Until the seventh century, all educated Europeans knew Latin. It did not matter if they lived in England or Italy or France or Spain. If they were educated, they knew Latin.During the seventh century, educated Europeans began to study Greek as well as Latin. Greek and Latin had been the leading languages of the ancient Greeks and Romans. All educated Europeans were expected to know these languages. To educated Europeans, the languages ofthe Greeks and the Romans were important. The ideas of the Greeks and Romans were also important. People knew that many of their own ideas had come from the Greeks and the Romans. To understand their own culture, they must understand its origin. They knew that those beginnings lay in the classical world.Today we have so many things to study that few people have time to learn Greek and Latin. Few of you will study either language in school. You probably have eaten many of them.Love apple was the name used many years ago for the tomato. The tomato is originally an American plant. It was found in South America by early Spanish explorers. The word tomato comes from the native Nahuatl word tomatl. But when it moved north, the plant earned a different name. Remarkably, the settlers in North America thought it was poisonous. They believed that to eat it was surely to die. It was said that deserted suitors would threaten to eat a tomato to cause their coldhearted lovers regret. Because of this legend, the settlers called the tomato a"love apple. " While people enjoyed other native plants such as corn and sweet potatoes, everyone avoided the tomato. No one knows who first dared to eat a tomato. Perhaps someone was brave enough, or lovesick enough, to try out the truth of the rumors. Of course, whoever ate this fruit was perfectly safe. No one died from eating a love apple. Still, it was many years before the people fully believed that the tomato was a safe, and even good food. But its use did become common, and the plant was sent across the ocean to become part of many traditional European dishes.40. The language from which we derived the word tomato isA. PortugueseB. What Happens to the BrokenheartedC. The History of the TomatoD. Vegetables in Our DietPassage ThreeNature has devised many ways to protect creatures' eyes. The most common protection is the eyelid--a fold of skin that closes over the eye, protecting it from damage. Eyelashes are useful for keeping out dust and other irritants, and tears wash away any particles that get through the other defenses. Some creatures, including most birds, have three eyelids. The upper and lower lids act like human lids and keep out twigs, dirt and sand. The third eyelid, however, is a semitransparent tissue that crosses over the eye from the inside corner to the outside corner.Because of this protective membrane, birds seldom have to blink. They close their eyes only when they go to sleep. In ducks, this third eyelid self as an underwater diving mask that helps the ducks find food. Most fish and snakes have no eyelids at all. Instead, a hard glassy covering protects their eyes. In fish, water constantly sweeps away dirt from the covering. And a snake's eyesight is usually so bad that a little dirt obscuring its vision does not disturb it greatly.Eyelashes defend the eye by shading it from glare. They also act like miniature brushes to remove dust. Camels have lashes that are four inches long to protect their eyes from windblown sand in the desert.44. A camel has long eyelashes__________.A. to keep windblown sand out of its eyesB. that get in the way of its sightC. to help it see betterD. to attract other camels45. The writer implies that eyelids are__________.A. not found on lizardsB. nice to look atC. always covered with eyelashesD. the most effective eye protection46. The author compares the duck's third eyelid to a__________.A. tissueB. glassy coveringC. tiny brushD. diving mask47. A good title for this passage would be__________.A. Look OutB. Birds' EyesC. Eyes in the NightD. Protecting the EyePassage FourAs part of an ongoing campaign against polyvinyl chloride (聚氯乙烯), a Virginia-based environmental advocacy group today called on manufacturers and retailers to phase out its use in shower curtains. A previous study, conducted by Environmental Protection Agency researchers, also found that plastic shower curtains can emit toxic compounds into the air. There's still debate among scientists about just how serious the health effectsare especially at low doses. However, CHEJ urges consumers to avoid using PVC shower curtains, as well as many otherPVC products. For people who are concerned about their shower curtains, there are alternatives. IKEA phased out PVC shower curtains 11 years ago, switching to ethylene vinyl acetate(乙烯醋酸共聚物). The company has said that 88 percent of its shower curtains would be PVC free by spring of 2008. Manufacturers are not required to label shower curtains, but some do list" PVC" or" vinyl"on the packaging. Numerous online retailers, sell shower curtains--primarily cotton or hemp--that are free of PVC. However, mildew(发霉) can be a problem with cotton and hemp products.48. The Home Office says names of companies and directors are to be published on the UK Border Agency website. The agency will publish how many illegal immigrants the company was employing and how much it was fined.By May this year there had been 137 prosecutions under the new rules leading to fines totaling500,000--almost 3,000 per firm. The total number of prosecutions was 10 times more than were carried out in 2007, and double the total for the previous