⼤学英语三模拟题东华⼤学20__-20__学年第__学期期末试题踏实学习,弘扬正⽓;诚信做⼈,诚实考试;作弊可耻,后果⾃负College English Achievement TestBand 3(易班)Part I Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (10%)Directions: In this part, there is a passage followed by ten statements. You will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and decide whether each of the statements is true or false, or that the information is not given in the passage. Then mark the answer on the Answer Sheet.Renewable EnergyHow does energy use affect the environment? All forms of electricity generation have some level of environmental impact. However, clean energy technologies, including renewable energy and combined heat and power, have fewer impacts than other sources of electricity generation. To learn about the environmental impacts of electricity generation technologies, click on an energy source below. How clean is the electricity I use?In the United States, electricity is generated in many different ways, with a wide variation in environmental impact. Traditional methods of electricity production contribute to air quality problems and the risk of global climate change. With the advent of electric customer choice, many electricity customers can now choose the source of their electricity. In fact, you might now have the option of choosing cleaner, more environmentally friendly sources of energy. How can I make a difference? The energy decisions we make every day can encourage the development of new power sources, save natural resources, and help ensure that the quality of our environment is preserved. In many parts of the country, consumers now have the opportunity to choose the source of the power that is delivered to their home or business—including energy derived from renewable sources. "Renewable energy" generally refers to electricity supplied from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power (energy supplied by the sun), geothermal (energy created from the extreme heat contained in liquid rock—called magma(岩浆)—within the Earth's core), hydropower (energy derived from the movement of water as it flows downstream), and various forms of biomass (fuel from sources such as trees, wood and agricultural wastes and fuel crops). These energy sources are considered renewable because they are continuously replenished on the Earth. In addition, mobile sources of air pollution—such as cars, trucks, trains and lawnmowers—also contribute to air pollution nationwide and are an important source of air pollution in many urban areas.Hydrogen EnergyUsing hydrogen energy could help address many concerns facing our nation and our world. We believe hydrogen can contribute to resolving these issues for these reasons:Firstly, hydrogen can be made from a variety of domestic feedstocks like water, biomass, coal and natural gas.Second, hydrogen is non-toxic(⽆毒的), non-poisonous and will not contribute to groundwater pollution. It does not create "fumes" or other harmful emissions; in fact, using hydrogen in fuel cells produces only electricity and pure water.Furthermore, hydrogen is a key enabler for the development and more widespread implementation of renewable energy technologies, resulting in cleaner and more efficient products in the marketplace.Fifty million tons of hydrogen is produced each year worldwide, with nine million tons being consumed in the U.S. The challenge is to bring hydrogen into the everyday lives of customers as they begin to use hydrogen-powered vehicles and other applications.Geothermal EnergyOur earth's interior—like the sun—provides heat energy from nature. This heat—geothermal energy—yields warmth and power that we can use without polluting the environment. Geothermal heat originates from Earth's fiery consolidation of dust and gas over 4 billion years ago. At earth's core—4,000 miles deep—temperatures may reach over 9,000 degrees F.Solar EnergySunlight, or solar energy, can be used directly for heating and lighting homes and other buildings, for generating electricity, and for hot water heating, solar cooling, and a variety of commercial and industrial uses. After the 1973 oil embargo(禁运), there was a resurgence(复苏,波动再起)of interest in solar energy. Faced with a possibility of scarce oil resources, the United States government allocated $400 million per year, from a mere $1 million per year, for solar energy research. The expenditure is small compared to the expenditure on nuclear research. Currently, there is a need for allocating increased resources in solar research. Compared to the old forms of reducible energy (coal, oil, nuclear), solar energy offers a clean renewable form of energy. This presentation will provide an overview of the past, present and future of solar energy.Wind EnergyWe have been harnessing the wind's energy for hundreds of years. From old Holland to farms in the United States, windmills have been used for pumping water or grinding grain. Today, the windmill's modern equivalent—a wind turbine(涡轮机)—can use the wind's energy to generate electricity.Wind turbines, like windmills, are mounted on a tower to capture the most energy. At 100 feet (30 meters) or more aboveground, they can take advantage of the faster and less turbulent wind. Turbines catch the wind's energy with their propeller-like blades. Usually, two or three blades are mounted on a shaft to form a rotor(旋转部分,旋转器).A blade acts much like an airplane wing. When the wind blows, a pocket of low-pressure air forms on the downwind side of the blade. The low-pressure air pocket then pulls the blade toward it, causing the rotor to turn. This is called lift. The force of the lift is actually much stronger than the wind's force against the front side of the blade, which is called drag. The combination of lift and drag causes the rotor to spin like a propeller, and the turning shaft spins a generator to make electricity.Wind turbines can be used as stand-alone applications, or they can be connected to a utility power grid(蓄电池电极板)or even combined with a photovoltaic(光电的)(solar cell) system. For utility-scale sources of wind energy, a large number of wind turbines are usually built closetogether to form a wind plant. Several electricity providers today use wind plants to supply power to their customers. Ocean Energy BasicsThe ocean can produce two types of energy: thermal energy from the sun's heat, and mechanical energy from the tides and waves.Oceans cover more than 70% of Earth's surface, making them the world's largest solar collectors. The sun's heat warms the surface water a lot more than the deep ocean water, and this temperature difference creates thermal energy. Just a small portion of the heat trapped in the ocean could power the world.Ocean thermal energy is used for many applications, including electricity generation. There are three types of electricity conversion systems: closed-cycle, open-cycle, and hybrid(混合的). Closed-cycle systems use the ocean's warm surface water to vaporize a working fluid, which has a low-boiling point, such as ammonia(氨). The vapor expands and turns a turbine. The