And so I celebrate Fridays. After dropping my son off at school I had to Starbucks to pick up a coffee treat of one type or another. Then instead of driving straight home I take a long route through the most beautiful roads I can find. I see footballs being passed on lawns, hamburgers being thrown on grills (烤架), and parties everywhere swinging into action. The other day I came out from the doctor's office happy over a positive prognosis (预断). Seeing the signs of spring around me, flowers, birds, sunshine, I was suddenly ready to celebrate. My mind rebelled. "What are you doing It's Tuesday! Coffee treats are reserved for Fridays!" Why should Fridays be any more special than any other day of the week Why waste six days while waiting to celebrate on the seventh Minutes later I was walking back to my car with a big smile on my face and a coffee in my hand.A small victory, to be sure, but it's also an accurate example of how many of us live our lives. We're waiting for conditions to be right before weallow ourselves to enjoy our time here on earth. Maybe when we finally graduate from college and get a job it will be time to celebrate, or perhaps when our babies are old enough to be in school all day. We'll celebrate when the car is paid off, or enjoy life when we're finally able to retire. What if we moved a little of that "Friday feeling" into our rainy-day Mondays, our dull Tuesdays and our mid-week Wednesdays (1)A.you must spend more time achieving it.B.Surely our lives would be much happier as a result.C.It seems as if the whole world is celebrating Friday!D.But suddenly I realize how ridiculous that line of thinking was! E.Find an excuse to celebrate and start sending out those invitations. F.I headed for the coffee bar that was located just around the corner. G.And in that waiting we waste so much of life and happiness that can be found in our Todays.(2)A.you must spend more time achieving it.B.Surely our lives would be much happier as a result.C.It seems as if the whole world is celebrating Friday!D.But suddenly I realize how ridiculous that line of thinking was! And the very group who have the time to benefit from the fun summer has to offer may not have the funds to do so. The solution A summer job. The concept of students and younger members of society being gainfully employed over the summer period is not a new one. And there are opportunities out there for those who want to earn. In many cases, the jobs only pay minimum wages, which may only help you out. But the money is not the only thing that's gained.Indeed, when talking about their experiences of summer jobs, people said they got "invaluable training" and learnt skills such as punctuality, tolerance, and the importance of hard work. These opportunities are thought to be so important that the UK government has placed 20,000 summer job vacancies on its Find a Job website. The percentage of young people working while studying has more than halved since 1997, falling from 42% to 18% in 2023. Those are the findings of a UK government report on the death of the Saturday job. Ester McVey believes this is because young people are choosing to focus more on education rather than earning extra money.(1)A.Summer and Saturday jobs prepare young people for successful careers in later life, teaching vital soft skills.B.Students take summer jobs mainly to cover their tuition and this practice is highly appreciated by their parents.C.That said, holidays, festivals and time spent with friends cost money. D.This move comes at a time of apparent need.E.Soft skills are so essential to students' future career that they have to take summer jobs to acquire them.F.Vacancies can range from roles as boring as fry cook, to seasonal work at a theme park.(2)A.Summer and Saturday jobs prepare young people for successful careers in later life, teaching vital soft skills.B.Students take summer jobs mainly to cover their tuition and this practice is highly appreciated by their parents.C.That said, holidays, festivals and time spent with friends cost money.E.Soft skills are so essential to students' future career that they have to take summer jobs to acquire them.F.Vacancies can range from roles as boring as fry cook, to seasonal work at a theme park.(3)A.Summer and Saturday jobs prepare young people for successful careers in later life, teaching vital soft skills.B.Students take summer jobs mainly to cover their tuition and this practice is highly appreciated by their parents.C.That said, holidays, festivals and time spent with friends cost money. This documentary follows four different families over six months as they struggle with unemployment. Cory knew he had to help any way that he could. He founded an organization named "C the Difference". The first step of his charity was to advertise. Using his own money, Cory had orange bracelets (手链) made. Now, he has sold the bracelets. A lot of people who are willing to donate bought them. "We've gotten donations from $5 to $500," Cory said. "Every dollar really helps."Since founding the organization "C the Difference", Cory has gotten the word out through e-mail and social media. He has managed to get upwards of $7,500, and the amount will keep rising each month. For Cory, his work is truly rewarding, and he loves knowing that people less fortunate than him are really benefiting from all the donations. Once he said, "I was in the pantry (食品室) one time when a woman was taking food, and she was grateful for what I was doing. That made me feel great."Cory's work has been truly remarkable. These past years he was recognized for "C the Difference" and was a recipient (获得者) of the New York State Prudential Spirit of Community Award. Cory was honored when he found out the news, and even more shocked when he found out that he was one of only 102 winners out of the 28,000 applicants. As a recipient, Cory got to travel to Washington D.C. with the other winners. There are bright things in Cory's future. First, he wants to keep doing well in school. "I think school is really important to be successful in life." In addition, Cory wants to keep "C the Difference" going through high school. "I am continuing to get donations, and to get younger kids and my peers involved to help each month."