If you do, you must be an optimist(乐观主义者). a leader. an acive person who enjoys life. people and excitement. Do you prefer greys and blues? Then you are probably quict. shy. and you would rather follow than lead You tend to be a pessimist (悲观主义者) . At least. this is what psychologists tell us. and they should know. because they have been seriously studying the meaning of colours preference, as well as the effect that colours have on human beings. They tell us. among other facts. that we do not choose our favourite clour as we growup-we are born with our preference. If you happen to love brown, you did so as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.Colours do influence our moods------there is no doubt about it. A yellow room makes mostpeople feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand, black is depressing. A black bridge over the Thames River. Near London. used to be the scene of more suicides (自杀) than any other bridge in the area-until it was repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell down sharply; perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.Light and bright colours make people not only happier but more active. The main idea of the passage is that_ .A. colours affect people's moodB. colours affect people's characterC. bright colours make people more activeD. colours preference shows people's couragePassage 2Charlotte Hollins knows she faces a battle. The 23-year-old British farmer and her 21-year-old brother Ben are fighting to save the farm from the city developers that their father worked on since he was 14. While she is confident they will succeed. she lists farming's many challenges: "You don't often get a day off. Supermarkets put a lot of pressure on farmers to keep prices down. With fewer people working on farms it can be isolating." she said. "There is a high rate of suicide and farming will never make you rich!"Oliver Robinson. 25, grew up on a farm in Yorkshire. But he never considered staying on his father and grandfather's land. "I'm sure Dan hoped I'd stay," he said. "I guess it's a nice, straightforward life, but it doesn't appeal. For young ambitious people, farm life would be a hard world." For Robinson. farming doesn't offer much in terms of money or lifestyle. Hollins agrees that economics stops people from pursuing farming rewards: "providing for a vital human need . while working outdoors with nature."Farming is a big political issue in the UK. "Buy British" campaigns encourage consumers not a buy cheaper imported foods. The 2001 "foot and mouth crisis" closed thousands of farms, stopped meat exports, and raised public consciousness of troubles in British farming. JamieOliver's 2005 campaign to get children to eat healthily also highlighted the issue. This national concern brings hope for farmers competing with powerful supermarkets. While most people buy food from the big supermarkets. hundreds of independent Farmers' Markets are becoming popular.41 . According to the passage, Farmers ' Markets are becoming popular because .A. thousands of farms are closedB. farmers are the owners of the marketsC. more people are concerned about healthy foodD. Jamie Oliver's 2005 campaigns urge people to "Buy BritisW'Passage 3No one knows exactly how many disabled people (残疾人) there arc in the word. but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada. In the United Kingdom. about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something hat happens to other people: as we get older. many of us will become less mobile. hard of hearing or have failing eyesight.Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on. the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people's attitude towards them.Disabled people face many physical barriers. Next time you go shopping or to work or visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers: prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through. so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability. not their disability, which counts.46. The first paragraph tells us that .A. the number of disabled people in India is the greatestB. there are less than 450 million disabled people in the worldC. there are more than 450 million disabled people in the worldD. the number of disabled people in India is equal to the total population of Canada47. There still exists prejudice against the disabled because of ignorance.C. Even the able-bodied might lose some of their body functions when they get older.D. The whole society should pay attention to the barriers faced by the disabled people.49. The clause "which counts " in the last paragraph means that _ .A. ability is the most importantB. disability is consideredC. disability is includedD. barrier is the most important50. It can be concluded from the passage that _A. we should try our best to prevent disablementB. we should take a proper attitude towards the disabledC. both physical and mental barriers are hard to break downD. the able-bodied will never fully understand the disabledPassage 4It is really a surprise that after hundreds of years, educationists have still failed to design anything more efficient and reliable than examinations. It is claimed that examinations test what you know, but it is common knowledge that they more often do the exact opposite. They may be a good means of testing memory, or the skills of working rapidly under extreme pressure, but they can tell you nothing about a person's true ability. As anxiety-makers. examinations are second to none. That is because so much depends on them. They are the mark of success or failure in our society. Your whole future may be decided in one fateful day. No one can show his best in worry, or after a sleepless