turbine then activates a generator to produce electricity. Open-cycle systems actually boil the seawater by operating at low pressures. This produces steam that passes through a turbine/generator. And hybrid systems combine both closed-cycle and open-cycle systems.Ocean mechanical energy is quite different from ocean thermal energy. Even though the sun affects all ocean activities, tides are driven primarily by the gravitational pull of the moon, and waves are driven primarily by the winds. As a result, tides and waves are intermittent(间歇的,断断续续的)sources of energy, while ocean thermal energy is fairly constant. Also, unlike thermal energy, the electricity conversion of both tidal and wave energy usually involves mechanical devices.1.Renewable energy has no environmental impact.a. True.b. False.c. The family was the child's only school. The family was the only means to settle a dispute. Nowadays, the family is still the "world" in some cultures. But in many cultures, these 32 functions of the family have largely been 33 by other institutions, such as schools, churches, and governments. In the 34 ,families changed in other ways, some scientists believe that when people obtained food by hunting animals and gathering roots and plants, the family had to be small 35 move around, and when they settled down to 36 to obtain food, they found that they needed more 37 to do the work. (2 points for each, altogether 30 points)Directions: There are three passages followed by questions. Beneath each question there are four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D. Choose the right answer for each question. Write your answers on the answer sheet.Passage 1Intelligent young people want to go to university, and it is logical for a country to provide university places for them to ensure that there will be good-trained men and women to run the government and industry in the future. So in the 1960s the government set up a number of new universities in Britain to provide everyone with sufficient opportunity to study. But now something has gone wrong. There is still fierce competition to go to university to study arts and other subjects, but many places for scientists are not taken up.The new universities concentrated on science because it seemed practical. They developed new courses so as not to imitate traditional university education. Why have their calculations proved wrong? One reason is that a lot of young people can get enough qualifications to work in industry by going to technical school. They think university courses are too long and tootheoretical. But this does not explain why the majority of students still prefer arts subjects to science subjects.41.What is "logical" according to the first paragraph?_______.[A] Intelligent young people want to go to university.[B] The government should set up universities to train young people for the country.[C] People who run the country should be well-trained.[D] University is the place to train young men and women.42.What makes the new universities different from the traditional ones?_______.[A] There are more science subjects in them.[B] There are more arts students in them.[C] Their curriculum is more scientifically planned.[D] They are equipped with more modern facilities.43.What does "their calculations"(par.2)refer to ?_______.[A] Their plan to defeat the traditional university education.[B] Their calculations of how many students study science and how many students study arts.[C] Their thought that science is practical.[D] Their assumption that people are willing to study the practical science subjects in the university.44.Which of the following shows the advantage of technical schools over universities correctly?_______.[A] They have more qualified teachers.[B] They have more qualified courses.[C] The students can be qualified to work within a short time.[D] If the students get qualification in technical schools, they are more well-received by industry.45.Why does the majority of the students prefer to study arts in university?_______.[A] The reason is not clear.[B] The science courses in university are too theoretical.[C] Arts sound nobler than science.[D] The curriculum of science course is not well-arranged.Passage 2Most Europeans want small cars. Many Americans prefer large cars. As a result, European auto-makers produce a wide variety of economical, lightweight cars while American auto-makers tend to build bigger, heavier cars. The price of gasoline has much to do with this. Gasoline is expensive in Europe, so Europeans naturally prefer cars that will go a long way on a small amount of fuel.Other reasons also enter into the big or little car decision. Many Old World cities have very narrow, winding streets. In these cities a small car is more practical and easier to handle than alarge one. Some Americans like powerful engines in their cars. They enjoy having roomy cars that are comfortable for large families and long trips. They are prepared to pay higher operating costs to get these advantages.Other Americans, however, have learned to like small, nimble cars. Many visitors to Europe during and after WWⅡ discovered that small cars were fun to drive and easy to park in small spaces. They were delighted to learn how far small cars could go on a few gallons of gasoline. In the 1950s,many Americans began buying European cars. In 1953, for the first time, the United States imported more cars than it exported. The best seller among these imported cars was an odd-looking but dependable small car from Germany. Americans promptly nicknamed it "the bug".Today, American car buyers have a wide choice. There are big cars for people who want elbow room, comfort and power. And there are small cars, mostly imported but some American-made, for people who want easy parking and economical operation.46.Implied but not stated:_______.[A] All Americans buy European cars.[B] No one wants to drive a powerful car.[C] Small cars are not expensive to run.[D] Americans don't like roomy cars.47.What does the word "nimble" mean?_______.[A] cheap[B] beautiful[C] swift[D] foreign48.On the whole, the article tells about_______.[A] parking cars in America[B] the price of gasoline[C] the price of roomy cars[D] big cars and small cars49.Why do some people want to purchase big cars? _______.[A] They want to have elbow room, comfort and power.[B] It is easier to park big cars.[C] They need to make long-distance journey.[D] Big cars cost less than small cars.50.Which statement seems true according to the article?_______.[A] Americans are not accustomed to traveling in Europe.[B] People like to choose cars from many choices.[C] People like to buy European cars without any specific reason.