So if we want to explore the history of the self-reliance valuedevelopment, it is unavoidable to speak of Ralph Waldo Emerson, the famous writer and philosopher in America. He expressed the American pioneer spirit in his 1841 essay, "Self-Reliance." In this essay, Emerson stated that people should be independent, not conforming to the opinions of others. Emerson believed that each person should be content and at peace within himself. To a great extent, it contributed to the spread of the self-reliance value.So we can see that the self-reliance value roots deeply in the American history and it also thrives in the mind of every American nowadays. After searching the Internet, I am attracted by an interesting phenomenon in American bookstores. Most bookstores in America include do-it-yourself books on topics ranging from repairing washing machines to planting a garden. By contrast, the similar kind of books can only be found in a nookhard to take notice of. Why? Chinese are not all thumbs. Americans are not all handyman. The big difference just comes of the value difference. For Americans, exploiting their potentials in a new field means pursuing happiness and inspiration. They are willing to use their own hand to create a new world, handle problems and jump out of comfort zone. They enjoy relying on themselves in a free world.Other than the daily life, we can still find the footprint of the self-reliance value in the superstructure like the measures of government, lows, polities, etc. As Jefferson, the American president, wrote the oath for American schoolchildren, "I promise to use my critical talent, to discover my independent thought, and to accept education so that I can judge." The oath was personally written by Jefferson, the third President of the United States, for American schoolchildren. Of particular importance is the lack of a hereditary aristocracy.Because titles of nobility were forbidden in the Constitution, no formal class system developed in the US. In the early years of American history many immigrants chose to leave older European societies because they believed that they had a better chance to succeed in America. In the old county, the country from which they came, their place in life was determined largely by the social class into which they were born. They knew that in America they would not have to live among noble families who possessed great power and wealth inherited and accumulated over hundreds of years. The lover social class into which many were born did not prevent them from trying to rise to a higher social position. This is why American respect and admire Self-made millionaire. It is important to understand what most Americans mean when they say they believe in equality of opportunity. They do not mean that everyone is –or should be-equal. However, they do mean that each individual should have an equal chance for success.The price to be paid for this equality of opportunity is competition. If much of life is seen as a race, then a person must run the race in order to succeed, a person must compete with others to succeed.Material Wealth and Hard WorkThe third reason why immigrants have come is to have a better life---that is, to raise theirstandard of living. Because of its incredibly abundant natural resources, the US appeared to be a land of plenty where millions could come to seek their fortunes. Many immigrants achieved material success and many became very attached to material things. Material wealth became a value to the American people. Placing a high value on material possession is called materialism, but Americans do not like to be called materialistic because they feel that this unfairly accuses them of loving only material things and of having no religious values. In fact, most Americans do have other values and ideals. Then why is acquiring and maintaining a large number of material possessions still of great importance to most Americans? One reason is that material wealth has traditionally been a widely accepted measure of social status in the US. Because Americans rejected the European system of hereditary aristocracy and titles of nobility, they had to did a substitute for judging social status. The quality and quantity of an individual’s material possessions became an accepted measure of success and social status.Americans have paid a price for their material wealth: hard work. Only by hard work could the natural resources be converted into material possessions, allowing a more comfortable standard of living. The six basic values presented above do not tell the whole story of the American character. But it is the motivating forces behind the people and their institutions. These traditional basic beliefs and values affect important aspects of American life: religion, business, work and play, politics, the family and education.。
