Swimming and English LearningCan you swim? Do you like swimming? Yes? Well, how can you learn to swim? I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I'm afraid you'll never learn to swim just by reading books about swimming or looking at others swimming. It's the same with the English study. We must practice, practice and practice.Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. The children in English - speaking countries first listen to others. Then they try to imitate and speak. We can listen to English programs on radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn't matter. Just be relaxed, and try to catch every word.Somebody may be a good listener. But he dare not speak. He's afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don't be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone so long as he knows English. Whether you know him or not is not important. When there's nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. It's interesting and also a good way to practice your spoken English. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you'll make.Reading and writing are more important for senior school students. First we must choose the books we're interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is the most important.Keep writing English diaries. We can also write English articles. You may even post them to English magazines. Don't be afraid of failure. Failure is the mother of success.Easier said than done. Well, let's do more practice from now on. I'm sure you'll learn English well in this way.(1)We should learn English by ________.A.listening and speakingB.reading and writingC.A and BD.swimming(2)What will you do with mistakes when you speak?A.Don't make mistakes.B.Study hard.C.Try not to speak English.D.Don't be afraid.(3)We can listen to English ________, according to the passage.A.by trainB.on the radioC.every minuteD.now and then【答案】(1)C(2)D(3)B【解析】你会游泳吗?你喜欢游泳吗?是吗?那么,你是怎么学会游泳的呢?我认为最好的方法是下水去学习。

第一周周练习阅读+完形061.阅读理解I owe my father a huge thank you! Sure, I need to thank him for all those years of paying my bills, fixing my bikes, and providing a shoulder to cry on. But this year I realized that his contributions to my childhood were much more than that.I grew up as Daddy's Little Girl. If I had a problem that needed fixing or a question that needed answering, he was the one I ran to. He helped me get through everything from math homework as a high school student to career choices as a young adult. He always expected that I do my best in whatever I did, and he believed I could succeed in anything I put my mind to. As a result, I learned to hold myself to those same standards. He always showed me unconditional love, which helped me learn to love myself. It was something I'd taken for granted until I realized from talking with my friends that they had no similar view of their self worth. Having fathers that didn't believe in them left them to grow up not believing in themselves. As I was growing up, my father also modeled how a woman should be lavished. He treated my mom with love and respect. As a result, I grew to expect nothing less than that from the men I dated and from the man I would eventually marry. Dad was a living picture of godliness (虔诚) , honesty and responsibility. It was only recently that I realized what a deep effect fathers have on their daughters' lives. That is why I want to thank my dad for the godly example of love that he has been to me throughout my life.(1)From the second paragraph, the author thinks it is the most valuable that .A.her father was very strict with her.B.her father helped her a lot in every way.C.nothing was difficult if her father was on her side.D.Father's trust deeply influenced her self-confidence.(2)What does the underlined word "lavished" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A.Loved.B.Respected.C.Treated.D.Spoiled.(3)Who would the author turn to when in trouble?A.Her friends.B.Her mother.C.Her husband.D.Her father.(4)The feeling the author wants to express to her father in this text is .A.gratefulB.sadC.proudD.pitiful【答案】(1)D(2)C(3)D(4)A【解析】当然,我需要感谢他这么多年来为我支付账单,为我修理自行车,为我提供一个可以依靠的肩膀。

It connects the city of Kobe, on Japan’s mainland, with Iwaya on Awaji Island. Before it opened, the only way to get between the two cities was by ferry. However, the waterway was at the mercy of severe storms and when two ferries overturned in 1955, killing 168 people, public anger convinced the government of the need for a bridge. 高三第1周周练英语试题

高三第1周周练英语试题

换兑市暧昧阳光实验学校中学高三英语第1周周练一The octopus’s(章鱼)reputation as a human-killer isn’t simply an exaggeration(夸张)—it is a total myth. The octopus can indeed be a deadly hunter, but only of its natural victims. Some shellfish(壳类动物)and an occasional sick or incautious fish have reason to be frightened of this multi-armed hunter, but a person is much too large to interest even the biggest octopus. Even the largest among octopi is much smaller than most people imagine. Far from being large enough to swallow a ship, as monster octopi in movies have been known to do, the largest octopus, found on the Pacific coast, weighs around 110 pounds and grows to no more than ten feet in width. The hard, parrot-like beak(喙)of an octopus is not used for attacking deep-sea divers, but for cutting open shellfish. Indeed, the octopus possesses such a tiny throat that it cannot swallow large pieces of meat. Instead, it feeds by pouring digestive juices into its victims, and then sucking up the soupy remains. A shellfish that finds itself in the grasp of an octopus has only a short time to live. But human beings are perfectly