Text A

Reading Comprehension 1.

1) a milestone in exploration; space exploration

2) the explosive dynamism of the private space field; viable

3) the trip could turn a profit; fussy thinking

4) 30-year vision; to become a multi-planet species

5) doubtful; negative

Reading and Discussing

3. For reference

1) Due to the energy shortage on earth, it’s essential for human beings to explore other planets, e.g., Mars. For our survival in the future, perhaps we have to be a multi-planet species.

2) Space exploration requires humans to be able to travel long distances through space and survive in space for long periods of time. The demands of even beginning to explore these possibilities test humans’ ph ysical, psychological and technological mettle. Pushing further into space exploration means overcoming huge costs, technical problems, the limitations of the human body and the uncertainties of space itself.

9. Reference translation

At the Jiuquan Space Center, Shenzhou 5 is scheduled to blast into orbit atop a Changzheng (“Long March”) rocket. But unlike those four unmanned Shenzhou test spacecrafts which have already made orbital flights, Shenzhou 5 is expected to carry a crew of up to three young pilots, which will make China the third nation to send people into space. Although representatives of three dozen countries have gone into orbit since the dawn of the space age, they have all traveled aboard either American or Russian spacecraft. China’s space agency, however, built several key systems on its own, and in some ways the Shenzhou is technologically superior to the Soyuz.

3) Blood samples tests, saliva samples tests, cheek swabs tests, psychological and fitness tests, and follow-up tests
