Choose the best word A ,B orC to fill the gap 1-10.1. A attending B going C meeting2. A ideas B sugar C money3. A department B company C group4. A work B charge C responsible5. A to B in C about6. A run B control C produce7. A speak B know C be8. A do B see C make9. A socialising B work C extra10. A talk B win C successLife’s all about making connectionsTo you, networking might mean (1) A a conference or trade fair event to meet new client or partners.Or it could be the coffee break at work where you share (2) A with colleagues in other departments. But nowadays networking has become an event in itself. For example, Pricewaterhouse Coopers offer its female staff a formal networking (3) C called PwCwomen. With 900 members, it organises events ranging from informal drinks evenings to coaching events. Tina Hallet, who is (4) C for the group, says that she got involved (5) B networking because ‘I’d got to a reasonably senior level and I wanted to help other people to maximise their potential.’You don’t have to be sen ior to (6) A a network though. Vicky Wood and Sally Hopkins had the idea for the City Girls Network when they first moved into London’s corporate world andwondered how to get to (7) B other women. ‘We couldn’t find anything for people with no experience. So we thought we’d start our own.’From twelve friends meeting regularly, it rapidly grew to 250 members from many different organisations. It’s a great way to (8) C useful contacts and bring in potential business.Fiona Clutterbuck is co-chair of a network for the bank ABN AMRO. ‘Women tend to think of networking as (9) A and give it low priority.’ But given the chance, women will network –as the bank’s last ‘speed networking’ event demonstrated. ‘With over 100 women and men, it was a great (10) C . It is amazing how many people you get to meet from different parts of the organisation.’2.1-1 Read the article about Xerox. What benefits and incentives does the article mention for employees at Xerox?Anwser:There are four benefits and incentives below:1) Training and staff development.2) Opportunities for promotion.3) A final-salary pension scheme.4) A reward and recognition scheme.2.1-2 Choose the best answer, A, B or C for question 1-5 about the Xerox article.( B ) 1 The journalist of this article thinks thatA staff at Xerox are not telling the truth about the company.B Xerox offers great benefits to staff.C people haven’t worked at Xerox long enough to know if it’s a good company.( A ) 2 Where does the company tend to find its new managers?A From staff.B On training courses.C Only from graduates.( C ) 3 Why doesn’t Kim Moloney have her own desk?A Because she isn’t important enough.B Because there isn’t space at head office.C Because she often travels and is away on business.( B ) 4 As well as recognising its staff though promotion, XeroxA gives cash bonuses.B provides a number of perks.C gives unpaid leave to take trips of a lifetime.( C ) 5 One common feature of Xerox staff is that they tendA to work hard.B to get promoted.C not to change employer. Is working for Xerox too good to be true? What a lovely place Xerox is to work! Kim Moloney, a client services executive, can’t say enough nice things about her employer.‘It’s a very special environment,’she says.‘People describe Xerox as a family and I was amazed at the number of people who have worked here for so long.’It’s tempting to take Moloney’s comments with a pinch of salt, especially considering that when you’ve been working somewhere for only two years, as she has at Xerox, everyone seems old and established. But there’s truth behind her enthusiasm.Take Carole Palmer, the group resources director. She joined Xerox in 1978 as a temp and has been in her present role for seven years. ‘Xerox has been good to me over the years,’ she say s. ‘It has supported me through qualifications ... and last yearI took part in the vice-presidentincumbent programme.’Human resources is taken seriously at Xerox, Palmer says, and the company has a policy of promoting from within (which would explain Mo loney’s amazement at her colleagues’ longevity). The company takes on only fifteen to twenty graduates each year and Moloney was part of an intake who joined having already acquired a couple of years’ work experience. She started as a project manager for Xerox Global Services before moving into sales. Now her responsibility is to ‘grow and maintain customer relationships’.Moloney is based at the head office in Uxbridge. ‘It’s great in terms of working environment,’she says. ‘We’ve just got a new provider i n the canteen and …we have brainstorming rooms and breakout areas.’Much of Moloney’s role is visiting clients, so she doesn’t have a permanent desk at head office. ‘I’m a hot-desker, which is good because you get to sit with different people in the hot-de sk areas. And you’re given a place to store your things.’Head office staff numbers between 1,200 and 1,500 people, Palmer says. The company has four other main offices in the UK. The nature of the organisation, which encompasses sales and marketing, global services (the biggest division), development and manufacturing, means that the opportunities at the company vary from service engineers to sales roles and consultants.Perk include a final-salary pension scheme and various discount schemes. The reward and recognition scheme is a little different, and rather nice: ‘Each manager has a budget everyyear to recognise and reward staff,’ Palmer says. ‘It can be in the form of a meal for two, or a bottle of wine. It can be up to £1,000. There’s the recognition, and then there’s putting money behind it.’Moloney, however, likes the non-cash rewards. ‘Xerox takes care of all its staff but it also recognises the people who put in the added effort,’ she says. ‘It offers once-in-a-lifetime incentive trips, and recently I organised a sailing trip for my team.’The idea of working abroad with the company appeals to her, and she says that her career goal is to be part of the senior management team. Here’s another employee, it would seem, who is in it for the long haul.3.1-1 The table below lists things to remember if you are setting up a new businessas a soleWe wanna hold your handTake a big piece of business sense, add some entrepreneurial spirit and voilà! You have a franchise. Starting up a franchise could be a very clever move for those who want to run their own show but don’t have the experience or the desire to set up in the dangerous and often short-lived world of the sole trader. But it’s vital to know what you’re getting into. Franchising is ‘the granting of a licence by one person (the franchisor) toanother (the franchisee) which entitles the franchisee to trade under the trademark or trade name of the franchisor and to make use of an entir e package.’So is the main concept behind a franchise that of a compromise between setting up on your own and working for a company ? ‘Absolutely not,’says Dan Archer, head of marking at the British Franchise Association. ‘That’s a ludicrous over-simplific ation. It is running your own business, but it’s taking away some of the risk and bringing in the support of other people.’ He points out that only 0.9% of franchises fail, compared with the majority of individually owned businesses. But being a franchisee is unlikely to satisfy the most entrepreneurial. It doesn’t suit people who don’t want to follow the system. William Ewbank, the head of franchise sales at Domino’s Pizza, says, ‘If you’re massively entrepreneurail this isn’t for you. It’s a discipline, a club with rules. There is some independence –our franchisees can charge their own price although we’re strict on menu content. It’s running a business with help.’Astrid Patil, a new Domino’s franchisee, abandoned a career as a solicitor to set up a franchise with her husband. The way she reasons it is this: ‘Rather than putting all your time and effort into working for someone else, put it into your own business.’Leaving a well-paid, well-respected profession to run a pizza shop at the age of 31 has worke d for Patil. There’s a good profit margin and the business has seen growth.Of course if you do decide to go it alone and start a business from nothing, you could always branch out into franchising.Archer says there is now a growth in the number of younger companies that are trying to launch new franchises. ‘Anincredible number of individuals are coming in at a younger age with lower capital, getting a return and investing in bigger ventures.’ If the initial fee can be raised it’s an ideal opportunity to stretch those entrepeneurial wings.3.1-2 Now read about another small business. Complete the text with the underlined words in bold from the article on franchising.Tags that can end misery of lost luggageGlobalbagtag was (0) set up six years ago by husband-and-wife team Chris and Alison Truelove on their return from a holiday in Australia. The couple decided to (1) launch , which sells secure tags which travellers attach to their luggage. They started to (2)charge £9.95 per tag in the first year, followed by a £2.95 subscription (3) fee for the following years. Customers activate the tag online with their home address on an online database. If luggage is lost, the person who finds it can log on to the Globalbagtag website and report the missing items.Mr Truelove said: ‘We have seen a huge (4) growth in orders as travellers realise they cannot rely on the airlines to look after their bags. It is actually a very simple (5) concept .’Globalbagtag is now planning to (6) branch out into stickers for items including mobile phones, MP3 players, keys and laptops.4.2 Read tips 1-7 below on how to delegate. Write in the missing heading A-G.A Tailor work to the individualB Be postiveC Give incentivesD Define the expectations and objectivesE Delegate complete tasksF Let goG Avoid misunderstandingHow to delegateNew managers often find it difficult to delegate the tasks they used to do. But getting others to do what you did so well is a key to good management.1A It should be challenging and make use of their specific skills that you may not have.2E This is much more satisfying for the person delegated to than bits and pieces. If people feel they have ownership of a whole manageable project, they will usually rise to the challenge.3C Don’t start by saying ‘I know you’re really busy and don’t have time for this, but …’Explain why the job is important and why you have chosen them. Also explain what the rewards are —possibly financial or psychological. 4D Specify what results are needed, the deadline, and how often the employee should update you.5G After you have briefed the person, ask them to explain back to you what they’re going to do to ensure the instructions are clear.6F Don’t check up on them. Make yourself available to answer questions but allow them space to work on their own.7B Give lots of praise, helpful feedback and constructive criticism. It boosts confidence and saves time next time.5.1 Read about a company that deals with art in the workplace. For each question, there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the ONE that you think is the best answer.Passage 1Not so long ago almost any student who successfully complete a university degree or diploma course could find a good career quite easily. However, those days are gone, even in Hong Kong, and nowadays graduates often face strong competition in the search for jobs.Job seekers first have to make a careful assessment of their own abilities. One area of assessment should be of their academic qualifications, which would include special skills within their subject area. Graduates should also consider their own personal values and attitudes, or the relative importance to themselves of such matters as money, security, leadership and caring for others. The second stage is to study the opportunities available for employment and to think about how the general employment situation is likely to develop in the future. After studying all the various options, they should be in a position to make informed comparisons between various careers.Job application forms and letters should, of course, be filled in carefully and correctly, without grammar or spelling errors. When graduates are asked to attend for interview, they should prepare properly by finding out all they can about the prospective employer. Dressing suitably and arriving for the interview on time are also obviously important. Interviewees should try to give positive and helpful answers and should not be afraid to ask questions about anything they are unsure about. This is much better than pretending to understand a question and giving an unsuitable answer. There will always be good career opportunities for people with ability, skills and determination; the secret to securing a good job is to be one of them.11. In Para.1, the sentence “... those days are gone, even in Hong Kong ...”suggest that _______.A. in the past, finding a good career was easier in Hong Kong than elsewhereB. nowadays, everyone in Hong Kong has an equal chance of finding a good careerC. it used to be harder to find a good job in Hong Kong than in other countriesD. Hong Kong is no longer the good