safe. Still, people rarely care to go close enough to these careful creatures to get a good look at them.1.This passage is mainly about .A.the horrors of the octopusB.the largest octopus in the worldC.the octopi and their behaviourD.the octopus’s deadly hunting method2.It is implied but not stated in the passage that .A.people have unreasonable fears about the octopusB.the octopus is not interested in human beingsC.the octopus is afraid of human beingsD.the octopus is a very cruel sea animal3.What does the underlined part “careful creatures” refer to in the last paragraph?A.Octopi. B.Shellfish. C.Fish. D.The victims.4.The hard beak of the octopus is used for .A.attacking deep-sea diversB.cutting up large pieces of meatC.cutting open its victimsD.defending itself5.From the passage, we can conclude that .A.the octopus is not dangerous to manB.people often fear creatures that are not dangerous to themC.the octopus only hunts its natural victimsD.things described in movies are not to be believed二We all hate speed cameras, don’t we? They’re not there to slow drivers down and lower the road accidents; they just make money for the government. They trick us, cost us cold hard cash, disturb us from driving properly and are unfair.Well, here’s a surprising thing: what if there were facts that the boring cameras actually saved lives? It’s a conclusion difficult to ignore when you look at what’s happening in France, a country with a historically poor record of road safety. There were 16,617 road deaths in 1972 in France for example, but that dropped to 8412 by 1995 following rules such as compulsory seat belt wearing in 1990 and a lowering of the blood alcohol limit to 0.05 in 1995.Last year, the road deaths dropped below 5,000 for the first time, or 4.9 per cent less than 2004. Comparing road deaths to population in 2005, that’s about 817 per million people compared with Australia’s 806.And guess what? Last year the number of speed cameras on French roads reached 1,000 and the government plans to double that within the next three years.Okay, you know the arguments regarding increased traffic safety and cameras-for-income, but it seems in France there’s been a major cultural change brought on by radars and other laws. A three-hour, wine-soaked lunch with a quick rush back to the office is no longer on.Travelling on the highways, it is rare to see anyone breaking the 130km/h speed limit when once few traveled below it. The speed cameras are clearly signed so drivers know when they are coming. There’s even an official web site listing fixed and mobile camera locations and it is updated regularly.Maybe it is because of such transparency by government, rather than the concealment too often used by authorities in many other countries that more French can enjoy la joi de vivre thanks to speed cameras. 6.Generally, it seems to most people that speed cameras are used to .A.make money for the governmentB.slow down the trafficC.lower the road accidentsD.help us drive properly7.From the passage we can learn that .A.France has a very poor record of road safetyB.we’d better ignore the evidence that speed cameras save lives C.France had less road deaths than Australia in 2005D.France does successfully in controlling road accidents 8.Which seems more effective in lowering road deaths in France according to this passage?A.Compulsory seat belt. B.Lowering blood alcohol limit.C.Placing more speed cameras. D.Eating in a shorter time. 9.Now you can seldom see in France .A.people drive at a speed of less than 130km/hB.lunch time lasts long hours with drunk people rushing back to office C.drivers drive according to the traffic lightsD.police conduct traffic in streets10.What does the underlined word “concealment”in the last paragraph mean?A.Secrecy. B.Openness. C.Strictness. D.Harmony.三Sometime early in the next century, human beings will move to Mars. They will live there for about a year, and then will be replaced with another group of pioneers. Building the base on Mars will advance our knowledge of the solar system and aid in our understanding of the earth. We already know that Mars resembles the earth in many aspects: general size, presence of water, length of day, range of temperatures. These resemblances have caused many people to consider a centuries-long project: to terraform Mars. Terraforming means altering a planet’s surface so that Earth’s life forms can survive there. This concept, previously found only in science fiction is now being seriously considered by scientists.Terraforming Mars is theoretically simple: add nitrogen and oxygen to the atmosphere; pump water to the surface; and add the earth’s plants and animals in the order in which they developed on Earth. But it will take at least 300 years. Some people think that such a project is too huge for humans to undertake, but there are very good reasons to make the attempt. The earth now contains some 6 billion people, and no one has any idea of how many humans the earth can support. Our very existence and numbers are threatening many other species. We also have had some experience with terraforming our own planet: altering the landscape, the atmosphere and the climate. Currently terraforming earth has become a wiser activity as we try to control global warming, air and water pollution, and preserve some natural living places. While the possibility of such a project is small, it is not impossible. Even if earth-bound societies come and go in the next 300 years, the project can continue through the work of the Mars settlers without the need for constant backing from the earth. The future existence of all the people