The adhesive began to break down and the pine cones started falling all over our front porch. We took the wreath down, planning to repair it,and gathered up the pine cones. The machine is equipped with a soft gripper(夹子), a force-sensing wrist and an external camera, allowing the robot to detect the tower’s ___35___ the way a human might do.Unlike in purely recognitive tasks or games such as chess or Go, playing the game of Jenga also requires mastery of physical acts such as pushing, pulling, placing, and arranging pieces. It must ___36___ interactive physical operation, where you have to touch the tower to learn how and when to move blocks.Imitating it is rather difficult, so the robot has to learn in the real world, by working with the real Jenga tower. Recently, a relevant research was published in the journal Science Robotics. Researchers say the robot demonstrates that machines can learn how to perform certain tasks through actual touching instead of relying heavily on visual ___37___. That physical ___38___ is significant, researchers say, because it provides further proof that robots can be used to perform ___39___ tasks, such as separating recyclable objects from landfill trash and assembling consumer products. In a cellphone assembly line, the felling of any component is coming from force and touch rather than vision. To become an accomplished Jenga player, the robot did not require as much repetitive practice as you might imagine. Hoping to avoid reconstructing a Jenga tower thousands of times, researchers developed a method that allowed the robot to be trained on about 300 games. Researchers say the robot has already begun facing off against humans, who remain ___40___ players -- for now.Ⅲ. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.( A )After some blood tests, Dr. Strubs stood before me, a tall man, but short on personality and sporting a cold expression. “You have systemic lupus(狼疮),” he said matter-of-factly. “Lupus,” he continued, “it an auto-immune disease and ... “ I remember certain details but mostly I remember him talking about children. “Children are no harm. But childbirth would jumpstart additional symptoms that could be life threatening. You already have two kids anyway.”As I got up to leave, shaken and drained, he said his parting words, “I would discourage any further research. There is no cure and nothing can prevent its progression.”Still, I did research lupus and its symptoms -tiredness and joint pain -were both consistent with what I was experiencing. And eventually some major organs could be affected, causing shutdown and possibly death.I studied and found out that echinacea(紫锥花)had a record in making immune system stronger. I decided that along with the plant I would strengthen my mindset by immersing myself in my family with my one-year-old son and three-year-old daughter. After another visit, I decided never to go back to Dr. Strubs. How could one endure repeatedly hearing desperate words coming from an emotionless mouth even though they were truth? The years passed. When I would feel tired and achy I pulled support from my children and their laughter. Finally, after eight years, I went to Dr. Kirkstein who was recommended by a friend. She stood there holding my had and looking into my eyes warmly.“So, let’s talk a little.”Instantly my defenses were down. Before I knew it, she had me running on and on about my children, my husband, my life and dreams. I told her about all the meaningful activities I was involved in, those things I might have never done without the disease. After several follow-up tests, and greater research into my family history, Dr. Kirkstein came to conclusive answer. I did not have systemic lupus. There must be something wrong with the initial tests 8 years before.I didn’t know whether I should jump for joy or scream because I had been living the last eight years in fear of a fatal disease. But then I realized that I had been living every day, not so much in fear, but happiness. Every day was a gift and I knew it.56. Dr. Strubs warned the author against having more children because_______.A. the process of giving birth might put her life in dangerB. taking care of children will gradually worsen her diseaseC. her disease will threaten the health of her childrenD. she already has enough children57. Why did the author stop seeing doctor Strubs after two visits?A. Because he was not qualified to treat her disease.B. Because he recommended Dr. Kirkstein to her.C. Because his cold attitude upset the author.D. Because she suspected his diagnosis about her disease.58. How did the author deal with the disease?A. She calmly waited for major organs to shut down.B. She took effective medicine regularly to fight the disease.C. She turned to Dr. Kirkstein to get cure for the disease.D. She tried to strengthen immune system and drew strength from family.59. Why did the author think every day in the past 8 years was a gift?A. Because systemic lupus was no longer a deadly disease.B. Because she made every day valuable in spite of disease.C. Because she received a gift every day from her family.D. Because she only occasionally felt pain and tiredness.