Unit 3 WHO AM I?Over time I have been changed quite a lot.I began as a calculating machine in France in 1642.Although I was young I could simplify difficult sums.I developed very slowly and it took nearly two hundred years before I was built as an analytical machine by Charles Babbage. After I was programmed by an operator who used cards with holes, I could “think” logically and produce an answer quicker than any person. At that time it was considered a technological revolution and the start of my “artificial intelligence”.In 1936 my real father, Alan Turing, wrote a book about how I could be made to work as a “universal machine” to solve any d ifficult mathematical problem. From then on, I grew rapidly both in size and in brainpower.By the 1940s I had grown as large as a room, and I wondered if I would grow any larger. However, this reality also worried my designers. As time went by, I was made smaller.First as a PC(personal computer)and then as a laptop, I have been used in offices and homes since the 1970s.These changes only became possible as my memory improved.First it was stored in tubes, then on transistors and later on very small chips. As a result I totally changed my shape. As I have grown older I have also grown smaller.Over time my memory has developed so much that, like an elephant, I never forget anything I have been told! And my memory became so large that even I couldn’t believe it!But I was always so lonely standing there by myself, until in the early 1960s they gave me a family connected by a network.I was able to share my knowledge with others throughthe World Wide Web.Since the 1970s many new applications have been found for me.I have become very important in communication, finance and trade.I have also been put into robots and used to make mobile phones as well as help with medical operations.I have even been put into space rockets and sent to explore the Moon and Mars.Anyhow, my goal is to provide humans with a life of high quality.I am now truly filled with happiness that I am a devoted friend and helper of the human race!ANDY-THE ANDROIDI’m part of an android football team.About once a year we are allowed to get together to play a game of football.I’m as big as a human. In fact, I look like one too.On the football team I’m a striker so I have to be able to run very fast.My computer chips help me to move and think like a human. For example, I have learned to signal to my teammates in computer language to give me the ball when I am open and have a good shot for a goal.My first football competition was in Nagoya, Japan several years st year our team went to Seattle, Washington in the USA.We won second place.Personally,I think the team that won first place cheated. They had developeda new type of program just before the competition. So we need to encourage our programmer to improve our intelligence too.We are determined to create an even better system. In a way our programmer is like our coach. She programs us with all the possible moves she has seen while watching human games. Then she prepares reliable moves to use if a new situation arises. In this way I can make up new moves using my “artificial intelligence”.I would really like to pla y against a human team, for I have been programmed to act just like them. After all, with the help of my electronic brain which never forgets anything, using my intelligence is what I’m all about! Important words and expressionscalculator, notebook, common, calculate, analytical, technological, revolution, universal, mathematical, simple, simple-minded, artificial intelligence, anyway, totally, network, truly b.Sentences1)My real father was Alan Turing, who in 1936 wrote a book to describe how computers could be made to work, and built a “universal machine” to solve any mathematical problem.P18 2)As the years have gone by, I have been made smaller and smaller.P183)I became small and thin but I got cleverer and cleverer, quicker and quicker.P18 4)And my memory became so large that I couldn't believe it!P18 2.Ability goalsEnable the students to grasp the progress of computers.3.Learning ability goalsEnable the students to state the progress in chronology order.Teaching important pointsTry to finish the exercises of Comprehending.Teaching difficult pointsEnable the students to learn how to grasp the structure of the text.Teaching methodsa.Listening method.b.Skimming method.c.Task-based method.Teaching aidsA recorder and a computer.Teaching procedures & waysStep I Revision1.Greetings.2.Ask students the spelling and meaning of some important words and phrases in the text.Step II Pre-reading T: Boys and girls, from the last lessons Speaking and Listening, we have learnt something about computers. Now, please look at the screen and discuss these questions with your partner. Then I'll ask some students to report your work. Are you clear? Imagine having the opportunity to sing together with hundreds of other people while you are at home alone. You can do this in a virtual choir. Virtual choir members record themselves while they perform alone on video. These videos are uploaded onto the Internet, and then they are put together into one video that you can see online—a virtual choir. Anyone can take part in a virtual choir from anywhere—all you need is a video camera and an Internet connection. You do not even need a studio. A virtual choir helps connect ordinary people together. Many people do not have close friends or contacts who have the same interest in music. Many others do not have the chance to join a local choir. A virtual choir enables them to add their voices to those of other individuals and become part of the global community. It has proved to be a positive influence on the lives of many people. As one virtual choir member said, “Music helps me to...forget my problems. With music, I become someone else.”