in our world may very well depend upon our ability to terraform Mars.11.What would be the best title for this passage?A.Terraforming Mars. B.Saving the Earth.C.Travelling to Mars. D.A Newly-found Place.12.What does the underlined word “altering” mean in the secondparagraph?A.Warming. B.Changing. C.Planting. D.Building.13.According to the passage the main purpose of terraforming Mars is to .A.do some scientific research workB.find out its similarity to earthC.avoid the dying away of many other speciesD.find on Mars living place for the increasing human beings 14.The main reason for causing many people to consider terraforming Mars is that .A.there are some resemblances between Earth and Mars.B.terraforming Mars is theoretically simpleC.we have had some experience with terraforming our own planet: Earth D.the development of science and technology is very rapid 15.What’s the author’s attitude towards the project?A.Optimistic. B.Negative. C.Sceptical. D.Objective.四When six the very best students from different cities in Guandong province all together chose universities in Hong Kong; when the very best student of Beijing picked up HK University while giving up the nearby Peking or Tsinghua University; when the highest enrollment (录取)rate of Hong Kong Science and Industry University reached 48:1, it’s the high time to ask where the real education heaven for students in China is.Years ago, the answer certainly would be “Peking or Tsinghua University”. But now no one could give the exact reaction without hesitation. The only sure thing is that HK universities have gradually showed an unusual attraction to a great many mainland students. It’s no doubt to call this HK craze(狂热),which is even out of the expectation of those HK universities themselves. How can HK universities shake the steady foundations of Peking and Tsinghua and attract so many mainland students?First, Hong Kong universities offer large-amount scholarship, especially for the top students who can receive the sum scholarship as much as 400,000 HK dollars. Since higher education has become a kind of heavy burden of many families, it’s easy to understand why the reaction to the generous offering of HK universities is great.Second, most HK universities receive professors and students from all over the world and carry out bilingual()education. This kind of excellent language atmosphere is another attraction for mainland students.Further more, university students in Hong Kong have a better chance to study abroad as exchange students. Can mainland top universities like Peking or Tsinghua University calm as before when facing the unexpected competition from HK? Will theytake relevant measures to win back the top students who once help them set the worldwide reputation? Time will explain it.The fierce competition brought by HK universities can be a good thing for an entire improvement of education in China. After the awakening and action taking of mainland universities, they can perform better together with HK universities. At least, it reminded the mainland universities the tuition fees (学费)are among students’ top concern when they are choosing universities. It’s time to move.16.What is the passage mainly talking about?A.Some thought brought by the enrollment of HK universities.B.Higher education in Hong Kong.C.The competition between HK University and Peking University.D.The fall of mainland universities.17.Top students from mainland apply for HK universities because .A.many students now would love to study aboard to get a better experienceB.they concern only about the tuition fees when choosing universities C.HK universities offer higher scholarship, better environment and more opportunities for their further studyD.Peking university has lost its worldwide reputation 18.What is the author’s attitude toward the competition brought by HK universities?A.The government should take relevant measures to stop this unfair competition.B.Mainland universities had better lower their tuition fees and win back the top students.C.Universities both in mainland and in HK would get an entire improvement during the competition.D.It may probably cause a complete loss both sides in the end. 19.From the passage we can see HK universities .A.didn’t mean to enroll top students from mainlandB.didn’t expect their enrollment of mainland students would be so popularC.have strict enrollment rules and only 1 out of 48 students can get the chance to study thereD.are proud of their teaching staff and facilities20.What does the author mean by saying “It’s time to move” in the last paragraph?A.Mainland universities should take measures as soon as possible to attract students.B.The opportunities come for top students to study abroad.C.Mainland universities should make full preparations to challengemainland universities.D.Top students should be offered further education free of charge.