( B )While faking and fierce looks are among animals’ great defenses, many species know that everyone runs from a big stink(臭气)too.Vulture(秃鹫)Vulture, are street sweepers that feast on the rotting flesh of dead animals, which benefits us by ridding our highways and landscapes of animal bodies and the bacteria they might carry. When vultures feel threatened they vomit(呕吐), and the smell of vomited-on dead bodies puts off most predators. Throwing up allows the vulture to fly away more quickly -- and the vomit can hurt the aggressor’s eyes and fave.Opossum(负鼠)In some ways opossums have it easy. In order to become “dead”, they don’t have to fax anyone a death certificate. They just lie there with their tongues hanging out with the smell of dead flesh, sometimes for hours, effectively convincing potential predators(捕食者)they can find a much fresher meal elsewhere. Even if they keep getting attacked, they won’t move any more than a human statue until the threat has passed.Hoatzin(麝雉)Hold your nose and meet the hoatzin, a bird with a number of distinctions, not the least of which is that it smells like fresh cow shit. The animal mostly eats leaves and it’s the only bird known to digest by fermentation(发酵), like a cow. This process is what causes its smell and has earned it the nickname the “stink bird”.Millipede(千足虫)Millipedes are tricky. For starters they look wormy. Their name is deceptive, too: Their legs number about 750. Their major defense is to curl up into a ball. They, though, also release a noxious defensive spray that can irritate skin, harm eyes, and leave a horrible smell on their attackers.Sea Hare(海兔)The graceful sea hare is plain in taste in the first place, so it’s no the most popular dish in the sea food chain. Nonetheless, this type of sea creature has a pretty creative smell-related defense that is almost the opposite of its smelly companions on this list. The sea hare gives out a slimy, purple ink, the substance which makes food less palatable to predators.Researchers using lobsters(龙虾)as model predators found that the sea hare ink blocks the lobster’s receptive mechanism. In other words, the sea hare gives its attacker the equivalent ofa stuffy nose so they don’t know how appealing it is.60. The sea hare defends itself from predators by _______.A. becoming plain in taste at the discovery of a predatorB. giving out purple ink to make itself invisible to predatorsC. releasing substance to make predators unable to smell itD. giving off smelly gas to try to drive predators away61. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage ?A. The vulture carries bacteria so that predators dare not get close to it.B. The opossum fakes its death to avoid being targeted by predators.C. The hoatzin eats cow shit so that it is nick-named as “stink bird.”D. The gas released by millipede was basically harmless.62. The species that enjoys more than one defense mechanism is _______.A. vultureB. opossumC. millipedeD. sea hare( C )ARCHAEOLOGISTS(考古学家)GUIDED BY laser images of a remote region of northern Guatemala have discovered 20-foot-high walls, watchtowers, and other evidence that ancient Maya societies had been annoyed by warfare threat over many years. The finds have upended long-established impressions of a civilization that it tamed the jungle and built thriving cities, then declined and disappeared quietly beneath the dense tropical forest.Among the most surprising discoveries was a large stone complex now called La Cuernavilla. Built on a steep ridge, the heavily fortified(加固的)site included high walls, moats (护城河)which serves as the largest defensive system ever discovered in the region.“This was surprising,” says an archaeologist, “because we had a tendency to romanticize Maya warfare as something that was largely ritualized. But the fortifications we’re seeing now suggest an elevated level of antagonism over centuries. Rulers were so deeply alarmed that they felt the need to invest in all these hilltop fortifications. There is an almost visible sense of fear in this landscape.”All these findings owe credit to PACUNAM LIDAR Initiative, a laser survey of some 800 square miles of the Maya Biosphere Reserve in northern Guatemala. Using revolutionary laser technology, the survey revealed the long-hidden ruins of a sprawling pre-Columbian civilization that was far more complex and interconnected than most Maya specialists had supposed.Guided by the new Laser treasure maps, the LiDAR team deployed through the jungle over the past year to conduct hands-on investigations of more than a dozen of the most promising sites- most of which would have been imperceptible without LiDAR.