Influence of Fast Food
An increase of the fast food industry in recent years may has been attributed to fast pace of life and “massive advertising and marketing campaigns aimed at children and their parents.”( Bowman et al., 2004, p.112) A growing number of people, especially children and teenage boys and girls, has chosen to enjoy their lunch or dinner in fast food restaurants. As fast food has gradually developed into a staple diet in many families, people should put emphasis on the problems that arise from this change.
Fast food may have adverse effects on people’s weight and children’s mental health and these could manifest as obesity risk and diffidence. According to the research of fast food and obesity that the fast food outlets have an increase of tendency over the past 3 decades and a growing number of teenagers in many developed countries are confronted with
overweight.( Fraser et al., 2012, p.e77) This phenomenon is not only because fast food is high in sugar, fat, and calories but also it is always served in a large portions. In general, children, who are overweight, are more likely to have “conduct problems” ( Duarte et al., 2010, p.96) and other mental health problems.
Another problem associated with fast food is that it may cause several types of diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, asthma risk and diabetes mellitus. Due to the fast food is high in salt and monosodium, fast food may pose a threat to blood pressure. A study use data based on “hypertensive and normotensive individuals” (He & MacGregor, 2002, p.769) provides that salt intake dominate systolic and diastolic blood pressure, which link to stroke and coronary deaths. ( He& MacGregor, 2002, p.764) Besides, another results of research state that a diet high in fast
food is thought to cause “asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis” and other allergic diseases in children and adolescents. (Ellwood et al., 2013, p. 8) Furthermore, one research presents that “insulin resistance” ( Fraser et.al.,2012, p.e81), linking to diabetes mellitus, may be increased by eating fast food. This is because fast food has a lot of fried food, with high in sugar, carbohydrate and low in vitamins and other necessary nutrition. In addition, carbonated beverage, which is a part of fast food, may also pose a threat to people’s bones. Findings demonstrate that carbonated beverage consumption leads to bone fractures through physically active adolescent girls.
( Wyshak, 2000, p.613 )
As fast food industry has developed at a high speed in the past decades, fast food may give rise to environment pollution and the abuse of food additives. There are billions of pizzas, chicken and hamburgers sold by fast food outlets each year and this causes a problem that the packaging of fast food is wasted.(Aarnio&Hamalainen, 2007, p.612) Although part of wasted packaging is recovered, the remaining fast food packaging could be a burden on our environment. In addition, some fast food outlets add some unhealthy additives to meat and other food for improving the taste, smell and color of them. For example, the use of nitrite in meat has a preservative and fresh-keeping effect. ( Karl-Otto Honikel, 2007, p.68)However, the excessive use of nitrite many cause some cancers. These two negative effects of fast food may lead to bioaccumulation in the nature and do harmful to our generations.
In conclusion, the influence of fast food on people and environment is multifaceted. The excessive reliance on fast food is likely to have an adverse impact on people’s health and pose a challenge to environmental protection. In the light of the rushing life of people, the better way of addressing these problems may is that people should build a new fast food style restaurants.