night, yet this is precisely what the examination system expects him to do.A good education should, among other things, train you to think for yourself. The examination system however, does anything but that. What has to be learnt is laid down by a syllabus (教学大纲) . so the student is encouraged to memorize. Examinations do not motivate a student to read widely, and they do not enable him to seek more and more knowledge. Furthermore. teachers themselves are often judged by the results of their students' examinations. Consequently, they have to train their students to master exam techniques which they dislike. They most successful candidates are not always the best educated but the best trained..The results on which so much depends are often nothing more than a subjective assessment by some anonymous (匿名的) examiners. They certainly make mistakes. because they have to mark mountains of scripts (答卷) in a limited amount of time. They work under the same sort of pressure as the candidates.51. The main idea of this passage is that examinations are .A. anxiety-makersB. harmful to educationC. reliable and efficientD. good measures of memory52. It is clear that the author examinations.A. argues forB. argues againstC. is interested inD. is indifferent to53. The fate of students is decided by _ according to the passage.A. examinationB. educationC. teachingD. learning54. According to the author, the most importance of a good education is to .A. encourage students to read widelyB..teach students how to tackle examsC. train students to think on their ownD. encourage students to seek more knowledge55. Which statement is NOT mentioned in the passage?A. Examinations can make students anxious.B. The examiners might make mistakes in marking.C. Teachers ' work is .judged based on the results of examinations.D. Tools better than examinations to test students' ability have been found.Part III Cloze (10%)When I come across a good article in reading newspapers. I often want to cut and keep it. But just as I am about to do so I find the 56 0n the opposite side is as much interesting. It may be a discussion of the way to 57 in good health. or a report about 58 to behave and conduct oneself in society. If I cut the front article, the opposite one is likely t0 59 damage, leaving out half of it or keeping the text 60 the title. Therefore. I should prepare 61 I start to cut. make contributions to…(对……作出贡献)是固定搭配。
30. 【答案】B【解析】这个题最有争议了。
我认为这句话不可以直译为:诺贝尔在认识到他的人生的真正意义之前就不得不死去了。
这不仅不合情理,也很明显与作者所设置的写作背景不符。
语言是非常灵活的,我们不妨来意译:好在诺贝尔认识到了自己人生的真谛,否则他就是行尸走肉,灵魂早已死去。

Reading Comprehension (40 points)Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.Passage 1Questions 36—40 are based on the following passageTo understand how Americans think about things, it is necessary to understand “the point”. Americans mention it often: “Let’s get right to the point,” they will say. “My point is …”“What is the point of all this?”The “point” is the idea of the piece of information that Americans suppose is, or should be, at the center of people’ thinking, writings, and spoken comments. Speakers and writers are supposed to “make their points clear”, meaning that they are supposed to say or write clearly the idea of information they wish to express.People from many other cultures have different ideas about the point. Africans traditionally tell stories that express the thoughts they have in mind, rather than stating the point is. Thus, while an American might say to a friend , “I don’t think that coat goes very well with the rest of your outfit,” a Japanese might say , “Maybe this other coat would look eve n better than the one you have on .”Americans value a person who “gets right to the point.” Japanese are likely to consider such a person insensitive if not rude. The Chinese and Japanese languages are characterized by vagueness(模糊) and ambiguity(歧义).The precision and directness Americans associate with “the point” cannot be achieved ,and lest not with any grace, in Chinese and Japanese. Speakers of those languages thus have to learn a new way of reasoning and expressing their ideas if they are going to communicate satisfactorily with Americans.36. According to the passage, American expect speakers and writers to ______A. be clear about their man ideasB. give as much information as possibleC. express their personal viewsD. be honest about their true feelings37. Which of the following people will tell a story to express what they have in mind?A. AmericansB. AfricansC. JapaneseD. Chinese38. In the sentence “I don’t think that coat goes very well with the rest of your outfit”, the word “outfit” most probably means_____.A. officeB. timeC. speechD. clothes39. According to the passage, the Japanese may consider it unacceptable to be_____.A. indirectB. straightforwardC. poorly-dressedD. curious40. In order to communicate with Americans satisfactorily, speakers of Chinese need to____A. lean the language wellB. change their way of thinkingC. be careful about their choice of wordsD. explain their reasons clearlyPassage 2Questions 36—40 are based on the following passageMany young people tell me they want to be writers. