forward to retiring. Retirement can also bring financial problems. Many people depend on Social Security checks every month. During their working years, employees contribute a certain percentage of their salaries to the government. Each employer also gives a certain percentage to the government. When people retire, they receive this money asincome,Their checks do not provide enough money to live on, however, because prices are increasing very rapidly. Senior citizens, those over sixty-five, have to have savings in the bank or other retirement plans to make ends meet. The rate of inflation is forcing prices higher each year; Social Security checks alone cannot cover these growing expense. The government offers some assistance, but many senior citizens have to change the life-styles after retirement. They have to spend carefully to be sure that they can afford to buy food, fuel, and other necessities.Of course, Many senior citizens are happy with their retirement. They have time to spend with their families or to enjoy their hobbies. Some continue to work part time; others do volunteer work. Some, like those in the Retired Business Executives Association, even help young people to get started in new businesses. Many retired citizens also belong to “Golden Age” groups. These organizations plan trips and social events. There are many other opportunities for retirees.在美国,工作是生活中非常重要的一部分。

Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B) C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet witha single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passageA foreigner’s first impression of the U.S. is likely to be that everyone is in a rush-often under pressure. City people appear always to be hurrying to get where they are going restlessly, seeking attention in a store, and elbowing others as they try to complete their errands (任务). Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace of life in this country.Working time is considered precious. Others in public eating places are waiting for you to finish so that they too can be served and get back to work within the time allowed. Each person hurries to make room for the next person. If you don’t, waiters will hurry you.You also find drivers will be abrupt and that people will push past you. You will miss smiles, brief conversations, and small courtesies with strangers. Don’t take it personally. This is because people value time highly, and they resent someone else “wasting”it beyond a certain courtesy point. The view of time affects the importance we attach to patience. In the American system of values, patience is not a high priority. Many of us have what might be called “a short fuse.” We begin to move restlessly about if we feel time is slipping away without some returnbe this in terms of pleasure, work value, or rest. Those coming from lands where time is looked upon differently may find this matter of pace to be one of their most difficult adjustments in both business and daily life. Many newcomers to the States will miss the opening courtesy of a business call, for example, they will miss the ritual socializing that goes with a welcoming cup of tea or coffee they may be traditional in their own country. They may miss leisurely business chats in a caféor coffeehouse. Normally, Americans do not assess their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over prolonged small talks. We seek out evidence of past performance rather than evaluate a business colleague through social courtesies. Since we generally assess and probe professionally rather thansocially, we start talking business very quickly. (348 words)11. Which of the following statements is wrong? __________A) Americans seem to be always under pressure.B) Americans attach less importance to patience.C) Americans don’t care much about ritual socializing.D) Americans are impolite to their business colleagues.12. In the fourth paragraph, “a high priority” means __________.A) a less important thing B) a first concernC) a good business D) an attractive gift13. Americans evaluate a business colleague __________.A) through social courtesy B) through prolonged business talksC) by establishing business relations D) by learning about their past performance14. This passage mainly talks about __________.A) how Americans treasure their time B) how busy Americans are every dayC) how Americans do business with foreigners D) what American way of life is like15. We can infer from the passage that the author’s tone in writing is ___________.A) critical B) ironical C) appreciative D) objectivePassage TwoQuestions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:Britain and France are separated by the English Channel, a body of water that can be crossed in as few as 20 minutes. But the cultures of the two countries sometimes seem to be miles apart.Last Thursday Britain and France celebrated the 100th anniversary(周年纪念)of the signing of a friendship agreement called the Entente Cordiality. The agreement marked a new beginning for the countries following centuries of wars and love-hate partnership. But their relationship has been ups and downs over the past century. Just last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war-which British Prime Minister Tony Blair supported despite French President Jacques Chirac speaking out against it. This discomfort is expressed in Blair and Chirac’s body language at international meetings. While the French leader often greets German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder with a hug, Blair just receives a handshake. However, some political experts say the war in Iraq could in fact have helped ties. The history of divisions may well be because of the