新高三英语暑假阅读材料SECTION ONEUnit One: How to Improve Your Study HabitsTEXTWant to know how to improve your grades without having to spend more time studying? Sounds too good to be true? Well, read on...How to Improve Your Study HabitsTerhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. You do well enough in school, but you probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily the case, however. You can receive better grades if you want to. Yes, even students of average intelligence can be top students without additional work. Here's how:1. Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule or chart of your time. Fill in committed time such as eating, sleeping, meetings, classes, etc. Then decide on good, regular times for studying. Be sure to set aside enough time to complete your normal reading and work assignments. Of course, studying shouldn't occupy all of the free time on the schedule. It's important to set aside time for relaxation, hobbies, and entertainment as well. This weekly schedule may not solve all of your problems, but it will make you more aware of how you spend your time. Furthermore, it will enable you to plan your activities so that you have adequate time for both work and play.2. Find a good place to study. Choose one place for your study area. It may be a desk or a chair at home or in the school library, but it should be comfortable, and it should not have distractions. When you begin to work, you should be able to concentrate on the subject.3. Skim before you read. This means looking over a passage quickly before you begin to read it more carefully. As you preview the material, you get some idea of the content and how it is organized. Later when you begin to read you will recognize less important material and you may skip some of these portions. Skimming helps double your reading speed and improves your comprehension as well.4. Make good use of your time in class. Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Sit where you can see and hear well. Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says.5. Study regularly. Go over your notes as soon as you can after class. Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused about. Read about these points in your textbook. If you know what the teacher will discuss the next day, skim and read that material too. This will help you understand the next class. If you review your notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer. Regular review leads to improved performance on test.6. Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't worry excessively about a single test. Tests provide grades, but they also let you know what you need to spend more time studying, and they help make your knowledge permanent. There are other techniques that might help you with your studying. Only a few have been mentioned here. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these. Talk with your classmates about their study techniques. Share with them someof the techniques you have found to be helpful. Improving your study habits will improve your grades.NEW WORDSaveragen. ordinary 普通的;中等的intelligencen. ability to learn and understand 智力necessarilyad. inevitably 必定casen. what has really happened; actual condition 实情additionala. added 附加的,额外的n. additionweeklya. done or happening every week 每周的;一周一次的schedulen. timetable 时间表chartn. This is the story of that adventure.Sailing Round the WorldBefore he sailed round the world single-handed, Francis Chichester had already surprised his friends several times. He had tried to fly round the world but failed. That was in 1931.The years passed. He gave up flying and began sailing. He enjoyed it greatly. Chichester was already 58 years old when he won the first solo transatlantic sailing race. His old dream of going round the world came back, but this time he would sail. His friends and doctors did not think he could do it, as he had lung cancer. But Chichester was determined to carry out his plan. In August, 1963, at the age of nearly sixty-five, an age when many men retire, he began the greatest voyage of his life. Soon, he was away in this new 16-metre boat, Gipsy Moth.Chichester followed the route of the great nineteenth century clipper ships. But the clippers had had plenty of crew. Chicheater did it all by himself, even after the main steering device had been damaged by gales. Chichester covered 14, 100 miles before stopping in Sydney, Australia. This was more than twice the distance anyone hadpreviously sailed alone. He arrived in Australia on 12 December, just 107 days out from England. He received a warm welcome from the Australians and from his family who had flown there to meet him. On shore, Chichester could not walk without help. Everybody said the same thing: he had done enough; he must not go any further. But he did not listen. After resting in Sydney for a few weeks, Chichester set off once more in spite of his friends' attempts to dissuade him. The second half of his voyage was by far the more dangerous part, during