Aquifers are classified as unconfined. confined and leaky. An aquifer, the upper surface of Which is defined by the water table ,is called an unconfined ,water table or phreatic aquifer.

The water table is in vertical contact with the atmosphere through the soil interstices. Rest water level in a well of small diameter tapping an unconfined aquifer represents the position of the water table at the point. A confined aquifer, also known as artesian or pressure

aquifer exerts an upward hydrostatic pressure greater than the atmosphere on the overly-

ing impermeable strata. In a tightly cased well penetrating a confined aquifer, the water

level will rise above the top of the aquifer corresponding !o the hydrostatic pressure head