There comes a time when the old must give way to the new, and it is not possible to preserve everything from our past as we move towards the future. Finding and keepi ng the right balance between progress and the protection of cultural sites can be a big challenge.

Big challenges, however, can sometimes lead to great solutions. In the 1950s, the Egyptian government wanted to build a new dam across the Nile in order to control floods, produce electricity, and supply water to more farmers in the area. But the proposal led to protests. Water from the dam would likely damage a number of temples and destroy cultural relics that were an important part of Egypt’s cultural heritage. After listening to the scientists who had studied the problem, and citizens who lived near the dam, the government turned to the United Nations for help in 1959.

I won't tell anybody!" A man's angry voice answered, "You're lying You said that last time We're going to kill you" When he heard these words, Jim panicked and ran to the raft But although I was frightened, I also felt very curious, so I put my head round the door It was quite dark, but I could see a man lying on the floor, tied up with rope There were two men standing over him One was short, with a beard The other was tall and had something in his hand that looked like a gun 'I've had enough of you I'm going to shoot you now," this man said He was obviously the one who had threatened the man on the floor And it was a gun he had in his hand "No, don't do that," said the short man "Let's leave him here The steamboat will sink in a couple of hours and he'll go down with it" When he heard that, the frightened man on the floor started crying "He sounds as if he's going to die of fright!" I thought "I have to find a way to save him!" I crawled along the deck, found Jim, and told him what I had heard "We must find their boat and take it away, then they'll have to stay here," I said Jim looked terrified "I'm not staying here," he said But I persuaded him to help me, and we found the men's boat tied to the other side of the steamboat We climbed quietly in and as we paddled away we heard the two men shouting By then we were a safe distance away But now I began to feel bad about what we had done I didn't want all three men to die The Life of Mark Twain Often the lives of writers resemble the lives fo the characters they create Mark Twain, who wrote The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, was no exception To start with, the author’s name, Mark Twain, is itself an invention, or “pen name”Twain’s real name was Samuel Clemens“Mark Twain”, which means “watermark two”, was a call used by sailors on the Mississippi to warn shipmates that they were coming into shallow water Like Huck, Mark Twain led an adventurous life He left school early, and as an adolescent, determined to make his fortune in South America, set off from his home in Hannibal, Missouri, for New Orleans He wanted to take a boat to the Amazon, where he thought he could get rich quickly He arrived in New Orleans without a penny in his pocket only to find that there were no boats for South America Forced to change his plans, he worked for several years as a pilot on a steamboat, taking passengers up and down the Mississippi, the great river which flows from the north of the US near the Canadian border, down to the Gulf of Mexico Later he became a journalist and began writing stories about life on the river Twain’s vivid and often amusing descriptions of life on the river quickly became popular, and established the repu tation he still enjoys today as one of America’s greatest writers\。

Unit 3 WHO AM I?Over time I have been changed quite a lot. I began as a calculating machine in France in 1642. Although I was young I could simplify difficult sums. I developed very slowly and it took nearlytwo hundred years before I was built as an analytical machine by Charles Babbage. After I was programmed by an operator who used cards with holes, I could “think” logically and produce an answer quicker than any person. At that time it was considered a technological revolution and the start of my “artificial intelligence”. In 1936 my real father, Alan Turing, wrote a book about how I could be made to work as a “universal machine”to solve any difficult mathematical problem. From then on, I grew rapidly both in size and in brainpower. By the 1940s I had grown as large asa room, and I wondered if I would grow any larger. However, this reality also worried my designers. As time went by, I was made smaller. First as a PC(personal computer) and then as a laptop, I have been used in offices and homes since the 1970s.These changes only became possible as my memory improved. First it was stored in tubes, then on transistors and later on very small chips. As a result I totally changed my shape. As I have grown older I have also grown smaller. Over time my memory has developed so much that, like an elephant, I never forget anything I have been told! And my memory became so large that even I couldn’t believe it! But I was always so lonely standing there by myself, until in the early 1960sthey gave me a family connected by a network. I was able to share my knowledge with others through the World Wide Web.Since the 1970s many new applications have been found for me. I have become very importantin communication, finance and trade. I have also been put into robots and used to make mobile phones as well as help with medical operations. I have even been put into space rockets and sentto explore the Moon and Mars. Anyhow, my goal is to provide humans with a life of high quality. Iam now truly filled with happiness that I am a devoted friend and helper of the human race!ANDY-THE ANDROIDI’m part of an android football team. About once a year we are allowed to get together to play a game of football. I’m as big as a human. In fact, I look like one too. On the football team I’m a striker so I have to be able to run very fast. My computer chips help me to move and think like a human. For example, I have learned to signal to my teammates in computer language to give methe ball when I am open and have a good shot for a goal.My first football competition was in Nagoya, Japan several years ago. Last year our team wentto Seattle, Washington in the USA. We won second place. Personally, I think the team that wonfirst place cheated. They had developed a new type of program just before the competition. So we need to encourage our programmer to improve our intelligence too. We are determined to create an even better system. In a way our programmer is like our coach. She programs us with all the possible moves she has seen while watching human games. Then she prepares reliable moves to use if a new situation arises. In this way I can make up new moves using my “artificial intelligence”. I would really like to play against a human team, for I have been programmed to act just like them. After all, with the help of my electronic brain which never forgets anything, usingmy intelligence is what I’m all about!。