(1) After watching the documentary, Cory _____.A.set up a charity organization B.found a job in Long Island C.donated money immediately D.felt the documentary interesting (2) Cory tried to raise enough money by _____.A.wearing a ring and a bracelet B.phoning to his friends C.spreading the word out D.collecting from his classmates(3) Cory felt _____ after he knew he was given an award. A.embarrassed and surprised B.interested and delighted C.honored and shocked D.ashamed and frightened(4) We can infer from the passage that Cory will _____.A.travel in Long Island alone B.stop raising moneyC.study in Washington D. C. D.go on his charityWhen I was in school, the class I dreaded most was my eighth grade art class. The teacher put down my every attempt at completing an assignment. I simply couldn't produce art the way she wanted it. Luckily, I'd already proven myself in other creative areas. Yet, that art teacher was successful in convincing me that I had no talent for painting, drawing, or anything related to them. Imagine my surprise when I published my nature photography and became a volunteer art teacher! Unfortunately, my story is all too familiar to many people who come through my workshops and practice. Even more unfortunately, the vast majority of people were so discouraged in childhood that they cut off the creative impulse (冲动) in most areas of their lives. Their teachers, parents, or classmates convinced them they had no talent, so they gave up. The pain of failure was simply too great. Why have we forgotten creativity is an experience, not a result Let's consider why we express creativity in first place. To be creative is to be human. Everything we've at our disposal (处理) is the result of someone's creative expression and willingness to take a risk. Even so, for creativity to flower and feel free of encumbrance (累赘), it needs to be about the joyful moments spent creating, not just about what we've to show for those moments. Whatever pattern you need to break, try to make it about the pleasure and not about the outcome. Therefore, I'd urge you to curb your perfectionism not enthusiasm! Perfectionism is the leading killer of artistic expression. Relax a little and bring back your childlike nature when you create. Children instinctively (本能地) know how to give over to the joy—until someone teaches them otherwise! Let your creation be whatever it wants to be. See if it can lead you rather than the other way around. Let your unconsciousness come through, and let the expression of yourself be beautiful regardless of how it compares to anything else. After all, it's yours, and no one but you could create it!(1) What made the author give up his dream of art (no more than 15 words)(2) What does the third paragraph mainly tell us (no more than 10 words)(3) Please explain the underlined word "curb" in English. (no more than 5 words)(4) According to the passage, what is necessary for a creative person (no more than 10 words)(5) Do you think you are more creative as a student Please give an example. There was one particular time m my life when this became real to me.I always believed that my parents had a good marriage, but gradually the strain(拉紧) on my mom and dad's relationship was quite evident. However, I was not prepared for the day when Dad had decided to leave. All that I could think of was that I was going to become a product of a divorced family. I kept telling myself that it wasn't going to happen. The night before he left, I stayed up in my room for a long time, I prayed and I cried and I wrote a long letter to my dad. I told him how much I loved him and that I would always and forever be his Krissie (i)Noodles. As I folded my note, I stuck in a picture of me with a saying I had always heard: "Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a daddy." Early the next morning, as my dad left our house, I slipped my letter into one of his bags. Two weeks later, my mother told me that they decided that there were things that the both of them could and would change and that their marriage was worth saving, " Well, Dad said that when he read your letter, it made him cry. It meant a lot to him and I have hardly ever seen your dad cry. After he read your letter, he called to ask if he could come over to talk. Whatever you said really made a difference to your, dad."A few days later my dad was back. We never talked about the letter. I guessed that it became a secret between us.1. Fortunately, there are a few badgers(獾)… oh, well, actually, not for long as the British government have just decided to kill them too! But why?Badgers are fascinating nocturnal (夜晚活动的) creatures, living