place for finding jobs12. The word “relative”in Para. 2 could best be replaced by “_______”.A. familyB. comparativeC. considerableD. slight13. The advice given in the first sentence of Para.3 is to _______.A. find out what jobs are available and the opportunities for future promotionB. examine the careers available and how these will be affected in the futureC. look at the information on, and probable future location of, various careersD. study the opportunities and the kinds of training that will be available14. The word “prospective”in Para. 5 is closest in meaning to “_______”.A. generousB. reasonableC. futureD. ambitious15. In Para.5, the writer seems to suggest that _______.A. interviewees should ask a question if they can’t think of an answerB. pretending to understand a question is better than giving an unsuitable answerC. it is better for interviewees to be honest than to pretend to understandD. it is not a good idea for interviewees to be completely honest in their answersPassage 2It is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times and to blame them for most of the misunderstanding between them. They have always complained, more or less justly, that they are possessive and dominant; that they do not trust their children to deal with crisis; that they talk too much about certain problems —and that they have no sense of humor, at least in parent-child relationship.I think it is true that parents often underestimate their teenage children and also forget how they themselves felt when young.Young people often irritate parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles, in entertainers and music. This is not their motive. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then, it turns out that their music or entertainers or vocabulary or clothes or hairstyles irritate their parents; this gives them additional enjoyment. They feel they are superior, at least in a small way, and that they are leaders in style and taste.Sometimes you are resistant, and proud because you do not want your parents to approve of what you do. If they did approve, it looks as if you are betraying your own age group. But in that case, you are assuming that you are the underdog(处于劣势者): you can’t win but at least you can keep your honor. This is a passive way of looking at things. It is natural enough after long years of childhood, when you were completely under your parents’control. But it ignores the fact that you are now beginning to be responsible for yourself. If you plan to control your life, cooperation can be part of that plan. You can impress others, especially your parents, into doing things the way you want. You can impress others with your sense of responsibility and initiative, so that they will give you the authority to do what you want to do.16. This passage is primarily meant for _______..A. parentsB. teenagersC. educatorsD. psychologists17. The first paragraph is mainly about _______.A. the teenagers’criticism of their parentsB. the misunderstandings between teenagers and their parentsC. the parent’complaints about their childrenD. the dominance of the parents over their children18. Teenagers tend to have strange clothes and hairstyles because they _______.A. want to irritate their parentsB. have a strong desire to be leaders in style and tasteC. have no other way to enjoy themselves betterD. want to show their existence by creating a culture of their own19. Teenagers do not want their parents to approve of whatever they do because they _______.A. have a desire to be independentB. feel that they are superior in a small way to the adultsC. are not likely to win over the adultsD. have already been accepted into the adult world20. To improve parent-child relationships, teenagers are advised to be _______.A. obedientB. independentC. responsibleD. cooperativePassage 3The fridge is considered a necessity. It has been so since the 1960s when packaged food first appeared with the label: “store in the refrigerator”.In my fridgeless Fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthily. The milkman came daily, the grocer, thebutcher, the baker, and the ice-cream man delivered two or three times a week. The Sunday meat would last until Wednesday and surplus(剩余的) bread and milk became all kinds of cakes. Nothing was wasted, and we were never troubled by rotten food. Thirty years on, food deliveries have ceased; fresh vegetables are almost unobtainable in the country. The invention of the fridge contributed comparatively little to the art of food preservation. A vast way of well-tried techniques already existed —natural cooling, drying, smoking, salting, sugaring, bottling ...What refrigeration did promote was marketing —marketing hardware and electricity, marketing soft drinks, marketing dead bodies of animals around the globe in search of a good price.Consequently, most of the world’s fridges are to be found, not in the tropics where they might prove useful, but in the wealthy countries with mild temperatures where they are climatically almost unnecessary. Every winter, millions of fridges hum away(不断地嗡嗡作响) continuously, and at vast expense, busily maintain an artificially-cooled space inside and artificially-heated house —while outside, nature provides the desired temperature free of charge. The fridge’s effect upon the environment has been evident, while its contribution to human happiness has been insignificant. If you don’t believe me, try it yourself, invest in a food cabinet(橱柜)and turn off your fridge next winter. You may miss the hamburgers, but at least you’ll get rid of that terrible hum.21. The statement “In my fridgeless Fifties childhood, I was fed well and healthily.”