[D] No one drives big cars in Old World cities.Passage 3The bath was invented before the bath plug. The bath plug couldnot have been invented before the bath, except as a small object with which to play ice hockey. The order in which inventions are made is very important, much more important than has ever been realized, because we tend automatically to think that later inventions are better than earlier ones. A moment's thought will show this is not so. If, for example, a solution to today's urban traffic problems was proposed in the shape of a small man-powered two-wheeled vehicle which would make the motor car look like a cumbersome (笨重的)over-powered device, a space rocket trying to tackle suburban problems, we would greet it as a great technological breakthrough. “bIcycle makes car obsolete!”We would cry. Unfortunately, the bike came first, so we shall always unconsciously see it as a cruder version of the car. Other things which may have been invented too early are the airship, the radio, the railway train, the cuff-link.Consider also the zipper. Zippers represent a technological advance on buttons, being faster and more complete. They are also more liable to come adrift, break, jam, stick and catch. Buttons can only go wrong if the thread is faulty. Even then, buttons can be mended by the user, Zips rarely can.51.If the bicycle were to be invented now, the car would appear_______.[A] unsuitable for its purpose[B] in advance of its time[C] unnecessarily expensive[D] too far for safety52.The railway train and the radio are examples of things which_______.[A] were not fully appreciated at the time of their invention[B] are more suitable for use now than when they were invented[C] are neglected in favor of more recent invention[D] are less suited to their purpose than earlier invention53.According to the author, buttons are preferable to zippers because they_______.[A] are more convenient[B] are more reliable[C] cost less to replace[D] are more complete54.What conclusion can be drawn from the article? _______.[A] Modern technology can't solve our problems.[B] Everything has two aspects, advantages and disadvantages.[C] We should change our usual way of thinking about inventions.[D] Technological innovations do not always mean more benefits55.What does the word "obsolete" mean?_______.[A] outdated[B] slow in movement[C] ridiculous[D] awkwardIV. Reading Comprehension. (2 points for each, altogether 20 points)Directions: There are 2 passages followed by questions. Beneath each question there arejz*four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D. Choose the right answer for each question. Write your answers on the answer sheet.Passage One Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. In cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum rent that a landlord can charge for an apartment. Supporters of rent control argue that it protects people who are living in apartments. Their rent cannot increase; therefore, they are not in danger of losing their homes. However, the critics say that after a long time, rent control may have negative effects. Landlords know that they cannot increase their profits. Therefore, they invest in other businesses where they can increase their profits. They do not invest in new buildings which would also be rent-controlled. As a result, new apartments are not built. Many people who need apartments cannot find any. According to the critics, the end result of rent control is a shortage of apartments in the city. Some theorists argue that the minimum wage law can cause problems in the same way. The federal government sets the minimum that an employer must pay workers. The minimum helps people who generally look for unskilled, low-paying jobs. However, if the minimum is high, employers may hire fewer workers. They will replace workers with machinery. The price, which is the wage that employers must pay, increases. Therefore, other things being equal, the number of workers that employers want decreases. Thus, critics claim, an increase in the minimum wage may cause unemployment. Some poor people may find themselves without jobs instead of with jobs at the minimum wage.Supporters of the minimum wage say that it helps people keep their dignity. Because of the law, workers cannot sell their services for less than the minimum. Furthermore, employers cannot force workers to accept jobs at unfair wages.Economic theory predicts the results of economic decisions such as decisions about farm production, rent control, and the minimum wage. The predictions may be correct only if “other things are equal〞. Economists do not agree on some of the predictions. They also do not agree on the value of different decisions. Some economists support a particular decision while others criticize it. Economists do agree, however, that there are no simple answers to economic questions.31. There is the possibility that setting maximum rent may.[A]cause a shortage of apartments[B]worry those who rent apartments as homes[C]increase the profits of landlords[D]encourage landlords to invest in building apartment32.According to the critics, rent control[A]will always benefit those who rent apartments[B]is unnecessary[C]will bring negative effects in the long run[D]is necessary under all circumstances33.The problem of unemployment will arise[A]if the minimum wage is set too high[B]if the minimum wage is set too low[C]if the workers are unskilledjz*[D]if the maximum wage is set34.The passagetells us[A]the relationship between supply and demand[B]the possible results of government controls[C]the necessity of government control[D]the urgency of getting rid of government controls35.Which of the following statements is NOT true"[A]The results of economic decisions can not always be predicted.[B]Minimum wage can not always protect employees.[C]Economic theory can predict the results of economic decisions if other factors are not changing.[D]Economic decisions should not be based on economic theory.Passage TwoQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Social customs and ways of behaving change. Things which were considered impolite many years ago are now acceptable. Just a few years ago, it was considered impolite behavior for a man to smoke on street. No man who thought of himself by smoking when a lady was in a room.Customs also differ from country to country. Does a man walk on the left or the right of a woman in your country" Or doesn't it matter" Should you use both hands when you are eating" Should leave one in your lap, or on the table"The Americans and the British not only speak the same language but also share a large number of social customs. For example, in both America and England people shake hands when they meet each other for the first time. Also, most Englishmen will open a door for a woman or offer their seat to a woman, and so will most Americans. Promptness is important both in England and in America. That is , if a dinner invitation is for 7 o'clock , the dinner guest either arrives close to that time or calls up to explain his delay. The important thing to remember about social customs is not to do anything that might make other people feel uncomfortable-----especially if they are your guests. When the food was served , one of the guests started to eat his peas with a knife . The other guests were amused or shocked, but the host calmly picked up his knife and began eating in the same way. It would have been bad manners to make his guest feel foolish or uncomfortable.36. If one has accepted a dinner invitation, what should he do if he is late for the dinner"[A]. Thereafter , most manufacturers of personal computers licensed MS-DOS as their operating system , generating vast revenues for Microsoft; by the early 1990s it had sold more than 100 million copies of the program and defeated rival operating systems such as CP/M ,which it displaced in the early 1980s, and later OS/2. 