underground. They're extremely brave, fighting off larger animals such as bears and wolves. The problem is that some badgers carry "bovine tuberculosis" (bTB) - an infectious disease caused by the bacterium M. Bovis which can cause TB in some other animals, including cattle. For farmers, this is a serious issue, because they usually keep a large number of cows together to raise. In 1998 in the UK, almost 6,000 cows were killed to control the disease. And in 2010, more than 30,000 animals were destroyed. Bovine TB costs the UK about £100 million per year. And some believe that the disease could end up costing the economy £9 billion over the next 40 years if nothing is done about it.Experts say that badgers are responsible for about 50% of the infected cattle, So, after much debate, the government has agreed to kill badgers.Of course, many are against the measure. They daim that killing the badgers in controlled zones wouldn't work because badgers from neighboring areas would simply move in and become infected too. Furthermore, the number of cattle in one spot is usually very large. They believe that the way cattle are raised intensively, and transported around to lots of different farms during their lives is probably the biggest cause of the spread of the disease,5. Why does the UK government want to kill badgers?A. Because a disease connected with badgers has caused a big loss,B. Because badgers are responsible for all the bTB infected cattle.C. Because badgers are very easy to become infected with bTB.D. Because cattle are often with badgers which may carry bTB.6. Some people believe that killing badgers in certain areas doesn't help becauseA. the disease will still exist there with all the cattle infected.B. badgers are often transported around to lots of different farms.C. the government doesn't have a good knowledge of the disease.D. badgers nearby would occupy where the killed badgers once lived.7. What' s the main idea of the passage?A. A lot of people are against killing badgers for some reasons.B. A large sum of money has been spent controlling the disease.C. Very few wild animals exist in the UK these days except badgers.D. The UK government has decided to kill badgers to control the disease.8. (3)Can trees talk? Yes—but not in words. Scientists have reasons to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First a willow tree(柳树) attacked in the woods by caterpillars(毛毛虫) changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so terrible that the caterpillars got tired of the leaves and stopped eating them. The even more astonishing, the tree sent out a special vapour — a signal causing its neighbours to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be always in words. We can talk to each other by smiling, raising our shoulders and moving our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar(花蜜) for honey. So why shouldn’t trees have ways of sending messages?1. From the passage we know that caterpillars _______.A. like willow treesB. enjoy eating fallen leavesC. can talk to other caterpillarsD. can send out a special vapour2. Caterpillars will stop eating willow tree leaves which _______.A. have a chemical change and become tastelessB. have a pleasant tasteC. are being attackedD. are communicating3. 高一英语暑假作业阅读试题第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)AHave you ever done something that was really dangerous just because you thought it was safe? Maybe you did a dangerous trick (杂耍动作) on your bicycle or skateboard because you were wearing a helmet (头盔) and thought you couldn’t get hurt. The psychology (心理) of this sort of behavior is called the Peltzman Effect, named after Sam Peltzman, professor of economics at the University of Chicago. Peltzman believes that those moments when people think they are the safest are the times when they act most dangerously.Peltzman said that people drove more dangerously when they wore seat belts (安全带). Driving a large four-wheel drive vehicle has a similar effect on drivers’ behavior. Because drivers of large vehicles sit up higher and can see better, they feel they can make better judgments when they drive. They are better protected in accidents, so they act more dangerously. This makes driving more hazardous to other drivers. The Peltzman Effect isn’t just limited ( 限于) to driving. In 1972, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) passed a law requiring child safety caps on most medicine bottles. The safety caps were designed to prevent children from accidentally taking the medicine, especially painkillers such as aspirin. Requiring safety caps sounded like a greatidea, but there was an unexpected side effect. Because the safety caps are so hard to take off, some people leave them off altogether. Worse, some parents leave the bottles where kids can reach them because they feel that it is safe because of the cap. A study on the Peltzman Effect showed that more than 3,500 children have been harmed by aspirin because of the safety caps. The Peltzman Effect describes how we’ re likely to take more risks and act more dangerously w hen we feel safest. What’s more, the effects of these behaviors can be quite different from whatwe expect.1. What is the Peltzman Effect?A. People feel safest when they are under protection.B. People behave less safely when they feel safe.C. People who act dangerously are likely to be together.D. Something that seems dangerous turns out to be safe.2. What