(Para.2) suggest that _______.A. the author was well-fed and healthy even without a fridge in his fiftiesB. the author was not accustomed to using fridges even in his fiftiesC. there was no fridge in the author’s home in the 1950sD. the fridge was in its early stage of development in the 1950s22. Why does the author say that nothing was wasted before the invention of fridges?A. People would not buy more food than was necessary.B. Food was delivered to people two or three times a week.C. Food was sold fresh and did not get rotten easily.D. People had effective ways to preserve their food.23. Who benefited the least from fridges according to the author?A. Inventors.B. Consumers.C. Manufacturers.D. Traveling salesmen(巡回推销员).24. Which of the following phrases in Para.5 indicates the fridge’s negative effect on the environment?A. “Hum away continuously”.B. “Climatically almost unnecessary”.C. “Artificially-cooled space”.D. “With mild temperatures”.25. What is the author’s overall attitude toward fridges?A. Neutral.B. Critical.C. Objective.D. Compromising.Quiz 2Part I Use of EnglishDirections:Directions:In this part, there are 10 incomplete dialogues. For each dialogue, there are four choices marked A,B,C and D. For each question, there are four choices marked A,B,C,and D. Choose the ONE that you think is the best answer.Passage 1To understand how Americans think about things,it is necessary to understand “the point”. Americans mention it often:“Let’s get right to the point”,“My point is ... ”,“What’s the point of all this?”The “point” is the idea or piece of information that Americans suppose is,or should be,at the center of people’s thinking, writing, and spoken comments. Speakers and writers are supposed to “make their points clear”, meaning that they are supposed to write clearly the idea or piece of information they wish to express.People from many other cultures have different ideas about “the point”. Africans traditionally tell stories that express the thoughts they have in mind, rather than stating “the point” clearly. Japanese traditionally speak indirectly, leaving the listener to figure out what the point is. Thus, while an American might say to a friend,“I don’t think that coat goes very well with the rest of your outfit”, a Japanese might say,“Maybe this other coat would look even better than the one you have on.” Americans value a person who “gets right to the point”. Japanese are likely to consider such a person insensitive if not rude. The Chinese and Japanese languages are characterized by vagueness and ambiguity(模糊). The precision(精确)and directness Americans associate with “the point” cannot be achieved,at least not with any grace,in Chinese and Japanese. Speakers of those languages thus have to learn a new way of reasoning and expressing their ideas if they are going to communicate satisfactorily with Americans.11. By “the point”,Americans mean_______.A. the idea or information in their mindB. the most important idea or informationC. what they think, write and speakD. what they wish to express12. Compared with people from many other cultures,Americans are_______..A. direct and honestB. clear and talkativeC. impolite and rudeD. traditional and silent13. A typical American seems to be_______ to a typical Japanese.A. sensitive and rudeB. insensitive but not rudeC. sensitive instead of rudeD. insensitive and even rude14. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. You are expected to state your idea clearly when speaking to an American.B. Telling stories to express their ideas is a traditional way of Africans.C. Japanese often imply their disapproval with polite words.D. Chinese and Japanese languages are hard to understand because they are not clear.15. A conclusion can be made that_______.A. Americans and Africans cannot communicate satisfactorilyB. Africans and Japanese cannot communicate satisfactorilyC. Misunderstanding may arise when Americans communicate with ChineseD. Chinese and Japanese will certainly get on well with each otherPassage 2Your success in your studies will also depend upon your motivation(动机). This need or desire to achieve a certain goal can make the difference between success and failure. Motivationcan come from two sources:from inside of you or from outside of you. In the first case, motivation comes from your hopes and expectations, from your desire to do something or to be someone. Study purposes that result from personal inner desires are individual, and various. If you have not already done so,you should think carefully about what you hope to gain from your studies, and why. You should set a goal and direct all your study efforts toward reaching it. A goal of this kind is important because it will determine the direction and degree of your motivation for study. Not everyone is highly motivated from within and no one is continuously motivated from within. Fortunately there is another source of motivation:from outside. In education the most obvious kind of outside motivation is grades. For many students, course grades are an immediate,short-range motivation for study. This is one of the reasons for examinations and grades, but they must not become a goal in themselves. Grades help to motivate you from day to day,but they are only small, artificial steps to your ultimate goal. It would be wrong to set grades as your only ambition.A textbook like this cannot provide you with motivation; that must come from yourself. But as an encouragement,it is useful to know that good study habits depend upon good motivation. And good study habits are important because they help you get more done in less time. It is not a matter of how much you study; more important is how well you study.16. Inside motivation comes from_______.A. your need and desireB. your hopes and expectationsC. your desire to do something or to be someoneD. both B and C17. Study purposes_______.A. are different from person to personB. are personal inner desiresC. share some common pointsD. should be carefully made18. If you haven’t set a goal in your studies,_______.A. you will most probably become a failureB. you will never be a good studentC. you may lose direction and lack motivationD. you won’t have good study habits19. According to the passage, why are examinations and grades necessary in education?A. Because they can make the difference between success and failure.B. Because they can motivate many students to study harder.C. Because they can check what you have gained from your studies.D. Because they are small, artificial steps to an ultimate goal.20. If you want to be an efficient learner, you must_______.A. have clear study purposesB. be always motivated from both inside and outsideC. set grades as your ambitionD. have good study habitsPassage 3Although America is such a huge country, traveling is really very quick and easy. There are three ways to get across the country without a car:planes, trains and buses. Air travel is the most expensive of the three but in many ways the easiest and most comfortable. There are hundreds of flights a day crossing the country, and it is easy to make a reservation(预订). Traveling by train is cheaper than by airplane. But it costs more than by bus and there are few passenger (旅客)trains. On the trains there are dining cars and bars where meals are served quickly. If you are spending the night on the train you can pay for a “roomette” which is a small roomwith a bed and a toilet. The most inexpensive way to travel is by bus. There are fast bus services between cities, for