It found that human-influenced climate change was raising the global death rates from illnesses including malnutrition(营养不良) and heat-related health problems. But even before its release, the report drew criticism from some experts on climate and risk, who questioned its methods and conclusions. Along with the deaths, the report saidthat the lives of 325 million people, primarily in poor countries, were being seriously affected by climate change. It projected that the number would double by 2030.Roger Pielke Jr., a politicalscientist at the Universityof Colorado, Boulder, who studies disaster trends, said the Forum’s report was “a methodological embarrassment” because there was no way todistinguish deathsor economic losses related to human-driven global warming amid the much larger losses resulting from the growth in populations and economic development in vulnerable(易受伤害的) regions. Dr. Pielke said that “climate change is an important problem requiring our utmost attention.” But the report, he said, “will harm the cause for action on both climate change and disasters because it is so deeply flawed(有瑕疵的).”However, Soren Andreasen, a social scientist at Dalberg Global Development Partners who supervised the writing of the report, defended it, saying that it was clear that the numbers were rough estimates. He said the report was aimed at world leaders, who will meet in Copenhagen in December tonegotiate a new international climate treaty. In a press release describing the report,Mr. Annan stressed the need for the negotiations to focus on increasing the flow of money fromrich to poor regions to help reduce their vulnerability to climate hazards while still curbing the emissions of the heat-trapping gases. More than 90% of the human and economic losses from climate change are occurring in poor countries, according to the report.56. What is the finding of the Global Humanitarian Forum?A) Rates of death from illnesses have risen due to global warming.B) Global temperatures affect the rate of economic development.C) Malnutrition has caused serious health problems in poor countries.D) Economic trends have to do withpopulation and natural disasters.57. What do we learn about the Forum’s report from the passage?A) It caused a big stir in developing countries.B) It was warmly received by environmentalists.C) It aroused a lot of interest in the scientific circles.D) It was challenged by someclimate and risk experts.58. What does Dr. Pielke say about the Forum’s report?A) Its statistics look embarrassing.B) It deserves our closest attention.C) It is invalid in terms of methodology.D) Its conclusion is purposely exaggerated.59. What is Soren Andreasen’s view of the report?A) Its conclusions are based on carefully collected data.B) It is vulnerable to criticism if the statistics are closely examined.C) It will give rise to heated discussions at the Copenhagen conference.D) Its rough estimates are meant to draw the attention of world leaders.60. What does Kofi Annan say should be the focus of the Copenhagen conference?A) How human and economic losses fromclimate change can be reduced.B) How rich countries can better helppoor regions reduce climate hazards.C) How emissions of heat-trapping gases can be reduced on a global scale.D) How rich and poor regionscan share responsibility in curbing global warming.Passage TwoQuestions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage. It’s an annual argument. Do we or do we not go on holiday? My partner says no because the boiler could go, or the roof fall off, and we have no savings to save us. I say you only live once and we work hard and what’s the point if you can’t go on holiday. The joy of a recession means no argument next year –we just won’t go.Since money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its knees, we should be grateful. For many families the recession means more than not booking a holiday. A YouGov poll of 2,000 people found 22% said they were arguing more with the ir partners because of concerns about money. What’s less clear is whether divorce and separation rates rise in a recession – financial pressures mean couples argue more but make splitting up less affordable. A recent research shows arguments about money were especiallydamaging to couples. Disputes werecharacterised by intense verbal(言语上的) aggression, tended to be repeated and not resolved, and made men, more than women, extremely angry.Kim Stephenson, an occupational psychologist, believes money is such a big deal because of what it symbolises, which may be different things to men and women. “People can say the same things about money but have different ideas of what it’s for,” he explains. “They’ll say it’s to save, tospend, for security, for freedom, to show someone you love them.” He says men are more likely to see money as a way of buying status and of showing their parents that they’ve achieved something.