Only after the war was over was man able to realize the wickedness of the atomic bomb.

)
Only then did I realize the importance of English.

Only in this way can we improve ourselves.

Only after you finish it can you leave.

The contract was signed only after bitter negotiations.

Only after bitter negotiations was the contract signed.)

常见的否定词有:never, hardly, scarcely, rarely, barely, seldom, not only, not until, nor, little, nowhere, hardly….when, no sooner….than, by no means, under no circumstances 等。

(但这时候也存在特例,假如否定词不是修饰整个句子,而只是限定句子主语,则不用倒装:Not only I but also he has been there.
Never have I come across such a difficult problem.

Seldom do I read such magazines.

No sooner had they left than the bus arrived.

Hardly did I think it possible.

Not only should we not be afraid of difficulties, but we should try our best to overcome them.

Not until midnight did it stop raining.

(正常语序是:It did not stop raining until midnight.
By no means will this method produce satisfactory results.

如:“So+a./adv.”

To such a degree did he go on with tedious speech that some of us began to yawn.

(4)在含有were, should, had的虚拟语气中,省去if后,须倒装,要把从句中的were, had 或should 移到主语之前。

If I had been in your place, I wouldn’t have given it up so early.
=Had I been in your place, I wouldn’t have given it up so early.

If he were to succeed, the sun would rise from the west.
=Were he to succeed, the sun would rise from the west.

If you should be asked about this, say that you know nothing.
=Should you be asked about this, say……

Small as/though the atom is, we can smash it.

Tired as/though he was, he went on working.
(=Although he was very tired, he went on working.)

Child as/though she is, she knows a great deal.

May you have a pleasant trip.

a consumer psychologist…

the company that…

So much importance was attached to intellectual pursuits nowhere else in colonial America. People attached so much importance to intellectual pursuits nowhere else in colonial America.

At the core of this debate is chairman Gerald Levin,...... At the core of this debate提前,主语是chairman Gerald Levin。

who took over for the late Steve Rose in 1992引导的定语从句,修饰Gerald Levin。

7. There is pressure for change from within the profession, but opponents of change among the regulators insist that keeping outsiders out of a law firm isolates lawyers from the pressure to make money rather than serve clients ethically. (2014 Text 2)
I)opponent n.

a political opponent(一个政治对手);opponents of the regime (政权的反对者);leading/main/chief opponent(主要对手)。

);ethical a.

ethical issues/questions/problems (伦理/道德问题)。

该句中的there be 句型是一个典型的全部倒装句,真正的主语是pressure for change from within the profession, but后面的分句包含了一个从句,即insist后面that引导的宾语从句。

从句的主语是一个动名词短语keeping outsiders out of a low firm,谓语动词是isolate,后面的rather than相当于instead of,表示“而不是”,连接的是make money和severe client。

On the ground lies a man whose leg is broken.

Such was Albert Einstein, a simple man of great achievements.

Such was the story he told me.

例如:Away flew the birds.

Out went the children.

There comes the bus!

Down came the rain.

Bang went the firecracker.

The door burst open and in rushed a stranger.

Happy is he who devotes himself to the cause of communism.

At the center of the big room over there is a table that is made of wood which is imported from Brazil of South America.

Present at the meeting were the school headmaster, the English teacher, and the students’parents.

There are not many people who want to read this book.

There once lived a pack of wolves in this cave.

1. In a world where average is officially over, there are many things we need to do to support employment, but nothing would be more important than passing some kind of G.I. Bill for the 21st century that ensures that every American has access to post-high school education. (2013英语二Text 1)

III)ensure v.

Please ensure(that) all lights are switched off.(请确保所用的灯都是关着的。

)She would ensure him a place in society.(她会保证他有社会地位。

第一个分句为there be 倒装结构,其中where average is officially over是定语从句,we need to do to support employment是省略了that的定语从句。

but之后是第二个分句,主语是nothing,谓语是would be,其后的部分为表语,that ensures…是定语从句,其中嵌套了宾语从句that every American has access to post-high school education.
