They can use their sense of vision and smell to tell the difference between people who pose athreat and those who do not. In Kenya, researchers found that elephants react differently to clothing worn by men of the Maasaiand Kamba ethnic groups. Young Maasai men spear animals and thus pose a threat to elephants; Kamba men are mainly farmers and are not a danger to elephants. In an experiment conducted by animal scientists, elephants were first presented with clean clothing or clothing that had been worn for five days by either a Maasai or a Kamba man. When the elephants detected the smell of clothing worn by a Maasai man, they moved away from the smell faster and took longer to relax than when they detected the smells of either clothing worn by Kamba men or clothing that had not been worn at all. Garment color also plays a role, though in a different way. In the same study, when the elephants saw red clothing not worn before, they reacted angrily, as red is typically worn by Maasai men. Rather than running away as they did with the smell, the elephants acted aggressively toward the red clothing. The researchers believe that the elephants’ emotional reactions are due to their different interpretations of the smells and the sights. Smelling a potential danger means that a threat is nearby and the best thing to do is run away and hide. Seeing a potential threat without its smell means that risk is low. Therefore, instead of showing fear and running away, the elephants express their anger and become aggressive. 41. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true about Kamba and Maasai people? A. Maasai people are a threat to elephants. B. Kamba people raise elephants for farming. C. Both Kamba and Maasai people are elephant hunters. D. Both Kamba and Maasai people traditionally wear red clothing. 42. How did the elephants react to smell in the study? A. They attacked a man with the smell of new clothing. B. They needed time to relax when smelling something unfamiliar. C. They became anxious when they smelled Kamba-scented clothing. D. They were frightened and ran away when they smelled their enemies. 43. What is the main idea of this passage? A. Elephants use sight and smell to detect danger. B. Elephants attack people who wear red clothing. C. Scientists are now able to control elephants’ emotions. D. Some Kenyan tribes understand elephants’ emotions very well. B The common cold is the world’s most widespread illness, which is probably why there are moremyths(神话,想象) about it than any of the other illnesses. The most widespread mistake of all is that colds are caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one.If cold causes colds, it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not.And in isolated Arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected(感染的) people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes. At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in Experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be doused(浸入) with cold water, and then stood about dripping(滴干) wet in drafty(通风的) rooms. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose. If cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter? In spite of the most painstaking research, no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on. No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppressors such as aspirin, but all they do is to relieve the symptoms. 44.The fact that the Eskimos don’t suffer colds shows that . A.colds are really full of myths B.viruses are the factors causing colds C.colds are more severe than other illnesses D.the idea that cold leads to colds doesn’t stand up .The experiments mentioned in Paragraph 3 made it clear that . A.being doused with cold water did harm to one’s body B.taking hot baths made the volunteers easy to be tired C.it was viruses not wet and cold that made people have colds D.people who would like to exercise in the rain got colds more easily 46.According to the passage, colds are commonly seen in winter because . A.there is great difference between indoor and outdoor temperature B.viruses can go into people’s warm bodies more easily in winter C.staying together indoors makes it easier for viruses to pass on D.people are usually weak because of the extreme cold in winter .What does the passage mainly discuss? A.The reason and the way people catch colds. B.The continued spread of colds. C.The experiments on colds. D.The myths about colds. C After giving a talk at a high school, I was asked to pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me. I was told it would mean a great deal to him, so I agreed. During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He had muscular dystrophy (肌肉萎缩症). When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to five, and then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles and going for my dreams. I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, “Why me?” He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weights with me. When we had finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I had won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.” Last summer I received a letter from Matthew’s parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. They wanted me to have a letter he had written to me a few days before: Dear Dick, My mum said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. I also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that I don’t have long to live any more, but I still smile as much as I can. I told you someday that I would go to the Olympics and win