which he sailed round the treacherous Cape Horn.On 29 January he left Australia. The mext night, the blackest he had ever known, the sea became so rough that the boat almost turned over. Food, clothes, and broken glass were all mixed together. Fortunately, bed and went to sleep. When he woke up, the sea had become calm the nearest person he could contact by radio, unless there was a ship nearby, Wild be on an island 885 miles away. After succeeding in sailing round Cape Horn, Chichester sent the followiing radio message to London:" I feel as if I had wakened from a nightmare. Wild horses could not drag me down to Cape Horn and that sinister Southern Ocean again."Juat before 9 o'clock on Sunday evening 28 May, 1967, he aeeived back in England, where a quarter of a million people were waiting to welcome him. Queeh Elizabeth II knigthed him with the very sword that Queen Elizabeth I had sailed round the world for the first time. The whole voyage from England and back had covered 28, 500 miles. It had taken him nine months , of which the sailing time was 226 days. He had done what he wanted to accomplish.Like many other adventurers, Chichester had experienced fear and conquered it. In doing so, he had undoubtedly learnt something about himself. Moreover, in the modern age when human beings depend so much on machines, he had given men throughout the world new pride.NEW WORDSsingle-handeda & ad. Everyone was so kind to the old lady on her birthday. Surely her daughter would make an even bigger effort to please he?The PresentIt was the old lady's birthday. She got up early to be ready for the post. From the second floor flat she could see the postman when he came down the street, and the little boy from the ground floor brought up her letters on the rare occasions when anything came.Today she was sure the would be something. Myra wouldn't forget her mother's birthday, even if she seldom wrote at other times. Of course Myra was busy. Her husband had been made Mayor, and Myra herself had got a medal for her work the aged. The old lady was proud of Myra, but Enid was the daughter she loved. Enid had never married, but had seemed content to live with her mother, and teach in a primary school round the corner. One evening, however, Enid said, "I've arranged for Mrs. Morrison to look after you for a few days, Mother. Tomorrow I have to go into hospital--just a minor operation, I'll soon be home."In the morning she went, but never came back--she died on the operating table. Myra came to the funeral, and in her efficient way arranged for Mrs. Morrison to come in and light the fire and give the old lady her breakfast. Two years ago that was, and since then Myra had been to see her mother three times, but her husband never. The old lady was eight today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps--perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday, another decade lined or endured just as you chose to look at it.Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of colour brightened her cheeks. She was excited--like a child. She would enjoy her day.Yesterday Mrs. Morrison had given the flat an extra clean, and today she had brought a card and a bunch of marigolds when she came to do the breakfast. Mrs. Grant downstairs had made a cake, and in the afternoon she was going down there to tea. The little boy, Johnnie, had been up with a packet of mints, and said he wouldn't go out to play until the post had come."I guess you'll get lots and lots of presents," he said, "I did last were when I was six." What would she like? A pair of slippers perhaps. Or a new cardigan. A cardigan would be lovely. Blue's such a pretty colour. Jim had always liked her in blue. Or a table lamp. Or a book, a travel book, with pictures, or a little clock, with clear blacknumbers. So many lovely things. She stood by the window, watching. The postman turned round the corner on his bicycle. Her heart beat fast. Johnnie had seen him too and ran to the gate. Then clatter, clatter up the stairs. Johnnie knocked at her door."Granny, granny," he shouted, "I've got your post."He gave her four envelopes. Three were unsealed cards from old friends. The fourth was sealed, in Myra's writing. The old lady felt a pang of disappointment."No parcel, Johnnie?""No, granny."Maybe the parcel was too large to come by letter post. That was it. It would come later by parcel post. She must be patient.Almost reluctantly she tore the envelope open. Folded in the card was a piece of paper. Written on the card was a message under the printed Happy Birthday -- Buy yourself something nice with the cheque, Myra and Harold. The cheque fluttered to the floor like a bird with a broken wing. Slowly the old lady stooped to pick it up. Her present, her lovely present. With trembling fingers she tore it into little bits.NEW WORDSrelativen. 亲属,亲戚presentn. gift 礼物,赠品postmann. 邮递员rarea. not happening often 罕见的;不常发生的occasionn. special time; time when sth. happens 时刻,时机;场合mayorn. chief official of a city or town 市长medaln. 