At the age of seven, while his friends were spending their allowance on things like candy and toys, Jose Adolfo Quisocola was busy saving money for basic purchases. To try to get his peers (同龄人) to do the same, the boy from Peru came up with the idea of an eco-bank, the Bartselana Student Bank, which allows kids of all ages to become financially independent while also helping the environment.
Set up in 2012, the bank is the world’s first bank for kids. To become a member, a kid has to bring in at least 5 kilograms of solid waste and set a savings goal. Once accepted all bank “partners” are required to deposit at least one additional kilog ram of recyclables on a monthly basis and observe other requirements, such as attending financial education and environmental management workshops.
The waste accumulated is sold to local recycling companies, which, thanks to Jose’s efforts, pay a higher-than-market rate for everything brought in by the bank members. The money received is placed in the personal account where they collect until the savings goal is reached. The account holder can then withdraw the money, or choose to leave it and make it
conti nue to grow for a bigger target. “At the beginning, my teachers thought I was crazy or that a child could not undertake this type of project,” Jose recalls. “They did not understand that we are not the future of the country but its present. Luckily, I had the support of the school headmaster and an assistant in my class.”
The boy’s efforts paid off, and by 2013, the bank had over 200 members, who brought in one ton of recyclable waste. Today, the eco-bank, which now has the support of several local institutions, boasts ten educational centers. They are designed to teach over 3,000 students, aged 10 to 18, to become financially independent, use their money wisely, and help the environment.
Not surprisingly, Jose’s efforts have earned him several national and international awards. On November 20. 2018, Jose won Children’s Climate Prize, which comes with a medal and $5.500 in prize money and is given to a child or youth who has accomplished an extraordinary achievement for the climate or environment.

Chinese cuisine is widely known a nd enjoyed all around the world. Who doesn’t long for a favorite Chinese dish? But there is one interesting concept concerning Chinese food which is almost unheard in the West, and which is becoming increasingly ignored by the youth of the East- the ancient custom of tonic food.
Tonic food is food which is consumed to improve one’s health or avoid sickness. For instance, it was once the custom for new mothers to eat a sesame (芝麻) oil hotpot every day for the first month after giving birth. It was believed that this dish would benefit the muscles, reduce pain, improve circulation, stimulate sweating, and warm the body. Some foods, such as goat meat and spinach(菠菜), are seen as “hot”, while others, such as Chinese cabbage and radishes (小萝卜) are seen as “cold”.One should be careful not to eat too much of either “hot” or “cold” food. However, how much “hot” or”cold” food one should eat depends on the time of the year, how the food is prepared and what it is prepared with, and the individual’s health.
The custom of employing tonic food for a healthier life also influences the catering industry. Chinese herbal medicines, such as the wolfberry (枸杞子), can be found on many a restaurant menu, either added to fruit tea or as a beneficial addition to a dish. These herbs attract customers, such as overworked office staff, in need of a modest pick-me-up.

Thomas Cheatham had planned to study Latin during his time at Hebron High School in Texas. But when he learned that the school district was going to offer a Mandarin(普通话) class, he quickly changed his mind.
“I thought Mandarin would be more beneficial than Latin,” said Cheatham, who is now in his second year of studying the language.
He speaks Mandarin to order food at Chinese restaurants and can read social media posts from his Chinese-speaking friends. While it’s a difficult language to master, the high school junior, who plans to study computer engineering, thinks it will be important for his career. “Chinese is a good language to know, especially with China becoming a growing power,” he said.
Many experts agree that proficiency(熟练) in a language spoken by a billion people worldwide will give American students an edge in the global economy.
“People are looking at China as our next economic competitor, and interest in Mandarin is growing fast,” said Marty Abbott, director of the American Council(议会) on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. “We’re seeing it in all parts of the country.”
Abbott predicts that as many as 100,000 students are now studying Mandarin in public and private schools throughout the US. She said the US government has designated (指定) Mandarin as an “important needs” language and provides professional development p rograms for teachers. “Our government wants to increase our language ability for national security and economic competitiveness,” Abbott added.
At the same time, the Chinese government is spreading knowledge of the Chinese language and culture through Confucius Institutes set up in many US states. For example, the Confucius Institute at the University of Texas in Dallas has been the home of a Confucius Institute for 10 years. It sponsors Confucius Classrooms at 21 local public and private schools,
where tens of thousands of students are learning Mandarin.
12.Why did Thomas Cheatham decide to study Mandarin instead of Latin?
A.Mandarin was easier to learn than Latin.
B.Mandarin could be helpful to his future career.

D.Mandarin could enable him to study computer engineering.

You will also need to work hard to make sure people know who you are and why they should vote for you.(你也需要努力来确定人们知道你是谁,知道为什么选你)。
F. To win over voters you need to reach out to as many voters as possible.(为了赢得选票你需要接触尽可能多的投票人)上下句联系紧密,两句中的need to(需要…)和also need to(还需要…)
Make sure you know what the position does, and what you will be able to do once you get there.(确保你知道职位的职能,确保你去了那儿你知道自己能做什么)。
Your network can also help with more practical activities, such as designing and making posters and encouraging their classmates to vote for you.(你的人脉网络也可以帮你处理更多实践活动,例如设计,制作海报,在同学那儿为你拉票)可知,本段主要讲让竞选者建立人脉网络。
故选A项。
You and your campaign team should make posters, T-shirts, and other items that will let other students learn your name even if you don’t get to talk to them.(你和你的竞选团队要制作海报,T恤和一些能让其它同学知道你名字的东西,即使你不和他们交谈)G. The most important is to include your name and the position on everything you make.(最重要的是要把你的名字和职位印在你们制作的每样东西上),前句提到制作东西和让别人记得你的名字,后句立刻谈到把名字印在制作的东西上,这两句承接自然,符合逻辑。
故选G项。
Get people familiar with you so that they trust you enough to give you their vote.(让人们熟悉你,因此他们就会足够信任你然后把选票投给你)。
D. Speak to as many people
as you can throughout the school.(尽可能多得与全校的人交流)与下句承接自然:因为和别人交流,然后才能让别人熟悉你并且投票给你。
