The Scarlet LetterFor long Nathaniel Hawthorne has been considered to be the first great American writer of fiction. His The Scarlet Letter is one of the greatest novels in American literature of the 19th century. This is a story of crime, sin, guilt, punishment and expiation, set in Puritan Bostin during the mid-17th century. Although the story is mainly about Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale and Roger Chillingworth, during my reading, I am attracted by Hester and Dimmesdale's special child –Pearl. Her particularities are as follows.Pearl inherited her mother's beauty and characteristics. She possessed a ″rich and luxuriant beauty; a beauty that shone with deep and vivid tints; a bright complexion, eyes possessing intensity both of depth and glow and hair already of a deep, glossy brown and which, in after many years, would be nearly akin to black″. No matter what clothes she was in, she was graceful, even if she torn and soiled the clothes during her game. In terms of characteristics, she was determined and rebellious. When she was look down upon and mocked by other children, she angrily and bravely rushed and drove away them; when she was asked in the Governor's hall who made her, she deliberately refused to give the proper answer that her mother had taught her but said that she had not been made at all; when her mother ask her to come to the minister in the forest, she was reluctant to do so and even washing off Dimmesdale's unwelcomed kiss with disfavor.Pearl was so close to nature that she seemed to be a part of it. As an illegitimate child, she had no father beside her. Luckily, she was not only the child of human being, she was also the child of nature – it warmly accepted her as a part of it. Having been kept away by other children, her only playmate was nature, even a stick or a bunch of rags or a flower could become the main character of the drama in her inner world. She dared to seize a shark, melt a jelly fish in the sun and hit pebble to a bird. In the forest, the wild animal took her for their same species, for example, ″A fox started from his sleep by her light footstep on the leaves, looked inquisitively at Pearl, as doubting whether it were better to steal off, or renew his nap on the same spot. Awolf, it is said – but here the tale has surely lapsed into the improbable – came up and smelt of Pearl's robe, and offered his savage head to be patted by her hand″. Every time she turned up, she was like an energetic elf, coming and going without leaving a trace.Pearl had a kind of mysterious intuition. When she was still a baby, her mother had worn the scarlet letter so she had some natural connection of it. She even used seaweed to make her own green A on her bosom and could relate the minister's habit of putting his hand over his heart to the scarlet letter. No one told her the reason for the minister's strange habit; she just knew it and believed that it was for the same reason that Hester wore the letter. Pearl cried and could not recognize her mother when she found Hester not wearing the scarlet letter. For the minster, her unusual friendliness even surprised her mother –″Pearl, that wild and flighty little elf, stole softly towards him, and taking his hand in the grasp of both her own, laid her cheek against it; a caress so tender, and withal so unobtrusive…″ In the forest, she could feel that the relationship between the minister and her mother was unusually intimate and she was depressed to find that her place beside Hester was now occupied by Dimmesdale. The minister also admitted to Hester that he dread to meet Pearl and she refused to speak directly to him and kept asking Hester questions such as, ″ Does he love us? Will he go back with us, hand in hand, we three together, into the town ″? Public revelation of the real relationship among the three was to Pearl the only means of reconciliation. When public revelation was turned down by the minister, she pointed out that he was not bold and he was not true. However, after Dimmesdale made a public confession as what she wanted, she could feel the pain and answered her dying father's calling, kissing his lips willingly. In many reader's eyes, as a walking scarlet letter, Pearl to Hester and Dimmesdale was the reminder of their sin, which was the most important symbolic meaning and function of this character. However, she was definitely not only a symbol. She was a vivid character, having her own gamut of human feeling, which definitely deserves our attention.。

The Book Report of The Scarlet Letter---- The analysis of the main characters in The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter as a masterpiece of Hawthorne, is a world-known tragic novel. The author adopts delicate description and profound psychological analysis portrays different characters vividly and deeply. It breaks the mold that American’s long-gestating novel is always fo llowing behind Western Europe’s.The social life in the early colonial period is very familiar to Hawthorne. Hence he is good at the portrayal of different kind of characters who were living under the rule of Puritans. And the novel is succeeded in shaping three types of people: Hester Prynne is a representative of ordinary women who were suffering persecution by the church. Being put in prison, publicly expose, put on scarlet letter, endless torments and humiliation stroke her religious belief