新视野大学英语三级模拟试题及答案Part I Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning)Directions: In this section, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly. For questions 1–7, markY (for YES) if the statement agrees with the information given in the passage; N (for NO) if the statement contradicts the information given in the passage; NG (for NOT GIVEN) if the information is not given in the passage. For questions 8–10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.Youth of Today—No savings, no pension, huge debts —Leaving school or university means financial independence — but does it also mean debt? Some experts say the young should take some care.It is life, but not as we know it. As this year’s school leavers and graduate s in Britain move on to further education or work, tasting financial independence for the first time, they show signs of being entirely different to previous generations in their attitudes to money, according to information collected by Cash. Used to debt but more affluent than previous generations, the current crop of 16- to 24-year-olds is a complex sector of society. But if they can handle their debts, these 7.5 million young adults have the potential to become quite sophisticated on money matters.Cash looked for the financial hallmarks of this group. They are going to be big spenders and will be targeted heavily by retailers. ―The market for products and services aimed at this group has continued to thrive,‖ concludes research organization Mintel in its recent report for retailers ―Selling to and Profi ting from the Under 25s”. This is “partly because the period during which people are young, free and single, unencumbered (不受妨碍的)by parents and /or children has expanded to the late twenties and early thirties,”it says. While 13 percent of the population regularly pays their utility(公共设施), credit card and other bills late, this proportion rises to a remarkable 64 percent for 18- to 24-year-olds, according to research conducted among 1,000 adults by . In theory, this suggests that more than 4 million of them are heading for such poor credit ratings that they will find it difficult to borrow in the future. But lenders may become more flexible in their lending terms rather than lose out on this huge sector of the consumer market.Nearly one in three (28 percent) of people under 35 ―do not consider their future financial position‖, according to research from Accenture H R Services.Although half of 18- to 25-year-olds want to own their home some day, they see almost insurmountable hurdles, according to Mintel: ―For those who had not yet bought their own property, the prospect of trying to do so seemed daunting — if not impossible —financially.‖ Or could it be that their future prosperity will depend on whether they inherit property from their parents? They regard as necessities many items which were seen as luxuries by their parents at the same age. More than nine out of 10 have their own mobile phone. ―Some looked on their phone as a kind of security blanket, feeling lost without it,‖ says Mintel. A car is seen as ―vital‖ by 64 percentof 18- to 25-year-olds, and designer clothes are worn by 44 percent of men and 35 percent of women in this age group, adds Mintel. Computer equipment is a high priority for many twenty-year-olds. Audio-visual equipment is particularly valued by young men.Credit card ownership is increasing. Nearly two thirds of young adults have a card. More than half (58 percent) of the under-25s do not pay off their credit card bill in full each month, according to Mintel —including 16 percent who owe more than £500. With credit card ownership predicted to increase nearly 20 percent by 2009, the younger age group could be increasingly targeted, as they are more accustomed to borrowing than older groups.Debt is commonplace in this age group. Barclays predicts that graduate debt will average £17,500 in 2006, rising to nearly £34,000 by 2010.A third of this group believe they are ―too young‖ to start thinking about a pension, according to Accenture. ―There is a sea change in behavior going on here,‖ says Mervyn Kohler of Help the Aged. ―For recent graduates who are saddled with debt and struggling to buy a home, the last thing they would care about is pension planning. They have also heard the message that they will have to work until they drop, so they wonder why they should bother with a pension. But when they retire, they will expect the state to bail them out.‖There is evidence to back up their instincts. More than 73 percent of the current crop of forty–year–olds are on course to be on Pension Credit and other means — tested benefits when they retire, according to the Institute of Fiscal Studies. Unless changes are made to the system, this proportion will increase.Despite these disturbing findings, there is light at the end of the tunnel for the young. Helen Bowman, welfare officer at De Montfort University’s Student Finance Advice Centre, believes that many 18-year-olds get into financial difficulty out of ignorance but that ―they tend to be very, very good‖ at dealing with problems when they face up to reality.Part of the problem is that many have received little financial education from their parents. Some young adults do not even know how to shop for food and many do not realize that convenience food from corner shops will be more expensive than fruit and vegetables and other basic ingredients bought in markets or by looking for bargains, value ranges and discounts in supermarkets. The generosity of parents can also backfire. ―There does come a point where parents have to stop helping,‖ says Bowman.Credit card companies have made debt far too accessible, she believes. It could be that lending is more strictly regulated by the authorities in future. The Liberal Democrats are increasingly concerned at the easy availability of credit and this issue could well move up the political agenda. The location of cash machines in pubs does not help, especially for a generation that drinks heavily. Budgeting is hard for students who have to pay mobile phone and many other bills monthly but whose income in the form of Student Loans comes in at the start of term. But there are many cases of students getting into debt and then finding a way out of the mess, usually by getting a job. Along the way, they learn how to budget and how to avoid temptation by, for instance, leaving their plastic at home.Parents may not even be aware, in many of these cases, that their children have got