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there’s big difference between “being a writer” and writing. In most cases these young people are dreaming of wealth and fame, not the long hours lonely at a typewriter. “You’ve got to want write,”I say to them, “not want to be a writer.”The reality is that writing is lonely, private and poor-paying. for every writer kissed by fortune there are thousands more whose longing is never realized. When I left a 20-year career in the U. S. Army to become a freelance writer (自由撰稿者), I had expectation at all. What I did have was a friend who found me my room in a New York apartment building. It didn’t even matter that it was cold and had no bathroom. I immediately bought a used typewriter and felt like a true writer. After a year or so, however, I still hadn’t gotten any breakthrough and began to doubt myself. It was so hard to sell story that I barely made enough to eat .But I knew I wanted to write. I had dreamed about it for years. I wasn’t going to be one of those people who gave up halfway. I would keep putting my dream to the test---even though it meant living with uncertaintyand fear of failure. This is the shadow-land of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there.41. The passage means to ______A. warn young people of the hardships that a writer has to experienceB. advise young people to give up their idea of becoming a professional writerC. show young people it’s unrealistic for a writer to pursue wealth and fameD. encourage young people to pursue a writing career42. What can be concluded from the passage?A. Genuine writers often find their work interesting and rewarding.B.A writer’s success depends on luck rather than on effort.C. Famous writers usually live in poverty and isolationD. The chance for a writer to become successful are small.43. Why did the author begin to doubt himself after the first year of his writing career?A. He wasn’t able to produce a single book.B. He wasn’t able to have a rest fo r a whole year.C. He found his dream would never come true.D. He hadn’t seen a change for the better.44. When the author began writing, he only had_____.A. a second-hand typewriter.B. a friend who helped him find a room to liveC. a cold room without a bathroomD. empty expectations of his future45. “shadow-land” in the last sentence refers to_____.A. the piece of land one often dreams aboutB. the state of uncertainty before one’s final goal is reachedC. the bright future that one is looking forward toD. a world that exists only in one’s imaginationPassage 3Questions 36—40 are based on the following passageMy friend Mike was shaking his head in disbelief. “That young woman who just waited onme ,”he said ,pointing to an employee of the fas t food restaurant where we eating , “had to call someone over to help her count out the change .the cash register(出纳机) showed her I need 99 nets ,but she couldn’t figure out how to count out the coins .”I understood Mike’s concern .What we have done in thi s country ,although unintentionally ,is to create several generations of individuals most of most of whom have no idea how to reason, how to do simple math ,how to do research ,or finally how to be creative .The reason for this is our overuse of information technology :video games, television, digital watches, calculators, and computer. information technology feeds us information without requiring us to think about it and let us perform operations without understanding them.It is time for us to take a hand look at an educational system that only teaches our children how to push buttons. Our kids can’t tell time if the clock has hands .they can use calculators but cannot add, subtract, divide or multiply. Video games have taken the place of active imaginative play .Although most of them are technically literate ,they choose not to read .They are so used to television and movies that they cannot use their imagination to stay interested in a book .It is not enough to recognize the problem. What we need is solution .the one I offer is simple to suggest , but may be impossible to carry out. We must unplug our children .If wedon’t, they will never learn how to solve problems. They will never learn basic reasoning skills and will certainly not develop creativity .Instead of filling classrooms with electronics, let’s to perform computer operations, but to figure and to figure and reason for themselves. They must see how things work and how process leads to results, they must also stretch their imagination.46. What seems to be the problem of the employee of the fast food restaurant?A. She does not know how to count coins.B. She is unable to solve simple math problem.C. She has no small change for the customers.D. She does not know how to operate cash registers47. What is the author’s and his friend Mike’s concern?A. The educational system is now creating people who can’t think for themselves.B. People now rarely do things on their own.C. Computers feed us too much information nowadays.D. The restaurant does not provide good service.48. For children to have imaginative minds, they must_____.A. be born with talentsB. be taught to read the right booksC .be dragged away from machinesD. have a large vocabulary49. What is the most probable meaning of “unplug o ur children” in the last paragraph?A. Give them freedom of enjoying themselves.B. Teach themC. Get them off TV and computer games.D. Turn off all the power in the schools.50. The conclusion of the article is that the authorbelieves_____A. electronics should have no place in classroomsB. information technology helps us to do things we do not understandC. all books benefit children more than anything elseD. information technology is new being overusedPassage4Questions 36—40 are based on the following passageAll of us communicate with one another nonverbally(不使用语言地),as well as with words. Most of the time we’re not aware that we are doing it. We gesture with elbows or a hand, meet someone else’s eyes and look away, change positions in a c hair. These actions we assume are occasional. However in recent years researchers have discovered that there is a system to them almost as consistent and understandable as language. One important kind of body language is eye behavior. Americans are careful about how and when they meet one another’s eyes. In our normal