奖章ageda. oldcontenta. satisfied; pleased 满意的;高兴的primarya. first; earliest 首要的;最初的arrangevi. make preparations; plan 作安排,筹划minora. not serious or important 较小的;次要的operatevi. cut the body in order to set right or remove a diseased part 开刀,动手术operating tablen. a special table in a hospital, where operations are done 手术台funeraln. 葬礼efficienta. able to plan and work well 效率高的decaden. ten yearsendurevt. bear (pain, suffering, etc.) 忍受,忍耐spotn. a round area that is different from the main surface 点,斑点brightenvt. make bright or brighter 使发光;使发亮cheekn. either side of the face below the eye 面颊extraa. additional 额加的,外加的cleann. cleaningbunchn. things of the same kind that are tied together (一)束,(一)串marigoldn. 万寿菊(花)packetn. small parcel box 小包(裹)mintn. 薄荷糖slippern. 拖鞋cardigann. Certainly, there are many worthwhile programs on television, including news, educational programs for children, programs on current social problems, plays, movies, concerts, and so on. Nevertheless, perhaps people should not be spending so much of their time in front of the TV. Mr Mayer imagines what we might do if we were forced to find other activities. Turning off TV: a Quiet HourI would like to propose that for sixty to ninety minutes each evening, right after the early evening news, all television broadcasting in the United States be prohibited by law.Let us take a serious, reasonable look at what the results be if such a proposal were accepted. Families might use the time for a real family hour. Without the distraction of TV, they might sit around together after dinner and actually talk to one another. It is well known that many of our problems -- everything, in fact, from the generation gap to the high divorce rate to some forms of mental illness -- are caused at least in part by failure to communicate. We do not tell each other what is disturbing us. The result is emotional difficulty of one kind or another. By using the quiet family hour to discuss our problems, we might get to know each other better, and to like each other better. On evenings when such talk is unnecessary, families could rediscover more active pastimes. Freed from TV, forced to find their own activities, they might take a ride together to watch the sunset. Or they might take a walk together (remember feet?) and see the neighborhood with fresh, new eyes. With free time and no TV, children and adults might rediscover reading. There is more entertainment in a good book than in a month of typical TV programming. Educators report that the generation growing up with television can barely write an English sentence, even at the college level. Writing is often learned from reading. A more literate new generation could be a product of the quiet hour.A different form of reading might also be done, as it was in the past: reading aloud. Few pastimes bring a family closer together than gathering around and listening to mother or father read a good story. The quiet hour could become the story hour. When the quiet hour ends, the TV networks might even be forced to come up with better shows in order to get us back from our newly discovered activities. At first glance, the idea of an hour without TV seems radical. What will parents do without the electronic baby-sitter? How will we spend the time? But it is not radical at all. It has been only twenty-five years since television came to control American free time. Those of us thirty-five and older can remember childhoods without television, spent partly with radio -- which at least involved the listener's imagination -- but also with reading, learning, talking, playing games, inventing new activities. It wasn't that difficult. Honest. The truth is we had a ball.NEW WORDSworthwhilea. good enough for the time or effort needed; valuable 值得花时间(或精力)的;有价值的program (me)n. performance on radio or television 节目educationala. of or for education; providing education or information 教育的;有教育意义的currenta. of the present time 当前的sociala. of or in society 社会的movien. film that one sees at a cinema 电影neverthelessconj. but; however 然而,不过proposevt. suggest 建议broadcastingn. the action of sending out sound (or images) by radio (or television) 广播prohibitv & n. forbid by law 禁止proposalvt. suggestion 提议,建议actuallyn. in actual fact, really 实际上generationn. all the people about the same age (一)代gapn. an empty space between two things or two parts of a thing; a wide difference of opinion, character, or the like 缺口,间隙;分歧,隔阂divorcen. end of a marriage by law 离婚raten. 率mentala. of the mind 精神的;思想上的communicatevi. share or exchange opinions, ideas, etc. 交流意见,思想等disturbvt. make (sb.) worried 使烦恼emotionala. 感情的pastimen. anything done to pass time pleasantly 消遣,娱乐sunsetn. the going down of the sun; the time when the sun goes down日落(时分)neighborhoodn. the area around a point or place 邻近地区;地段adultn. 成年人typicala. 典型的educatorn. a person whose profession is education 教育家barelyad. hardly 仅仅,勉强;几乎没有literatea. able to read and write 能读写的;有文化的productn. sth. made or grown 产品networkn. 