a gold medal, but I know now I will never get to do that. However, I know I’m a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you. Thank you for loving me. Your friend, Matthew 48. The boy looked forward to meeting the author because _________. A. he was also good at weight lifting B. he wanted to get to the Olympics and win a medal C. he was one of the author’s students D. he admired the author very much 49. From the passage we learn that _________. A. Matthew was an athlete B. Matthew was an optimistic and determined boy C. The author used to have the same disease as Matthew had D. Matthew became a champion before he died 50. Matthew didn’t accept the author’s medal because _________. A. he thought it was too expensive B. he was sure that he could win one in the future C. he thought it was of no use to him as he would die soon D. he would not be pitied by others 51. What would be the best title for this passage?A. A sick boy.B. A special friend.C. A real champion.D. A famous athlete. D Cyberspace, the connections between computers in different places, considered as a real place where information, messages and pictures exist, mirrors the real world in many ways. People ask for information, play games, and share hobbies. Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship, or even love. Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited to words on a computer screen.Identity and appearance mean very little in cyberspace.Rather, a person’s thoughts----or at least the thoughts they type-----are what really count. So even the shyest person can become a chat room star. Usually, this “faceless” communication doesn’t create problems.Identity doesn’t really matter when you’re in a chat room discussing politics or hobbies. In fact, this emphasis on the ideas themselves makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversation.Where else can so many people come together to chat? But some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. They’re looking for serious love relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find love? That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed.Others fail miserably. Supporters of online relationships state that the Internet allows couples to get to know each other intellectually first.Personal appearance doesn’t get in the way.But critics of online relationships argue that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace. Why? Because the Internet gives users a lot of control over how others view them.Internet users can carefully craft their words to fit whatever image they want to give. And they don’t have to worry about what their “nonverbal” communication is doing for their image. In a sense, they’re not really themselves. All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in cyberspace. But not knowing a person is a big problem in a love relationship. With so many unknowns, it’s easy to let one’s imagination “fill in the blanks.” This inevitably leads to disappointment when couples meet in person. How someone imagines an online friend is often quite more different than the real person. So, before looking for love in cyberspace, remember the advice of Internet pioneer Clifford Stoll: “Life in the real world is far richer than anything you’ll find on a computer screen.” 52.According to the passage, chatting in the cyberspace . A.stresses more about people’s identity B.needs people to be rich in knowledge C.puts emphasis on people’s thoughts D.allows people to discuss politics secretly .People who are against online dating think . A.what is said online is under control of the Internet B.one may not show the real self in cyberspace C.the faceless communication is conservative D.it is hard to protect the other’s identity .By saying “With so many unknowns, it’s easy to let one’s imagination ‘fill in the blanks’”, the writer means that . A.people may be disappointed when they meet in person B.the Internet makes it easy for people to imagine how others view them C.the Internet allows people to get more information about their loved ones D.people usually get to know each other by chance through the Internet .We can infer from the last paragraph that Clifford . A.demands to develop the computer system B.believes it hopeless to find love online C.encourages people to enjoy modern life D.supports to look for love in the real life E Hans was an honest fellow with a funny round good-humored face. Living alone, every day he worked in his garden. In all the countryside there was no garden so lovely as his. All sorts of flowers grew there, blooming in their proper order as the months went by, one flower taking another flower’s place, so that there were always beautiful things to see, and pleasant odors to smell. Hans had many friends, the most devoted being the Miller. So devoted was the rich Miller to Hansthat he’d never go by his garden without plucking a large bunch of flowers or a handful of sweet herbs, or filling his pockets with fruits. The Miller used to talk about noble ideas, and Hans nodded and smiled, feeling proud of having such a friend. The neighbors thought it strange that the rich Miller never gave Hans anything in return, though he had hundreds of sacks of flour, many cows and sheep, but Hans never troubled his head about these, and nothing gave him greater pleasure than to listen to all the wonderful things about the unselfishness of true friendship. In spring, summer, and autumn Hans was very happy, but when winter came, and he had no fruit or flowers to sell, he suffered from cold and hunger. Though extremely lonely, the Miller never came