into debt and then scraped their way out. And people like these, who learnt the hard way, have an understanding of money which is probably deeper than that of people who have never had difficulties.1. According to the Cash study, the young adults in Britain today form a complex sector of society because they lead a more affluent life by overdrawing their credit card.2. There are 13 percent of young adults who regularly pay their bills late.3. Over ninety percent of 18- to 25-year-olds have got their own mobile phones.4. It is predicted that there will be more credit card users among young people than among older people.5. The average graduate debt will be greatly increased in the coming five years.6. Most young people didn’t receive enough financial education from their parents.7. The passage suggests that parents should always help their children in paying their debt.8. Compared with precious generations, the current graduates have very different attitudes to ____________________.9. At the time when their parents were young, a lot of modern necessary equipment owned by young people now was regarded as ____________________.10. The last thing most young people think they are still too young to bother about is ____________________.Part II Listening ComprehensionSection A ConversationsDirections: In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 long conversations. Whether the ____47____of life in the family house in sweet or not so sweet, the cherished (珍爱的) ideal of home has great importance for many people. This ideal is a ____48____ part of the American dream. This dream, dramatized in the history of nineteenth-century Europe settlers of the American West, was to find a piece of land, build a house for one’s family, and start a farm. These small ____49____ were portraits of independence: the entire family — mother, father, children, even grandparents — living in a small house and working together to support each other. Everyone understood the ____50____ importance of family cooperation and hard work. Although most people in the United States nolonger live on farms, the ideal of home ____51____ is just strong in the twentieth century as it was in the nineteenth. When U.S. soldiers came home after World War II, for example, they dreamed of buying houses and ____52____ families. So there was a tremendous boom in home building. The new houses, typically in the suburbs, were often small and nearly ____53____, but they satisfied a deep need. But the picture is changing: people can now telecommute, or work at home, while being ____54____ to the office by means of their computer. More and more people can now stay at home. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C), and D). You should decide on the best choice.Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.Perhaps the most important defining characteristic of a human being is culture. The term culture as used here is not limited to operas, paintings, and other artistic endeavors. These are seen by anthropologists (人类学家) as examples of culture: culture itself is the customary manner in which human groups learn to organize their behavior and thought in relation to their environment. Defined in this manner, culture has three principal aspects: behavioral, perceptual and material. The behavioral component refers to how people act, especially how they interact with each other. In child rearing (养育) , for example, parents and children tend to interact in a relatively patterned fashion. Then there is the manner of perception, the ways people perceive the world. For example, parents have a limited range of ideas about how they should act, and what significance parenthood carries in the scheme of things. Finally, there is the material component of culture — the physical objects that we produce. Most of what goes into making up culture is a result of learning — modifying behavior in response to experience within an environment. Learning is practically universal among organisms. But no other organism has a greater capacity for learning than a human, or depends as much on learned behavior for its survival. While the survival of most other organisms is to some extent safeguarded by instincts, humans rely heavily on culture for their survival. People must learn how to live in a particular social and physical setting, biology playing but a minimal (最小限度的) role. The ideas and modes of behavior that constitute culture are transmitted largely by a complex system of symbols that includes language. Humans have evolved an extremely complex system of communication that is unique to our species. Without it the creation of human culture as we know it would be impossible.57. What is the definition of culture by anthropologists?A) Operas, paintings and may other artistic activities as a whole.B) Customary manners of behavior and thought related to the environment.C) Behavioral, perceptual and material components interacting with each other.D) The different ways people perceive the physical world.58. I was alone, quite ill and had to delay my flight home. Luckily, when booking my ticket months before, I had bought travel insurance. So my illness didn’t cost me a cent. It’s actually pretty simple. A lot of unforeseen things can happen to you when you’re traveling. Make sure you’re prepared for all of them.A good health insurance policy will get you proper medical attention anywhere in the world outside your home province —at the insurance company’s expense. The company will sen d you home if it is considered medically necessary and, if you’re sick enough, it will send a nurse to accompany you. If you end up in a hospital and a doctor recommends that a family member come to your bedside, the insurance company will pay for it. You may even get pocket money to make your hospital stay more comfortable. When I was sick in Bombay, I called the insurance company collect. It paid for a doctor(who came to my hotel room), all my medication, an extra night in the hotel and all my meals.Picture it: the day before your big trip to Vancouver, you wake up with appendicitis (阑尾炎). You have no choice —you have to cancel your trip. Your ticket, like most, is non-refundable and you can’t make any changes. You’re about to lose all the money you put out for the ticket —unless you bought cancellation insurance beforehand. Most travel plans include some form of non-refundable element: your deposit, your flights, your cruise, your stay at the all-inclusive resort. That non-refund able portion is what you’ll lose if you have to cancel your trip in the event that you get sick and you don’t have cancellation insurance.67. What happened to the author when he was in Bombay?A) He fell ill and couldn’t go home as scheduled.B) He didn’t buy travel insurance.C) He spent a lot of money on curing his illness.D) He couldn’t get in touch with his family and friends.68. With a health insurance policy, if you get sick traveling away from home, _________.A) you may get pocket money from the local hospital you are inB) your family members may