“The biggest problem is that couples assume each other knows what’s going on with their finances, but they don’t.There seems to be more of a taboo(禁忌) about talking about money than about death. But you both need to know what you’re doing, who’s paying what into the joint accountand how much you keep separately. In a healthy relationship, you don’t ha ve to agree about money, but you have to talk about it.”61. What does the author say about vacationing?A) People enjoy it all the more during a recession.B) Few people can afford it without working hard.C) It is the chief cause of family disputes.D) It makes all the hard work worthwhile.62. What does the author mean by saying “money is known ... to bring a relationshipto its knees” (Lines 1-2, Para. 2)?A) Money is considered to be the root of all evils.B) Disputes over money may ruin a relationship.C) Few people can resist the temptation of money.D) Some people sacrifice their dignity for money.63. The YouGov poll of 2,000 people indicates that in a recession ________.A) couples show more concern for each otherB) it is more expensive for couples to split upC) conflicts between couples tend to riseD) divorce and separation rates increase64. What does Kim Stephenson believe?A) Men and women view money in different ways.B) Money is often a symbol of a person’s status.C) Men and women spend money on different things.D) Money means a great deal to both men and women.65. The author suggests at the end of the passage that couples should ________.A) put their money together instead of keeping it separatelyB) discuss money matters to maintain a healthy relationshipC) make efforts to reach agreement on their family budgetsD) avoid arguing about money matters to remain romanticWrite an English composition in about 80 words according to the instructions given below in Chinese.如今在大街小巷,我们经常会看到人们牵着小狗在溜达,你觉得在像上海这样的大城市里养宠物狗应该吗?请说说你的理由。

Identify the paragraph from which the information is derived. You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter. Answer the questions bymarking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2.Caring for elderly parents catches many unprepared[A ] Last July, Julie Baldocchi,s mother had a massive stroke and was paralyzed. Baldocchi suddenly had to become a family caregiver, something that she wasn"t prepared for. “I was flying by the seat of my pants,” says Baldocchi, an employment specialist in San Francisco. Both of her parents are 83, and she knew her father couldn’t handle her mother’s care. The hospital recommended putting her mother in a nursing home. Baldocchi wasn’t willing to do that. But moving her back into her parents’ home created other problems. Baldocchi, 48, is married and lives about a mile away from her parents. She has a full-time job and has back problems that make it difficult for her to lift her mother. “I couldn’t do it all,” she says. “But I didn’t even know how to find help.”[B] With help from the Family Caregiver Alliance, she eventually hired a live-in caregiver. “But even if you plan intellectually and legally, you’re never ready for the emotional impact,” Baldocchi says. In the first two months after her mother’s stroke, she lost about 30 pounds as stress mounted. More than 42 million Americans provide family caregiving for an adult who needs help with daily activities, according to a 2009 survey by the AARP. An additional 61.6 million provided at least some care during the year. And many are unprepared.[C] While many parents lack an advance care directive, it’s the most basic and important step they can take. The directive includes several parts, including: a durablepower of attorney, which gives someone legal authority to make financial decisions on another’s behalf; a health care proxy, which is similar to the power of attorney, except it allows someone to make decisions regarding medical treatment; and a living will that outlines instructions for end-of-life care. (For example, parents can say if they want to be kept alive by artificial measures.) “It’s invaluable for the kids, because it’s hard to make those decisions for a parent,” says Jennifer Cona, an elder- law attorney at Genser Dubow Genser & Cona in Melville, N.Y. An advance care directive is the first line of defense if a situation arises, says Kathleen Kelly, executive director of the Family Caregiver Alliance, which supports and educates caregivers. Without an advance directive, the family will have to petition the court to be appointed th e parent’s legal guardian, says .[D] It’s important for families to talk about long-term care so the adult children know their parents, preferences, wishes and goals, says Lynn Feinberg, a caregiving expert at AARP. But it’s not an easy conversation. Elderly parents are sometimes suspici ous of their children’s financial motives, says Susan John, a financial planner at Financial Focus in Wolfeboro, N.H. One client asked John to hold a family meeting because they needed an intermediary to talk about financial issues, she says. And when there are many siblings, the family decisions can become a three-ring circus with much acrimony, says Ann-Margaret Carrozza, an elder-law attorney in Glen Cove, N.Y. Families who need information and help sorting out disagreements can call on elder-law attorneys, financial planners, geriatric care managers and caregiver support groups. In February, AARP said it will offer its members a new caregiving support service through financial services firm Genworth.[E] Many families are unprepared for quick decisions, especially when they find out that Medicare doesn’t pay for long-term care, Feinberg says. The median cost of a year in a private room at a nursing home in 2011 was $77,745, according to Genworth. And only those who have spent most of their assets can qualify for Medicaid to pay for the nursing home.