“You could walk over the top of a major ruin and miss it,” says an archaeologist who’s part of the PACUNAM project. “But LiDAR picks up the patterns and makes the features pop out with surprising clarity.”Three-dimensional maps generated by the survey yielded surprises even at Tikal, the largest and most extensively explored archaeological site in Guatemala. The ancient city was at least four times bigger than previously thought, and surrounded by a massive ditch(沟)and fortified base stretching for miles.Archaeologists stress that LiDAR, for all its utility, will never see below the ground or yield direct dates of occupation. “We’ll still need to dig and hack our way through the jungle, but now we have a very accurate map to guide us.”63. How did people think of Maya before the discovery of the defense ruins?A. It was the most advanced civilization in the history of mankind.B. It was long under the threat of large-scale wars.C. Its rise and decline were under way peacefully.D. It was finally destroyed by a large-scale war.64. The underlined word antagonism is closest in meaning to _______.A. miseryB. revolutionC. population decreaseD. opposition65. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage ?A. The military mechanism found in La Cuernavilla was intended for occupying more lands.B. The new laser technology was mainly used to enlarge the original site size.C. The LiDAR helps to avoid the traditional digging task in site exploration.D. The Tikal site was found to be protected by certain defense works.66. The passage is mainly about_______.A. people’s long-time misunderstanding of Maya civilizationB. discovery of Maya military works aided by new explore technologyC. the finding of a big warfare resulting in the disappearance of Maya civilizationD. The various advantages of new technologies in the field of archaeologySection CDirections:Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box.jaguar(美洲虎)enclosure at Wildlife World Zoo, Arizona. The jaguar ripped into her arm. Bystanders pulled her away before the animal could injure her further. She’s fine --so is the jaguar. This isn’t the first time a story of a person acting rudely to get close to a wild animal made headlines. Last year, a man jumped into a lion enclosure at a zoo for a close-up photo. ___67___ Multiple tourists in Yellowstone National Park have been attacked by bison(野牛)when they’ve gotten too close for a photo. It’s common sense not to get close to wild animals that can hurt you. It’s why zoos have barriers ---sometimes multiple walls --to keep people separated from animals. Signs posted everywhere state the obvious warning. Keep your hands off the cage.“Yet animals have become less real to us,” says an environmentalist. We see exotic animals most frequently in managed settings like zoos. ___68___ People are trying to take advantage of their rarity to show off on social media and ignore their fierceness.Media often normalize interaction with dangerous animals. Seeing a man like “Lion Whisperer” Kevin Richardson regularly play-fight with lions on TV, may send the message that these animals aren’t so dangerous after all.Social media are also perfectly positioned to contribute to the rise of animal selfies. Getting likes and comments provide instant satisfaction. Your self-esteem actually gets atemporary boost. To hold onto that feeling, people may go to more and more extremes to showcase the most exciting versions of themselves. It may not be enough to get a photo of a beautiful, dangerous animal from outside a cage. ___69___People’s careless approach can put the animal’s safety at risk as well. Zoo animals often must be killed to protect the person who’s entered their space. In fact, thrill-seekers actively endanger the lives of animals. ___70___ With the zoo environment, they take it for granted that animals are there for people, ignoring the fact that animals and humans are both equal existents in the nature.Ⅳ. summary WritingDirections: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.Peter woke up one morning with all the usual signs of a nasty cold: severe headache and blocked nose. Then he did what almost everyone does on a day like this. He got up and went to work. Such is the state of what the human resources industry has come to call presenteeism. Many experts claim that presenteeism is now a bigger problem in the UK than absenteeism and could even help explain the country’s weak productivity growth. A growing number of companies are realizing presenteeism and doing something about it. This generally takes the from of programmes full of once unimaginable sweets: cheap gym membership, veggie salads in the canteen, stand-up desks and the odd massage. Of course, there’s nothing against lunchtime dentistry or free workout. They do more good than harm. But such welfares alone won’t do much to stop people from presenteeism. The chief reasons why people soldier on have nothing to do with how fit they are. They work for leaner, more stressed companies where dismissals are common. This makes some people worried that they will be targeted in the next round of job cut if they have taken a lot of time off. Others worry about troubling stretched colleagues with more work in their absence. How annoying it is to be faced with cold faces when you return to office after two days’ rest at home! There is not much to be said for “silly things” like ping-pong tables and office bean bags. The key to dealing with presenteeism lies in training managers to be better at spotting swiftly when employees are under too much stress or ill, and dealing with the situation sensibly putting the sick employee to sick leave although he is reluctant. Of course, work has to be done to eliminate employee’s concern about his job prospect thereof.第Ⅱ卷Ⅴ. TranslationDirections: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets72. 暴饮暴食被一些人认为是缓解工作压力的手段。

