Further notes on the text1.a plan for a twenty-one-mile tunnel,建造一条长 21英里的隧道的计划。
They always make plans for their holidays, but, in the end, they always stay at home.
He came with a plan for (building) a bridge over the river.
2.serve as,充当,起……
The books on the floor may serve as/ for a carpet.
This sofa can serve as/ for(a) bed.
3.a better plan was put forward,
put forward为固定短语,可分开用,其含义之一是“提出(计划、建议等)”:You know they wouldn't accept your plan. Why did you put it forward?
Has he put forward any suggestion?他提出什么建议了吗?4.He suggested that a double railway-tunnel should be built.
suggest后面跟从句时,从句的谓语动词形式为 should(可省略)+动词原形(cf.第63课语法):He suggested (that) they (should) change the plans.
单词suggestsuggestion n. propose/make/come up with/ suggestionssuggest v.
The thought of summer suggests swimming.
He suggested that a double railway-tunnel be built.I suggested (that) we (should) go home. If it is rains tomorrow , we’ll stay at home.1与现在事实相反在第40课的语法中If I were you, I would accept the offer from New Oriental如果我是你,我就会接受新东方的offer。
2与过去事实相反if从句需用过去完成时,主句用would have/should have+过去分词形式:if,at that time ,British had not feared invasion, it would have been completed. If he had accepted the offer, he would have been a teacher of new oriental.3 与将来事实相反虚拟语气的句子往往由两部分构成,if从句和主句,这里的if从句所假设的条件都是不可能实现的,if条件句分为真实条件句和非真实条件句,只有确定是非真实条件句以后,才可以使用虚拟语气。

He said that it would be possible to build a platform in the centre of the Channel. This platform would serve as a port and a railway station. The tunnel would be well-ventilated if tall chimneys were built above sea level. In 1860, a better plan was put forward by an Englishman, William Low. He suggested that a double railway-tunnel should be built. This would solve the problem of ventilation, for if a train entered this tunnel, it would draw in fresh air behind it. Forty-two years later a tunnel was actually begun. If, at the time, the British had not feared invasion, it would have been completed.

By the time the police arrived, the murderer had left.
例:you can't play music here, for grandma is sleeping.
1,not only A,but also B2,neither A,nor B3,either A,or B这三种情况都是就近原则的,也就是谓语的数和格都由B决定,和A无关。
例:Neither you nor I am responsible.
比如听演唱会就不会用listen或者hear,而是用have a concert。
同样的还有give a talk, give a lesson, give a class等。