does the underlined word “hazardous” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Expensive.B. Interesting.C. Important.D. Dangerous.3. Why do some people leave the safety caps of medicine bottles open?A. The caps can’ t be opened easily.B. The caps don’ t work at all.C. The bottles without caps are less attractive to kids.D. The bottles are out of the reach of children.4. What would be the best title for the text?A. Types of Decision MakingB. Unsafe Safety MeasuresC. Different Behaviors of People in DangerD. People’ s Fear of Taking RisksBI had dressed quite nicely for my first day as a student at St. Anne’s College of Further Education. In celebration of this new beginning, I had changed my unusual clothes to formal clothing.Like many young people my age, I was under the impression that the best way to show your personality was by wearing the kind of clothing that my mother considered was not fit to be seen in public. But for my first day as a student I had made an effort to look what my mother called ‘respectable’.There were fifteen of us, sitting in the theatre hall, while the head of the drama department, Mr Wilson, gave us a warm welcoming speech. To my horror (恐惧), he then invited us to say why we had decided to do a drama course. I had no idea what I would say. The truth was that although I had a taste for unusual clothing, I was painfully shy.My worry grew as it came closer to my turn. One by one, the new students excitedly explained their reasons. Then it was the turn of a girl who I hadn’t really noticed until that moment because I was too busythinking about what I would say.‘My name’s Tracy and I’m from Blackburn’, she said, and then added no further information.Everyone smiled politely in silence but I was impressed at her bravery in saying almost nothing even under pressure (压力). I relaxed, knowing that you could get away with saying so little about yourself. It gave me confidence. After Mr Wilson at long last let us out of the hall to go to lunch, I managed to find the courage to go up to Tracy. She looked very unfriendly. Taking a deep breath, I introduced myself. To my surprise, she looked up at me and gave me a very bright, sweet smile. That was twenty-seven years ago, and although we never did become famous stars, we’re still best friends.5. Why did the author change her appearance for her first day at college?A. Her mom, who had told me before she did not allow sleepovers, explained that she did not think the kids were ready for a sleepover until the age of 10. I then started to wonder whether there actually was a “right” age for a sleepover.I remember the first real sleepover I ever had. It happened when I was about 13 and a friend of mine invited me to sleep at her house. Luckily for me, her parents were not strangers.I think I cried for 2 months straight before being allowed my first sleepover. My parents were not completely heartless, though. I was actually sick at the time and had to take medication and they were veryconcerned about that, but I still did not like them saying “no”.I remember my excitement the day before I finally got my sleepover. I could not sleep that night from the excitement. When I got there, my friend’ s house look ed so beautiful and her parents were so nice and welcoming.Unfortunately though, the number of sleepovers I had throughout my childhood can be counted on two hands. And after every one of them, I realized exactly how much I was missing. It was only as an adult, when I was studying education, that I actually learned about theimportance of sleepovers in kids’ development no matter how old they are.A sleepover is one of those things every child needs to experience on their own. It can do them a lot of good.9. The friend of the author’ s daughter __A. is less than ten years oldB. is too sick to sleep overC. has grown tired of sleepoversD. never listens to her mother10. How was the author’ s first sleepover?A. She can’ t remember it.B. It was really boring.C. She thinks it was enjoyable.D. It was a painful experience.11. Even many famous people, including singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, basketball player LeBron James, and former U.S. President George W. Bush, took part. Why did they do such a strange thing? Those in the Ice Bucket Challenge all helped raise awareness (意识) and money to fight amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a deadly disease. It is also known as Lou Gehrig’ s disease, after a famous baseball player who had it. It destroys neurons (nerve cells) that control muscle (肌肉) movement. Each year, about 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed (诊断) with ALS. The disease leads to the inability to move. Many people die two to five years after learning they have it. Right now, there’s no right treatment for ALS. But the Ice Bucket Challenge may help lead to one.