and removed her hope for the church. At the beginning, what she wants to do is only to confess her sins. While she has no right to do that, which arouses her awareness of rebellion and resistance. We can see from the original work: ” But Hester Prynne, with a mind of native courage and activity, and for so long a period not merely separated, but outlawed, from society, had habituated herself to such latitude of speculation as was altogether foreign to the clergyman. The scarlet letter was her passport into regions where other women dared not tread. ” Therefore, she dare to motivate Dimmesdale to escape the secular society and pursuit their own life. Between the lines, we can see this woman’s process of convert clearly.Dimmesdale is a devout priest. And he is regarded as a real priest, a real religionist within the novel. However, he is quite different from Hester. If we use the words like kindness and rebellion to describe Hester Prynne, then we can use hesitation and timidity to depict the movements of Dimmes dale’s own mind. On the one hand, he is looking forward to having romantic love, while on the other hand, he hold the idea that he should not have any other intention except the strong belief of God. He can touch the sunshine and feel warm when Hester is accompanied with him. In the meantime, he is unwilling to leave God for a new life. As a devout priest, the barrier of belief is the biggest obstacle in his mind. There's often a tradeoff inside hisheart between the belief and love. He is tired of being hypocrisy, and dare not to disclose his own sins. When he had to sermonize his thoughts towards Hester when she was publicly exposed, he behaved as a hypocrite. Since he is in dilemma that he feels sorry for Hester and scares of being punished when his secret was disclosed by human beings.Dimmesdale and Hester are the main characters of this tragic love. What they suffered have unmasked the evil ruling of the church from two aspects. The suffering of Hester is an accusation against the draconian laws made by the church. And the result of death for Dimmesdale is a description of the cruel treatments of religious thoughts. It is naturally for Hester to have rebelled thoughts since she is subjected to abuse by all the village people. So there is no doubt that she rewarded the freedom in a certain degree. To the contrary, owing to his noble position, especially the strong belief to God, Dimmesdale is always the slave of religion. When Hester tried to persuade he to escape from this kind of Sodom, he was so excited once he heard the idea, while eventually he gave up the right for happiness for his fear of religion thoughts. From the point of his eyes, the behavior of escape is a matter that never can be absolved. As a matter of fact, although they escape from the cruel ruling of church, they cannot live in a happy life for the reason that he have no way to rid the religion thoughts of inwardly and ultimately.Chillingworth, as a hypocritical and cruel person ruling by the church in depth, he has no feeling towards his wife. What he has owned is his desire to be in possession. Despite he knew the fact that Hester would suffer a lot if she married to him. Their combination is just a misunderstanding. In order to fulfill his selfish desire, he just felt at ease to their unfortunate marriage. And once he found that his wife was unfaithful to him, his cruel nature exposed at once. For his revenge, he changed his name and intertwined with Dimmesdale like a viper. He appeared as a reliable friend in front of Dimmesdale, and then cheated him to expose all his secretes publicly. He didn’t uncover the secret of Dimmesdale not because of his generosity but for his conspiracy. Chillingworth, is a typical negative character in the novel, Hawthorne portrays this character deeply and profoundly. The great success of The Scarlet Letter in psychological description has put Hawthorne into a position of one of the most famous novelists in America. He created a new era for American romantic novel and psychoanalytic novel.。

红字英文版读书报告The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a classical novel in American literature in the 19th century. Since the first Chinese translation of The Scarlet Letter appeared in the 1950’s scholars and readers in this country have shown an ever-increasing interest in his works. Its immortal enchantment lies in not only its condemnation of the negative impact of Puritan society on people’s spirit, but also its affirmation of goodness. The novel aims at criticizing severely Puritanical asceticism, suggesting Hawthorne’s further thinking over the “original sin” “good and evil” “soul salvation” “total depravity” by analyzing the four main characters in the novel. The novel concerns the consequence caused by the sin and people’s attitude towards sin rather than the sin itself. He believes man can do good deeds to get rid of evil in his heart. The introduction of the author:Hawthorne was born in 1804, the town of Salem, Massachusetts, a decline of family. His Puritan ancestors had participated in the persecution of heretics was an event. Hawthorne’s father was a captain, in his death at age 4. 