decade.Immigration chiefs are also switching their focus from small-time illegal employers, such as takeaway restaurants, in an effort to major organized criminal enterprises supplying illegal labor, often relying on international networks to smuggle people into the UK.Some 7,500 immigration officers will be re-organized into more localized teams with police and customs officials in an effort to better target what the Home Office says are illegal working hotspots. These could include areas of the economy where there is a high demand for labor including agriculture, construction and hospitality.Nobody knows how many people are working without permission in theUK--although estimates put the number of illegal residents at more than 500,000.Trade Union leaders have also raised concerns about the government's strategy, arguing that it could drive the worst employers further underground, penalizing exceptionally poor workers unable to break out of a situation they did not necessarily choose.52. Each passage is followed by five questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A,B,C and D, choose the best and mark your answer on the ANSEWR SHEET.Passage OneHave you ever heard of a pawpaw(木瓜)If not, do not feel bad. Many Americans do not know of the fruit, although it is native to the U.S..Once, however, it was one of the most popular fruits in North America. Happily, those who love the pawpaw are trying to return it to its former position in American foods.A pawpaw is a tropical fruit that used to be grown along the East Coast from New York to Florida and all over the eastern U.S..At one time, it could be found as far west as Nebraska. The pawpaw was an important food for Native Americans and even early European settlers. Pawpaws reportedly were a favorite treat of George Washington, the first U.S. president, who especially liked them cold. Thomas Jefferson, the third U.S. president, was also s fan of the fruit. He planted papaws at his home in Virginia. He also sent pawpaw seeds to his friends in France, American explorers Lewis and Clark wrote in their journals about the pawpaw. The pawpaw is difficult to be sold commercially. The fruit requires a very special environment---low, wet areas that sometimes flood. It has a very short harvest season, from two to three weeks in September and October. In addition, the fruit is good to eat for only two to three days after harvesting. This makes it hard to sell anywhere distant from the pawpaw tree it comes from.Planters are again growing pawpaw trees and harvesting the fruit. In several states farmers have organized “pawpaw festivals” to reintroduce people to food. At such a festival in Maryland recently, farmers displayed different products made with pawpaws, like pawpaw jams, pies, ice-cream and beer.16. Many American people do not know that the pawpaw _____A. Was once popular in the U.S.B. Is native to the U.S. onlyC. Has become popular againD. Is a healthy fruit17. The pawpaw used to be found mainly _____A. Around NebraskaB. In the eastern U.S.C. All over FloridaD. In New York suburbs18. It is difficult to sell the pawpaw on a large scale for the following reasons EXCPEPT that the fruit _____A. Requires a very special environmentB. Has a very short harvest seasonC. Does not taste goodD. Is difficult to preserve after harvesting20. Pawpaw festivals are organized in some states _____A. As a way of celebrating harvestB. As part of the traditional cultureC. To display pawpaw growing techniquesD. To reintroduce people to the fruitPassage TwoThroughout history, humans have suffered from a condition that they have never been able to escape—ageing. Some researchers, however, believe we may be thinking about it in the wrong way. They say we should start treating ageing itself as a disease—one that can be prevented and treated.Their hopes are founded on recent discoveries that suggest biological ageing may be entirely preventable and treatable. From a biological preventive, the body ages at different rates according to genetic and environmental factors. Tiny errors build up in our DNA and our cells begin developing faults that can grow into tissue damage, which leads to ageing and ageing—related diseases. One of the leading figures in human life research, Aubrey De Grey, explains in an interview that their goal is to develop a set of therapiesfor middle-aged and older people that will leave them physically and mentally equivalent(相当的) to someone under the age of 30. “Of course, without wiping their memories,” he adds. But he doesn’t think that iswill be possible to stop ageing altogether. He sees a future where “rejuvenation technologies” can be applied to old people in order torevert their cells to what they were like when they were in their youth, buying them extra time. The idea is that someone who is treated at the age of 60 will be biologically reverted to 30. But because the therapies arenot permanent fixes. Their cells will end up becoming 60 years old againin another 30 years time.21. By “treating ageing itself as a disease”, some researchers mean_____A. Aged people are liable to diseasesB. Ageing can be dealt with like a diseaseC. Ageing is a disease hard to cureD. Ageing should be treated carefully22. Humans age at different rates due to _____ reasons.A. PhysicalB. BiologicalC. Genetic and environmentalD. DNA and cell-related23. The goal of De Grey’s research is to _____.A. Freeze people’s ageB. Make people youngerC. Stop ageing altogetherD. Adjust people’s memories24. What does “rejuvenation” (para.3) possibly mean?A. Relating to cellsB. Relating to genes.C. Becoming