“Before the Ice Bucket Challenge, few people knew about this terribledisease,” Jonathan Ling said. He is one of the scientists at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. His team was unable to complete its research without the money raised through the Ice Bucket Challenge, Ling says. Through their research, Ling and his team discovered that a protein (蛋白质) is damaged in most ALS patients. The scientists also found that nerve cells with these damaged proteins die quickly. But when the scientists put a new protein that acted like the damaged one into the nerve cells, the neurons came back to life!Thank s to the team’ s research, experts believe they may be one step closer to a treatment that slows down or even stops ALS. Still, more research needs to be done, Ling admits. With that in mind, the ALS Association is promising that the Ice Bucket Challenge will continue every August until a good treatment is found.12. What can we learn about ALS?A. No one knows how to treat the disease.B. It is also named after a singer.C. People will die a few days after they have it.D. It can make people lose the ability to hear.13. What might be Ling’s attitude to the Ice Bucket Challenge?A. Worried.B. Doubtful.C. Uninterested.D. Thankful.14. According to the text, Ling’ s team __A. knows little about ALSB. is now short of moneyC. has made some progressD. needs more researchers15. What would be the best title for the text?A. How the Ice Bucket Challenge startedB. The Ice Bucket Challenge and ALSC. Jonathan Ling, great ALS researcherD. But with her soft voice the judges were not sure if she spelled the word with the letter A or E. 16 By now, the girl knew she had misspelled the word. But instead of lying and telling the judges she had said the correct letter, she told the truth that she had said the wrong letter. 17As the girl walked off the stage, the entire audience stood on their feet clapping to applaud her honesty. Later, dozens of newspaper reporters wrote about this 11-year-old girl’s cour age and honesty, even when it cost her the contest. 18Probably the biggest test of our character and honesty is what we would do if we knew we would never get caught. This young girl could easily have lied, and nobody would have known it but her. But th at’s just it: She would know she did wrong. 19This young girl was strong and smart enough to prize her own conscience and character more than the prize from a spelling contest. Her respect for herself was more important than any respect others might give her for winning a contest. She knew she would have to live with herself and the choice she made at the moment. 20 .A. As a result, she lost the contest.B. she won the contest.C. It’s been said, “If you cheat, you make yourself cheap.”D. The judges wanted to give her another chance.E. 我的暑假第十五天:(3)Mark, a young person, tells me he wants to be a writer. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there's a big difference between “being a writer” and writing。

In most cases these people are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours alone at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want to write,” I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”The reality is that writing is a lonely, private and poor—paying affair. For every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never rewarded(报答)。

When I left a 20—year job in the U. S. Coast Guard to become a writer,I had no hopes at all。

What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bath room。

I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a real writer. After a year or so,however,I still hadn’t got a break and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell a story that barely made enough to eat。

2023年高一暑假话题阅读天天练:日常活动(含答案)2023年高一暑假话题阅读天天练:日常活动(共5题)一、阅读理解题(共5题)High school in the United States starts too early. Given teenagers' sleep patterns, the ideal school start time could be as late as 11: 30 a.m.—when many high school students have already finished half a school day and are eating lunch.Researchers from Harvard and Oxford wrote about this new finding in a recent article in the journal Learning. Media, and Technology. In the article, Paul Kelley supposed that, given when kids and teenagers are biologically conditioned to wake up, 10-year-olds should start school at 8 a.m. 16-year-olds should start between 10 a. m. and 10:30 a.m., and 18 year-olds should start between 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.There's been lots of research done on sleep and performance in school—but this article thinks that school should start even later than most proposals for a later start time call for. Teens aren't lazy-adults need to adjust. This isn't laziness—sleep patterns are a biological necessity. Reviewing evidence from studies around the world, the researchers think that starting school later would help students learnmore, perform better on tests, and even make teenagers less annoyed. When the Minneapolis Public Schools moved their start time from 7:15 a.m. to 8:40 a.m., students liked the change and reported that "attendance, achievement, behavior, and mood improved."Parents were positive, too. 92 percent said they liked the change, and parents reported that their kids were easier to live with when they weren't getting up so early. At the US Air Force Academy, where students were randomly assigned to classes with earlier and later start times, students who started earlier performed worse all day long on those days. The researchers consider that this is partly cultural, and that getting up early is still seen as a virtue. That's wrong, they write: "A common belief is that adolescents are tired because they choose to stay up too late, or are difficult to wake in the morning because they are lazy. Educators tend to think that adolescents learn best in the morning and if they simply went to sleep earlier, it would improve their concentration…The truth is that adults need to be educated."