1821, because of Hawthorne relatives is funding into the Institute ofHakata. He graduated from the school in 1825. Back to the Salem Town he works in writi ng. Hawthorne’s short stories are mostly drawn from the New England history or real life, focusing on the fate of humanity and human problems. “The Scarlet Letter” was written in 1851.A reasonable description of marriage by the young woman bound for theCalvinists are guilty of adultery was prohibited public display, exposed the system was under the rule of colonial politics and religion in some of the darkness. 19th-century novel reveals the era of capitalist development, the United States Code, the law of social cruelty, religious deception and moral hypocrisy. The story is followed like this:The protagonist of the novel was a young woman named Hester who was punished to wear the scarlet letter “A” to signify that she was an husband,Chillingworth, was a scholar much older than sent her to America but he himself failed to waiting for her husband,Hester fell in love with a local young minister named had an affair with him and later gave birth to she was shamed publicly on the town scaffold, she still refused to reveal her lover’s order to punish her, people forced her towear the scarlet then, she and her daughter Pearl lived in a cottage at the edge of the forest and was alienated by the rest of the ,this put her in a special position to observe and think about the lover, the young minister, lacked courage to confess his sin publicly, felt guilty and tormented himself both mentally and this gradually ruined his the same time,Chillingworth disguised himself as a doctor and stayed in Dimmesdale’s the sake of revenge,he tried very hard to find outthe connection between the minister’s anguish and Hester’s ,Hester revealed Chillingworth’s true identity to Dimmesdale and asked him to escape to Europe the plain was destroyed by wicked the end,Dimmesdale confessed his adultery with Hester in his last tore away his ministerial garments and revealed his breast,on which there was a same mark as the scarlet were totally shocked and the minister fell onto the scaffold and his death,Chillingworth was left with no object for his revenge,he wasted away and soon ,Hester and Pearl made the story of scarlet letter grow into a years later,Hester suddenly returned to the town and resumed her charity the time of her death, she still wore the scarlet letter on her ,it was no longer the symbol of shame but the symbol of able and angle. The analysis of the novel:The Scarlet Letter also has literial and symbolic meanings, and its meaning shifts as time goes ,it intends to mark Hester as an adulterer,it’s a symbol of at the end of the story,it becomes a powerful social identity of changed the meaning of the scarlet letter in people’s mind through her own effort: accepting the assigned identity and reconfrigurating it with quiet perseverance and inner main characters of the novel that the author figureselaborately all have special ,the heroine of the novel,is an intelligent,strong-willed and kind-hearted young woman who accepts her sin bravely and finally changes her unfair ,an admirable and respectful minister of the town people, functions mainly as a contrast to Hester. Toward their sin,Hester chooses to accept it and reconfigurate Dimmesdale doesn’t dare to confess it publicly,it makes him feel guilty and suffer endless physical and spiritual torment, death is the only thing that can relieve the different fates of Hester and Dimmesdale,we can see the central idea that the author wants to present to us,namely ,the relationship between sin and stands for the social-defined identity of people, while humanity is our self-defined way in which the society defines a person is often at odds with the way that individuals define fact, sin itself isboth guilty act and an act of affaction,it’s a problematic combination of love and evil. Through the connection and conflict of sin and humanity,we understand the moral strength of human beings. Understanding of the novel:From the story, we can see that the heroes live a “rather-die-than-live” life, and understand the meaning of living and death in Hawthorne’ mind that is to living is to suffering and to atone for crimes while to die is to get relief from sins and rebirth in other world. In our society, the term “evil” has been replaced by terms such as“madness” or “insanity”.People seem to feel the need to understand the minds of perpetrator of evil acts. In a society without a single and solid morality system , we human beings are endowed with exceptional freedom in conscious and behaviour, but we should also take more responsibility for ourselves and the others in the society.第二篇:《红字》读书报告6600字A Book Report of The Scarlet LetterBy Lan Jianlong, 2010The Scarlet Letter is written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, an American novelist, and was published by Shanghai Translation Press in 1989.The story is set in Boston in the 17th century .At that time, the City Fathers moved to New England, and built the houses, the churches as well as the prisons with their own hands. They brought the customs and religion of old England with them, and strong bias towards women. The gist of the story is as follows: Hester Prynne is the female protagonist in this novel. She is a young, beautiful and gentle woman –a perfect woman in people’s eye. However, she married Roger Chilingworth, an old misshapen man, who is also a doctor. She feels no happiness at all. Several years later, her husband was lost on the sea, so with nobody accompanying her, she had to live a lonely life. Just like the flaming