conversation, each eye contact lasts only about a second before one or both of us look away. When two Americans look searchingly into each other’s eyes, they become more intimate. Therefore, we carefully avoid this, except in suitable situations.Researchers who are engaged in the study of communication through body movement are not prepared to spell out a precise vocabulary of gestures. When an American rubs his nose, it may mean he is disagreeing with someone or refusing something. But there are other possible interpretations(解释),too. Anther example: when a student in conversation with a professor holds the older man’s eyes a little longer than is usual, it can be sign of respect; it can be a challenge to the professor’s authority; itcan be something else entirely. The researches look for patterns in the situation, not for a separate meaningful gesture.Communications between human beings would be just dull if it were all done with words.51. The main idea of this article is that________A. study of communication through body movement is a new scienceB. body movements are as important as words in communicationC. all of us communicate with one anotherD. eye behavior is the most important part in body language52. What do researchers think of body language?A. Body language can be understood and used by people in communication.B. Body language is more important than spoken language in communication.C. Body language has been discovered in recent years.D. Body language is the study of communication via body movement.53. The word“intimate” in paragraph two probably means______.A. greatB. closeC. goodD. important54. According to the passage, you make an American person feel uncomfortable if you_____.A. meet his eyesB. avoid meeting his eyesC. stare into his eyes for one secondD. look into his eyes for a long time55. The sentence “the researchers look for patterns in the situation, not for a separate meaningful gesture” means______.A. the researchers explain the meaning of a gesture according to the situation in which it is usedB. the researchers believe that one gesture has only one meaningC. the researchers think that one gesture cannot be used in different situationsD. the researchers look for patterns in textbooks to explain the meaning of a gestureV. A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. Jamie Oliver's 2005 campaign to get children to eat healthily also highlighted the issue. This national concern brings hope for farmers competing with powerful supermarkets. While most people buy food from the big supermarkets. hundreds of independent Farmers' Markets are becoming popular.41 . Some people are born withdisabilities. It is almost impossible for theable-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through. so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability. not their disability, which counts.46. The first paragraph tells us that .A. the number of disabled people in India is the greatestB. there are less than 450 million disabled people in the worldC. there are more than 450 million disabled people in the worldD. the number of disabled people in India is equal to the total population of Canada47. The examinationsystem however, does anything but that. 广东省专插本英语真题(2)广东省2009年专插本英语真题Whether it makes you a better person or not, a college education is likely to have a lasting effect on your knowledge and values. If you finish college, you will sit through 30 to 45 different courses. Even the least dedicated student is bound to learn something from these courses. In addition, students learn informally. Whether you go to college in your hometown or across the country, college will introduce you to a greater diversity of people than you're likely to have experienced before. This diversity will challenge your mind and broaden your horizons. As a result of formal and informal learning, college graduates are more knowledgeable about the world around them, more tolerant and less prejudiced, more active in public and community affairs, and, more open to mew ideas.41. It is apparent from the passage that people go to college mainly because they believe______.A. a college education will provide them with a guarantee of success in lifeB. the economy of their country can't absorb an army of untrained youngstersC. a college education will make them better qualified for a careerD. the investment in a college education can bring a higher economic return than before42. We can learn from the second paragraph that ______.43. The word "dedicated" (Line 3, Para. 3) could best be replaced by_____.A. hardworkingB. competentC. intelligentD. conservative44. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?45. This passage is primarily concerned with____.Passage 3For the most part, rapid economic development has been a favor. But there is a down side to development -- health problems such as overweight are all becoming more common, as more people take taxis to work instead of riding their bicycles, and other labour-saving devices become more popular. An increasingly fast pace of life makes it difficult for people to spend time playing sports. “I know exercise is good for your health,” a young lady said. “ But after a busy work week, the only thing I want to do is watch some TV and go to sleep.” That attitude may explain the results of a recent nationwide study, which suggested 15 percent of urban adults in China have heartproblems.Local researchers found that 31. 