五Allen: I’ve never been a big fan of the bears, especially the vacation show. On my last trip to Disneyland (1999) we passed it by, because we didn’t want to spend the time on something we didn’t really enjoy. If we’d known it would be closed by our next visit. I’m sure we would have watched it one more time. I was just making the point that it wasn’t until Disney announced the closing that this feeling suddenly sprang (弹跳) up for the Country Bear show at Disneyland. But I think the idea of keeping some attractions open forever regardless of the number of visitors it gets is a mistake. We all have great memories of the Bears, but clearly very few kids today (or I should say families today) are making those same memories from this show. That may be a sad fact, but it’s a fact. For whatever reason, the show doesn’t pull in the numbers. Isn’t it right to use the Country Bear space to bring in a more popular attraction so that more kids today can make those magic memories of an attraction they like? Otherwise aren’t we just telling kids today that they “have to”make great memories of the Bears, when it’s obvious that the kids themselves are not enjoying the Bears like we did?Roger: I am very disappointed that they have decided to retire the Country Bear Playhouse. I remember going to the show as a child, and still enjoyed it as a teenager, and now young adult. It is true that there aren’t a lot of shows left at DL and with this one closing even less. Being at DL does require a lot of walking, and it is nice to have a few attractions that are a place to sit and enjoy a good show. I understand that DL has to develop, but there has to be some history to the Disneyland that Walt Disney first designed. There should be some parts of DL that just never go away, and this is one of them. By the time I have children it looks like there won’t be any attractions that I can say I went to as a child at the rate they are going. Now the Bears are leaving. What I want to say is: stop trying to compete with everyone! DL is the best, because of attractions like the Country Bears. If DL insists on destroying all of its magic to make way for the latest, well, then it might as well be just another theme park. 21.What news might get people talking about the problem of the Country Bears?A.The Country Bear Playhouse will be closed.B.There will be a new attraction for our guests at Disneyland.C.The number of visitors to the Country Bear Playhouse is falling.D.The Bears will retire because of old age and can’t give shows any more.22.Allen spoke mainly to get his point across that ________.A.the Bears will be missedB.we should tell kids today that they “have to ” make great memories of the BearsC.the longtime attraction ought to make way for a future attraction D.people never care about what they have until all is lost 23.Which is the best choice to complete Roger’s idea: “The Country Bears have been a part of Disneyland for nearly 30 years,__________.”A.and I feel it is time to give our bears a good restB.but anyway, the attraction has lost interestC.but I know that Disneyland will always be changing, and I accept thatD.and I am sad that the Bears will be leaving24.Which of the following is not in the same group as the other three?A.an attraction B.the latest magic C.the Bears D.a theme park25.Where can this passage be found?A.In a Web discussion zone.B.In a suggestion book.C.In a report on the popularity of the Country Bears.D.In high school students’ compositions.中学高三英语第1周周练答案一.CAACA 二. 2021年高三下学期周练(1)英语试题含答案一、阅读理解If you look at the night sky, you’ll often see stars moving very quickly. In fact, they move much more quickly than they should according to their size and the laws of physics.Scientists do not pletely understand why the speed of these stars is so high. But many believe the reason is that much of the universe is made of something called “dark matter”. Groups of stars called galaxies, such as the Milky Way, might even be made up of 90 percent dark matter. How much something weighs depends on where it is. The same object weighs only half as much on Mars as it does on Earth and almost three times as much on Jupiter. So scientists prefer to talk about the mass (质量) of something rather than how much it weighs, because mass does not change. They can work out the mass of galaxies by measuring the distance between them and the speed they move at. Recently, Jorge Peñarrubia, a senior academic at Edinburgh University, UK, and his team discovered something interesting: The mass of the Milky Way is only half as much as the mass of another nearby galaxy, Andromeda. This seems strange, and dark matter may explain why.Finding out more about dark matter could help us understand how the universebegan, but this is not easy. Lots of scientists with different types of expert knowledge are working on the problem. We can’t see dark matter, it’s very difficult to measure and we can’t find out its mass. Unlike stars, dark matter doesn’t produce or reflect light. But we can make a good guess that it is there because of the way things move and the way light bends. Experts now think dark matter may be very different from the matter that we find on Earth. There may also be five times as much dark matter in the universe as ordinary matter.1.Something that weighs 15kg on Earth weighs about _____ on Mars and _____ on Jupiter.A. 7.5 kg, 45 kgB. 30 kg, 45 kgC. 45 kg, 7.5 kgD. 5 kg, 30 kg2.The author mentions the masses of the Milky Way and Andromeda mainly to _____.A. explain why the same object has a different weight on different starsB. pare the distance between the Milky Way and AndromedaC. show that studying dark matter could help to answer some scientific questionsD. support the idea that scientists prefer to talk about mass instead of weight 3.Dark matter is difficult to investigate because _____.A. it travels at a very fast speedB. we can’t see where it is or measure its massC. it’s hard to measure the light it produces and reflectsD. it is much bigger than ordinary matter in size4.According to the text dark matter _____.A. could accelerate the speed of starsB. could lessen the mass of objects in galaxiesC. makes up the entire universe and its starsD. may help us identify the origins of the universeWhat's the most important thing in life?People's answers vary greatly. For British scientist Robert Edwards, the answer is having a