fire in the night, a young, energetic priest named Arthur Dimmesdale, came into her life. They fell in love with each other, and they spent a period time of life full of passion and true love. Soon Hester found that she became pregnant. Owing to this, she was arrested and gave birth to a little girl in the prison. At that time, only would she tell the public the name of the adulterer, could she got rid of the imputation. As we know, a priest would be blamed andpunished badly if he does something that is forbidden by God. In order to protect his high position and good reputation, she accepted the shame, wore the scarlet letter, which referred to shame, and stood alone under the scaffold in the public. The person who questioned Hester happened to be Mr. Dimmesdale. Dimmesdale himself had a pure heart--he may couldn’t help crying out that he was the adulterer, but at last he didn’t bring himself to admit his guilt. To him, the letter was a combination of guilty, misery and evilness. From that day on, he had printed the letter A in his mind .Hester’s former husband Chilingworth came back someday and he decided to take revenge on the priest. He pretended to be the priest’s doctor and friend, but his real intention was to gnaw his heart with endless guilty. His revenge lasted for seven years. And finally, Mr. Dimmesdale couldn’t bear the misery hidden deep in his heart, and he told the townspeople, who always thought highly of him, that he was the very man. Standing under the scaffold, he became strong enough to do the thing that he failed to do seven years ago. He pulled open his shirt for them to see the scarlet letter on his chest. No one had ever put the letter on his chest, but they saw the red-hot “A” blazing up. He felt his life was lies, emptiness and death. Luckily, he got a clear conscience in theend. After reading this novel, I begin to understand the western culture and the religion in the 17th century. Here I can only give you my own view instead of the common view. I just analysis the characters in this story as follows, because of the limitation of the number of words. The Scarlet Letter offers an extraordinary insight into the norms and behavior of the 17th century in American Puritan society. The basic conflicts and problems of its main characters, however, are familiar to readers in the present. The female protagonist, has borne a child out of wedlock and has been jailed for over three months and senten ced to wear a symbol of her adultery, a scarlet “A” on her dress at all times. It concerns about the moral, emotional and psychological effect of the sin on people in general. It’s not simply a love story or a story of sin. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the scarlet letters to symbolize the harshness of Puritan society, showing how they brand sinners for life. The story happened in Boston about 200 years ago. It narrates love affairs between three persons. Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale and Hester’s husband, Who called himself Roger Chillingworth. He is an old doctor. Hester does not lovehim at all. Another man is a young minister, Dimmesdale, who has a high position among ministers and is highly respected among his people in town. Hester and Dimmesdale love each other. But their love is forbidden in that time. It is sinful. Due to this, Hester is punished by society with a letter A on her chest, which considered an evil, a shame. In this novel, the mainline seems to be around the letter A. Hester is brave enough to face the cruel reality. She is always with a mind of courage. She has been alone with her child for so long, with little communication. Shame!Hopelessness! Loneliness! Hester has to wear the letter A day after day, seven years as for punishment and ill fame. When a woman has lived through a difficult experience, her character changes a great deal. If she be all tenderness, she will die. If she survives, the tenderness will leave her .Hester’s charitable deeds and quiet humility have earned her a reprieve from the scorn of the community. The letter on her chest represents her work on earth, always helping others, without expecting any thanks. Never afterwards, does that scarlet letter leave her chest. The townspeople no longer view the letter as a punishment, but rather as representing her great strength and bravery and thy say it means “Able”. But Arthur Dimmesdale, his sin against Hesterand Pearl is that he will not acknowledge them as his wife and daughter in the daylight. He keeps his dreadful secret from all those under his care in the church for seven years for fear that he will lose their love and will not be forgiven. He is too weak to admit his sins. He suffers from mysterious heart trouble, seemingly caused by psychological distress. What’s worse, he is an advisor to the townspeople about their sins. After Mr. Dimmesdale’s death , no one changes more in appearance than Roger Chillingworth. All his strength and energy has been used to harm his patient. This unhappy man has made his aim in life to add to the suffering of the young minister. When the evil old man no longer has such a purpose, the devil takes him back to the hell. It is a curious subject of observation, however, whether hatred or love are not of the same place. Each takes a great deal of emotion from one person. The two feelings seem basically the same, expect that one is smiled upon by God, while the other is worshipped by the devil. Before reading the book, I didn’t know what the writer would sayabout an ordinary letter “A”. But after reading, I have learnt that you should be brave enough to show your guilty, or it will be worse to hide it in mind. It is like a snake keeps bitingyour heart and won’t make you feel better until you speak your mind.。