go to see you at the insurance company’s expenseC) you may choose to stay in the best local hospitalD) you may get a nurse from the insurance company to take care of you69. Which item was paid by the insurance company when the author was ill in Bombay?A) His trip to Bombay.B) All his hotel rates.C) All his meals at his hotel.D) His travel insurance policy.70. With cancellation insurance, you can _________.A) have a choice where to go and where to stayB) get your money back when canceling your travel ticketC) enjoy a reduced rate of travel expenseD) buy a refundable ticket at the ticket office71. From the passage we may say that _________.A) a health insurance policy is more useful than a cancellation insurance policyB) a cancellation insurance policy can make your trip safe and comfortableC) when you get si ck while traveling away from home, you’d better buy a health insuranceD) travel insurance is strongly recommended when you travel away from homePart IV ClozeDirections: There are 20 blanks in the following passage. These restrict where, when and by whom alcohol may be sold. In order to open a pub or wine bar the owner must obtain the approval of the local magistrates who must be satisfied that he or she is a suitable person to sell alcohol. If the application is approved the owner obtains a license to sell alcohol and becomes the licensee. The name of the licensee is displayed above the front door. If magistrates are not happy with the way a pub is being run they can cancel the license.Pubs are only allowed to sell alcohol during official opening hours. They are allowed to remain open all day from 11a.m. to 11p.m. though many close in the afternoon. If they wish to stay open after 11p.m., they must obtain a special late license. Pubs open for a shorter time on Sundays, and in some parts of Wales they are closed altogether. In the US, there are local laws about when and where alcohol can be sold. Some towns are dry, i.e., no alcohol can be sold there at all. In general, restaurants and bars need a license to sell beer and wine. In some states alcohol for drinking at home is sold only in special liquor stores; in other places it is sold in any food shop. There are fewer restrictions on when alcohol can be sold than there are in Britain, and bars can stay open very late. The most common restriction is that alcohol may not be sold early on Sunday mornings.33. Primary schools are usually run by local educational authorities and over free tuition, although there are some private schools owned by enterprises and individuals.Secondary schooling is for children from 12 to17 years of age. Education of this kind is run by local governments and various business authorities. State-run secondary schools include junior middle schools and senior middle schools, both with three grades or years. The first three years of secondary school are compulsory and tuition is free. Senior middle school is not compulsory and students must pay minimal tuition fees. Private secondary schools often offer specializededucation and have a more vocational bent, but the qualifications they offer are considered to be on the same level as those of state-run middle schools. For higher education there are vocational courses as well as undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees. Bachelor’s degrees usually require 4 to 5 years of study, master’s degrees need 2 to3 years and Ph.D.s are granted after 3 years. Higher education is offered in universities, colleges, institutes, and vocational colleges. These institutes conduct academic and scientific research and provide social services as well as offering courses to students. To enter a university or college, students have to take the national entrance examination, which takes place every June and is now open to people of all ages. The company will send you home if it is considered medically necessary and, if you’re sick enough, it will send a nurse to accompany you. If you end up in a hospital and a doctor recommends that a family member come to your bedside, the insurance company will pay for it. You may even get pocket money to make your hospital stay more comfortable. When I was sick in Bombay, I called the insurance company collect. It paid for a doctor (who came to my hotel room), all my medication, an extra night in the hotel and all my meals.Picture it: the day before your big trip to Vancouver, you wake up with appendicitis (阑尾炎). For example, in India, the country where more than half of those polled said women should stay home, an almost equal number of men and women held this view.48. What is the survey conducted by Reuters/Ipsos about?A) Women’s role in the familyB) The relationship between husband and wifeC) Whether women should work or stay at home.D) Women’s rights49.In the survey conducted by Reuters/Ipsos, which country is listed as the first one that holds the largest number people believing women should not work?A) China B) Japan C) India D) Turkey50. Conclusions can be drawn from John Wright EXCEPT________.A)I n the past, women made great achievements in many fields of society.B)T here still exist many barriers in women’s life.C)A majority of people don’t share the same view as what is expressed in the poll.D)W omen should have the ability to make their own choices.52. You can learn from the survey that ___________.A) In India, an almost equal number of men and women shared the same view.B) Older people are inclined to believe women should stay at home.C) Women’s role is insignificant in the workforce.D) There are more Chinese than Japanese that hold the view that women should stay at home.Part ⅡTranslation from English into Chinese (10%) (15 minutes)Directions:In this part, there are five items, and four of them are taken from the reading passages you have just read. (2 points for each, altogether 30 points) Directions: There are three passages followed by questions. Beneath each question there are four choices respectively marked by letters A, B, C and D.Choose the right answer for each question. They think university courses are too long and too theoretical. In these cities a small car is more practical and easier to handle than a large one. The bath plug could not have been invented before the bath, except as a small object with which to play ice hockey. The seemingly contradictory evidence is reconciled by the difference what I call p ublic private speaking . More men feel comfortable doing “ public speaking ” , while more women feel comfortable doing “ private ” speaking . Another way of capturing these differences is by using the terms report-talk and rapport-talk .For most women , the language of conversation is primarily a language of rapport : a way of establishing connections and negotiating relationships . Emphasis is placed on displaying similarities and matching experiences . From childhood , girls criticize peers who try to stand out or appear better than others . People feel their closest connections at home , or in settings where they feel at home – with one or a few people they