He was the man who inspired the Beat Generation, and nearly half a century after his death Jack Kerouac is still receiving grateful letters from his fans. Most letters are sent in the post to his last home in St Petersburg, Florida, and the mail box in the front yard is full to bursting. But others aredelivered by hand, pushed under the front door or left on the doorstep. They usually thank the author of On the Road for inspiring them to travel and be independent. “You remind me to stay true to who yo u are and to encourage a sense of adventure in all of us.” reads one letter, handwrittenby “Cindy” on paper covered with pictures of butterflies and flowers. She adds, “I hope you’re writing, liberated and drinking a glass of wine.”Another, signed “Friend of Jack”, reads, “I prefer to think of myself as a free spirit and a person who follows a path of her own choosing. You have always been my inspiration.”His home, where he was living with his mother Gabrielle and his wife Stella, has become a destination for hundreds of fans every year.Kerouac rocketed to fame at the age of 35, with the publication of On the Road in 1957.But after becoming a symbol and leader of the alternative lifestyle movement, he struggled with that fame and claimed that he only wanted people to read his books.Kerouac died just 12 years after On the Road was published. I am delighted with the house I am renting from him, which suits me perfectly.Mr. Heathcliff is my only neighbour, and I think his character is similar to mine. He does not like people either. When I introduced myself, he said nothing, but frowned, and did not encourage me to enter. After a while, however, he decided to invite me in.“Joseph!” he called. Joseph was an old servant. He looked crossly up at me as he took my horse. “ God help us! A visitor! ” he whispered to himself. Perhaps there were no other servants, I thought. And it seemed that Heathcliff hardly ever received guests. His house is called Wuthering Heights. The name means “a windswept house ona hill”, and it is a very good description. The trees around the house are bent by the north wind, which blows fiercely every day of the year. Fortunately, the house is strongly built, and is not damaged even by the worst winter storms.Mr. Heathcliff and I entered the huge main room. We sat down by the fire, in silence.“Joseph!” shouted Mr. Heathcliff. No answer came from the cellar, so he dived down there, leaving me alone with several rather fierce-looking dogs. Suddenly one of them jumped angrily up at me, and in a moment all the others were attacking me.“Help! Mr. Heathcliff! Help!” I shouted. My landlord was nowhere to be seen, but luckily a woman, who might be the housekeeper, rushed into the room tocalm the dogs.“What is the matter?” Mr. Heathcliff asked me rudely, as he finally entered the room, accompanied by his man-servant.“Your dogs, sir!” I replied. “You shouldn’t leave a s tranger with them. They’re dangerous.”“Come, come, Mr. Lockwood. Have some wine. We don’t often have strangers here. I’m afraid neither I nor my dogs are used to receiving them.” I could not feel offended after this, and accepted the wine. We sat drinking and talking together for a while. I suggested visiting him tomorrow. He did not seem eager to see me again, but I shall go anyway. He seems a fascinating man.1. In which order should the following events be arranged?a. Young people in the United States do not have a strong understanding of the world and their place in it.Two US-based groups, the Council on Foreign Relations and the National Geographic Society, conducted an online survey last year. They wanted to know what young people in American colleges knew about geography, U.S. foreign policy, recent international events, and economics. The survey was given to over 1,200 Americans between the ages of 18 and 26years. All of them presently attending, or having previously graduated from, a 2- or 4-year college or university. The average test score, out of 75 total possible answers, was 55 percent. The study identifies a few important problems. For example, only 30 percent knew that the only part of the U.S. government that can declare war is Congress. Only 60% of those taking the survey could identify Brazil on a world map.Part of the problem, argue the organizers of the survey, is the Internet. They say it is becoming harder to find high-quality information about world events amongst all the fake news and trivia which swamp the web. Forty-three percent of those questioned said they