A longtime fan of Shakespeare, he made his directorial debut with Looking for Richard, a quasidocumentary on the play Richard III. Pacino has received numerous lifetime achievement awards, including one from the American Film Institute. In 2003, Brest wrote and directed Gigli, starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. After a protracted battle between Revolution Studios and the director, a radically revised and re-shot version of the original film was released. It became a notorious flop, with a scathing critical reception and disastrous box office performance. He has not directed another film since then.

It was six years before Brest would return with Meet Joe Black(第六感生死缘), a remake of Death Takes a Holiday, starring Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins. The film received mixed reviews and while it had a disappointing domestic box office return of $44,619,100, it fared much better overseas, taking in an additional $98,321,000 for a worldwide total of $142,940,100.

His work on 1992's Scent of a Woman earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama. The film also won Golden Globes for Al Pacino and Bo Goldman, the screenwriter. Alfredo James “Al” Pacino is an American actor and filmmaker. He is well known for playing mobsters, especially Michael Corleone in The Godfather(教父) films and Tony Montana (疤面煞 星) in Scarface, and often appeared on the other side of the law—as a police officer, a detective and a lawyer. Pacino won the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 65th Academy Awards for his performance as Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman. Prior to his win he had received seven Oscar nominations, including one other that same year. He made his feature film debut in 1969 in the film Me, Natalie（处女的烦恼）in a minor supporting role, before playing the lead role in the 1971 drama The Panic in Needle Park （毒海鸳鸯）. Pacino’s major breakthrough came in 1972 with the role of Michael Corleone in The Godfather, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. His other Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actor were for Dick Tracy and Glengarry Glen Ross.