Unit 3 THE INTERNETSTRONGER TOGETHER: HOW WE HAVE BEEN CHANGED BY THE INTERNETMuch has been written about the wonders of the World Wide Web. There are countless articles telling us how the Internet has made our life more convenient. We no longer have to wait in line or carry cash around when we go shopping. We can get the most updated information from large databases. We can download software, documents, and images whenever we need them. But the Internet has done much more for people than simply make life more convenient. People’s lives have been changed by online communities and social networks.Jan Tchamani, an English teacher in Birmingham, UK, suddenlydeveloped a serious illness and had to quit her job. At age 50. she found herself out of work and stuck at home with only her computer to keep her company. After a while, she discovered that surfing the Internet could help her feel less lonely and bored. She could listen to music, watch films, play games, and explore the world. She also joined an online group where she could talk about her problems and get support and advice from others. She realised that one of the greatest benefits of the Internet was its ability to remove the distance that actually exists between people. She was so inspired by the people she met online that she decided to start an IT club to teacher older people how to use computers and the Internet. She and her friends now organise events and collect money for private teachers. Many people have been helped by the club. A 59-year-old man learnt how to apply for work online and found a great job. Now that he works and can take care of himself, his daughter has time to study atuniversity. A 61-year-old woman who was living alone has started a small online company together with two friends. She no longer feels lonely, and her company has become quite successful.Jan has started taking online classes to learn more about how to use the Internet to make society better. She believes that it is highly important to bridge the digital divide and make sure that everyone has access to the Internet and knows how to use technology. Her next goal is to start a charity website to raise money for children in poor countries.Jan’s life has been greatly improved by the Internet. “when you go through tough times, you meet others who are facing similar challenges.” Jan says. “Thinking about other people’s situation inspired me to offer help.”Reading and writingToday I thought I’d blog about a question that has been asked many times-how do you stay safe online and avoid bad experiences on the Internet? I’m not an expert, but many years as a blogger have taught me a thing or two.First of all, there’s the golden rule of the Internet: if you see orread something that makes you feel uncomfortable, leave the site immediately. Don’t post comments or click on anything. Second, protect you privacy. Don’t give out your address or phone number. Someone might use the information to steal your identity. Identity theft is a common and serious problem. Third, be polite. Being online is no excuse for being rude, and you don’t want to become a target for a troll or cyberbully. A troll is a person who posts comments or questions in order to stir up trouble online. Trolls often use several false names so that they can stay on a site. A cyberbully uses the Internet to be mean to others. Like a troll, a cyberbully will also write something mean but it is usually directed at particular people. He or she may also post embarrassing photos and information about these people. However, the more polite you are, the less likely it is you will be attacked.Have you had any bad experiences online, or do you have some good advice for staying safe? Post your comments below!。