example, the Greyhound Bus Service. You can buy special tickets that allow you unlimited travel for a certain period of time. In this way you can stop along the way to visit the places that interest you most.If you need to travel long distances frequently, however, you’ll have to decide which way is the most suitable for you. Hardly anyone can positively enjoy sitting in a train for more than a few hours. It is almost impossible to take your mind off the journey. Reading is only a partial solution. During the day, sleep comes in snatches(瞬间). At night, when you really wish to go to sleep, you rarely manage to do so. Inevitably you arrive at you destination almost exhausted. Long car journeys are even less pleasant, for it is quite impossible even to read. On motorways you can,at least, travel safely at high speeds, but the greater part of the journey is spent on narrow, bumpy roads that are crowded with traffic.By comparison, trip by sea offers a great variety of civilized comforts. You can stretch your legs on the spacious decks(甲板),play games, swim, meet interesting people and enjoy good food. However,if the sea is rough, you are likely to get seasick. Even if you travel in ideal weather, sea journeys take a long time.21. If you want to travel easily and comfortably, you should choose to go_______.A. by seaB. by planeC. by trainD. by bus22. Compared with air travel, traveling by train_______.A. is cheap but comfortableB. is not so easily availableC. offer better and quicker mealsD. requires you to pay for a “roomette”23. Which of the following is the advantage of bus service?A. It’s the cheapest and least comfortable way of traveling.B. It allows passengers to travel between different cities.C. It sells special tickets that make it convenient for passengers to take.D. It travels safely at high speeds.24. The second paragraph mainly talks about_______.A. the way of traveling you had better chooseB. what you can do on your journey to kill the timeC. reading and sleep on your journey when you travel by train and by busD. the disadvantages of traveling by train and by bus25. Which of the following is NOT mentioned about trip by sea?A. You can find more space to stretch yourself.B. You have different choices to enjoy yourself.C. You should have enough time and prepare for seasickness.D. You should never travel in bad weather.

(30 points, 2 points each)AMost of us grow up taking certain things for granted. We tend to assume that experts and religious leaders tell us “the truth”. We tend to believe that things advertised on televisions or in newspapers can’t be bad for us.However, encouragement of critical thinking in students is one of the goals of most colleges and universities.Few prof essors require students to share the professors’ own beliefs. In general, professors are more concerned that students learn to question and critically examine the arguments of others, including some of their own beliefs or values. This does not mean that professors insist that you change your beliefs, either. It does mean, however, that professors will usually ask you to support the views you express in class or in your writing. If your premises (前提)are shaky, or if your arguments are not logical, professors personally point out the false reasoning in your arguments. Most professors want you to learn to recognize the premises of your arguments, to examine whether you really accept these premises, and to understand whether or not you draw logical conclusions. Put it this way: Professors don’t tell you what to think; they try to teach you how you think.31. In the first paragraph, the writer tries to tell us that people ____.A. easily accept certain things without a second thoughtB. grow up through learning certain things in lifeC. are forming their views during their growthD. have strong beliefs in authorities while getting old32. It was large, fairly out of date, run ( 经营), like its parent company in London, by a group of relatives. Being only a member of the store for a short time, I was in a very fortunate position. The others, particularly the older members of the store, were naturally asked to produce good sales figures. I was more of an observer. If I made a sale, I was pleased, but if I didn't, I would not be blamed. I was really there to observe and learn, and as I had no interest in making a position in the furniture business, I wasn't too diligent (勤奋) about that either. One salesman in late middle age once expressed his insecurity (不安全感) by scolding me of trying to steal one of his customers (雇客). Nothing could have been further from the truth, but he demanded that I go to the stockroom (货仓) with him to settle the matter. He was very small and thin, but to my surprise he started dancing about among the carpets and closets working his arms wildly and calling on me to 'put them up'. I couldn't put anything up ---I was too busy rolling on a four-foot six - inch spring mattress (弹簧垫子) , helpless with laughter. Finally he saw the joke too, and we went off to the members' store for a conciliatory(和解)cup of tea. Several days later, I finally left the store. Thank God!36. It is the financial center of the U.S.A, exerting a significant infl uence upon the world’s economy. Hetty Green, who was born in 1835, was nicknamed the Wizard (奇才)of Wall Street. She became almost a legendary figure in Wall Street, because she made a lot of money buying and selling shares in companies.Hetty Green began making money when her father died and she inherited all his money. By investing it wisely, she soon built up her fortune to over 100 million dollars. However, she hated spending money on herself or on her family. Actually, she hated spending money on everything except buying shares. She was so mean that when her son Edward broke his leg, she would not send for a doctor. She did not want to have to pay a doctor’sbill. She refused to send her son to a good hospital. Instead, she took the boy to a free charity hospital. There he did not get very good treatment and, to save his life, he had to have his leg cut off. Still his mother would not pay for proper hospital treatment. She sent for a doctor who cut off the boy’s leg in her sitting room. It’s incredible, isn’t it?31. The 19th-century discovery of what appeared to be geometric designs cut across the surface was taken as evidence. The lines were thought to have been a system of canals that had been built to irrigate the surface. It is now clear that “canals”—perhaps the most spectacular geologic features of Mars — are natural valleys where ancient rivers once flowed.Another fragmented