Hester went there first and Roger went back to Europe to disposed things left. Hester fell in love with the young priest, Mr. Dimmesdale, while she was waiting for her husband. She had an affair with him and later gave birth to a daughter, Pearl. In order to protect the priest, she was punished by a red A on her chest which means adultery. Ever after, Hester lived a plain life, but she always dressed Pearl up very well. Although people put Hester to shame whenever saw her, she was still willing to help others. She never complained others. She made Pearl a happy life and didn’t restrain heralot. Her lover, the young priest, felt guilty and tortured himself mentally and physically. For the sake of revenge, he tried very hard tofind out the connection between the minister’s anguish and Hester’s secret. Later,Hester told Roger’s true identity to the priest and asked him to escape to Europe together. However, their plan was destroyed by evilRoger. In the end, the priest confessed his adultery with Hester. Hetore away his clothes and revealed his chest, on which there was a same scarlet letter.People were totally shocked and the priest fell down and died. And after that, Roger was left with no aim in his life. He gave his property to Pearl and soon died. Later, Hester and Pearl disappeared. People got no news of them from then on. Many years later, Pearl married someoneand had her own home, while Hester returned to the town and resumed todo something to help others. Until the end of her life, Hester still wore the scarlet letter A. But it has become the symbol of able, angel, admirable and other good things. My thoughts:First, this novel give those who have made mistakes hope. In fact, I don’t know whether it is right for Hester to fall in loveand have an affair with the priest. But Hester’s good deeds make people whoinsult her at the beginning respect and admire her. This kind of change gives many people in dark hope for better life and encourages more people to help others. Second, honesty should be our principle of life most of time. The priest dare not confess to public at the beginning. His inner guilty tortured him day and night. When he confessed at last, he felt peaceful. Finally, we ought to know what we are doing and what we should do. Roger is a pathetic person. He aimed to avenge, but when his enemy died, he was at a loss. This is, actually, because he didn’t chooseright and meaningful things to do.。

《红字》英文读后感

《红字》英文读后感As I finished reading Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter”, I can’t help but feel overwhelmed by the book’s timeless relevance and piercing message. The story is a powerful exploration of guilt, redemption, and the destructive power of society’s overwhelming judgments. In “The Scarlet Letter”, Hawthorne masterfully combines the evocative power of symbolism, setting, and character development to paint a vivid portrait of a society that condemns a young mother for committing adultery. At the heart of the novel is the main character, Hester Prynne. Hester is a strong, independent woman who refuses to submit to societal expectations, even though she knows that her actions will bring upon her the ultimate punishment. As she is forced to wear the scarlet letter “A” on her chest, Hester bears the weight of her sin and society’s condemnation with stoic grace. Through her character, Hawthorne exposes the hypocrisy of Puritan society, which is quick to judge and condemn those who fail to live up to its strict moral standards.Hester’s lover, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, is also developed in detail. He represents the internal struggle many people face when their actions conflict with their personal beliefs. Dimmesdale is a respected member of the community and a man of God, but his affair with Hester leaves him wracked with guilt and shame. What makes Dimmesdale’s situation so compelling is his inability to come forward with his secret sin, even as he preaches about the importance of personal confessi on and repentance. Dimmesdale’s internal struggle with guilt and the burden of his sin make him a tragic figure that many readers will be able to relate to.Throughout the novel, Hawthorne uses symbolism to create a powerful commentary on Puritan society. The scarlet letter itself is a powerful symbol of shame and societal isolation, as well as the suffocating moral scrutiny and judgment of the townspeople. However, as the novel progresses, the “A” also becomes a symbol of redemption, as Hester uses her shame as a catalyst for becoming a stronger, more compassionate person who helps others in need. One of the most striking aspects of “The Scarlet Letter” is its settings. The novel is set in Boston, Massachusetts, in the mid-1600s, a place and time in which strict Puritan morality pervaded daily life. Hawthorne’s descriptions of the town and its inhabitants are both vivid and evocative. The dark and foreboding forest, which plays a prominent role in the story, is a symbol of the wild and untamed nature of human desire, in stark contrast to the ordered and rigid community. In conclusion, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter” is a masterful exploration of sin, redemption, and the destructive power of societal judgment. Through the book’s evocative setting, masterfully developed characters, and powerful symbolism, Hawthorne comments on the hypocrisy and strictness of Puritan society. Even after more than 150 years, “The Scarlet Letter” remains a powerful work of literature that continues to resonate with readers around the world.。