广播(或电视)联播公司;广播(或电视)网glancen. quick look 一瞥;扫视radicala. extreme; very different 激进的electronica. 电子的electronn.baby-sittern. someone who looks after a child when the parents are away for a short time (代人临时)照看婴儿childhoodn. time when one is a child 童年partlyad. not completely; in some degree 部分地;在一定程度上involvevt. have as a part or result (必须)包括imaginationn. the ability to imagine 想像力learningn. the gaining of knowledge or skill through studying; knowledge or skill gained through studying 学习;学问,知识inventvt. produce (sth.) for the first time 发明PHRASES & EXPRESSIONSgeneration gapfailure of the younger and older generations to communicate and understand one another 代沟in partin some degree; partly 在一定程度上;部分地grow upchange from a child to a man or a woman 成长,长大bring togethercause to meet 使相聚come up withthink of; produce 想出;提出at first glancewhen first seen or thought about乍一看;最初考虑时have a ball(sl.) enjoy oneself, have a very good time 玩得开心PROPER NAMESMayer迈耶(姓氏)the United States美国Unit Five: A Miserable,Merry ChristmasTEXTA miserable and merry Christmas? How could it be?A Miserable, Merry ChristmasChristmas was coming. I wanted a pony. To make sure that my parents understood, I declared that I wanted noting else."Nothing but a pony?" my father asked."Nothing," I said."Not even a pair of high boots?"That was hard. I did want boots, but I stuck to the pony. "No, not even boots.""Nor candy? There ought to be something to fill your stocking with, and Santa Claus can't put a pony into a stocking,"That was true, and he couldn't lead a pony down the chimney either . But no. "All I want is a pony," I said. "If I can't have a pony, give me nothing, nothing."On Christmas Eve I hung up my stocking along with my sisters. The next morning my sisters and I woke up at six. Then we raced downstairs to the fireplace. And there they were, the gifts, all sorts of wonderful things, mixed-up piles of presents. Only my stocking was empty; it hung limp; not a thing in it; and under and around it -- nothing. My sisters had knelt down, each by her pile of gifts; they were crying with delight, till they looked up and saw me standing there looking so miserable. They came over to me and felt my stocking: nothing.I don't remember whether I cried at that moment, but my sisters did. They ran with me back to my bed, and there we all cried till I became indignant. That helped some. I got up, dressed, and driving my sisters away, I went out alone into the stable, and there, all by myself, I wept. My mother came outto me and she tried to comfort me. But I wanted no comfort. She left me and went on into the house with sharp words for my father. My sisters came to me, and I was rude. I ran away from them. I went around to the front of the house, sat down on the steps, and, the crying over, I ached.I was wronged, I was hurt. And my father must have been hurt, too, a little. I saw him looking out of the window. He was watching me or something for an hour or two, drawing back the curtain so little lest I catch him, but I saw his face, and I think I can see now the anxiety upon on it, the worried impatience. After an hour or two, I caught sight of a man riding a pony down the street, a pony and a brand-new saddle; the most beautiful saddle I ever saw, and it was a boy's saddle. And the pony! As he drew near, I saw that the pony was really a small horse, with a black mane and tail, and one white foot and a white star on his forehead. For such a horse as that I would have given anything. But the man came along, reading the numbers on the houses, and, as my hopes -- my impossible hopes -- rose, he looked at our door and passed by, he and the pony, and the saddle. Too much, I fell upon the steps and broke into tears. Suddenly I heard a voice."Say, kid," it said, "do you know a boy named Lennie Steffens?"I looked up. It was the man on the pony, back again."Yes," I spluttered through my tears. "That's me.""Well," he said, "then this is your horse. I've been looking all over for you and your house. Why don't you put your number where it can be seen?" "Get down," I said, running out to him. I wanted to ride.He went on saying something about "ought to have got here at seven o'clock, but--"I hardly heard, I could scarcely wait. I was so happy, so thrilled. I rode off up the street. Such a beautiful pony. And mine! After a while I turned and trotted back to the stable. There was the family, father, mother, sisters, all working for me, all happy. They had been putting in place the tools of mynew business: currycomb, brush, pitchfork -- everything, and there was hay in the loft. But that Christmas, which my father had planned so carefully, was it the best or the worst I ever knew? He often asked me that; I never could answer as a boy. I think now that it was both. It covered the whole distance from broken-hearted misery to bursting happiness -- too fast, A grown-up could hardly have stood it.NEW WORDSmiserablea. causing unhappiness; very unhappy 悲惨的merrya. cheerful, full of lively happiness, fun, etc. 欢乐的,愉快的ponyn. a small horse 矮种马;小马bootn. 