idea concerns the planet’s seasonal changes in color. Once attributed to the rapid spread of some life-form, these shifts are now known to develop from the movement of fine dust in the atmosphere.By the close of the 20th century none of the many experiments conducted by spacecraft had ever found persuasive evidence of life. Nevertheless, speculation continued over the existence of some form of life, in either the present or the past. In 1996 scientists discovered organic compounds and minerals in a meteorite(陨石), consisting of Martian rock, that collided with Earth around 11,000 B.C. These compounds suggest that Mars may have been inhabited by organisms more than three billion years ago.36. Why did people in the 19th century believe the existence of intelligent life on Mars?A. Because the surface of Mars seemed to be geometric.B. Because the lines were drawn across the surface of the planet.C. Because a system of canals was thought to be there.D. Because it was the Martians that built the canals.37. The “canals” on Mars have proved to be ______ according to the passage.A. the minor geologic characteristic of MarsB. natural valleys on the surface of MarsC. rivers that have kept flowing since ancient timesD. a system that irrigates the whole surface38. What were the Mars’ seasonal changes in color believed to be?A. The natural changes on the planet.B. The seasonal cycles.C. The movement of some life form.D. The storm of dust in its atmosphere.39. How is the 1996 discovery related to the possible existence of organisms on Mars?A. The meteorite containing organic compounds is part of Mars.B. A Martian rock struck Earth about 11,000 years ago.C. The organisms came back to life after the collision with Earth.D. The inhabiting organisms appeared more than three billion years ago.40. How many arguments in this passage lead to the belief of the existence of lifeon Mars?A. Two.B. Three.C. Four.D. Five.Passage 3Have you ever wondered why different animals or pests have their particular colors? Colors in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.Birds, especially seagulls, are very fond of locusts, but birds cannot easily catch locusts because locusts change their colors together with the change of the color of crops. When crops are green, locusts look green. But when crops are ripe, locusts take on exactly the same brown color as crops have. Some other pests with different colors from plants are usually easily found and eaten by their enemies. So they have to hide themselves in terror for lives and appear only at night. If you study the animal life in any part of the world, you will find the main use of coloring is to protect themselves. Bears, wolves and other beasts move quietly through forests. They are usually invisible to the eyes of hunters, because they have the color much like the barks of trees. An even more strange act remains to be noticed. A kind of fish living in seas can send out a kind of very black liquid when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over, its enemies cannot find it, and it immediately swims away. Thus, it has existed up to now though it is not powerful at all.41. This passage mainly talks about ______.A. the change of color in locustsB. the protective coloration of animals and pestsC. how a certain sea fish protects itselfD. animals or pests can dye themselves different colors42. Locusts are not easily wiped out by their enemies because______.A. they are powerful enoughB. they are dangerous to their enemiesC. they take on the same colors as cropsD. they fly extraordinarily fast43. The pests that have different colors from plants usually appear at night because______.A. birds take their rest when night comesB. their enemies can easily find them and eat themC. they have the habit of coming out in darknessD. it’s easy for them to destroy plants in darkness44. Bears and wolves have the same colors as barks of trees because ______.A. they fear other beastsB. they prefer brown or grey colorsC. they enjoy walking through forests quietlyD. the colors help prevent themselves from being noticed45. A certain fish living in seas has lived through millions of years because ______.A. it is the most powerful in the seaB. it can swim much faster than any other fishC. it can send out a kind of liquid which makes its enemies unable to find itD. it can send out a kind of liquid which can kill its enemiesPassage 4High school dropouts(辍学者)earn an average of $ 9,000 less per year than graduates. Now a new study dispels a common belief why they quit. It’s much more basic than flunking out(不及格).Society tends to think of high school dropouts as kids who just can’t cut it. They are lazy, and perhaps not two bright. So researchers were surprised when they asked more than 450 kids who quit school about why they left.“The vast majority actually had passing grades and they were confident that they could have graduated from high school.”John Bridgeland, the executive researcher said. About 1 million teens leave school each year. Only about half of African-American and Hispanic(美籍西班牙的)student will receive a diploma, and actually all dropouts come to regret their decision. So,if failing grades don’t explain why these kids quit, what does? Again,John Bridgeland: “The most dependable finding was that they were bored.”“They found classes uninteresting; they weren’t inspired or motivated. They didn’t see any direct connection between what they were learning in the classroom to their own lives, or to their career aspirations.”The study found that most teens who do drop out wait until they turn sixteen, which happens to be the age at which most states allow students to quit. In the US,only one state,New Mexico, has a law requiring teenagers to stay in high school until they graduate. Only four states: California, Tennessee, T exas and Utah, plus the District of Columbia, require school attendance until age 18, no exceptions, another researcher, says raising the compulsory attendance age may be one way to keep more kids in school.