《红字》读后感英文500字《Red Ink》 is an emotional work full of love and warmth. It talks about a family's life, breaking away from their poor environment, but also their fate and their special feelings. The novel mainly focuses on the child's growth in the family, experiencing the vicissitudes of life, experiencing joys and sorrows, and experiencing the career and emotional pursuits of parents. The family's poverty has become the originator of the story, and the background of this story is the growth of the family in a poor environment. The novel is full of warmth, love and understanding, as well as full of compassion. In this book, I feel that little people can break the poverty cycle in their family and have been successful in the process of struggle. The parents of this family sacrificed a lot and worked tirelessly to bring the children out of their slums, giving them a better chance in life. At the same time, we can see that the parents also think that their children are worth more than material. They let their children stay true to themselves, follow their dreams wholeheartedly and do something meaningful in their lives. This book is full of encouragement and motivation and tells us no matter how difficult our lives are, we should never give up. There is always hope, and struggle is the only way forward. We should cherish and respect everything given to us, including freedom and the ability to struggle for life.In conclusion,《Red Ink》is an inspiring book that speaks to all ofus, reminding us to keep striving, believing in ourselves and never giving up on our dreams. It’s a beautiful tribute to the power of perseverance and dedication.。

红字读书报告(英⽂版)A Reading Report of The Scarlet LetterThe Scarlet Letter was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Nathaniel Hawthorne (July 4, 1804—May 19, 1864) was an American novelist and short story writer. He was a key figure in the development of American literature for his tales of the nation’s colonial history. His four major novels were written between 1850 and 1860, and they were The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, The Blithedale Romance, and The Marble Faun. The story took place in Boston about 200 years ago. It narrated love affairs between three persons. They were Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale and Roger Chillingworth. Roger was an old misshapen man and a doctor. Hester was his wife, but she did not love him at all. Two years ago, Hester was sent alone across the ocean by Roger. However, Roger did not show up thereafter. While waiting, Hester fell in love with another man, Dimmesdale, who was a young minister and had a high position among ministers and was highly respected among his people in town. Hester and Dimmesdale loved each other, but their love was forbidden in that time. It was sinful because they committed adultery. And the secret was finally discovered because of Hester’s pregnancy. Due to this, Hester was punished by society with a letter A on her chest, which was considered as an evil and a shame. However, Hester refused to tell the name of the father even when she was asked to stand on the scaffold. And she chose to bear all the shame and punishment by herself. At the same time, Roger Chillingworth appeared and tried to take revenge on the adulterer. As time goes on, Hester’s daughter, Pearl was seven years old. And Roger became a real devil. He pretended to live with Dimmesdale to treat his disease. Actually, he just wanted to revenge him. Finally, Dimmesdale was weaker and weaker. In the end, Dimmesdale told the truth to the folks on the scaffold that he was Pearl’s father, and then he died. Roger also died after one year because the revenge took his all energy and strength. Hester then lived alone in her cottage far away from the city by herself. Pearl became a rich woman and lived in a happy life. When Hester died, she was buried next to Dimmesdale. The two shared a single tombstone, with a deep colored letter A shiningbrightly. In my opinion, the mainline is around the letter A in this novel. As the chief symbol, it has various meanings in different plots. In the beginning of the story, the letter A means adultery. The story begins with the scene that Hester stands on the scaffold with the A on her chest, and it is the way of punishment for the crime of adultery. It is known that Hester does not love her husband, Roger Chillingworth. So Hester and Dimmesdale fall in love with each other. However, it is forbidden at that time. Due to that, Hester is punished by society with a letter A on her chest, which is considered as a shame. Her behavior is disgraceful and she is looked down upon by others as if she is a devil from the hell that commits a terrible crime. So the letter A represents adultery in the beginning. Then the letter A changes its meaning in next plot. After Hester is punished on the