(1) What does the passage mainly argue aboutA.The time to start high school.B.The performance of teenagers.C.The sleep patterns of the teenagers.D.The common belief of adolescents.(2) From Paul Kelley's research, people can conclude _____.A.the earlier the children get up, the cleverer they will become B.the elder the children are, the later they should start learning C.the more time children spend learning, the better they will be D.the later children wake up, the less knowledge they can get(3) Which is NOT the benefit of starting school later in Paragraph 3 A.Gaining more knowledge. B.Getting higher marks.C.Making mood better. D.Doing less homework.(4) How did the parents think of starting lateA.The students are losing a virtue. B.The adults need to be taught. C.The students benefit from that. D.The adults become lazier.(5) What should the students do to perform well in school, according to the educatorsA.They should have the wonderful virtue.B.They should develop the common belief.C.They should become lazier and lazier.D.They should get habits of sleeping early.Healthy See, Healthy DoVisit the grocery store on an empty stomach, and you will probably come home with a few things you did not plan to buy. But hunger is not the only cause of additional purchases. The location of store displays (摆放) also influences our shopping choices. The checkout area is a particular hotspot for junk food. Studies havefound that the products most commonly found there are sugary and salty snacks. A 2023 study in the Netherlands found that hospital workers were more likely to give up junk food for healthy snacks when the latter were more readily available on canteen shelves, for example. In 2023 Norwegian and Icelandic researchers also found that replacing unhealthy foods with healthy ones in the checkout area significantly increased last-minute sales of healthier foods. It has been working with more than 1,000 store owners to encourage them to order and promote nutritious foods. "We know that the stores are full of cues (暗示) meant to encourage consumption," says Tamar Adjoian, a research scientist at the department, "Making healthy foods more convenient or appealing can lead to increased sales of those products."Adjoian and her colleagues wondered if such findings would apply to their city's crowded urban checkout areas, so they selected three Bronx supermarkets for their own study. Then they recorded purchases over six three-hour periods in each store for two weeks.Of the more than 2,100 shoppers they observed, just 4 percent bought anything from the checkout area. Among those who did, however, customers in the healthy lines purchased nutritious foods more than twice as often as those in the standard lines. The findings were reported in September in the Journal of Nutrition Education andBehavior. The potential influence may seem small, but Adjoian believes that changing more checkout lines would open customers' eyes to nutritious, lower-calorie foods. Health department officials are now exploring ways to expand healthy options at checkout counters throughout New York City.(1)A.These foods give people more energy.B.They bought unhealthy foods 40 percent less often.C.And it may make or break some healthy eating habits.D.The supermarkets began to offer nutritious, lower-calorie foods. E.These findings caught the attention of New York City Department of Health.F.They replaced candies and cookies with fruits and nuts near the checkout counter.G.And a few studies have suggested that simply swapping in healthier options can change customer behavior.(2)A.These foods give people more energy.B.They bought unhealthy foods 40 percent less often.C.And it may make or break some healthy eating habits.D.The supermarkets began to offer nutritious, lower-calorie foods.Health.F.They replaced candies and cookies with fruits and nuts near the checkout counter.G.And a few studies have suggested that simply swapping in healthier options can change customer behavior.(3)A.These foods give people more energy.B.They bought unhealthy foods 40 percent less often.C.And it may make or break some healthy eating habits.D.The supermarkets began to offer nutritious, lower-calorie foods. He told me to study outside Italy where there were more possibilities to find a job once I finished university. But I said no, scared of living alone in a different country with a different culture, with a different language, and above all, far from my family and friends. So I decided to go to university in Italy and I chose the one in Rome, my city, which is one of the most ancient universities in the world, studying Communication Science because it was the most common and the most fashionable major six years ago (and still now). At that age, I w anted to become a sports journalist, but with the passing time, my opinions and my ideas started changing and I understood that I didnt like my choice. At that time, I realized that at 18 years old, everyone feels mature to decideabout his own future. Everyone thinks that the advice that parents try to give is wrong and we are able to decide alone, maybe just with the help of our friends who are in the same situation. This is the worst thought that we can think. However, I graduated last December with the pride of my parents and I decide, with their help, to come to Toronto and study English. Here I am living the best experience I have ever lived. I often think, “If I had known that living alone in a different country and studying something