2 percent of elderly respondents (受访者) were getting enough exercise, but less than 9 percent of youngsters and the middle-aged got enough physical activity.Elderly people understand the importance of protecting their health. The young people, however, are busy working and use this as an excuse to avoid exercise. In fact, physica1 exercise doesn't require much time, money or a special gymnasium. People can make use of any time and any place at their convenience to take part in sports. Walking quickly, cycling, climbing the stairs and dancing are all helpful methods to improve one's health. The benefits of adding a little more activity to your life are priceless. “There is no need to be an athlete(运动员),however ,”a local doctor said. People should walk for 30 minutes a day and take part in some other physical activity three to five times a week . Local doctors and youngsters.50. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?Passage 4When he was young, Jacob Lawrence often walked more than sixty blocks from his home in the Harlem section of New York City to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Jacob wanted to be an artist, and he believed that studying the famous painting hanging in that museum would help him.The year was 1930. The depression (经济萧条) had brought hard times. As he walked through Harlem, Jacob noticed the people on the sidewalks. He looked hard at the churches, the funeral parlors and barbershops. Jacob stored those images in his mind, alongwith the images of paintings he saw in the museum.Jacob came from a poor family. His mother believed there was little chance that her son could grow up to be a successful painter. She wanted him to aim for something more practical. But Jacob's teacher in an after-school art program saw that the youngster was talented. Alston showed him how to use poster paints and crayons (蜡笔) to make masks and stage sets.As time passed, Alston let Jacob rent work space in his own studio. That was an exciting place for a young black man struggling to become an artist. Many creative people gathered there to talk about art and literature and history. From these conversations, Jacob learned that history books often ignored the accomplishments of African Americans. He decided to paint a series of pictures dramatizing the story of a black hero. He chose Toussaint, a slave from the Caribbean island of Haiti, who had helped free his people from French ruling. Many people admired Jacob's pictures, but he needed more than admiration. T o help his family, he often had to work at jobs that took him away from painting. Then something encouraging happened. The government set up the Federal Art Project to help struggling artists survive the depression, and a sculptor (雕刻家) named Augusta got Jacob a job with the project. For eighteen months, Jacob was paid a salary to paint pictures. We go to school 67 all to learn how to learn , 68 when we have 69 school , we can continue to learn. A man who really knows 70 will always be successful, because 71 he has to do something new which he has never had to do 72 , he will rapidly teach himself how to do it in the best 73 . The uneducated person, 74 , is probably unable to do something new, or does it badly. The purpose of schools, therefore, is not just to teach languages, arithmetic,Part IV Writing (15%)76.你叫王宏,将于7月份毕业。
广东专插本公共英语历年试题

专升本插班生入学考试公共课公共英语历年试题集(含标准答案)1998年广东省普通高等学校本科插班生考试英语试题Part I Reading Comprehension(40%)Passage IThe computer is a wonderful machine. It is the most important invention since the type of engine used in cars.Today it has the greatest effect on science, industry, and business, but it is being used more in education and medicine.By the end of this century it will touch the lives of everyone, even people in distant villages. It is a revolutionary invention. The oldest kind of computer is the abacus used in China since the sixth century. In the seventeenth century an adding machine was invented, but the furst large, modern computer was built in 1937.A few years later a computer could do 5000 additions per second. Now the computations are so fast that they are measured in nanoseconds(毫微秒).Today most computers have a memory. They are getting smaller and smaller, and computing faster and faster.Even in a large computer, the part that does the actual computing is about the size of the end of a finger. Computers can do all kinds of work. When someone buys something in a department store, information about the sale goes into a computer,A scientist can talk to the computer about the rocks, and the computer answers the questions.A doctor can talk to the computer and explain what is wrong with a patient. If the doctor asks why,the computer goes through its stored information and explains exactly why. When early humans began farming,it was a revolutionary change in human life.It was hundreds of thousands of years later that people developed a writing system(方法).In less than fifty years people have developed computers that can do most of the things humans can do .This could be a frightening development.1.The computer is considered a wonderful machine because_____.A.it has effect on all some other place away from the home.Since the man earned the money,he paid the bills. The money was used for food, clothes,a house, and other family needs. The man made most of the decisions. He was the boss.In the traditional marriage, the woman seldom worked away from the house. She stayed at home to care for the children and her husband. She cooked the meals, cleaned house, washed the clothes, and did other household work. Her job at home was every important. In recent years, many couples continue to have a traditional relationship of this kind. The man has a job and earns the money for the family. The woman stays at home and cares for the children and the house. Many Americans are happy with this kind of marriage. But some other Americans have a different impression of marriage and family responsibilities. There are two important differences in male and female roles