very different ways in which the two sides see the world. But this doesn’t stop 12 million Britons taking holidays in France each year. However, only 3 million French come in the opposite direction. Surveys show that most French people feel closer to the Germans than they do to the British. And the research carried out in Britain has found that only a third of the population believes the French can be trusted. Perhaps this bad feeling comes because the British dislike France’s close relationship with Germany, or because the French are not happy with Britain’s close links with the US.Whatever the answer is, as both sides celebrate 100 years of “doubtful friendship”, they are at least able to make jokes about each other. Here’s one: What’s the best thing about Britain’s relationship with France? The English Channel. (320 words)16. For centuries, the relationship between Britain and France is ____________.A) friendly B) impolite C) brotherlyD) a mixture of love and hate17. The war in Iraq does ____________ to the relationship between France and Britain.A) good B) harmC) neither good nor harm D) both good and harm18. What does the last sentence mean?A) As long as the English Channel exists, no further disagreement will form between France and Britain.B) The English Channel can prevent anything unfriendly happening in both France and Britain.C) France and Britain are near neighbors, and this will help balance the relationship between them.D) The English Channel is the largest enemy between France and Britain.Passage ThreeQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:Reading is thought to be a kind of conversation between the reader and the text. The reader puts questions, as it were, to the text and gets answers. In the light of these he puts further questions, and so on.For most of the time this “conversation” goes on below the level of consciousness. At times, however, we become aware of it. This is usually when we are running into difficulties, when mismatch is occurring between expectations and meaning. When successful matching is being experienced, our questioning of the text continues at the unconscious level.Different people converse with the text differently. Some stay very close to the words on the page; others take off imaginatively from the words, interpreting, criticizing, analyzing and examining. The former represents a kind of comprehension which is written in the text. The latter represents higher levels of comprehension. The balance between these is important, especially for advanced readers. There is another conversation which from our point of view is equally important, and that is to do not with what is read but with how it is read. We call this a “process” conversation as opposed to a “content” conversation. It is concerned not with meaning bu t with the strategies(策略)we employ in reading. If we are an advanced reader our ability to hold a content conversation with a text is usually pretty well developed. Not so our ability to hold a process conversation. It is precisely this kind of conversation that is of importance when we are seeking to develop our reading to meet the new demands being placed upon us by studying at a higher level. (277 words)21. Reading as a kind of conversation between the reader and the text becomes conscious onlywhen __________.A) the reader’s expectations agree with what is said in the textB) the reader has trouble understanding what the author saysC) the reader asks questions and gets answersD) the reader understands a text very well22. At a lower level of comprehension, readers tend to __________.A) read a text slowlyB) read without thinking hardC) interpret a text in their own wayD) concentrate on the meaning of words only23. A “process” conversation has to do with _________.A) the application of reading strategiesB) matching our expectations with the meaning of a textC) the development of our ability to check the detailsD) determining the main idea of a text24. According to the passage, it is of great importance for readers at a higher level to maintain abalance between _________.A) conscious and unconscious levels of comprehensionB) the reader’s expectations and the meaning of a textC) lower and higher levels of comprehensionD) interpreting and criticizing a text25. If we want to develop our reading ability at an advanced level, we should __________.A) learn to use different approaches in reading different textsB) make our reading process more consciousC) pay more attention to the content of a textD) take a critical attitude towards the author’s ideasPassage FourQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:Looking back on my childhood, I am convinced that naturalists are born and not made. Although we were all brought up in the same way, my brothers and sisters soon abandoned their pressed flowers and insects. Unlike them, I had no ear for music and languages. I was not an early reader and I could not do mental math. Before World War I we spent our summer holidays in Hungary. I have only the dim memory of the house we lived in and of my room and my toys. Nor do I recall clearly the large family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins who gathered next door. But I do have a crystal-clear memory of the dogs, the farm animals, the local birds, and above all, the insects.I am a naturalist, not a scientist. I have a strong love of the natural world and my enthusiasm had led me into varied investigations. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people’s observa tions and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research. But curiosity, a keen eye, a good memory and enjoyment of the animal and plant world do not make a scientist: one of the outstanding and essential qualities required is self-discipline, a quality I lack. A scientist requires not only self-discipline but hard training, determination and a goal. A scientist, up to a point, can be made. A naturalist is born. If you can combine the two, you get the best of both worlds.(296 words)26. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark your answer on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling or swimming, or, in winter, skating or skiing (滑雪). It may be a game of some kind --- football, hockey (曲棍球), golf, or tennis. It may be mountaineering. Those who have a passion (激情) for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no manmade rules, as there are for such games, as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from manmade rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods. If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a …team game‟. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no …matches‟ between …teams‟ of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.36.The difference between a sport and a game has to do with ______.A. the kind of activityB. the kind of rulesC. the kind of uniformD. the kind of participants (参与者)37.Mountaineering can be called a team sport because ______.A. it is an Olympic eventB. teams compete against each otherC. mountaineers depend on each other while climbingD. there are 5 climbers in each team38.Mountaineers compete against ______.A. natureB. each otherC. other teamsD. international standards39.The age during which people can enjoy mountaineering ______.A. is very restrictedB. is from 20 to 30C. is governed by lawD. is limited only by individual ability and desire40.Which is the best title for the passage?A. Mountaineering is Different from Golf and FootballB. Mountaineering is More Attractive Than Other SportsC. MountaineeringD. Mountain ClimbersPassage 2Conflict, like stress, is a natural phenomenon when people interact. Conflict in some form is always present; however, it is not always negative. Conflict can be positive, for example, when you and your colleagues try to select the best possible solution to a problem. However, much more attention is given to the negative aspects of conflict. Conflict occurs when we fear the unknown. This can be very simple: someone says something in a tone of voice different from our expectations, which raises questions in our mind as to what the real meaning might be. Of course conflict can, and does, occur in much more serious circumstances. Your ability to detect and understand conflict will place you in a better position to control the situation. Conflict is often categorized in three stages. Stage one is the day-to-day irritations (恼人的事) that are easy to deal with. Stage one conflict is real but low in intensity. The intensity can increase if irritations increase and no solutions are found. Stage two is reached when the two sides become competitive. Each person protects his self-interest and fears loss of face. Stage three is reached when the objective changes from wanting to win toward wanting to hurt the other side. This stage can be explosive because other people are drawn into the conflict and sides are chosen. Problem solving is no longer a realistic method of resolution. By understanding the three stages of conflict, it will be easier for you to handle the day-to-day situations to which you are exposed. You will also be able to detect potential conflict between others in which you do not want to get involved.41.Conflict is ______.A. paid attention to because it is negativeB. only positive when occurring between colleaguesC. universally present in human interactionsD. similar to stress in every aspect42.Stage two conflict is different from stage one conflict in that ______.A. it is caused by daily disputesB. it is low in intensityC. it takes a form of competitionD. it always leads to loss of face43.The third stage can be explosive because ______.A. quarreling becomes inevitableB. it is no longer a conflict between two individualsC. people begin to hate each otherD. no solution is possible44.The ability to identify conflict ______.A. can help you make good use of conflictB. enables you to win every competitionC. can prevent conflict from occurringD. can help you deal with the situation better45.The conflict between a student and his roommate caused by different living habits is aninstance of ______.A. stage one conflictB. stage two conflictC. stage three conflictD. none of the abovePassage 3All of us communicate with one another nonverbally (不使用语言地), as well as with words. Most of the time we‟re not aware that we‟re doing it. We gesture with eyebrows or a hand, meet someone else‟s eyes and look away, change posit ions in a chair. These actions we assume are occasional. However in recent years researchers have discovered that there is a system to them almost as consistent and understandable as language. One important kind of body language is eye behavior. Americans are careful about how and when they meet one another‟s eyes. In our normal conversation, each eye contact lasts only about a second before one or both of us look away. When two Americans look searchingly into each other‟s eyes, they become more intimate. T herefore, we carefully avoid this, except in suitable situations.Researchers who are engaged in the study of communication through body movement are not prepared to spell out a precise vocabulary of gestures. When an American rubs (磨擦) his nose, it may mean he is disagreeing with someone or refusing something. But there are other possible interpretations, too. Another example: when a student in conversation with a professor holds the