During their long history of development Chinese

characters have evolved into many different artistic styles, including inscriptions on bones or tortoise shells, the seal character, official script, regular script, running script and cursive script. Many Chinese characters are pictographs and often the meaning of a particular character is apparent in the pictorial form of the character. Calligraphy, whether done with a knife or brush, can be rendered in exaggerate ways for artistic effects. Therefore, it has been traditionally a subject of artistic study.

Traditional Chinese calligraphy constitutes a tourist resource. Most of the Chinese tourist areas have numerous inscribed tablets, inscribed horizontal boards, and inscribed couplets written on the scrolls hung on the pillars of halls. Historically, many poets and senior monks wrote inscriptions on precipices to express their feelings when they visited famous mountains. In addition, calligraphy has also been practiced as more popular forms of art with silk and paper. Whatever the form, calligraphy of Chinese characters will continue to exert a magnetic influence on both domestic and foreign visitors.