now.One is that both men and women have many more choices. They may choose to marry or to stay single. They may choose to work or stay at home. Both men and women may choose roles that are comfortable for them.A second difference in male and female roles is that within marriage many decisions and responsibilities are shared. The husband and wife may choose to have children,or they may not.If they have children, the man may take care of them some of the time, all of the time,or not at all.The woman may want to stay at home and take care of the children.Or she may want to go to work.Men and Women now decide these things together in a marriage. Many married people now share these decisions and the responsibilities of their families.6.Which of the following is NOT true in the traditional marriage?A.Men worked at a job to earn money for family.B.The woman made most of decisions.C.The woman stayed at home to care plastic soft drink bottles you throw away every day can be turned into carpet or automobiles parts? That used glass bottles and aluminum cans can be turned into new ones? And that yesterday’s newspaper can be turned into tomorrow’s?It all happens because of recycling(再利用).The simple waste we throw away is a “natural resource”that, with recycling, can be used to produce a variety of new products.Unfortunately,America recycles only 10% of its rubbish, burns 10% and deposits 80% in waste desposal grounds,As a result,it is having to cope with a serious solid waste problem.Every year,Americans throw away about 160 million tons of rubbish.Of that total, plastics make up less than 8%,paper about 36%,and glass and metal about 20%,all by weight.Plastics are naturally lighter, but still, when pressed together, accout for only about 20% by volume. As a result,in the past 10 years the United States’ waste disposal grounds have decreased from about 18,500 to 6,000.In five years 2,000 more will close. In the process of finding solutions, some people have proposed to stop using plastics.Unfortunately, stop using plastics would do much harm and no good.We would lose all of the safety, health and convenience features of plastics.Besides, packaging would still be needed.A 1987 study shows what would happen if plastics were not used--the energy needed to produce other packaging, its cost, and the volume of waste collected would all rise greatly. Some Americans believe part of the a nswer to America’s waste problem lies in recycling everything from glass to metals to paper to plastic.Today, recycling is on the rise. There are now more than 1,000 waste recycling programs in the U.S.Many are beginning to recycle plastics.Right now, almost 200 companies are recycling millions of used plastic containers into toys, traffic signs, waste baskets, floor materials, and park benches.Plastics are among the easiest materials to recycle.More than 150 million pounds or 20% of all plastic soft drink bottles were recycled in 1987.11.What can’t the plastic soft drink bottles be turned into?A.Newspapers.B.Automobile parts.C.Toys.D.Traffic signs.312.Of all the rubbish in the U.S.,plastics account for_____by weight and_____by volume.A.20%; 20%B. 8%; 20%C.36%; 8%D.20%; 36%13.On average, waste plastics are_____other wastes.A.as heavy in density asB.heavier in density later time when it is needed. The information may be kept for days or weeks. However, information in short-term memory is kept for only a few seconds, usually by repeating the information over and over. The following experiment shows how short-term memory has been studied.Henning studied how students who are learning English as a second language remember vocabulary. The subjects in his experiment were 75 college students. They represented all levels of ability in English:beginning, intermediate, advanced, and native-speaking students. To begin, the subjects listened to a recording of a native speaker reading a paragraph in English.Following the recording, the subjects took a 15-question test to see which words they remembered. Each question had four choices. The subjects had to circle the word they had heard in the recording. Some of the questions had four choices that sound alike. For example, weather, whethet, wither, and wetter are four words that sound alike. Some of the questions had four choices that have the same meaning.Method, way, manner, and system would be four words with the same meaning. Finally the subjects took a language proficiency test.Henning found that students with a lower proficiency in English made more of their mistakes on words that sound alike;students with a higher proficiency made more of their mistakes on words that have the same meaning.Henning’s results suggest that beginning students hold the sound of wor ds in their short-term memory, and advanced students hold the meaning of words in their short-term memory.16.Henning made the experiment in order to study_____.A.how students remember English vocabulary by short-term memoryB.how students learn English vocabularyC.how to develop students' ability in EnglishD.how long information in short-term Today, with modern technology, the opposite is true. An engine operating under road conditions will warm up faster and nun more efficiently than the one that is idling. Idling just burns gas (on average, about a gallon an hour) .When you have a full tank of gas, park the car downhill. This will prevent any gas from coming out of the tank. Parking in areas of less or no sunlight helps prevent the gas from steaming that would occur if you parked in the hot sun. Your car will stay cooler, too, and that means less gas consuming work for the air conditioner once the engine is started.Stay away from wide-track tires if you want top mileage (汽车耗费1加仑油所行驶的路程)。
