1.Introduction

Alfred Tennyson was one of the greatest poets. In his famous poem Th e Eagle: A Fragrnent, he showed the best style in metre, rhyme一scheme, wording and meaning. The poem gives the best and vividest description of eagle in English language literature even in the world's literature.

2.The Poem:The Eagle

Among English poets, Alfred Tennyson as one of the greatest, who has been affirmed by many critics today. He also did so in his best famous poem The Eagle: .He seldom breached the rules of the English A Fragrnent, which powerfulness and the unyielding character of the eagle and gives the best and in English language literature even in the world's literature. Here's the poem: He clasps the crag with crooked hands;

Close to the sun in lonely lands,

Ringed with the azure world, he stands.

The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls:

He watches from his mountains walls,

And like a thunderbolt he falls.

2.1.The Eagle is Regarded as a Symbol

First, as the title, "The Eagle" and "A Fragment”convey self- conflicting information. An eagle is usually regarded as a symbol of braveness, aggressiveness and violence. On the contrary, a fragment only indicates weakness. So they are in contradiction. But the title echoes with the deep layer meaning of the last line of the poem.Only when you finish reading the whole of it and think of what kind of feeling the poet has to his deceased good friend can you understand the real meaning of the title, the whole poem and the poet himself.

Before we get into each line, let's view the poem generally. Apparently, we can see that it totals two stanzas, six lines and 48 syllables. Each line contains 8 syllables, no more, no fewer. And either stanza contains exclusively masculine rhymes, which occur at the end of verse lines. In the first stanza, the three lines rhymes each other by repeating the same final sound /andz/ to bind the lines which are closely associated in content; In the second stanza, the three lines rhymes through the repetition of the sound /01z/ binding the second half of the poem. In /0lz/，it contains a long vowel /0/，expressing a stronger feeling or a greater strength, because it needs strength and time when we articulate it·In metre, this poem is written in tetrameter. It's also in the commonest type of verse foot