feel close to and comfortable with – in other words , during private speaking . But even the most public situations can be approached like private speaking .For most men , talk is primarily a means to preserve independence and negotiate and maintain status in a hierarchical social order . This is done by exhibiting knowledge and skill , and by holding center stage through verbal performance such as storytelling ,joking , or imparting information . From childhood , men learn to use talking as a way to get and keep attention . So they are more comfortable speaking in larger groups made up of people they know less well , in the broadest sense , “ public speaking ” . But even the most private situations can be approached like public speaking , more like giving a report than establishing rapport .61. Another term for “ private talking ” is ______ .A. report talkB. rapport talkC. persuasive talkD. women’s talk62. When women talk , they tend to ______ .A. criticize their friends who stand outB. make others feel at homeC. approach public situations like private talkingD. seek close relationship with other speakers63. Men talk in order to ______ .A. make new friendsB. share experienceC. negotiate with othersD. get attention64. The purpose of this passage is to _______ .A. compare and contrast the male and female talking stylesB. analyze the male and female talkC. inform of the gender differenceD. draw people’s attention to the difference65. The conclusion we can draw from this passage is that ________ .A. men talk more than womenB. men and women have different conversational stylesC. men like to display their knowledge and skills in their talkD. men are more independent than womenQuestion 66 to 70 are based on the following passage :It’s generally agreed that the greatest threat facing the world today is the warming of the earth’s atmosphere , commonly called global warming or the greenhouse effect . It is the world’s biggest problem because it is truly a world-wide problem . It involves everything in the world , from the North to the South poles , from the bottom of the ocean to the edge of the atmosphere . We therefore obviously need to find a solution to it . But first of all , we need to be clear about what it is that causes the greenhouse effect .Basically , we have been producing too many of the gases which , when they are released into the earth’s atmosphere , trap heat , and thus raise its temperature . There are several gases involved , but the main ones are carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons—often called CFCs . The carbon dioxide comes from burning forests and from burning fossil fuels such as oil and coal . The CFCs are given off by refrigerators and air-conditioning systems . Carbon dioxide is to blame for 56% of the greenhouse effect , and CFCs for 23% .We now dump 24 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. If this figure were to double , the average global temperature could go up between 1 to 4 degrees C . This may not sound like much , but a two degree rise would make the world hotter than it has ever been in human history . Unfortunately , to make matters worse , the warming effect may not make itself apparent until it is too late . The temperature of the world has risen by more than half a degree this century , and the oceans have risen by at least 10 cms . But just as it takes time for a kettle of water to boil , so it may have taken 30 years or so for the ocean to swell . This means that the global warming we are experiencing now is only a result of the carbon dioxide and other gases we have dumped into the atmosphere up to the 1960s . Since then , our use of fossil fuels has increased rapidly . In other words , the damage may have already been done . Temperatures are expected to increase by at least 1.3 Celsius degrees by 2030 and 3 degrees by the year 2070 .66. The best title for this text is ________ .A. Cause and Effect of Global WarmingB. Damages Done by Global WarmingC. Global Warming and Industrial DevelopmentD. Solution to the Problem of Pollution67. A contributing factor to the greenhouse effect is _________ .A. the earth’s atmosphereB. the world climateC. the forest fireD. the two poles68. The greenhouse effect we are experiencing now is resulted from _____ .A. the present environmental pollutionB. the poisonous gases produced 30 years agoC. the development of industryD. the wastes dumped by people69. The world temperature rise for this century is ______ .A. 1 to 4 degrees CB. 3 degrees CC. over half a degree CD. 1.3 degrees C70. We may infer from this passage that ______ .A. carbon dioxide and CFCs are equally harmful to the environmentB. global warming is a direct cause for natural disastersC. the world temperature rise has been going up more quickly as time passesD. people’s living standard has been on the riseQuestion 70 to 75 are based on the following passage :Time spent in a bookshop can be most enjoyable , whether you are a book-lover or merely there to buy a book as a present . You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower . Whatever the reason , you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings . The desire to pick up a book with an attractive dust-jacket is irresistible , although this method of selection ought not to be followed , as you might end up with a rather dull book . You soon become engrossed in some book or other , and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent far too much time there and must dash off to keep some forgotten appointment –without buying a book , of course .This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is , I think , the main attraction of a bookshop . There are not many places where it is possible to do this .A music shop is very much like a bookshop . You can wander round such places to your heart’s content . If it is a good shop , no assistant will approach you with the inevitable greeting : “ Can I help you , sir?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want . In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished browsing . Then , and only then , are his services necessary . Of course , you may want to find out where a particular section is , but when he has led you there , the assistant should retire discreetly and look as if he is not interested in selling a single book .You have to be careful not to be attracted by the variety of books in a bookshop . It is very easy to enter the shop looking for a book on , say ancient coins and to come out carrying a copy of the latest best-selling novel and perhaps a book about brass-rubbing-----something which had only vaguely interested you up till then . This volume on the subject , however , happened to be so well illustrated and the part of the text you read proved so interesting that you just had to buy it . This sort of thing can be very dangerous . Apart from running a huge account , you can waste a great deal of time wandering from section to section . Book-sellers must be both long-suffering and indulgent .71. You may spend