[ F] Assisted living is another option. Residents can have their own apartment to maintain some independence. But the facilities generally provide personal care services, such as meals, housekeeping and assistance with activities. Still, it’s not cheap: The national median cost in 2011 was $39,135, according to Genworth. Assisted living isn’t covered by Medicaid.[G ] If they have a choice, at least 90% of elderly parents prefer to stay at home as long as they can, according toAARP research. But if the parents can no longer safely live at home, it can be hard for children to move them into an adult care facility. There may be another option. Sometimes the home can be modified so a parent can stay there. For example, Baldocchi put in a chair lift for her mother. She also arranged for a home caregiver.[H] Family caregivers take over many responsibilities. One might manage a parent’s finances, while another sibling will take the parent to doctors" appointments and shopping. Those who move in with a parent take on a significant and sustained burden of c are. Jan Walker moved into her mother’s home in Leesburg, Fla. After her mother, who is 83, had fallen, she wasn’t able to get around as well. Walker, 55, has three brothers. But she is the only daughter, is divorced and has no children. “I always knew tha t this was the role that I would have, and I guess my mind was prepared for it,” says Walker, who now is a full-time caregiver and works from home as a tutorial instructor for a digital scrapbooking website. “When you get into the trenches, it’s literally baptism by fire,” she says. “New things come up. It’s not just about advance planning for finances or medical care. It’s everything,” she says.[I ] Caregivers need to also watch their own health. “There is such a thing as caregiver burnout, ” Cona says. Among female caregivers 50 and older, 20% reported symptoms of depression, according to a 2010 study on working caregivers by MetLife. “It’s a hard job,” Walker says. “But most worthwhile things are hard. She was always there for me when I needed a helpin g hand. It’s only natural that I be here for her now.”46. When elderly parents cannot live at home safely, their children can change their home instead of sending them to an adult care facility.47. To talk about long-term care is not easy because sometimes aged parents are suspicious of their children’s financial motives.48. Besides advance planning for finances or medical care, family caregivers take over many other responsibilities.49. The difference between a durable power of attorney and a health care proxy is that the latter allows someone to make decisions regarding medical treatment.50. Baldocchi did not want to send her mother to a nursing home, but she had difficulty taking care of her.51. Over 42 million caregivers helped an adult with everyday activities in the USA in 2009.52. If a family needs information or help to sort out disagreements, there are many people they can call on.53. Caregivers should pay attention to their own health, or they may burn out or become depressed.54. One will have to petition the court to be the p arent’s legal guardian, if there is no advance directive.55. The national median cost of assisted living in 2011 was $39,135 and it is not covered by Medicaid.Section B46. [G]。

Please give a brief description of the chart first and then make comments on it. You should write at(分数:2.00)__________________________________________________________________________________________ 正确答案:(正确答案: Education Fever From the graph above, we can easily observe that family spending on education in China has a steady increase in the past decade, with the number reaching 983 billion in 2013, which nearly triples the number in 2004. Many factors contribute to the ever-increasing education spending, "letting children win at the starting line" being one of them. Many parents spend a lot of money on pre-school education. They try to send kids to the best kindergartens whose tuition fees are much higher than that of universities. Choosing better primary and middle schools also takes money. Normally, students must attend schools within the district where they live. However, many parents prefer to send their children to a better-known school in other districts regardless of the large sum of "donations". Apart from formal education, parents also pay their children for various after-school programs, from common painting or dancing classes to expensive overseas summer camps. There is nothing wrong with parents' passion for education, but parents should keep in mind that spending more money doesn't necessarily guarantee a better education for children. Money should be put where it matters most.)解析:解析:这篇图表型作文要求考生结合图表就“教育热”展开论述。

2013年12月英语四级真题答案及解析完整版