to see him then. “There’s no good in going to see Hans while the snow lasts.” The Miller said to his wife, “When people are in trouble they shouldn’t be bothered. So I’ll wait till the spring comes when he’s happy to give me flowers.” “You’re certainly very thoughtful,” answered his wife, “It’s quite a treat to hear you talk about friendship.” “Couldn’t we ask Hans up here?” said their son. “I’ll give him half my meal, and show him my white rabbits.” “How silly you are!” cried the Miller. “I really don’t know what’s the use of sending you to school. If Hans came up here, and saw our warm fire, our good supper, and our red wine, he might get envious, and envy is a most terrible thing, and would spoil anybody’s nature. I am his best friend, and I’ll always watch over him, and see that he’s not led into any temptation. Besides, if Hans came here, he might ask me for some flour. Flour is one thing, and friendship is another, and they shouldn’t be confused. The words are spelt differently, and mean quite different things. Everybody can see that.” He looked seriously at his son, who felt so ashamed that he hung his head down, and grew quite scared, and began to cry into his tears. Spring coming, the Miller went down to see Hans. Again he talked about friendship. “Hans, friendship never forgets. I’m afraid you don’t understand the poetry of life. See, how lovely your roses are!” Hans said he wanted to sell them in the market to buy back his things which were sold during thehard time of the winter. “I’ll give you many good things. I think being generous is the base of friendship.” said the Miller. “And now, as I’ll give you many good things, I’m sure you’d like to give me some flowers in return. Here’s the basket, and fill it quite full.” Poor Hans was afraid to say anything. He ran and plucked all his pretty roses, and filled the Miller’s basket, imagining the many good things promised by the Miller. The next day he heard the Miller calling: “Hans, would you mind carrying this sack of flour for me to market?” “I’m sorry, but I am really very busy today.” “Well,” said the Miller, “considering that I’m going to give you my things, it’s rather unfriendly of you to refuse. Upon my word, you mustn’t mind my speaking quite plainly to you.” Poor Hans was driven by his friendship theory to work hard for his best friend, leaving his garden dry and wasted. One evening Hans was sitting by fire when the Miller came. “Hans,” cried the Miller, “My little boy has fallen off a ladder and hurt himself, and I’m going for the Doctor. But he lives so far away, and it’s such a bad windy night. It has just occurred to me that you can go instead of me. You know I’m going to give you my good things, so you should do something for me in return.” “Certainly,” cried Hans. He struggled into the stormy night, and got the doctor to ride a horse to the Miller’s house in time to save the boy. However, Hans got lost in the darkness, and wandered off into a deep pool, drowned. At Hans’ funeral, the Miller said, “I was his best friend. I should walk at the head of the procession.” Every now and then he wiped his eyes with a handkerchief. 56. From the passage, we can learn that Hans ___________.A. was extremely wise and nobleB. was highly valued by the MillerC. admired the Miller very muchD. had a strong desire for fortune 57. “Flour is one thing, and friendship is another” can be understood as ___________. A. “Different words may mean quite different things.” B. “Interest is permanent while friendship is flexible.” C. “I’m afraid you don’t understand the poetry of life.” D. “I think being generous is the base of friendship.” 58. From the Miller’s talk at home, we can see he was ___________.A. serious but kindB. helpful and generousC. caring but strictD. selfish and cold-hearted 59. What’s the main cause of Hans’ tragedy?A. True friendship between them.B. A lack of formal education.C. A sudden change of weather.D. Blind devotion to a friend. 60. The author described the Miller’s behavior in order to ___________. A. entertain the readers with an incredible joking tale B. show the friendship between Hans and the Miller C. warn the readers about the danger of a false friend D. persuade people to be as intelligent as the Miller

Everything here is interesting to me. The first thing that impressed me greatly is that there are so many cars running in the streets, and many of them are very expensive ones. And there are so many big department stores or supermarkets in the city where you can get almost everything you want. So life here is very convenient. The streets are wide and clean with green trees on both sides, just like those where I live in America. I think it is a good place for living.I find people here are all living a rich and happy life. They wear trendy clothes and behave ina polite way. Many of them live in big and new houses. My cousin Wang Ping introduced some of his friends to me and we also went to see some of our relatives. They are all very kind to me.Besides, we visited the school where Wang Ping is studying. It is said that it is the best school in the city. I find it is not only big and beautiful but also has excellent equipment, like computers in the classrooms. What ’s more, I hear students here receive education for free. What an amazing place it is! I think I have fallen in love with it, and the people here, too. I have got a plan in my mind now — coming to stay in Hangzhou and study here in the next few years. Of course, I have to ask for my parents ’permission first. I ’m sure my parents will support me.新世纪教育网-- 中国最大型、最专业的中小学教育资源门户网站-----版权全部@新世纪教育网。