too much time in a bookshop because _________ .A. the dust-jackets are very attractiveB. you start reading one of the booksC. it is raining outsideD. you have to make sure you can’t buy a dull book as a present72. In a good bookshop ________ .A. nobody takes any notice of youB. the assistant greets you in a friendly wayC. your heart is contentedD. you feel that you are in a music shop73. An assistant should help you _______ .A. as soon as you have entered a shopB. just before you finish browsingC. only when you have finished browsingD. when he leads you to a particular section74. It’s very easy to en ter a bookshop and buy_______ .A. a book on ancient coinsB. a best-selling novel on brass-rubbingC. a book that only vaguely interests youD. a book that unexpectedly interests you75. This passage is mainly about ______ .A. some advice on entering a bookshopB. how to select books in a bookshopC. assistants’ service in a bookshopD. attractions of books in a bookshopPart V Translation from English into Chinese :A punctual ( 守时的) person is in the habit of doing a thing at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment .The unpunctual man , on one hand , never does what he has to do at the proper time . ( 76 ) He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both time and his good name .A lost thing may be found again , but lost time can never be regained . Time is more valuable than material things . In fact , time is life itself . ( 77 ) The unpunctual man is for ever wasting and mismanaging his most valuable asset ( 财产) as well as other’s . The unpunctual person is always complaining that he finds no time to answer letters , or return calls or keep appointments promptly . But the man who really has a great deal to do is very careful of his time and seldom complains of want of it . He knows that he can not get through his huge amount of work unless he faithfully keeps every piece of work when it has to be attended to .Faithfully to be punctual in keeping one’s appointments is sign of disrespect towards others . ( 78 ) If a person is invited to dinner and arrives later than the appointed time , he keeps all the other guests waiting for him . Usually this will be regarded as a great disrespect to the host and all other guests present .( 79 ) Unpunctuality , moreover , is very harmful when it come to do one’s duty , whether public or private . Imagine how it would be if those who are put in charge of important tasks failed to be at their proper place at the appointed time . ( 80 ) A man who is known to be usually unpunctual is never trusted by his friends or fellow men .Part VI Translation from Chinese into English:81. 你对什么样的生活方式会感到满意?82.没有人能回答出雨季还将持续多久。

By this definition of art, people who watch a television movie are seeing a form of art. Teenagers who buy and play records of popular music are listening to a form of art. And the millions who read paperback romance or adventure novels are enjoying art in still another form. Art is sometimes divided into two kinds, high art and popular art. High art appeals to a much smaller part of the population than popular art, but the number is large and growing. People who enjoy high art go to the opera and symphony concerts; they read serious books, they go to serious plays; they keep up with the art exhibitions at museums and galleries. Popularart consists primarily of programs which are meant to be watched today and forgotten tomorrow. Many popular songs are hits for a few weeks, then they disappear.11.Art includes creative writing, painting, theatre, music, dance and many crafts, such as pottery. Most physicians have a contract relationship with one or more hospitals in the community. They send their patients to these hospitals, which usually charge patients that they care for. Some hospitals belong to a city, a state or, in the case of veterans’hospitals, a federal government agency. Others are operated by religious orders(教堂) or other non-profit groups. Some medical doctors are on salary. Salaried physicians may work as hospital staff members, or residents, who are often still in training. They may teach in medical schools, be hired by corporations to care for their workers or work for the federal government’s Public Health Service. Physicians are among the best paid professionals in the United States. In the 1980s, it was not uncommon for medical doctors to earn incomes of more than $100,000 a year. Specialists, particularly surgeons, might earn several times that amount. Physicians list many reasons why they deserve to be so well rewarded for their work. One reason is the long and expensive preparation required to become a physician in the United States. Most would be physicians first attend college for four years, which can cost nearly $20,000 a year at one of the best private institutions. Prospective(未来) physicians then attend medical school for four years. Tuition alone can exceed $10,000 a year. By the time they have obtained their medical degrees, many young physicians are deeply in debt. They still face three to five years of residency(实习期) in a hospital, the first year as an apprentice physician. The hours are long and their pay is relatively low. Setting up a medical practice is expensive, too. Sometimes several physicians will decide to establish a group practice, so they can share the expense of maintaining an office and buying equipment. These physicians also of each other’s patients in emergencies. Physicians work long hours and must accept a great deal of responsibility. Many medical procedures, even quite routine ones, involve risk. It is understandable that physicians want to be well rewarded for making decisions which can mean the difference between life and death.36.According to the passage, it is very unlikely that an American hospital is owned by ______.A.a churchB.a corporationC.a cityD.a state正确答案:B37.The expenses for becoming a doctor are spent on ______.A.schooling and trainingB.practice in a hospitalC.facilities he or she uses.D.education he or she provides正确答案:A38.According to the passage, how long does it take for a would-be physician to become an independent physician in the USA?A.About seven years.B.Eight years.C.Ten years.D.About twelve years.正确答案:D39.Sometimes several physicians set up a group medical practice mainly because ______.A.they may have more patientsB.they can take turns to work long hoursC.facilities may be a big burden to an individualD.no one wants to assume too much responsibility正确答案:C40.Which of the following statements could fully express the author’s view towards physicians’ payment in the USA’?A.Physicians’ expensive education and the characteristics of their work make them well deserve the handsome pay.B.It is reasonable for physicians to have a large income because their work is very dangerous.C.Physicians should be better paid because they work long hours under bad conditions.D.Physicians shoulder great responsibilities, so it is understandable that they should be well rewarded.正确答案:ATask 2Directions: This task is the same as Task 1.