作文部分:范文一: The modern technology has greatly altered the mode of communication among people. With the help of the Internet, people can easily contact each other anytime anywhere. However, the side effect is that many people have become over-dependent on the Internet and neglected face-to-face communication. As far as I'm concerned, electronic communication cannot fully replace the direct contact among people. Although it seems to bring everyone together, it actually estranges people and decreases the effectiveness of communication. A typical example is that, traditionally, people working in the same office simply walk to others and talk. Today, however, co-workers tend to send e-mails or instant messages through the Internet even when they are sitting next to each other. As words can never convey the full message, it usually takes much more time and rounds of conversation than face-to-face communication, in which people can discuss more directly with less loss of information. To conclude, the Internet enables more effective communication in some situations, but over-dependence on it actually pulls people apart.范文二:It is frequently observed that many people keep looking down at their mobile phones whatever they are doing. It is true that mobile phones have brought great convenience to us as we can send short messages, check e-mails, surf the Internet, or watch videos almost anywhere. However, the overuse of mobile phones also leads to some serious problems. The over-dependence on mobile phones can harm the relationship among friends and family. With mobile phones, people do not talk as much as before. For example, sometimes at dinner tables, instead of chatting and laughing with each other, many people choose to chat with other friends online. In other words, mobile phones help people contacting friends far away more easily at the expense of reducing the communication with those who are sitting right next to them.In conclusion, mobile phone can be a useful tool in modern life, but overusing it damages interpersonal relationship. There is no point to lose our intimacy with friends and family to modern technology.范文三:The impact of the Internet on learningExplain why education doesn’t simply mean learning to obtain informationIn the age of knowledge explosion, the Internet opens a magical portal for leaners to get access to seemingly incessant information. But is information equal to knowledge? “Once I learn how to use google, isn't that all the education I really need?” This question fully embodies the prejudiced opinion that as long as people acquire abundant information, they will get proper education. The rea son why education doesn’t simply mean learning to obtain information is that education is not limited to the hard facts or theories students can learn from their textbooks or the Internet. It relates to a wider scope ranging from the obtainment of practical skills to the development of characters, which are hard for students to learn simply by googling. Consequently, comprehensive learning in schools that includes learning knowledge, conducting experiments and communicating with peers is what true education is.In a word, the Internet does provide valuable information for learners, but people should be fully conscious of the essence of education and learn to tell the right from the wrong.听力部分:1. TranslationPart I Writing1.For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay commenting on the statement “We can learn more from people at a higher level than us (like teachers) than from people who are at the same level as us.” Do you agree or disagree? You can cite examples to illustrate your viewpoint. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.正确答案:Learn from the Wise It is said that we can learn from people at a higher level than us, for example teachers, than those who are at the same level as us.I strongly believe that there is a point in such a statement. First, people at a higher level here do not refer to those of mere greater age, seniority or social status. It is the maturity of the soul that measures which kind of people we can learn from and rest upon. Take the story between Aristotle and Alexander the Great as an example. Overbearing as he was as a king, Alexander respected Aristotle, a pagan from another polis, as his teacher. By repeatedly seeking advice from Aristotle, he expanded the presence of his military forces even towards the Asian and African continents. It is the mental support from his teacher that realized his ambition. No one in the world can be perfect. And that is why we should learn from others, especially from those who are wiser, more insightful and more intelligent. Learning from them can make us better improve ourselves.解析:此类题型属于典型的观点论述题。

2013年英语四级完整版答案作文部分: 范文一: The modern technology has greatly altered the mode of communication among p eople. With the help of the Internet, people can easily contact each other anytime any where. However, the side effect is that many people have become over-dependent on t he Internet and neglected face-to-face communication. As far as I'm concerned, electronic communication cannot fully replace the direct contact among people. Although it seems to bring everyone together, it actually estra nges people and decreases the effectiveness of communication. A typical example is t hat, traditionally, people working in the same office simply walk to others and talk. To day, however, co-workers tend to send e-mails or instant messages through the Internet even when they are sitting next to each other. As words can never convey the full me ssage, it usually takes much more time and rounds of conversation than face-to-face c ommunication, in which people can discuss more directly with less loss of informatio n. To conclude, the Internet enables more effective communication in some situatio ns, but over-dependence on it actually pulls people apart. 