Today, you are going to learn informal and formal conversation in English on the phone, let’s get started. Let’s start with informal conversations on the phone in English, these are when you call a friend or maybe a family member in English, you are just chatting about getting together or you just want to talk, this is something that is a little bit less common nowadays because you are more likely to send a text message to a friend or family member, and we don’t use home laid under lines as often you are more likely to use cellphone, you not really going to leave voicemail, you are probably going to send a text instead, so if you have learned phone conversations at school or long time ago, it might be a little bit simple at now, because there is a lot as many options. Let’s take a work at two conversations that are informal on the phone, and you will see how straight forward and simple this can be: Hi, is this Daniel? Yes, it is. Hi, is this Benjamin? No, sorry, you have the wrong Number; Oh, sorry, thanks; No problem;

That wasn’t too bad right? For this simple and straight forward, well, if you are going to talk on the phone in a formal situation, let’s say for your job you need to call another department, or you need to talk with some customers, this is going to be a little more serious,

because you want to be polite, you don’t want to be rude, and you want make sure that they can understand exactly what you are saying, so that take a little bit more time to talk about formal English conversation. Let’s start with a basic beginning to a conversation you might have at your work place in English. Hi, may I please speak with Daniel? Speaking, how can I help you? This one was pretty clear, right? You call someone, the person pick up the phone, and they want to talk, they have time to talk, but what if you call a secretary, and you want to talk with the marketing department, well, maybe they are available, maybe they are not, maybe the person wants to ask you some question to see if the marketing department actually wants to talk you, it could get a little more complicated, let’s talk about 3 different sceneries. Let’s imagine that you are calling the marketing department, and the people who pick up the phone answers affirmatively, then they answer with some kind of filter-question, and then they answer negatively, what do those 3 different conversation look like? Let’s listen: Hi, this is Daniel from Microsoft, may I please speak with someone from marketing department? Yes, just one moment. Hi, this is Daniel from Microsoft; may I please speak with someone from marketing department? May I ask what you are calling about?