长统靴candyn. in his office one afternoon in 2016,when he heard his lab members whispering with excitement over a microscope. He realized something beyond their expectations was happening. The researchers,at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven,Connecticut, had found electrical activity in brains taken from dead pigs. With that shocking result,Sestan realized what had started as a side project to find ways to better preserve brain tissue for research had changed into a discovery that could redefine our understanding of life and death. The excitement soon turned to concern, when the researchers thought they saw widespread, consistent electrical activity which can indicate consciousness(意识).Sestan brought in a neurologist, who determined the readout was actually an error, but the possibility had frightened them.Sestan kept his cool and immediately did two things:he shut down the experiment and contacted the US National Institutes of Health (NIH),as well as a Yale bioethicist(生物伦理学家).Over the next few months, experts discussed the potential ethical implications, such as whether the brains could become conscious and whether physicians needed to reconsider the definition of brain death. They submitted the work to Nature. But before the final paper was published,Sestan met sharp criticism from the press. Some even suggested that the researchers were engineering immortality(永生),or maintaining a room full of living brains injars.Neither he nor his team wanted to discuss the results until the paper was out,but as their inboxes filled with concerns and anger from animal rights activists and futurists,Sestan became depressed. He felt all they could do,however, was to hold off on correcting public misunderstandings until the expert review process had runits course.Since the paper was published in April,2019,the team has been so busy fielding questions from the media and scientists that it hasn’t performed any further experiments.Sestan wants to focus on his original questions and explore how long the brains can be maintained and whether the technology can preserve other organs.“We want to get outside opinion before we do anything,”Sestan says.“When you explore uncharted territory, you have to be extremely thoughtful.”1.What happened in the lab at Yale School of Medicine in 2016?A.A better method was found to maintain brain tissue.B.Researchers discovered how to redefine brain death.C.Brains from dead pigs were accidentally discovered alive.D.Researchers arrived at the expected results of the experiment.2.Why did Nenad Sestan stop the experiment?A.He needed assistance with the final paper.B.He spotted a major mistake in the final result.C.He was frightened by the possibility of failure.D.He was concerned about the related moral issues.3.What was people’s reaction towards Nenad Sestan’s experiment?A.The press were strongly opposed to the experiment.B.Some people supported the research on immortality.C.Nobody wanted to discuss the final result in advance.D.The public took a positive attitude towards the experiment.4.How could we best describe Nenad Sestan?A.Responsible and reliable.B.Cooperative and creative.C.Determined and inspiring.D.Professional and cautious.篇目二A butterfly’s wings can have many jobs besides keeping the insect high up in the air. They may be used to attract mates,or to warn potential attackers to stay away. All of these roles, though, depend on their unchanging colouration. This plays into the idea that butterfly wings are dead tissue, like a bird’s feathers. In fact, that’s not true. For example,in some species males’wings have special cells releasing some chemicals which attract females.Nanfang Yu,a physicist at Columbia University,in New York, has been密封线内不能答题looking into the matter.Together with Naomi Pierce,a butterfly specialist at Harvard University,he has now shown,in a paper published in Nature Communications in February,2020,that butterfly wings are, indeed, very much alive. In their experiments, the two researchers used a laser(激光)to heat up spots on the wings of dozens of butterfly species. When the temperature of the area under the laser reached 40°C or so,the insects responded within seconds by doing things that stopped their wings heating up further. These actions included a butterfly turning around to minimize its profile to the laser, moving its wings up and down or simply walking away.Butterflies engaged in all of these heat-minimising activities even when the researchers blindfolded them. That suggested the relevant sensors were on the wings themselves.Dr Yu and Dr Pierce therefore searched those wings for likely looking sensory cells. They found some,in the form of neurons(神经元)that were similar to heat detectors known from other insects. They also uncovered disc-shaped cells that appeared to be similar to pressure-sensitive neurons. They guess that these are there to detect deformation of the wing—information an insect could use to control its flight pattern. The third discovery they made to contradict the “dead wing”idea was