Bacon’s essays
Although Bacon was at one time vastly over-praised as a scientist, he remains unrivalled (无对手的)as the advocate of science, as the electrifying prophet of Man's control of nature. And his essays remain unrivalled for so much worldly wisdom in so little space. They cover a wide variety of subjects, such as love, truth, friendship, parents and children, studies, riches and many others. In arrangement they are precise and well ordered, as one would expect from a scientist. Many of his sentences have become wise old sayings. Bacon writes fifty-eight essays.

Bibliographical Introduction(1)
Though Bacon was Shakespeare’s contemporary, he is generally regarded as the chief figure in English prose (散文) in the first half of the 17th century and his essays began the long tradition of the English essay in the history of English literature. Bacon was born in London. His father was Lord Keeper of the Seal (章玺)during Queen Elizabeth’s reign. He studied at Cambridge and was brought up with an aversion to medieval scholasticism. He left Cambridge after he had been there for two years. Then he pursued the study of law ,gaining admission to the bar in 1582,and at the age of twenty-six was elected to parliament.