I like were so nice and interesting when I was 18, I would have listened to what my father told me six years ago.” I try to regret nothing about my choices I have made in my past, but I just think that now I am mature to ask my parents and to listen to them because they have more experience and they know better than me what is right and what is wrong.56. What can we learn about the writer from the passage?A. He went to Toronto in order to become a sports journalist.B. He studied English when he was in a universityin Rome.C. He followed his parents advice when choosing a university.D. He is enjoying his stay in Toronto and his study of English.57. The underlined word “mature” in the passage means______.A. having a developed mindB. good and ripeC. confident enoughD. carefully decided58. I think it is very exciting to go to new places, experience different situations and see new things. Here’s what I have come up with about why my travel is so interesting. To start with, whether we know it or not, every day is filled with anxiety about things that we don’t need to worr y about in the first place. Going to new places is a good chance to escape from our everyday worries. For example, after a whole day at work, I’m often physically and mentally tired and start to worry about things. However, the moment I get on the train or bus to my next destination(目的地) I forget all my tiredness and worries.Next is one of the most important things in travel: movement. I always take along books to read on my train trips, but in the end, only about five pages or so ever get read, because I just look at things out of the window. Just the ability to move is very enjoyable. Movement also means that we are going to new places and seeing new things. But why is that important? Because experiencing new situations, people and ideas can help us to learn about new things and grow. I have never gone on a trip and come back as the same person; I have always changed and grown through travel. So take every type of trip you can, at every chance you get, and you will not only experience more of the world, but will become a happier person with rich experiences.1.The passage is mainly about .A.how to have a comfortable lifeB.how to prepare for a tripC.why travel is so excitingD.why some people are tired of travelling2.Why doesn’t t he author read much on train trips?A.Because he doesn’t like reading on the trainB.Because his attention was taken away by the beautiful view.C.Because he is too busy working to read.D.Because he is so tired that he can’t read.3.People who travel to new places will ________.①learn new things②become happier③get more experiences④have more chances to readA.①②③④B.①②④C.②③④D.①②③4.The author develops the passage mainly by________.A.giving explanationsB.giving examplesC.listing numberD.following the natural time order8、 In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities (品质) of character, especially understanding, honesty and reliability (可靠).I look for understanding in a friend, which I think is of great importance.A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. He puts himself in the otherperson's place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener. At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults (过错) in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. A special friend is someone with whom we can have fun.We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other.A good friend has a good sense of humor, too. He likes to laugh with me. That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.When I meet someone who is reliable, honest, and understanding, I know I've found a friend!1.Which of the following qualities the writer thinks is greatly important in choosinga friend?A.understanding.B.honesty.C.reliability.D.a sense of humor.2.If you have fair weather friends, _______.A.they will give you all that they have when you need helpB.you will be refused when you get into troubleC.you will become richD.you can be sure that you get real friends3.This passage mainly discuss_______.A.the qualities of a friendB.where to choose friendsC.how to get along with friendsD.the importance of having a friend七选五9、根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

高一英语暑假阅读天天练 第十九天

高一英语暑假阅读天天练 第十九天

我的暑假第十九天:(3)Can trees talk? We had a wonderful time. Perth is famous for its beautiful wild flowers. In spring every year Perth has the wild flowers’ exhibition. After visiting Perth, we spent the day in the countryside. We sat down and had a rest near a path at the foot of a hill. It was quiet and we enjoyed ourselves. Suddenly we heard bells ringing at the top of the hill. Yong Liang, two years old, is the first giant panda raised from birth in the zoo. Last month zoo keepers found the panda was suffering from serious anemia(贫血), calling for urgent blood transfusion.
The best way, according to the zoo’s experts, to save Yong Liang from anemia would be to transfuse blood from another panda. But it was the breeding season for giant pandas, and such a transfusion would be very difficult.
But the experts found that there exits a close consanguinity(血缘) between giant pandas and black bears, and so they decided to try to take blood from black bears in the zoo and transfuse it to
Yong Liang.
With the help of hospitals and the Beijing Blood Donor Station, they made an experiment which proved that the red blood cells in the blood of black bears can be used.