that some butterfly wings have a heartbeat.A butterfly’s wings have veins(静脉).These carry a bloodlike liquid which, researchers have now found in males, shows a pulse(脉搏)of several dozen beats per minute. The source of this pulse appears to be the scent(气味)pad,a dark spot on the wings that produces the female-attracting chemicals.Apparently, this “wing heart”acts as a pump that helps bloodlikeliquid through the scent pad.In all their experiments simulating different environmental conditions,Dr Yu and Dr Pierce consistently found that, different parts of the wing are covered by different sorts of scales(鳞屑).In particular, tubes pass through scales over the scent pads. This improves their ability to spread heat away and helps keep the living parts of a butterfly’s wings alive.1.A bird’s feathers are mentioned in Paragraph 1to .A.introduce the latest research findings on a birdB.highlight the recent studies, opposites don't necessarily attract.Research shows that people tend to seek out relationships with—and eventually marry —partners who have similar defining characteristics, such as age, political orientation, religion, education, and income.“Generally speaking, when we think about opposites attracting or not,we're thinking in terms of personality rather than these big key factors,"says Vinita Mehta,a clinical psychologist and writer based in Washington,D.C.One big factor as to why this may be is simply your stage of life:where you live, what lifestyle you have, and what kind of people you're exposed to.“If you’re on a college campus,by and large ,you’re going to find people who are in your age group,''Mehta says."You're going to find people who at least eventually become part of the same general income strata.”Researchers from the University of Kansas made a courageous claim.A study released earlier this year analyzed real-world relationships and asked couples (romantic partners, friends, and acquaintances)about attitudes, behaviors, values, prejudices, and personality characteristics that were important to them. The pairs that had closer and more intimate relationships were not necessarily more similar than newly formed pairs, and people shared similarities on almost every personal issue that was measured. The lead psychologists on this study believe might think that cyborgs exist only in fiction,or are a possibility only in the distant future. But cyborg technology already exists. The word “cyborg”was first used in 1960and defined as an organism “to which external components have been added for the purpose of adapting to new environments”.According to this definition,an astronaut in a spacesuit is an example of cyborg,as the spacesuit helps the astronaut adapt to a new environment—space.More recently, the word has evolved to refer to human beings who have mechanical body parts that make them more than human.Although super-humans like RoboCop are not yet a reality, advances in real-life cyborg technology allow some people to compensate for abilities they have lost, and give other people new and unusual abilities. An example is filmmaker Rob Spence and his bionic eye.Spence injured one of his eyes in an accident.A camera was implanted in his prosthetic eye (假眼).The eye is not connected to his brain or optic nerve (视神经),but it can record what he sees.Spence has used his camera eye to record interviews for a documentary about people with bionic body parts. Some types of cyborg technology replace a lost ability by connecting directly to a person’s nerves.Michael Chorost completely and suddenly lost his ability to hear in July of 2001.Two months later, doctors placed a cochlear implant,a kind of computer, inside his skull. This type of implant connects to auditory nerves and allows a deaf person to hear again.Around the world, over 300,000people have now been fitted with cochlear implants. These examples of cyborg technology have enabled people to enhance or change their abilities and improve their lives. But does everyone want to use cyborg technology? It might be too late to decide.Cyborg scientist Amber Case argues that most of us are already cyborgs.Anyone who uses a computer or a smartphone,Case claims,is a cyborg.Consider the data that you have in your smartphone. It keeps information for you so you don’t have to remember it:notes, phone numbers, email addresses, messages. It also allows you to communicate with friends and family viatelephone, text messages, email, and social networks. The potential benefits of cyborg technology are evident, but can this new technology be harmful, too?Could we become too dependent on cyborg technology—and become less than human? These still remain questions.1.According to the passage, the cyborg _______.A.is similar to human beings B.took root in fiction characters C.first appeared in space industryD.has some device attached to the body2.With the help of cyborg technology,_______.A.eyesight can be restoredB.the nerve injury can be repairedC.lost abilities can be replaced by a new skillD.hearing loss can be prevented by cochlear implants 3.Amber Case probably thinks that ______.A.technology makes cyborgs become common B.cyborg technology is crucial to modern society C.the use of mobiles improves cyborg technology D.cyborg technology helps improve human memory4.What is the author’s attitude toward cyborg technology?A.Critical. B.Skeptical. C.Optimistic. D.Objective.