'ago' - at a certain time before now

Ago 与现在相关，从现在往前算有多久，也常与一般过去时连用:

Your mother phoned five minutes ago. Can you phone her back?

I saw her for the first time at film festival in Cannes some twenty years ago.

'before' - any time before now / at a certain time before then

Before与过去特定之前的时间相关（此时可换用earlier或previously），也可表示现在之前的不确定的时间；连用的时态可以是1. 常用现在完成时；2. 一般过去时也可以，但稍少见

如果before用作介词，它常用于指时间，不太用于指地点位置（可以用in front of）:

【例子】

“Life insurance, before available only to young, healthy persons, can now be obtained for old people and even for pets.”这里before虽然不是指地点，但却极不自然，可以换用"previously", "formerly", "once", "at one time"等.