child. "Nothing is more special than a child," he told the BBC.Edwards, the inventor of the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) technology—more monly known as "test-tube (试管) baby" technology—passed away on April 10, xx at the age of 87."Edwards changed the lives of millions of ordinary people who now rejoice (高兴) in the gift of their own child," said Peter Braude, a professor at King'sCollege London. "He leaves the world a much better place."Edwards started his experiments as early as the 1950s, when he had just finished his PhD in genetics. At that time, much of the public viewed test-tube babies as "scary", according to Mark Sauer, a professor at Columbia University, US.Edwards and his colleague Patrick Steptoe faced opposition from churches, governments and media, not to mention attacks from many of their fellow scientists. "People said that we should not play God and we should not interfere with nature," Edwards once told Times. He said that he felt "quite alone" at the time."But Edwards was a fighter, and he believed in what he was doing," said Sauer. Without support from the government, the two struggled to raise funds to carry on. And in 1968 they finally developed a method to successfully fertilize human eggs outside the body. The first test-tube baby was born on July 25, 1978. Her name was Is Louise Brown. Despite people's safety concerns, Brown was just as healthy as other children."IVF had moved from vision to reality and a new era in medicine had begun,"BBC mented.Ever since then, public opinion has evolved considerably. Couples who were unable to have babies began thronging (拥向) to Edwards' clinic. Nowadays, Reuters reports, some 4.3 million other "test-tube" children exist. Edwards received a Nobel Prize in xx and was knighted (封为爵士) by Queen Elizabeth in the following year. Before his death, Edwards was still in touch with Louise. "He is like a granddad to me," she said in an interview with the Daily Mail.He is a granddad to millions, in fact.5.What’s the article mainly about?A. The first test-tube baby.B. But now a study has found it really does help people nod off—if it is milked from a cow at night.Researchers have discovered that “night milk” contains more melatonin(褪黑激素), which has been proven to help people feel sleepy and reduce anxiety. The study, by researchers from Seoul, South Korea, involved mice being fed withdried milk powder made from cows milked both during the day and at night. Those given night milk, which contained 10 times the amount of melatonin, were less active and less anxious than those fed with the milk collected during daytime, according to the study published in The Journal of Medicinal Food. Night milk quickened the start of sleep and caused the mice to sleep longer. While the effect of cows milk harvested at different times has not been tested on humans up to now, taking melatonin drugs has been suggested to those who are struggling to fall asleep at night.Previous studies have also indicated that milk can be excellent for helping sleep because of the calcium content, which helps people to relax.Milk is also sugar-free and additive-free with nutritionists remending skimmed milk as the best choice before bed as it is the least fattening. A lot of the story below is true… but did it really happen quite like this? Our story begins not in the icy cold waters of the North Atlantic, but rather thousands of miles away in Egypt. It is here, perhaps, that we can find the startof the mystery of the Titanic, in the year 1910, in the great city of Cairo. One day, a famous professor of Egyptian history called Douglas Murray was staying in Cairo, when he was contacted by an American adventurer. The American had something unusual to offer Murray, something that was certain to thrill him: a beautiful ancient Egyptian mummy case, containing the mummy of an Egyptian queen. It was over 3000 years old, but in beautiful condition ------ gold, with bright paintings on it. Murray was delighted with both the object and the asking-price. He gave the man a cheque immediately. The cheque was never cashed. That evening the American adventurer died. For his part, Murray arranged to have the treasure sent back to Britain. However, it was not long before he learnt more about the beautiful mummy case: On the walls of the tomb in which it had been discovered, there were messages which warned of terrible consequences to anyone who broke into the tomb. Murray was disbelieving of these warnings until a few days later, when a gun he was holding exploded in his hand, shattering his arm. The arm had to be cut off. After the accident, Murray decided to return to his homeland. On the return journey, two of his panions died mysteriously, and two servants who had handled the mummy also passed away. The now-terrified Murray decided he would get rid of the cursed case as soon as he arrived in London. A lady he knew named JanetJones said she would like it, so he gave it to her. Shortly afterwards, Jones’ mother died, and she herself caught a strange disease. She tried returning the mummy, but naturally Murray refused it. In the end, it was presented to the British Museum.Even in the museum, the mummy apparently continued to cause strange events.A museum photographer died shortly after taking pictures of the new exhibit; and a manager also died for no apparent reason. In the end, the British Museum decided to get rid of the mummy too. They sold it to a collector in New York. At the start of April 1912, arrangements for the transfer were plete, and the mummy began the journey to its new home. But the New Yorker never received the mummy or its case. For when the Titanic sank, one of the objects in its strong room was the mummy case. 