scaffold, the folks think she is a bad woman. They look down upon her and treat her in an unfriendly manner. So she chooses to live solitarily in her cottage, which is far away from the city and she has no friends in the world with Pearl being her only companion. It suggests that Hester is very lonely and alone. So the scarlet letter A is also a symbol of being alone and alienation. At last, the scarlet letter A changes its meaning into being able, admirable and an angel. When a woman has lived through a difficult experience, her character changes a great deal. If she be all tenderness, she will die. If she survives, the tenderness will leave her. So when Hester is abandoned by all of the people, she is so tough to make living by herself. Her needlework is very excellent and is very popular among people. Then she earns money by doing that. The scarlet letter A has turned its meaning to be able. How difficult for a woman to feed a family! But she did it. Besides, in order to expiate her sin, she tries her best to help others and does not need to get their return. Her charitable deeds and quiet humility have earned her a reprieve from the scorn of the community. And because of that, she is respected by all the people gradually. So the letter A represents not only a symbol of adultery, being alone and alienation, but also a symbol of able, admirable and angel.。

《红字》英文读后感

《红字》英文读后感

《红字》英文读后感"The Scarlet Letter" is a novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne that explores the themes of guilt, hypocrisy, and redemption. Set in 17th century Puritan Massachusetts, the story follows Hester Prynne, a young woman who is forced to wear a scarlet letter "A" on her clothing after being convicted of adultery. As I read this book, I was struck by the way Hawthorne depicts the harsh morality of Puritan society. Hester's punishment is a prime example of the strict punishments that were imposed on those who were deemed to have violated the strict codes of behavior that dominated Puritan life. Hawthorne also explores the hypocrisy of this society, as many of the characters who condemn Hester are themselves guilty of sins such as deceit and hypocrisy.Despite the bleak atmosphere of the novel, there are moments of hope and redemption. The figure of Arthur Dimmesdale, the minister who is revealed to be Hester's secret lover, is particularly powerful. Throughout the novel, we see his struggle with his own sin and guilt, and his eventual confession is a moment of great emotional release. One aspect of this book that I found particularly fascinating was the use of symbolism. The scarlet letter itself is a powerful symbol of guilt and shame, while other symbols such as the rosebush and the scaffold have multiple meanings that add depth and complexity to the story.Ultimately, "The Scarlet Letter" is a powerful exploration of the human condition. It is a story of sin and redemption, of the strugglebetween society's moral codes and individual morality. It is a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is always the possibility of redemption and hope.As I delved deeper into the story, I began to appreciate the complexity of the characters and their motivations. Hester herself is a fascinating character, who remains dignified and strong despite the shame and isolation that she endures. Her relationship with her daughter, Pearl, is also intriguing, as they embody different aspects of femininity in a society that offers little room for individual expression. At the same time, other characters such as Roger Chillingworth, Hester's vengeful husband, and the scheming townspeople add to the tension and drama of the story. Hawthorne's deft characterization and exploration of their inner lives creates a rich and nuanced portrait of Puritan society. The themes of guilt and redemption are explored through the religious belief systems of the Puritans, but also resonate with broader human experiences. The idea that one's actions can have far-reaching consequences is one that remains relevant today, and Hawthorne's exploration of the motivations behind sin and the possibility of redemption is timeless. The symbolic use of nature throughout the novel is also striking. The wilderness that surrounds the Puritan settlement is both a source of terror and enchantment, representing both the dangers of the unknown and the possibility of a different kind of life. The contrast between the harsh, ordered world of the Puritans and the wild beauty of the natural world adds another layer of meaning to the story.Overall, "The Scarlet Letter" is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that continues to resonate with readers today. Its examination of guilt, redemption, and the tension between societal expectations and individual morality make it an important work of American literature.。