“As these dropouts look back, they realize they’ve made a mistake. And anything that sort of gives these people an extra push to stick it out and it through to the end, is probably helpful measure.”New Hampshire may be the next state to raise its schoolattendance age to 18. But critics say that forcing the students unwilling to continue their studies to stay in school misses the point-the need for reform. It's been called for to reinvent high school education to make it more challenging and relevant, and to ensure that kids who do stick it out receive a diploma that actually means something.46. Most high school students drop out of school because__.A. they have failing gradesB. they take no interest in classesC. they are discriminated againstD. they are lazy and not intelligent47. According to the passage, which state has a law requiring school attendance until they graduate?A. New HampshireB. UtahC. New MexicoD. The District of Columbia48. In the last paragraph, the writer is trying to_________.A. analyze the reason why students quit schoolB. suggest raising the compulsory attendance ageC. raise awareness of reforming high school educationD. wish to make laws to guarantee no education50. From the passage,we can infer the following EXCEPTthat_.A. the grades of most dropouts at school were acceptableB. on average dropouts cannot get good jobsC. classes don't appeal to dropoutsD. about 500, 000 high school dropouts are black and SpanishPassage 5People living on parts of the south coast of England face a serious problem. In 1993,the owners of a large hotel and of several houses discovered, to their horror, that their gardens had disappeared overnight. The sea had eaten into the soft limestone cliffs on which they had been built. While experts were studying the problem, the hotel and several houses disappeared altogether, sliding down the cliff and into the sea.Erosion(侵蚀)of the white cliffs along the south coast of England has always been a problem but it has become more serious in recent years. Dozens of homes have had to be abandoned as the sea has crept farther and farther inland. Experts have studied the areas most affected and have drawn up a map for local people, forecasting the year in which their homes will be swallowed up by the hungry sea.Angry owners have called on the Government to erect sea defenses to protect their homes. Government surveyors have pointed out that in most cases, this is impossible. New sea walls would cost hundreds of millions of pounds and would merely make the waves and currents go further along the coast, shifting the problem from one area to another. The danger is likely to continue, they say, until the waves reach an inland area of hard rock which will not be eaten as limestone is. Meanwhile,if you want to buy a cheap house with an uncertain future, apply to ahouse agent in one of the threatened areas on the south coast of England. You can get a house for a knockdown price but it may turn out to be a knockdown home.51. What is the cause of the problem that people living on parts of the south coast of England face?A. The rising of the sea level.B. The experts’ lack of knowledge.C. The washing-away of limestone cliffs.D. The disappearance of hotels, houses and gardens.52. The erosion of the white cliffs in the south of England .A. will soon become a problem for people living in central EnglandB. has now become a threat to the local residentsC. can be stopped if proper measures are takenD. is quickly changing the map of England53. The experts’ study on the problem of erosion can .A. warn people whose homes are in dangerB. provide an effective way to slow it downC. help to prevent it from worseningD. lead to its eventual solution54. It is not feasible to build sea defenses to protect against erosion because ________.A. house agents along the coast do not support the ideaB. it is too costly and will endanger neighboring areasC. the government is too slow in taking actionD. they will be easily knocked down by waves and currents55. According to the author, when buying a house along the south coast of England, people should ________________.A. take the quality of the house into considerationB. guard against being cheated by the house agentC. examine the house carefully before making a decisionD. be aware of the potential danger involvedPassage 6Normally a student must attend a certain number of courses in order to graduate, and each course which he attends gives him a credit which he may count towards a degree. In many American universities the total work for a degree consists of thirty-six courses each lasting for one semester. A typical course consists of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two semesters each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not in fact done as a regular practice. For every course that he follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded, and the record is available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this imposes a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activity in student affairs. Elections to positions in student organizations arouse much enthusiasm. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating has to appear before a student court. With the enormous numbers of students, the operation of the system does involve a certain amount of activity. A student who has held one of these positions of authority is much respected and it will be of benefit to him later in his career.56. Normally a student would at least attend ________ classes each week.A. 36B. 20C. 12D. 1557. According to the first paragraph an American student is allowed ________.A. to live in a different universityB. to get two degrees from two different universitiesC. to live at home and drive to classesD. to take a particular course in a different university58. You may even have entered the shop just to be kept from a sudden shower of rain. You are careless of your surroundings. The desire to pick up a book with an attractive dust-jacket(书的护封皮)is great, although you might end up with a rather dull book. This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is, I think, the main attraction of a bookshop. You can wander round suc h places to your heart’s content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will come to you with the “necessary” greeting: “Can I help you,Sir?”You needn’t buy anything you don’t want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished browsing(浏览). Then, and only then, are his services necessary. Of course, you may want to find out where a particular section is, but when he has led you there, the assistant goes away carefully and looks as if he is not interested in selling a single book.It is very easy to enter the shop looking for a book on ancient coins and to come out carrying a copy of the latest best-selling novel. Apart from running up a huge account, you can waste a greatdeal of time wandering from section to section.1. According to the author, a bookshop is popular mainly because .A. people can often be kept from the rainB. most people are book –loversC. people might have opportunities to escape the realities of everyday lifeD. people can choose a book as a gift2. Which of the following statements is NOT true, according to the author?A. You are likely to buy a book you didn’t intend to.