范文二: It is frequently observed that many people keep looking down at their mobile ph ones whatever they are doing. It is true that mobile phones have brought great conveni ence to us as we can send short messages, check e-mails, surf the Internet, or watch vi deos almost anywhere. However, the overuse of mobile phones also leads to some seri ous problems. The over-dependence on mobile phones can harm the relationship among friends and family. With mobile phones, people do not talk as much as before. For example, s ometimes at dinner tables, instead of chatting and laughing with each other, many peo ple choose to chat with other friends online. In other words, mobile phones help peopl e contacting friends far away more easily at theexpense of reducing the communication with those who are sitting right next to them. In conclusion, mobile phone can be a useful tool in modern life, but overusing it damages interpersonal relationship. There is no point to lose our intimacy with friends and family to modern technology. 范文三: The impact of the Internet on learning Explain why education doesn ’t simply mean learning to obtain information In the age of knowledge explosion, the Internet opens a magical portal for leaner s to get access to seemingly incessant information. Write your essay on Answer Sheet 1.1.近年来越来越多的公共场所禁烟2.这项举措在受到拥护的同时也引发了争议3.我的看法Should Smoking Be Banned in Public Places?正确答案:Should Smoking Be Banned in Public Places? In recent years, smoking has been banned in many public places such as shops, restaurants, and even bus stops. This regulation has triggered much dispute. On the one hand, many welcome the ban since lots of illnesses and deaths are smoking-related, and this is a very sensible step to improve people’s health and living condition. On the other hand, however, smokers consider it is unfair to ban smoking. It is their right to smoke, and they are not committing any crime, so the government should not ban that. In my view, to ban smoking is a long term process, during which education rather than enforcement is more likely to be the key to the success. Banning smoking in the public areas is a policy that should be implemented step by step.解析:这篇作文要求考生结合社会现象论述自己的观点。

You should start your essay with a brief description of the picture and then express your views on generation gap. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words.正确答案:Let’s Get to Know and Accept Each Other Generation gaps exist in various times. In the illustration, the boy says to his father that he will allow his father watching cartoons with him only when his father doesn’t ask him to explain the cartoons. The generation gaps seem to be pulled widely apart with the advancement of the times. Therefore, both the seniors and the juniors should take some measures to bridge the gaps. Parents should learn to keep their mind open to the new things around them. In this way, they will keep their ideas fresh, know what their children are experiencing and will have new topics to talk with their children. And patience and tolerance always smooth the communication between parents and children. As to children, they should learn to show their respect and understanding to their parents, for example, explaining the new things patiently to their parents. In conclusion, only by the efforts of both parents and children can we narrow the generation gaps. So let’s start to know and accept each other so that better communications can be promoted.Part II Listening ComprehensionSection A听力原文:W: Tom, you really must take school more seriously. 2013年12月英语四级改革新题型样题答案Tape Script of Listening Comprehension Section ADirections:In this section, you will hear 8 short conversations and 2 long conversations. At the end of each conversation, one or more questions will be asked about what was said. Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken only once. After each question there will be a pause. During the pause, you must read the four choices marked A), B), C) and D), and decide which is the best answer. Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1 with a single line through the centre.1. M: Finally I've got the chance to put on my new suit tonight. I hope to make a good impression on your family. W: Come on, it's only a family reunion. So jeans and T-shirts are just fine.Q: What does the woman mean?2. W: From here, the mountains look as if you could just reach out and touch them. M: That's why I chose this lodge. It has one of the best views in Switzerland.Q: What is the man's chief consideration in choosing the lodge?3. M: Miss, can I interest you in the pork special we're serving tonight? It's only $7.99, half the usual price, and it's very tasty.W: Oh, really? I'll try it.Q: What does the man say about the dish?4. W: This crazy bus schedule has got me completely confused. I can't figure out when my bus to Cleveland leaves. M: Why don't you just go to the ticket window and ask?Q: What does the man suggest the woman do?5. M: Shawn's been trying for months to find a job. But I wonder