领兑市安插阳光实验学校中学高三英语上学期第10周周练一、阅读理解第一节AAs the world prepares to mark the 100thanniversary of International Women’s Day on March8,2010, a new report details the progress andchallenges girls face in getting an education. The report—from the Education for All Fast Track Initiative—highlights the importance of girls’ education for economic and social development. It follows progress in Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea, Mauritania, Mozambique and Niger.Prema Clarke, author of Fasttracking Girls’ Education, says, “Progress for girls’ education is that they can leave their homes, leave their families and come to a place to study and to learn. And that’s a big achievement because otherwise these girls have to stay at home, looking after their brothers and sisters, doing the cooking or doing the cleaning.”She says progress toward the Millennium Development Goals and those of Education for All is “allowing and enabling girls and forcing countries to look at this issue(问题)and to ensure that interventions(干预)help girls attend school.”BenefitsImproving education for girls brings many benefits, says Clarke. “It means that girls can then enter the workforce. They can look after their own families much more effectively. They can prevent child death rate. They can educate their own girl children when they begin to expand their own families.” Studies show that having an educated female population helps to improve a country’s health and economic wellbeing.WarningsThe report says, “In developing countries, too many girls are not in school, and many girls face continuing health risks and danger just walking to class.”“Especially in the fragile and postconflict countries and in many of the African countries, this is a real issue,” she says. The seeds are protected by the fruits. Some fruits have one seed, some have two, three or four, and some have many seeds. But a few fruits have no seeds at all. An example of a fruit without seeds is the banana fruit. Most non-flowering plants do not grow from seeds. They grow from spores (胚芽) , Spores are very small. 高三英语第一周周练-阅读+完形23(解析版)

高三英语第一周周练-阅读+完形23(解析版)

第一周周练习阅读+完形231.阅读理解Returning to a book you've read many times can feel like drinks with an old friend. There's a welcome familiarity — but also sometimes a slight suspicion that time has changed you both, and thus the relationship. But books don't change, people do. And that's what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative. The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register. It's true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings. But with reading, it's all about the present. It's about the now and what one contributes to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. Each has to pull their own weight. There are three books I reread annually The first, which I take to reading every spring is Emest Hemningway's A Moveable Feast. Published in 1964, it's his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating (令人陶醉的), an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time. Another is Annie Dillard's Holy the Firm, her poetic 1975 ramble (随笔) about everything and nothing. The third book is Julio Cortazar's Save Twilight: Selected Poems, because poetry. And because Cortazar. While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifs, which might add to the meaning I attach to them. But I imagine that, while money is indeed wonderful and necessary, rereading an author's work is the highest currency a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones that open further as time passes. But remember, it's you that has to grow and read and reread in order to better understand your friends.(1)Why does the author like rereading?A.It evaluates the writer-reader relationship.B.It's a window to a whole new world.C.It's a substitute for drinking with a friend.D.It extends the understanding of oneself.(2)What do we know about the book A Moveable Feas!?A.It's a brief account of a trip.B.It's about Hemingway's life as a young man.C.It's a record of a historic event.D.It's about Hemingway's friends in Paris.(3)What does the underlined word "currency" in paragraph 4 refer to?A.DebtB.Reward.C.Allowance.D.Face value.(4)What can we infer about the author from the text?A.He loves poetry.B.He's an editor.C.He's very ambitious.D.He teaches reading.【答案】(1)D(2)B(3)B(4)A【解析】回到一本你读了很多遍的书中,感觉就像和老朋友一起喝酒一样。

This seems far from the truth. Young people today as a whole are better, more informed, more ambitious, healthier, and more alert than ever before. Why then, it may be asked, do we witness such restlessness and such anti-social behavior among our young people? For the answer the citizens of this community must look at themselves. What have they done to improve the life of our youth? How many playgrounds have been built in the last fifteen year? How many swimming pools? How many vocational training projects have been started? How many community-organized youth parties and picnics have been held? The average citizen will answer that the responsibility for these activities belongs to the schools. But the schools cannot be held responsible for all the free-time activities of all the young people of this community. The job of the schools is formal education, not freetime entertainment. This community needs a youth center suitable for such activities as picnics, camping, sports, music, art, and theatricals. There could be social and entertaining activities to meet the needs and interests of every member of out school