(二)Lawn tennis is a good sport, being based on the ancient game of court tennis, which probably came up in Egypt or Persia some 2500 years ago. Major Walter Wingfield thought that something like court tennis could be played outdoors on lawns, and in December 1873, heintroduced his new game, which he called Splrairistike, at a lawn party in Wales. The sport became popular very rapidly, but the strange, difficult name disappeared almost at once, being replaced by the very simple and logical term “lawn tennis”.By 1874 the game was being played by British soldiers in Bermuda, and in the early months of that year a young lady named Mary Outerbridge returned from Bermuda to New York, bringing with her the equipment necessary to play the new game. With the help of one of her brothers, she laid out a court on the grounds of the Staten Island Cricket and Baseball Club, and there, in the spring of 1874, Miss Outerbridge and some of her friends played the first game of lawn tennis in the United States. And just two years later, in 1876, the first United States, lawn tennis tournament was held-at Nahant hear Boston.1. In another, failure may be viewed as a step toward success. The “spider-story” is often told as an example of this. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a cave from the English. He watched a spider making a web. Bruce is said to have gained confidence from this sight and to have gone on to defeat the English. Edison, too, the inventor of the light bulb, made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one.So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were the conditions right? Were you on top form yourself? What can you change so that things will go right the next time?Second, is the goal you’re trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question: “If I do succeed in this, where will it get me?” This may help to prevent failure in the things you shouldn’t be doing anyway. The third thing to bear in mind about failure is that it’s a part of life. Learn to“live with yourself” even though you may have failed. Remember, “You can’t win them all.”1. Robert Bruce was mentioned in the passage to show that _________.A. nature will help us if we are hard-workingB. people who fail are not lonelyC. one can learn something from failureD. confidence is important for one to achieve success.2. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. Take failure for granted.B. Avoid things that are beyond your power.C. Find out what has gone wrong.D. It can be learned from the passage that_________________.A. we should try everything to avoid failure.B. failure is always an unpleasant thingC. we should learn lessons from our failureD. failure will destroy our confidence5. This passage is mainly about ________________.A. two great menB. two sides of failureC. the right attitude toward failureD. ways to avoid failure(四)Asked to give a speech, most of us are shy and embarrassed. Yet, we can conquer theuneasiness. If a few simple rules are followed, anyone can speak well in public.First of all, the speech should be well prepared. In this way, we are comfortable with what we are going to say and are able to build up our confidence. There are three things that we should know when we are preparing our talk. The first one is to know what we are trying to do and what we want to tell our audience. The second thing is to know who our audience will be. If we are talking to children, then our talk should be simple; if we are speaking to older people, then our speech can be a little more complex(复杂),and so on. The third thing we should know is the length of time we will be speaking for, and then we should make sure that we stick to that time.It has been said that the main objective of any speech is to bring both an idea and an audience together. If we remember that, and speak clearly and honestly in a friendly fashion, we should be able to speak in public without any real problems at all.1. According to the author, anyone can speak well in public if they .A. are brave enoughB. prepare every dayC. follow some simple rulesD. get over their shyness2. A speaker should not talk longer than the time planned.D. All of the above.(五)Many people believe that Americans love their cars almost more than anything else. It may be true. From the time youngsters(小孩)become fourteen years old, they are likely to dream of having their own cars. Many young people work after school during their last year of high school in order to buy a car learning to drive and getting a driver’s license may be one of the most exciting times of a young person’s life.People who almost never go to a doctor when they are sick will take their cars to a repairman at the first sign of a problem. Those who do not like to work around the home on Saturdays may devote most of that day to washing and waxing(打蜡) their cars. For some families it is not enough to have one car. They often have two or three---one for work and one for recreation(娱乐)。

Reading ComprehensionPassage 1There are many different cultures in the world, and in each of them the children must learn a great many things that are expected of everyone who participates effectively in that culture. These things are taken for granted by everyone who shares the culture. Indeed, the children begin to learn them before their linguistic skills are far enough developed to understand a verbal description for what they are learning. This kind of learning has sometimes been called “imitation”, but that is much too simple an ex planation for the complex processes that go on when a child learns what is normal and expected in his own community. Most of the rules are communicated to the child non-verbally, and he adapts to them as if no otherpossibilities existed. But why do people read newspapers?Five hundred years ago, news of important happenings – battles lost and won, kings or rulers overthrown or killed – took months and even years to travel from one country to another. The news passed by word of mouth and was never accurate. There are weather reports, radio, television and film guides, book reviews, stories and of course advertisements. There are all sorts of advertisements. The bigger ones are put in by large companies to bring attention to their products. They pay the newspapers thousands of dollars for their advertising space, but it is worth the money, for news of their products goes into almost every home in the country.