older man‟s eyes a little longer than is usual, it can be a sign of respe ct; it can be a challenge to the professor‟s authority (权威); it can be something else entirely. The researchers look for patterns in the situation, not for a separate meaningful gesture.Communication between human beings would be just dull if it were all done with words.46.The main idea of this article is that ______.A. study of communication through body movement is a new scienceB. body movements are as important as words in communicationC. all of us communicate with one anotherD. eye behavior is the most important part in body language47.What do researchers think of body language?A. Body language can be understood and used by people in communication.B. Body language is more important than spoken language in communication.C. Body language has been discovered in recent years.D. Body language is the study of communication through body movement.48.The word “intimate” in paragraph 2 probably means ______.A. greatB. closeC. goodD. important49.According to the passage, you make an American person feel uncomfortable, if you ______.A. meet his eyesB. avoid meeting his eyesC. stare into his eyes for one secondD. look into his eyes for a long time50.The sentence “The researchers look for patterns in the situation, not for a separate meaningfulgesture” means ______.A. the researchers explain the meaning of a gesture according to the situation in which it isusedB. the researchers believe that one gesture has only one meaningC. the researchers think that one gesture can not be used in different situationsD. the researchers look for patterns in textbooks to explain the meaning of a gesturePassage 4How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.Youth is a time when there are few tasks to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child --- things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong. When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.51.People can experience happiness if they ______.A. always think of the past and regret itB. value the presentC. are no longer youngD. become old and have much experience52.When people were young, they used to ______.A. be in charge of many businessesB. have few things to think about and take onC. look after their younger sisters and brothersD. face a lot of difficulties53.The pains of children lie in the fact that ______.A. no one helps them make right decisionsB. they are often beaten by their parentsC. they can not be accepted and praised by othersD. they are not allowed to do what they like to do54.Children are usually happy because ______.A. old people lose interest in themB. they are free to do wrongC. they are familiar with everything going on around themD. things are new to them55.Which of the following is NOT needed for a young man to be happy?A. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices markedA), B) C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the correspondingletter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passageA foreigner’s first impression of the U.S. is likely to be that everyone is in a rush-often under pressure. They may miss leisurely business chats in a café or coffeehouse. Normally, Americans do not assess their visitors in such relaxed surroundings over prolonged small talks. We seek out evidence of past performance rather than evaluate a business colleague through social courtesies. Since we generally assess and probe professionally rather than socially, we start talking business very quickly. (348 words)11. W hich of the following statements is wrong? __________A) Americans seem to be always under pressure.B) Americans attach less importance to patience.C) Americans don’t care much about ritual socializing.D) Americans are impolite to their business colleagues.12. Just last year, there were fierce disagreements over the Iraq war-which British Prime Minister T ony Blair supported despite French President Jacques Chirac speaking out against it. This discomfort is expressed in Blair and Chirac’s body language at international meetings. While the French leader often greets German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder with a hug, Blair just receives a handshake. However, some political experts say the war in Iraq could in fact have helped ties. The history of divisions may well be because of the very different ways in which thetwo sides see the world. Some stay very close to thewords on the page; others take off imaginatively from the words, interpreting, criticizing, analyzing and examining. It is concerned not with meaning but with the strategies(策略)we employ in reading. R eading as a kind of conversation between the reader and the text becomesconscious only when __________.A) the reader’s expectations agree with what is said in the textB) the reader has trouble understanding what the author saysC) the reader asks questions and gets answersD) the reader understands a text very well22. According to the passage, it is of great importance for readers at a higher level tomaintain a balance between _________.A) conscious and unconscious levels of comprehensionB) the reader’s expectations and the meaning of a textC) lower and higher levels of comprehensionD) interpreting and criticizing a text25. I love discussing my favorite topics and enjoy burning the midnight oil while reading about other people’s observations and discoveries. Then something happens that brings these observations together in my conscious mind. Suddenly you fancy you see the answer to the riddle, because it all seems to fit together. This has resulted in my publishing 300 papers and books, which some might honor with the title of scientific research.