how he could get a job when he looks like that. W: Oh, that poor guy! He really should shave himself every other day at least and put on something clean.Q: What do we learn about Shawn?6. M: Why didn't you stop when we first signaled you at the crossroads? W: Sorry, I was just a bit absent-minded. Anyway, do I have to pay a fine? Q: What do we learn from the conversation?7. W: My hand still hurts from the fall on the ice yesterday. I wonder if I broke something.M: I'm no doctor, but it's not black and blue or anything. Maybe you just need to rest it for a few days.Q: What do we learn about the woman from the conversation?8. M: I really can't stand the way David controls the conversation all the time. If he's going to be at your Christmas party,I just won't come.W: I'm sorry you feel that way, but my mother insists that he come.Q: What does the woman imply?Conversation OneM: Hello, Professor Johnson.W: Hello, Tony. So what shall we work on today?M: Well, the problem is that this writing assignment isn't coming out right. What I thought I was writing on was to talk about what a particular sport means to me—one I participate in.W: What sport did you choose?M: I decided to write about cross-country skiing.W: What are you going to say about skiing?M: That's the problem. I thought I would write about how peaceful it is to be out in the country.W: So why is that a problem?M: As I start describing how quiet it is to be out in the woods, I keep mentioning how much effort it takes to keep going. Cross-country skiing isn't as easy as some people think. It takes a lot of energy. But that's not part of my paper, so I guess I should leave it out. But now I don't know how to explain that feeling of peacefulness without explaining how hard you have to work for it. It all fits together. It's not like just sitting down somewhere and watching the clouds roll by. That's different.W: Then you'll have to include that in your point. The peacefulness of cross-country skiing is the kind you earn by effort. Why leave that out? Part of your point you knew beforehand, but part you discovered as you wrote. That's common, right?M: Yeah, I guess so ...Questions 9 to 11 are based on the conversation you have just heard.9. What is the topic of the man's writing assignment?10. What problem does the man have while working on his paper? 11. What does the woman say is common in writing papers?Conversation TwoW: Good evening, and welcome to this week's "Business World," the program for and about businesspeople. Tonight we have Mr. Steven Kane who has just taken over an established bicycle shop. Tell us, Mr. Kane, what made you want to run your own store?M: Well, I've always loved racing bikes and fixing them. When I was working full-time as a salesman for a big company, I seldom had time to enjoy my hobby. I knew then that as soon as I had enough money to get my own business going, I'd do it. I had my heart set on it, and I didn't let anything stand in my way. When I wentdown to the bank and got a business loan, I knew I'd love being my own boss. Now my time is my own. I open the storewhen I want and leave when I want.W: You mean you don't keep regular hours?M: Well, the sign on my store says the hours are 10:00 to 6:00, but if business is slower than usual, I can just lock up and take off early.W: Have you hired any employees to work with you yet?M: Yeah, a couple of friends of mine who love biking as much as I do. They help me out a few days a week. It's great because ... we play cards or just sit around and talk when there're no customers.W: Thank you, Mr. Kane. We wish you success in your new business.Questions 12 to 15 are based on the conversation you have just heard.12. What is the woman doing?13. What did Mr. Kane do before he took over the bicycle shop? 14. Why did the man take over a bicycle shop?15. What do we learn about the people working in the shop?Section BDirections: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D). Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 1 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneI first met Joe Gans when we were both nine years old, which is probably the only reason he's one of my best friends. If I had first met Joe as a freshman in high school, we wouldn't even have had the chance to get to know each other. Joe is a day student, but I am a boarding student. We haven't been in the same classes, sports, or extracurricular activities.Nonetheless, I spend nearly every weekend at his house and we talk on the phone every night. This is not to say that we would not have been compatible if we had first met in our freshman year. Rather, we would not have been likely to spend enough time getting to know each other due to the lack of immediately visible mutual interests. In fact, to be honest, I struggle even now to think of things we have in common. But maybe that's what makes us enjoy each other's company so much. When I look at my friendship with Joe, I wonder how many people I've known whom I never disliked, but simply didn't take the time to get to know. Thanks to Joe, I have realized how little basis there is for the social divisions that exist in every community. Since this realization, I have begun to make an even more determined effort to find friends in unexpected people and places.Questions 16 to 18 are based on the passage you have just heard.16. Why does the speaker say Joe Gans became one of his best friends? 