healthy.D. Becoming young.25. What will happen if someone is treated with De Grey’s technology?A. He will stay young for a longer timeB. He will no longer grow old.C. He will live up to at least 60 years old.D. He will not get ageing-related diseases.Passage ThreeWhen jack Davis, 9, looks up at the night sky, he doesn’t see just the stars. He sees his future. The fourth grader from New Jersey has a deep interest in outer space and the alien(外星的) beings he thinks might live there. In July, Jack heard that NASA was looking for a new planetary protection officer and decided he was the right person for the job. The position, which focuses on preventing astronauts from accidentallybringing extremely small, potentially dangerous alien life-forms back to Earth and ensuring that astronauts do not take Earth-based germs with them into space, pays from $124,406 to $187,000 per year.Jack wrote a letter to NASA, noting his qualifications for the job. “My sister says I am an alien,” Jack wrote, pointing out that since heis young, he can “learn to think like an alien.” He signed the letter “Jack Davis, Guardian of the Galaxy.”Within days, Jack received a personal letter from NASA’s planetary science director, James L. Green. “We are always looking for brightfuture scientists and engineers to help us,” Green wrote.”I hope youwill study hard and do well in school. We hope to see you here at NASA one of these days!”Jack said he was “shocked” when Green’s response arrived. “I shouted, I got a letter from NASA!”Green says he loves to answer letters from children. He calls his response a “gravity assist.” Spacecraft use gravity assistance from objects like planets and moons to help power the craft toward anothercelestial(天上的) body. Green hopes a reply can influence a person’s path in life in a similar way.26. Which of the following can best describe Jack Davis?A. MatureB. Curious.C. Talented.D. Honest27. But new research reveals that the concept isstill highly flawed(有缺陷的).An analysis of 400 studies into online dating shows that while itoffers access to plenty of other singles, users can be overwhelmed and put off by the volume of choice, defeating the purpose. The research, by Northwestern University and published in the journal Psychological Science in the public interest, found that the processes involved don’t lend themselves to forming strong relationships. Thefindings also indicated that the concept of an online profile(介绍) is notentirely useful and “can result in treating potential partners as mere objects”.Lead author Eli J Finkel explained: “Online dating is a terrific addition for singles to meet. However, there are two problems.” First, studying over seemingly endless lists of profiles of people one does not know, as on , does not reveal much about them. Second, it “overloads people and they end up shutting down,” he said.He compared it to shopping at “supermarkets of love” and said psychological research shows people presented with too many choices tend to make lazy and often poor decisions. The study’s authors also questioned the algorithms(算法) employed by sites such as to match people based on their interests or personality—comparing it to having a real estate agent of love. While the algorithm may reduce the number of potential partners from thousands to a few, they may be as unsuitable for each other as two people meeting at random, Dr Finkel explained, adding the chances are no better than finding a relationship by walking into any bar. “There’s no better way to figure out whether you’re a match with somebody than talking to them over a coffee or beer,” Dr Finkel said.31. 2017年湖北省成人本科学位英语真题试卷(题后含答案及解析)

2017年湖北省成人本科学位英语真题试卷(题后含答案及解析)题型有: 2. Reading Comprehension 3. V ocabulary and Structure 5. Cloze 6. Translation 7. WritingPart I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.According to sociologists, there are several different ways in which a person may become recognized as the leader of a social group. In the family, traditional cultural patterns confer leadership on one or both of the parents. In other cases, such as friendship groups, one or more persons may gradually emerge as leaders, although there is no formal process of selection. In larger groups, leaders are usually chosen formally through election or recruitment. Although leaders are often thought to be people with unusual personal ability, decades of research have failed to produce consistent evidence that there is any category of “natural leaders”. It seems that there is no set of personal qualities that all leaders have in common; rather, virtually any person may be recognized as a leader if the person has qualities that meet the needs of that particular group. Research suggests that there are typically two different leadership roles that are held by different individuals. Instrumental leadership is leadership that emphasizes the completion of tasks by a social group. Group members look to instrumental leaders to “get things done”. Expressive leader-ship, on the other hand, is leadership that emphasizes the collective well-beings of a social group’s members. Expressive leaders are less concerned with the overall goals of the group than with providing emotional support to group members and attempting to minimize tension and conflict among them. Instrumental leaders are likely to have a rather secondary relationship to other group members. They give others tasks and may discipline group members who inhibit (阻碍) attainment of the group’s goals. Expressive leaders cultivate a more personal or primary relationship to others in the group. They offer sympathy when someone experiences difficulties and try to resolve issues that threaten to divide the group. As the differences in these two roles suggest, expressive leaders generally receive more personal affection from group members; instrumental leaders, if they are successful in promoting group goals, may enjoy a more distant respect.1.What does the passage mainly discuss?A.The problems faced by leaders.B.How leadership differs in small and large groups.C.How social groups determine who will lead them.D.The role of leaders in social groups.正确答案:D解析:主旨题。