Perseverance and Kindness Make A Brilliant Life— After reading The Scarlet LetterNot only is The Scarlet Letter the most successful representative work of Nathaniel Hawthorn, but also the most prestigious work in the field of American romanticism novels. The story offers an extraordinary insight into the norms and behavior of American Puritan society in the 17th century. However, the basic conflicts and problems of the main characters are rather familiar to readers at present. The story was set Boston in the middle 17th when people are brutally persecuted by the authority both mentally and physically. Heist, a young beautiful woman, suffered the adversity of marriage, whereas unfortunately married to a Warlock who is handicapped and sickish, with whom she has nothing in common. Subsequently, the man got lost during a voyage and disappeared ever since, leaving endless pain and woe to the young woman. But exactly during this tough time, suddenly breaks in a man. They fell in love and spend a pleasant and unforgettable time with each other. All good things didn’t last long. It was not long before the poor young woman was arrested in the name of adultery because the fact of pregnancy was exposed to public. She gave birth to the child anyway.According to the doctrine at that time, Heist could be assoiled only under the condition of making it clear the name of the father. Dramatically, the man who was in charge of the interrogation is her lover. She wouldn’t tell and was sentenced to wear a symbol of her adultery, a scarlet “A” on her dress at all times. Her husband Chillingworth came back on the day of the trial and didn’t want to acknowledge his identity and threaten the couple by all means.Throughout the novel, the mainline seems to be around the letter “A”. Imagine how unbearable and shameful it is to wear the “Adultery” label day after day, seven years for punishment and ill fame! Yet, Hester is brave and determined enough to face the cruel reality and brought up the kid Pearl by herself. As for the handsome priest Arthur Dimmesdale, however, he committed a sin against Hester and Pearl by not acknowledging them as his wife and daughter in the daylight. For seven years, he keeps the dreadful secret from all those who are under his care in the church, for fear that he will lose their love and will not be forgiven. He suffers from mysterious heart trouble, seemingly caused by psychological distress. He wastes his time in agony, played both the role of saint and that of sinner. The couple has tried to flee to Europe and live with Pearl as a family, yet failed under Chillingworth’s obstruction. The novel reaches its peak when Dimmesdale goes to townspeople’s faces after the plan failed, he loses his clothes and a clear scarlet “A” is shown to everyone.Just as the author said, “His belief supported him but also imprisoned him.”He is too weak to honestly admit his sins but also suffers in hisheart. In the end, Dimmesdale died in the arm of Heist. The painstaking mother and daughter are freed at last. They go abroad and live a happy life. When Pearl is married and has kids, Heist goes back to the town. When a woman has lived through big rise and fall, her character would change a great deal. If she is beaten by all sufferings, she dies. If she survives, the tenderness will leave her. With time passes, Hester’s charitable deeds and humility have earned her some praises. She is always warm-hearted, ready to help others without expecting any thanks —even if people still look down upon her. Gradually, the townspeople began to forget about Heist’s sins. One day a kid asked his mother, “What does the scarlet ‘A’ on Heist’s dress mean?” His mother replied, “I do not remember, may be Able? Or Angel?” The townspeople no longer view the letter as a punishment, but rather as a label that represents her capability and kindness. After Dimmesdale’s death, no one changes more in appearance than Roger Chillingworth. All his strength and energy have been used to harm his patient. This unhappy man has made his aim in life to add to the suffering of the two miserable lovers. When the evil old man no longer has such a purpose, the devil takes him back to the hell.It is a curious subject of observation and inquiry, whether hatred and love be not the same thing at bottom. Each takes a great deal of emotion from one’s heart. The two feelings seem basically the same, except thatone is smiled upon by God, while the other is worshiped by the devil. When Hester dies, she is buried next to Dimmesdale. The two lovers share a single tombstone, with a deep colored letter “A” shining brightly and showing people her capability and kindness. From Hawthorn’s depict in The Scarlet Letter, I was deeply affected by the whole story as if I was also there. Every plot was gripping and exciting. The novel has shown a complete progress of self-salvation by protagonists themselves. At the end of the novel, I was deeply moved by Heist and Dimmesdale. In old China, when there was also stern doctrines and rules for women’s behavior, a woman committed adultery would choose to die. As the saying goes, all troubles end when the main trouble ends. However, bad words and ill reputation would stick to her whenever she was mentioned. Heist chose a totally different way for her and her child: live bravely and let time judge everything. A brilliant and worthwhile life was achieved all by Heist’s perseverance and kindness, which is rather impressive to me.While Dimmesdale, although wasn’t brave enough to admit everything, he wasn’t that numbed and cold-hearted. At least, it was Dimmesdale’s braveness that set the mother and daughter free.。

concerns about the moral, emotional and psychological effect of the sin on people in general. It’s not simply a love story or a story of sin.The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the scarlet A Reading Report of The Scarlet LetterThe Scarlet Letter was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