篇目九Picture this:It’s 2003and your family has just finished arguing over which Netflix movies to rent that week.Movies come in the mail and the family watch them throughout the week before sending them back and ordering new ones. Then, fast forward to 2008,and you have started to watch TV shows on Netflix’s new platform. Now,let’s come to the present. You sit down and open up Netflix on your TV and scroll for a while. Then you flip over to Hulu to see if they have anything more interesting to offer. Then you check HBO GO.Finally, you check Disney+.Then you realize that you’re paying for four different streaming services, maybe more.Let’s return to Netflix.More generally, streaming. There are over 100video streaming services available,as well as quite a few music streaming, including Apple Music,YouTube Music,Google Play, and etc.The streaming world,at least to some,is on its way to getting out of control, with each service requiring its own monthly subscription. And that is just entertainment subscriptions. We haven’t even taken into account subscriptions like Microsoft Office, magazine subscriptions, and email newsletters.Subscriptions started out as a service of convenience, but now,the oversaturation may have become burdensome. The services believe customers will pay more to get the content they want. However, statistics show a growing frustration (失望)among consumers. With so many options, they find it harder。

over by an army of joggers(慢跑者).They were there all the time:early morning, noon, and evening. There were little old ladies in gray sweats, young couples in Adidas shoes, middle aged men with red faces.“Come on!”My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening.“You’ll feel great.”Well,I had nothing against feeling great and if Alex could jog every day, anyone could. So I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more.Based on my experience, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around, and judging from the number of the people who left our neighborhood jogging army.I’m not alone in my opinion.First of all, jogging is very hard on the body.Your legs and feet had a real pounding(追击)running down a road for two or three miles.I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack while jogging, and I had something else to worry about.Jogging doesn’t kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out,as they did with me.Secondly,I got no enjoyment out of jogging.Putting one foot in front of the other for forty-five minutes isn’t my idea of fun.Jogging is also a lonely pastime. Some joggers say,“I love being out there with just my t houghts.”Well,my thoughts began to bore me,and most of them were on how much my legs hurt. And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain? And that wasn’t just the first week:it was practically every day for two months.I never got past the pain level, and pain isn’t fun. What a cruel way to do it!So many other exercises, including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly,so why jog?I don’t jog any more, and I don’t think I ever will.I’m walking two miles three times a week at a fast pace, and that feels good.I bicycle to work when the weather is good.I’m getting exercise, and I’m enjoying it at the same time.I could never say the same for jogging, and I’ve found a l ot of better ways to stay in shape.56.From the together 57.The underlined word “them”(Paragraph 3)most probably refers to .A.heart attacks B.back problems C.famous joggers D.physical weaknesses 58.What was the writer’s attitude towards jogging in the beginning?A.He felt it was worth a try.B.He was very fond of it.C.He was strongly against it.D.He thought it must be painful.59.Why did the writer give up jogging two months later?A.He disliked that .A.not everyone enjoys joggingB.he is the only person who hates joggingC.nothing other than jogging can help people keep fitD.jogging makes people feel greater than any other sport.BWhen it comes to friends,I desire those who will share my happiness, who possess wings of their own and who will fly with me.I seek friends whose qualities illuminate(照亮)me and train me up for love.It is for these people that I reserve the glowing hours, too good not to share. When I was in the eighth grade,I had a friend. We were shy and “too serious”about our studies when it was becoming fashionable with our classmates to learn acceptable social behaviors. We said little at school, but she would come to my house and we would sit down with pencils and paper, and one of us would say:“Let’s start with a train whistle today.”We would sit quietly together and write separate poems or stories that grew out of a train