17. Where does the speaker spend most of his weekends?18. What has the speaker learned from his friendship with Joe?Passage TwoWhile Gail Opp-Kemp, an American artist, was giving a speech on the art of Japanese brush painting to an audience that included visitors from Japan, she was confused to see that many of her Japanese listeners had their eyes closed. Were they turned off because an American had the nerve to instruct Japanese in their own art form? Were they deliberately trying to signal their rejection of her?Opp-Kemp later found out that her listeners were not being disrespectful. Japanese listeners sometimes close their eyes to enhance concentration. Her listeners were showing their respect for her by chewing on her words.Someday you may be either a speaker or a listener in a situation involving people from other countries or members ofa minority group in North America. Learning how different cultures signal respect can help you avoid misunderstandings. Here are some examples:In the deaf culture of North America, many listeners show applause not by clapping their hands but by waving them in the air.In some cultures, both overseas and in some minority groups in North America, listeners are considered disrespectful if they look directly at the speaker. Respect is shown by looking in the general direction but avoiding direct eye contact. In some countries, whistling by listeners is a sign of approval, while in other countries, it is a form of insult. Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard.19. What did Opp-Kemp's speech focus on?20. Why do Japanese listeners sometimes close their eyes while listening to a speech? 21. What does the speaker try to explain?Passage ThreeOne of the greatest heartbreaks for firefighters occurs when they fail to rescue a child from a burning building because the child—frightened by smoke and noise—hides under a bed or in a closet and is later found dead.Saddest of all is when children catch a glimpse of the masked firefighter but hide because they think they have seen a monster. To prevent such tragedies, firefighter Eric Velez gives talks to children in his community, explaining that they should never hide during a fire. He displays firefighters' equipment, including the oxygen mask, which he encourages his listeners to play with and put on. "If you see us," Velez tells them, "don't hide. We are not monsters. We have come to rescue you."Velez gives his presentations in English and Spanish. Growing up in SanFrancisco, he learned Spanish from his immigrant parents.Velez—and other firefighters throughout North America who give similarpresentations—will never know how many lives they save through their talks, but it's a fact that informative speaking saves lives. For example, several months after listening to an informative speech, Pete Gentry in North Carolina rescued his brother, who was choking on food, by using the method taught by student speaker Julie Parris. In addition to saving lives, informative speakers help people learn new skills, solve problems, and acquire fascinating facts about the exciting world in which they live.Questions 22 to 25 are based on the passage you have just heard.22. Why do some children trapped in a burning building hide from masked firefighters? 23. What does the passage tell us about firefighter Eric Velez?24. What do we learn about Pete Gentry?25. What message is the speaker trying to convey?Section CDirections: In this section, you will hear a passage three times. When the passage is read for the first time, you should listen carefully for its general idea. When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks with the exact words you have just heard. Finally, when the passage is read for the third time, you should check what you have written.Almost every child, on the first day he sets foot in a school building, is smarter, more (26) curious, less afraid of what he doesn't know, better at finding and (27) figuring things out, more confident, resourceful (机敏的), persistent and (28) independent than he will ever be again in his schooling – or, unless he is very unusual and very lucky, for the rest of hislife. Already, by paying close attention to and (29) interacting with the world and people around him, and without any school-type formal instruction, he has done a task far more difficult, complicated and (30) abstract than anything he will be asked to do in school, or than any of his teachers has done for years. He has solved the (31) mystery of language. He has discovered it – babies don't even know that language exists – and he has found out how it works and learned to use it (32) appropriately. He has done it by exploring, by experimenting, by developing his own model of the grammar of language, by (33) trying it out and seeing whether it works, by gradually changing it and (34) refining it until it does work. And while he has been doing this, he has been learning other things as well, including many of the (35) "concepts" that the schools think only they can teach him, and many that are more complicated than the ones they do try to teach him.参考答案Part II Listening ComprehensionSection A1.