read about the news on Facebook.Another problem is that most college courses do not require students to learn about international issues. If such information is not required, Richard Haass from the Council on Foreign Relations said, then the United States could have leaders like Gary Johnson. He was a recent presidential candidate who did not know about the Syrian city of Aleppo when a reporter asked him about it.The survey results were not all bad. The young people also demonstrated agood understanding of climate change and renewable energy. And the majority of them said that international issues were becoming more important to them.Haass says these findings suggest the need to find ways to get goodinformation to students, both in school and online. To help, the Council on Foreign Relations is creating a new program called CFR Campus, designed tohelp build knowledge about global issues.1. What do we know about the survey?A. The participants were all recent university graduates.B. It was an online survey conducted by two US universities.C. It was given to over 1,200 American people aged from 18 to 26.D. It aimed to find out what the young people know about America.2. What’s one reason survey organizers give for young people’s lack of knowledge?A. The poor quality of the US university system.B. Young people’s unwillingness to travel abroad.C. The sources from which they get their information.D. Their lack of interest in knowing more about the world.3. What topic did the young Americans understand best according to the survey?A. Government organizations.B. Geographic information.C. Foreign relations.D. Environmental matters.4. In which column of a newspaper could we find this article?A. Economics.B. Education.C. National Politics.D. Entertainment.4. You can’t make a call or send a text on your mobile phone in the US townof Green Bank, West Virginia. Wireless Internet is outlawed, as is Bluetooth. As you approach the tiny town on a two-lane road that snakes through the mountains, your mobile phone signal drops out, and your radio stops working. The rusted pay phone on the north side of town is the only way for a visitorto reach the rest of the world. It’s a pre-modern place by design, lacking of the latest technologies that define life today. The reason for the town’s empty airwaves is apparent the moment you arrive. It’s the Robert C. Byrd telescope, also known as the GBT, a shiny white, 147-metre-tall satellite dish. It’s the largest of i ts kind in the world and oneof nine in Green Bank, all of them government owned and operated by theNational Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO).You don’t look through these kinds of telescopes. They’re radio telescopes, so instead of looking for distant stars, they listen for them. There’s a long line of astronomers all over the world who want to use the telescope which is so sensitive that it could hear a single snowflake hitting the ground 1,000 miles away.Such a sensitive listening tool needs total technological silence to operate, so in 1958 the US government created a National Radio Quiet Zone, a 33,000 km2 area covering Green Bank where, to this day, electronic and radio signalsare forbidden every hour of every day.People who live within a 15km of the Green Bank telescope are allowed to use landline telephones, wired Internet and cable televisions, but microwave ovens, wireless Internet and radios are forbidden. You can have a mobile phone, but you won’t get a signal.Because of how much its way of life varies from the rest of America, Green Bank seems to be a somewhat isolated (隔绝), even alien place. For locals, the technology ban is annoying. For others who come to Green Bank for a littlerest and relaxation, the town has become a refuge .1. What do we know about the town of Green Bank from Paragraph 1?A. It’s located at the base of a large mountain.B. It is geographically and technologically isolated.C. Public phones, wireless Internet and mobile phones.D. Landline phones, microwave ovens and cable internet.4. What does the underlined word “refuge” in the last paragraph most probably mean?A. A place of escape.B. A source of confusion.C. An area of interest.D. A sign of danger.二、七选五5. A 2018 statistic shows that women nowadays hold just 5.8 percent of CEOs positions at S&P 500 companies, according to Catalyst. While i t’s not a huge shock that women are somewhat underrepresented in leadership positions, what is surprising though, is the fact that females may actually be better suited to lead in almost every area, at least according to new findings from the BI Norwegian Business School. In their research, Professor Martinsen and Professor Lars Glas surveyed (调查) 2,900 managers with a special focus on personality types. The results were clear: Women scored higher than men in four of the five major leadership-centric categories. While some people believe that men inherently make better leaders — probably because they picture a leader with a commanding voice, which is more typical of men than women — this piece of research suggests