For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You are required to choose the best answer from the four choices. Then mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center Questions 16-20 are based on the following passage.I heard many parents complaining that their teen-age children are rebelling. I wish it were so.At your age you ought to be growing away from your parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teen-agers are taking the same way of showing that they disagree with their parents. (86) Instead of striking out boldly on their own, most of them are clutching at one another’s hands for reassurance. They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But somehow they all end up huddled round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in thus-and-such a way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoons (茧) and entered a larger one.(87) It has become harder and harder for a teen-ager to stand up against the popularity wave and to go his or her own way. Industry has firmly carved out a teen-age market. These days every teen-ager can learn from the advertisements what a teen-ager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teen-ager who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come with the only kind of popularity that really counts.16. In the passage, the author wants to tell ________A. readers how to be popular with people aroundB. people how to understand and respect each otherC. parents how to control and guide their childrenD. teen-agers how to learn to decide things for themselves17. According to the author, many teen-agers think they are brave enough to act on their own, but, infact, most of them ______.A. are too young to do soB. are much afraid of getting lostC. dare not cope with problems single-handedD. have much difficulty understanding each other18. Which of the following is NOT true?A. There is no popularity that really counts.B. It is not necessarily bad for a teen-ager to disagree with his or her classmates.C. What many parents are doing is in fact hindering their children from finding their own paths.D. Most teen-agers claim that they want to do what they like to, but they are actually doing thesame.19. What does the author think of advertisement?A. Convincing.B. Influential.C. Instructive.D. Authoritative.20. During the teen-age years, one should learn to ________A. find one’s real selfB. get into the right reason and become popularC. differ from others in as many ways as possibleD. rebel against parents and the popularity waveQuestions 21-25 are based on the following passage. In order to learn a foreign language well, it is necessary to overcome the fear of making mistakes. If the primary goal of language use is communication, the mistakes are secondary consideration that may be dealt with gradually as awareness of those mistakes increases. On the other hand, students should not ignore their mistakes. (88) The language learner may observe how native speakers express themselves, and how native expressions differ from the way the learner might say them. For example, a Spanish speaker who has been saying “1 do it” to express willingness to do something in the immediate future, could, by interacting with native speakers of English, observe that native speakers actually say “I’ ll do it”. The resulting discrepancy can serve as a basis for the student to modify his way of using the present tense in English. But a student who is unwilling to interact in the first place would lose this opportunity to learn by trial and error.21. According to the passage, foreign language students should not worry too muchabout making mistakes because ________A. native speakers will ignore their mistakesB. communication is the primary goal of language learningC. native speakers like foreign students who try to learn their languageD. everyone makes mistakes when trying to communicate in a strange language22. The passage indicates that the present tense in English is _________A. basically the same in English as it is in SpanishB. not the most difficult problem for foreign studentsC. not used to express a desire to do something in the immediate futureD. used with some verbs but not with others to express future intention23. The author thinks that language learners can reduce the number of their mistakes by _____A. asking native speakers for explanationsB. reading good books in the foreign languageC. speaking without regard to native speakersD. comparing their speech with that of native speakers24. The passage implies that foreign students who do not interact with native speakers will not _ __.A. have to worry about making mistakesB. learn very much about the foreign cultureC. learn about the history of the foreign languageD. take advantage of available language models25. The author's major conclusion about the function of mistakes in foreign language learning is that .A. mistakes do not interfere with communicationB. learners are often very afraid of making mistakesC. mistakes are not important