age youth.Mayor Elmo D. Usually there is a story and meaning behind each flag. The colours used on a national flag are not used simply because they look good--they usually symbolize something about the growth, values and culture of that country. Sometimes colours mean the same thing in different cultures, but they can often mean different things to people in different cultures. The French flag, sometimes called the "Tricolore", was first used in 1789, after the French Revolution The conclusion of the French Revolution led up to big changes throughout the country. Before the Revolution, there was great unrest because people did not have freedom and had often been treated unfairly. Many people died of starvation. After the Revolution, people had far more freedom, and people were considered equal, and large numbers of people were no longer starving. The colours red, white and blue used on the flag represent the principles of the Revolution-liberty, equality and friendship. Red represents bravery, revolution strength and blood. All these things were needed to change the country. Blue stands for liberty and justice while white represents peace.Strengthened by the Revolution, France became a different country soon after, and today, it is still guided by those beliefs. That France's revolution which was successful in ridding society of inequality had a big effect on many other countries, especially in Europe. Some countries elected to substitute their flags with tricolor flags, after the French. In this way, the French Tricolor has become one of the most influential national flags in history. The USA was also born from revolution, and its flag, the "Stars and Stripes", represents this. The USA was originally an area owned and occupied by Britain. At that time, there were thirteen states, which is far fewer than the fifty that make up today's USA. Some people are very unhappy with the bureaucratic way Britain ruled the country, and were quite outspoken about this. American taxpayers could no longer toleratethat they had no say in the government. They desired independence, but the British opposed this. The Americans saw that their freedom was no longer optional and that their independence would not be won by being passive. On 4 July 1776, the American Declaration of Independence was signed. With this, the USA split from Britain and became an autonomous nation with a federal government. The colours red, white and blue and the stars and stripes on the American flag are all very symbolic. Red represents strength and bravery; white represents purity and innocence; blue stands for hard work and justice. There are fifty stars on the American flag, one for each state. The thirteen stripes represent the original thirteen states that joined together to fight for independence. Each year, on 4 July, the USA celebrates Independence Day when the Stars and Stripes" can be seen all over the country, lit by fireworks in the night sky.44. The passage is mainly aboutA. national flags, colours and culturesB. different colours and culturesC. colours and national flagsD. revolution, cultures and colours45. Colours on national flags usually stand for special things of the countries.D. Generally every national flag has its own story.46. If a country is newly born in Europe from revolution, how would it be likely todesign its national flag?A. In three colours, after the USAB. With stars and stripes.C. In three colours with stars and stripes.D. In three colours, following France.DThere are so many different plastic cards that adults have to carry around—library cards, savings cards for different banks, credit cards, just to name a few... So why not have one to replace them all?Scott Barnhill, an 1l-year-old fifth-grade student in the US, has come up with an idea for a "Security One Card".Sound smart? The US Patent(专利(zhuānlì)) Office thought so, and it approved a patent for his idea in April. Here's an example of how Barnhill's idea would work.Let's say you have the three cards mentioned above. Instead of carrying them all, you could have just one by having additional magnetic strips(磁条) added to it.The magnetic strips can be added to any plastic card, even a blank one.Companies could add their information to one of the strips. For example, you could ask a library to add a strip to your bankcard.Barnhill has a lot of hobbies, including designing websites. He got the idea at the age of 9 when he saw his father using a keycard to enter their hotel room. He thought, "The hotels are wasting money with the key cards." So, instead of using a hotel-issued key card, guests could use their credit cards--if the hotel added a special magnetic strip. At check-out, the strip would simply be removed. Now that he has his patent, his next step is a letter-writing campaign to get support from major credit card companies."I'm going to be writing letters to credit card companies to ask if they can co-operate. I hope they'll give me money every time someone puts a strip on the back of another card, or every time the idea is used, " Barnhill said. "I'll write the letters and see what they say. If they say no, I'll ask someone else, another credit card company."He is hoping to make money from his patent and has decided it would be better to collect royalties(专利(zhuānlì)使用费)if the idea takes off rather than sell his patent."The ATM person who invented that sold it totally, and if he'd chosen royalties he'd get like 2 cents for every transaction (交易) and he'd be a billionaire now," Scott said.47. the advantage of “Security One Card〞 is that it ___________.A. could remove the burden of taking all kinds