that women are better at methodical management and goal-setting, openness, sociability and supportiveness, as well as ability to communicate clearly. There was one area in which men scored higher than women, though, and that was on emotional stability and ability to face job-related pressure and stress. The results suggest that women are more sensitive to the effects of high-pressure or highly emotional situations.Obviously, it’s important to consider individual(个人的) differences. Anyone, regardless of gender, may be an inspiring leader and a competen t boss. So next time you’re hiring for a management position, you just might want to give the resumes(简历) from female candidates a harder look.1.What makes us shocked much at leadership positions?A.Women are worse than men.B.Men take almost all high positions.C.There is a huge gap between genders.D.Women might behave better in every field.2.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word ‘‘inherently” in paragraph 4?A.properlyB.potentiallyC.naturallyD.normally3.Which of the following may be the best title of this text?A.How We Can Figure Out The Boss.B.Why Women Are Better Than MenC.Why Women Make Better BossesD.How We Can Tell Gender Difference4.Who might have special interest in this article?A.Job hunters.B.Employers.C.Employees.D.University students.3、On a February afternoon in a classroom, Taylor came face to face with a cow-but it was all in her head.A virtual(虚拟的)reality headset had transported her and her classmates to a farm 250 miles away and for them, the technology means field trips are no longer limited by a bus ride.On any given day, students nationwide walk through fields, dive into deep sea, and observe medical operations by using such headset. It's another way to attract the iPhone generation of students and improve their understanding and their grades.Richard Lamb is a scientist working at Buffalo Science Lab. In the lab, the physical effects of virtual reality become clear as participants experience motion (运动) sickness without m oving. “Some of the research we’re doing has shown that what you experience in virtual reality has very similar responses that you would get if you were doing the actual activity, ” Lamb said. It's unknown how many classrooms have or will adopt the technology, but experts say it's still relatively rare. While individual headsets that require a user’s phone can cost as little as $20 or $30, systems and software for classes will cost thousands of dollars. Early complaints about a lack of good software are fading as more companies enter the market, but the rules for use haven't necessarily caught up with the technology. In New York, virtual lab experiments don’t count toward the state's hands-on lab time requirements. Even so, the sciences are an area w here virtual reality holds particular promise for classrooms. “The big gest impediment is going to be the quality of that experience, and that means how closely it mimics (模仿) the physical world, ” said David Evans, a scientist. “ Doing dangerous things and running into a lot more cases represent a huge learning opportunity.”Lamb agree d. “Too often in schools, when we do things in labs, you mix things together and you get this outcome. And if you don't get that outcome, you did something wrong, but we d on't have enough resources for you to redo it,” he said. “In virtual reality, all I do is on the computer. I don’t have to actually use chemicals.”1.What does a virtual reality headset really help the students do?A.Take some exercise.B.Perform an operation.C.Go for a bus ride.D.Have different experiences.2.The technology is rarely used in classrooms mainly because ________.A.students show little interest in itB.it's too expensive for users to afford itC.supporting software is inaccessible yetD.it's inconvenient to be operated by students3.Which word can replace the underlined wor d “impediment” in Paragraph 5?A.Opportunity.B.Difficulty.C.Surprise.D.Disappointment.4.Which of the following statements do both Lamb and Evans agree with?A.This technology can save students a lot of time.B.This technology is safe when used in experiments.C.This technology can enrich students' learning experiences.D.This technology can produce a better result in real life.4、No student of a foreign language needs to be told that grammar is complex. By changing the order of the words and by adding a range of auxiliary verbs (助动词) and suffixes (后缀), we can turn a statement into a question, state whether an action has taken place or is soon to take place, and perform many other word tricks to convey different meanings. However, the question which many language experts can’t understand and explain is—who created grammar? Some recent languages evolved due to the Atlantic slave trade. Since the slaves didn’t know each other’s languages, they developed a make-shift language called a pidgin. Pidgins are strings of words copied from the language of the landowners. They have little in the way of grammar, and speakers need to use too many words to make their meaning