1Unit 3 of our high school English textbook is super fun! We are learning all about the power of nature and how it can impact our lives. The unit is full of interesting facts and stories that have been really eye-opening for all of us.One of the things we learned about is natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. It's so cool (and kind of scary) to think about how powerful these forces of nature are and how they can cause so much destruction. We also learned about how scientists study these phenomena and try to predict when they might happen.Another topic we covered is climate change and how it is affecting the environment. We talked about global warming, melting ice caps, and rising sea levels. It's sad to think about how our actions are impacting the planet, but it's also inspiring to learn about the ways we can help protect the environment and reduce our carbon footprint. We also read some really interesting stories about people who have been affected by natural disasters and how they have overcome the challenges they faced. It's amazing to see how resilient and brave people can be in the face of adversity.Overall, Unit 3 has been a really engaging and informative unit. We have learned so much about the power of nature and how important it is to take care of our planet. I can't wait to see what we will learn in the next unit!篇2Oh wow, Unit 3 in our high school English book is super interesting! It's all about environmental protection and I learned so much from it. Let me share with you what I've learned.First of all, we talked about the importance of protecting our environment. We learned that the earth is our home and we need to take care of it. If we keep polluting the air and water, our planet will become really sick. So, it's super important to reduce, reuse, and recycle!Next, we learned about different ways to protect the environment. For example, we can save water by taking shorter showers and turning off the tap when we brush our teeth. Wecan also help by picking up litter and planting trees. Every little action counts! We also talked about global warming and how it's causing problems like melting ice caps and rising sea levels. It's scary to think about what could happen if we don't do something to stop it. That's why it's so important to reduce our carbon footprint by using less electricity and driving fewer cars.In conclusion, I think we all need to work together to protect our environment. Even though we're just kids, we can make a big difference if we all do our part. Let's keep learning and taking action to make our planet a better place for everyone!篇3Hello everybody! That means being able to understand and share someone else's feelings. It's like putting yourself in someone else's shoes and seeing things from their perspective. It's really important in building strong relationships. We also learn about different types of relationships, like friendships, romantic relationships, and family relationships. Each one is special in its own way and requires effort and understanding to maintain.Another important topic we cover is the impact of social media on relationships. It's all about globalization and how it affects our lives. So, globalization is like when people from all around the world come together and share ideas, cultures, and stuff. It's pretty cool because we get to learn about different countries and make new friends. But there are also some challenges that come with globalization. One big challenge is that some people worry that globalization might make all the cultures in the world the same.Like, everyone would eat the same food, wear the same clothes, and stuff. But actually, it's important to remember that diversity is a good thing. We should celebrate our differences and learn from each other.Another challenge is that globalization can sometimes lead to unfairness. For example, some big companies might move their factories to other countries where they can pay the workers less money. This is called outsourcing, and it can be really bad for the people who lose their jobs. But don't worry, there are ways to make globalization better for everyone. We can support fair trade, where companies pay workers a fair wage. Over time I have changed quite a lot. I began as a calculating machine in France in1642.Although I was young I could simplify difficult sums.I developed very slowly and it took nearly two hundred years before I was built as an analytical machine by Charles Baggage. After I was programmed by an operator who used cards with holes, I could“think”logically and produce an answer quicker than any person. At that time it was considered a technological revolution and the start of my “artificial intelligence”. In 1936my real father, Alan Turing, wrote a book about how I could be made to work as a“universal machine”to solve any difficult mathematical problem. From then on, I grew rapidly both in size and in brainpower. By the 1940s I had grown as large as a room, and I wonders if I would grow any longer. However, this reality also worried my designers. As time went by, I was made smaller.First as a PC(personal computer)and then as alaptop, I have been used in offices and homes since the 1970s.

These changes only became possible as my memory improved.First it was stored in tubes, then on transistors and later on very small chips. As a result I totally changed my shape. As I have grown older I have also grown smaller. Over time my memory has developed so much that, like an elephant, I never forget anything I have been told! And my memory became so large that even I couldn’t believe it! But I was always so lonely standing there by myself, until in the1960s they gave me afamily connected by a network. I was able to share my knowledge with others through the World Wide Web.

Since the 1970s many new applications have been found for me. I have become very important in communication, finance and trade.I have also been put into robots and used to make mobile phones as well as help with medical operations. I have even been put into space rockets and sent to explore the Moon and Mars. Anyhow,my goal is to provide humans with a life of high quality. I am now truly filled with happiness that I am a devoted friend and helper of the human race!

Using LanguageReading,speaking and writingANDY—THE ANDROID机器人安迪I’m part of an android football team.

About once a year we are allowed to get together to play a game of football.

I’m as big as a human. It fact, I look like one too.

On the football team I’m a striker so I have to be able to run very fast.

My computer ships help me to move and think like a human.

For example, I have learned to signal to my teammates in computer language to give me the ball when I am open and have a good for a goal.

My first football competition was in Nagoya, Japan several years ago.

Last year our team went to Seattle, Washington in the USA. We won second place.

Personally, I think the team that won first place cheated.

I could like to play against a human team, for I have been programmed to act just like them.