in the process of learning a languageD. making mistakes can help the learner discover the rules of the languageQuestions 26-30 are based on the following passageDuring a state of deep relaxation, several physiological changes take place in the body: thebody’s oxygen consumption is reduced; the heart beat decreases; muscle tension and sweating ease, and there is decreased sympathetic (交感的) nervous system activity. This restful state not only allows the body to repair and restore itself, but it has a calming effect on the consciousness. How to achieve this state of relaxation, however, is a matter of opinion, and in some medical circles, a matter of controversy. A recent report by Dr. David Holmes of the University of Kansas in the journal “American psychologist”said that simple sitting in an armchair has just as many beneficial characteristics for the body as meditation () does. Researchers of other relaxation techniques disagree. These experts believe that more structured techniques, such as meditation, lead to a condition of deep relaxation.(89) The debate goes on. but one thins appears to be clear: the relaxation response can be reached by a number of methods, and the methods themselves are not as important as getting there. One day, one method may work best; on another day, an alternative method may be more appropriate. Once you are aware of all the methods, you can find the one that works best for you. Some of the relaxation techniques are meditation, autoanalysis (自我心理分析) and progressive muscle relaxation response than just sitting quietly in a chair, they have the added benefit of structure and discipline, and for these reasons appear to be more effective for most individuals.26. The passage indicates that a state of deep relaxation is not only good for one’s body, but alsobeneficial to ________A. heart beatB. consciousnessC. muscle tensionD. sympathetic nervous system27. People seem to agree that ________A. sitting in an armchair benefits a person as meditation doesB. what people are struggling for is a state of deep relaxationC. to achieve a state of deep relaxation is possible through various meansD. structured consciousness relaxation techniques are more beneficial for a person28. In the third paragraph, the phrase ?°getting there?±most probably meansA. arriving at one’s destinationB. getting what one wants mostC. reaching a state of deep relaxationD. finding out a suitable relaxation technique29. As far as relaxation is concerned, the author indicates that ?a_____A. aims are more important than meansB. means are more important than aimsC. some relaxation techniques are better than othersD. more and more people are interested in relaxation techniques30. The author’s attitude toward relaxation is best described asA. criticalB. objectiveC. optimisticD. subjectiveQuestions 31-35 are based on the following passage.I am not a computer expert. 1 never learned much in the way of math. And I am quite puzzled by things like engineering or electronics. Then why am I able to write about computers? I can write on this subject because of these shortcomings. The last two years of learning has been a severe test for me. By hard work I have managed to learn enough to use computers fairly well, and to work with people who know a great deal more than I. Since I have learned all this at such personal cost, I would like to share my knowledge with others. The best way to learn is to take a course. However, many people do not have the time for this. They will have to find some other way to get basic information. I hope to be able to help them by writing about some of the things I have learned myself.I have a home computer on which I have learned in my own time. I have used it like a home study course. I have sat down with it day after day, night after night, I have forced it to give up some of its secrets. Now I can use it to do some of the work that I get paid for. And I can do this work in my own home, instead of in an office. Many people may soon be working on a computer at home, just as many now take in other people’s typing. Some things about computers are easier than you may fear. First, computers are logical. Things that at first seem difficult will make sense to you after you learn the rules. Second, it is really not hard to learn enough to use today’s machines. You do not need to be a great brain. But you do have to learn to think in new ways. And you do have to keep a good bit of information in your head. (90) Finally, there are many people around who are really enthusiastic about computers. These people are always happy to be of help.31. According to the passage, computers can best be described as ________A. difficultB. puzzlingC. logicalD. secret32. It can be inferred that the author had to _______ in order to write about computers.A. Learn electronicsB. study very hardC. learn from other peopleD. take a home study course33. The phrase ?°a great brain?±in the last paragraph most probably meansA. a great manB. a person with a big headC. a remarkable successD. an intelligent person34. It is implied that the author ________A. has got a great deal of help from othersB. has known a lot of things about computersC. has got enough knowledge about science and mathD. has known more about computers than her colleagues35. The main idea of the last paragraph is that to learn to use a computerA. must take enough courseB. should be with a clever brainC. is not so difficult as one thinksD. is hard to think in new waysPart Ill Vocabulary and Structure (20 minutes 15%)Directions: In this part there are 30 incomplete sentences.
