Although rather shocking, it should not surprise anyone who has seen the doggy parlours(客厅) where loved pets rest. Are Americans unique in treating their little friends in this way? No, the English, too, pay more attention to their pets. This can clearly be seen when we look at pet foods, which often contain more vitamins than human food. They certainly cost much. Last year the British public spent two hundred million pounds on pet food alone, to say nothing of veterinary bills or animal furniture. It is difficult not to feel angry about this when considering what the same amount could do for victims of starvation and poverty, so it’s not unusual for me to get hot under collar when I read an old man left all his money to his dog instead of his children. There are a variety of reasons why I find pets-raising alarming. They cause physical problems. An example of this is New York where they have great difficulty getting rid of the mess that dogs leave on the streets. Many people find this funny, but in a number of large cities it is a major problem. Animals can cause disease, too. It is the threat of babies — a disease with no known cure.Another problem is the carelessness of pet owners. Most little children want a dog or a cat,and they continually push their mothers and fathers until they get one. It is only when the "sweet little thing" has been brought home that the parentsrealize how much time and money must be spent on "Rover" or "Bonzo". Then they just abandon it. As a result, they are allowed to run free. English farmers lose hundreds of sheep a year, killed by someone’s pet and you must have read of children being hurt by some pets of their own.Lastly, I would only suggest that we have got our priorities wrong and that something should be done about it. In m y view, it’s time we stopped being sentimental about pets. I can see no reason why we should get upset when animals are cut up for medical experiments. This will lead us to discovering cures for serious human diseases, then I say,"keep cutting!"1. The doggy parlours are mentioned in the 1st paragraph to show ________.A. what costly lives the pets are livingB. where Americans keep their petsC. why children love their pets so muchD. how much pets depend on their masters2. In the second paragraph "to get hot under the collar" probably means ________.A. getting quite hotB. becoming excitedC. feeling extremely angryD. receiving a fashionable shirt3. According to the author, in which field can animals be most useful?A. Food.B. Sports.C. Entertainment.D. Medicine.4. What is the author’s attitude towards pets-raising?A. Sympathetic.B. Opposed.C. Pitiful.D. Supportive.【文章大意】这是一篇议论文。

What would be the best title for the passage?A. Brief Introduction to CanadaB. Canadian Arts, Culture and SportsC. Canadian ArtistsD. Canadian Arts and Culture Are World Famous2. Canada has many forms of art and culture because it has________.A. a long historyB. a large areaC. a large populationD. a variety of immigrants3. Which group of Canadian artists is well-known all over the world today?A. Native writers and screen writers.B. Photographers and actors.C. Painters and writers.D. Musicians, actors and directors.4. What does the underlined word "scoop"mean in the passage?A. Expect.B. Set up.C. Harvest.D. Ignore.BApparently everyone knows that global warming only makes climate more extreme. A hot, dry summer has caused another flood of such claims. And one of the players that benefit the most from this story is the media: the idea of "extreme"climate simply makes for more exciting news.Consider Paul Krugman writing breathlessly in The New York Times about the "rising incidence of extreme events". He claims that global warming caused the current drought in America’s Midwest, and that supposedly record-high corn prices could cause a global food crisis. But the United Nation’s latest assessment tells us precisely the opposite — there has an overall slight tendency toward less dryness in North America. Moreover, there is no way that Krugman could have identified this drought as being caused by global warming without a time machine since climate models estimate that such detection will be possible by 2048, at the earliest. And, fortunately, this year’s drought appears unlikely to cause a food crisis, as global rice and wheat supplies are plentiful. Moreover, Krugman overlooks inflation(通货膨胀): Prices have increased six-fold since 1969. So, the inflation-adjusted price of corn was higher throughout most of the 1970s.Finally, Krugman forgets that concerns about global warming are the main reason that corn prices have skyrocketed since 2005. Nowadays 40 percent of corn grown in the United States is used to produce ethanol(乙醇), which raises the price of corn — at the expense of many of the world’s poorest people.Bill Mickbben similarly worries in The Guardian about the Midwest drought and corn prices. He confidently tells us that fierce wildfires from New Mexico and Colorado to Siberia are "exactly"what the early stages of global warming look like.In fact, the latest study on global wildfire suggests that fire incidence has declined over the past 70 years and is now close to its preindustrial level. When well-meaning campaigners want us to pay attention to global warming, they often end up making overstatements. And exaggerated(夸张的) claims merely fuel public distrust andunconcern. That is unfortunate, because global warming is a real problem, and we do need to address it.5. In what way do the media benefit from extreme weather?A. They can give voice to different views.B. They can make themselves better known.C. They can choose from a greater variety of topics.D. They can attract people’s attention to their reports.6. What is the author’s comment on Krugman’s claim about the current drought in America’s Midwest?A. It will eventually get proof in 2048.B. It is based on an erroneous climate model.C. So far there is no way to prove its validity.D. A time machine is needed to tell if it is true.7. What is the main reason for the rise in corn prices according to the author?A. Inflation rates have been skyrocketing since the 1970s.B. A considerable part of corn is used to produce green fuel.C. Climate change has caused corn supply to drop markedly.D. Demand for food has been rising in the developing countries.8. What does the author think of the exaggerated claims in the media about global warming?A. They lead to public distrust about science.B. They create confusion about climate change.C. They are strategies to raise public awareness.D. They do a disservice to addressing the problem.II. 语法填空阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

Many people spend entire vacations seeing the Rockies. Banff National Park in Alberta is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Home to Lake Louise, the national park is on the top of many people's dream vacations. Several of Canada's top ski places are on the peaks (山顶) of the Canadian Rockies. While the Appalachian Mountains are mainly known as a US mountain range (山脉), they don't end once they hit the Canadian border. Whether you're looking to experience the culture or the scenery, you'll have ample chances to experience what makes Canada such an amazing place to explore.Running along the British ColumbiaYukon Territory, the Pelly Mountains set the stage for adventures.