of plastics cardsB. would be very safeC. could save your moneyD. could have a lot of magnetic strips on it48. The immediate cause of Scott's invention was that _________.A. he found that adults have to carry around so many plastic cardsB. he realized it's big waste to make so many plastic cards instead of only oneC. he found even a hotel issued its own cards--keycardsD. he realized it would be a good chance to make big money49. To use a "Security One Card", ___________.A. one has to add additional magnetic strips to it oneselfB. one has to pay Scott Barnhill each time a magnetic strip is addedC. all the companies need to add their information to a magnetic strip by themselvesD. one has to get the permission of the credit card company first50. The underlined phrase "takes off" in the last but one paragraph probably means ______.A. makes moneyB. wins a lot of supportC. is worth a lotD. is practical51. From the story, we can see Scott is ___________.A. more magic than smartB. clever but lazyC. creative, determined and wiseD. far-sightedEUnited States President George W. Bush is expected to issue a directive in the next few weeks. It will give the US Air force a green light for the development of space weapons, US media reported last week. This would potentially trigger a new global arms race, some experts have warned. To keep that from happening, last Wednesday the White House explained that it was not considering putting weapons in space. It said it was making a shift in US space policy to allow for protection of satellites. But some defense analysts and arms control advocates argue that the policy will pave the way for the US to put both defensive and offensive weapons in space."No one should be fooled," said Theresa Hitches, an American weapons expert. The US is now restricted by a 1996 directive signed by President Bill Clinton. Plans for space weapons were vetoed by the Clinton cabinet. The directive emphasized the peaceful use of space, in agreement with almost unanimous(一致(yīzhì)的) global opinion. The US military has placed importance on space and has sent up numerous satellites for troop communications and to provide intelligence and data to guide bombs to their targets. The US Air force wants to develop space-based weapons that could strike targets any where in the world within 90 minutes of receiving the order to open fire. These new weapons under development cover a wide range. They include hunter-killer satellites(HY卫星) and orbiting weapons(沿轨道运行的武器系统). And they use lasers, radio waves, or even dense metal tubes, known as "Rods from God", dropped from space to do the damage. There are many barriers to the setting up of this kind of program, experts say.First is the cost. It is estimated that the budget may be US $ 220 billion to US $1 trillion. The technical difficulties of developing reliable space weapons are also a problem. And, the move will draw strong criticism from around the world. Experts worry about triggering a space arms race.52. The news report mainly deals with ______.A. US Military Plans.B. The Global Arms RaceC. A Comparison between Two presidents.D. President George W. Bush and the World Peace53. Which of the following statements are mentioned in the passage above?a. President George W. Bush supports space weapon development.b. The US space weapon project is very costly.c. The American space-based weapons to be developed will be able to target any place on the earth.d. The US military has few difficulties with the development of space weapons.e. The space weapon program will threaten world peace.f. Clinton government was poorer than Bush government.A. b,d,e,fB. a,c,d,fC. b,c,d,eD. a,b,c,e54. After reading this passage, it can be inferred that _________.A. George W. Bush's directive to be issued will be against global opinions.B. The White House is right in explaining that US new space policy aims to protect satellites.C. US government has little difficulty in developing new weapons.D. President George W. I could not find a satisfying job and I found this especially difficult as I had a lot of experience and a Master‟sdegree. To my shame I was driving a school bus to make ends meet (收支平衡) and living with friends. By chance, the day after I found the earring the girl asked me if anyone had looked for it. They have a need to make decisions, manage their environment and lead rather than follow. Too much rule in the hands of the young isn‟t healthy forchildren or the family. Family expert John Taylor says, “Children have secret feelings of weakness. They are always trying to feel safe. ”It‟s the parents‟duty-not the child‟s-to provide safety. When a “boss child‟‟doesn‟t learn limits(限制)at home, troubles will appear outside the family. Thechild may have trouble obeying(遵守)teachers, for example, or keeping friends. It can be pretty lonely as the top dog if no one likes your ruling ways. Bossy kids are often unusually bright. Their parents need to be especially careful to manage them. Bossy kids usually work more on the mother. It‟s important for both parents to know their child‟s weakness, to agree on key rules and to back each up.Even as you try to be kind—to a point—don‟t give up your parental ruling post. Instead, stand your ground by using body language that tells your child who the boss is.Good manners are important to family. Show a child by example how to ask for something rather than shout orders. Try asking your child to do things that are not too difficult. Then reward(奖励)him with a hug(拥抱)and words such as “Thank you. I like it when you listen to me.”Over time good manners will become associated(联结)with pleasure.1.