understood. Interestingly, however, all it takes for a pidgin to become a complex language is for a group of children to be exposed to it at the time when they learn their mother tongue. Slave children didn’t simply copy the strings of words used by their elders. They adapted their words to create an expressive language. In this way complex grammar systems which come from pidgins were invented.Further evidence can be seen in studying sign languages for the deaf. Sign languages are not simply a group of gestures; they use the same grammatical machinery that is found in spoken languages. The creation of one such language was documented quite recently in Nicaragua. Previously, although deaf children were taught speech and lip reading in the classrooms, in the playgrounds they began to invent their own sign system, using the gestures they used at home. It was basically a pidgin and there was no consistent grammar. However, a new system was born when children who joined the school later developed a quite different sign language. It was based on the signs of the older children, but it was shorter and easier to understand, and it had a large range of special use of grammar to clarify the meaning. What’s more, they all used the signs in the same way. So the original pidgin was greatly improved. Most experts believe that many of the languages were pidgins at first. They were initially used in different groups of people without standardization and gradually evolved into a widely accepted system. The English past tense—“ed” ending—may have evolved from the verb “do”. “It ended” may once have been “It end-did”. It seems that children havegrammatical machinery in their brains. Their minds can serve to create logical and complex structures, even when there is no grammar present for them to copy.1.What can be inferred about the slaves’ pidgin language?A.It was difficult to understand.B.It came from different languages.C.It was created by the landowners.D.It contained highly complex grammar.2.What is the characteristic of the new Nicaraguan sign language?A.No consistent signs were used for communication.B.Most of the gestures were made for everyday activities.C.The hand movements were smoother and more attractive.D.The meaning was clearer than the previous sign language.3.Which idea does the author present in the last paragraph?A.English grammar of past tense system is inaccurate.B.Children say English past tense differently from adults.C.The thought that English was once a pidgin is acceptable.D.Experts have proven that English was created by children.4.What is the best title for the passage?A.The Creators of GrammarB.The History of LanguagesC.Why Pidgins Came into BeingD.How Grammar Systems Are Used5、Some Ways to Increase Your Reading SpeedDo you have a lot of reading to do before class tomorrow? Inspired by the current litigation (诉讼)in Flint, Michigan, a caseof water pollution from 2014 to 2015, Rao designed a new testing system that resulted in her being named America’s Top Young Scientist for 2017.Rao had been following the water problem for about two years. She was amazed by the number of people affected by lead pollution in water and wanted to do something to change this. Gitanjali spent months trying to convince local high schools and colleges to give her lab time to continue her experiment. At home, Gitanjali worked on her project in the “science room” she asked her parents to create for her. Rao has created a device that uses three parts: a cartridge, a Bluetooth reader and an app. To put it simply, the cartridge contains carbon nanotubes(纳米管) that react to lead. This reaction is then registered by the Bluetooth reader, which sends a signal to a mobile app that can tell you immediately if your water is safe to drink.Rao appropriately named the device Tethys after the Greek goddess of fresh water, and is hoping to make a little improvement to get the device on the market. While we may not be aware of any lead pollution present in our aging pipelines, lead poisoning can cause delays in physical and mental development. With Rao believing that the “purpose of science is to make a difference”, her incredible invention could make a difference to millions of people in the United States.1.What do we know about Rao’s device?A.It’s cheap and quick.B.It’s cheap and inacc urate.C.It’s expensive and reliable.D.It’s portable and time-consuming.2.What made Rao have the idea of designing the device?A.Her parents’ suggestions.B.The name of the Greek goddess.C.Her interest in settling real problems.D.The water pollution litigation in Flint.3.What do the carbon nanotubes function as?A.Sending immediate signals.B.Recording the reaction results.C.Cetecting the presence of lead.D.Showing the water quality results.4.What does the author think of Rao’s invention?A.It will lead Rao to make a fortune.B.It will help millions of Americans drink safe water.C.It will promote the development of science in America.D.It will soon settle the lead-polluted problem thoroughly.5、根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