whistle. Then we would read them aloud. At the end of that school year,we,too, were changing into social creatures and the stories and poems stopped. When I lived for a time in London,I had a friend,He was in despair and I was in despair. But our friendship was based on the idea in each of us that we would be sorry later if we did not explore this great city because we had felt bad at the time.We met every Sunday for five weeks and found many excellent things. We walked until our despairs disappeared and then we parted. We gave London to each other. For almost four years I have had remarkable friend whose imagination illuminates mine.We write long letters in which we often discover our strangest selves. Each of us appears, sometimes in a funny way,in the other’s dreams. She and I agree that,at certain times,we seem to be parts of the same mind.In my most interesting moments,I often think:“Yes,I must tell ….”We have never met.It is such comforting companions I wish to keep. One bright hour with their kind is worth more to me than the lifetime services of a psychologist, who will only fill up the healing silence necessary to those darkest moments in which I would rather be my own best friend.61.In the eighth grade, what the author did before developing proper social behavior was to .A.become serious about her study B.go to her friend’s house regularlyC.learn from her classmates at school D.share poems and stories with her friend 62.In Paragraph 3,“We gave London to each other”probably means .A.our exploration of London was a memorable gift to both of usB.we were unwilling to tear ourselves away from LondonC.our unpleasant feeling about London disappearedD.we parted the darkest moments, the author would prefer to .A.seek professional help B.be left aloneC.stay with her best friend D.break the silence65.What is the best title for the passage?A.Unforgettable Experiences.B.Remarkable Imagination.C.Lifelong Friendship.D.Noble Companions.CJune 26,—the Human Genome Project,a great 3 billion,15-year task aimed at drawing the genetic map of humans,is now more than 90 percent completed. The scientific and medicalcommunities are very excited about the chances genetic research provides for getting rid of diseases and prolonging human life. But those communities and policy makers also are careful about the scientific door they are opening as the project uncovers the mysteries of life. For the last few years, the genetic advances in fast developing field of biotechnology(生物学)have provided material for all kinds of work, but the developments of modern science in unlocking the secrets of the human genetic code have opened a world of possibilities for human health,as well as for the popular imagination. While European and Japanese researchers are making rapid progress in decoding human DNA,the leading organization for genetic research in the US,which began in 1990,is “unlocking the code"of the human body to learn how to defeat fatal diseases.Already, the Human Genome Project has become widely known and praised for finding the genes connected with terrible diseases, and making progress toward separating the genes that show a sign of breast cancer or AIDS.Once these genes are found and studied, researchers can develop new ways to attack infections, and genetic diseases.Medical companies are very interested in mapping the human genome,as they expect to develop lots of new drugs for these diseases.66.Why did the scientists work hard at mapping the Human Genome?A.Because it can destroy many illnesses.B.Because its completion can help them get rid of many diseases.C.Because it can provide a lot of chances of work.D.Because they wanted Genome B.the Gene’s discoveryC.unlocking the Genetic Code D.the Genes and the ScientistsDThroughout history soldiers have fought bloody battles in order to control the high ground. There is no doubt that this is a tactical (战术的)necessity.Standing above your enemy is an advantage that often leads to victory.Nowadays, high ground does not just mean hill-tops.It also means space, which has become an increasingly important part of military strategy (军事战略).With its more advanced satellite technologies,America is the major power in space. And now the US Air Force has put into service a new weapon designed to jam enemy satellite communications. It is an important step toward US control of space. The so-called Counter Communications System (反卫星通信系统)was declaredoperational on November 1.The ground-based system uses electromagnetic radio frequencies (无线电磁波)to stop enemy satellites working on a short-term basis.“A short-term effect ensures that during the time of need, the enemy’s space-based capability (能力)is reduced,”said a US military official.“Following the time of need, their capabilities can return to its original state.”The system is made up of an antenna (天线),transmitters (发射机)and receivers and can be easily transported around in a vehicle. To control space was one of four aims of a national space policy started by former president bill Clinton in 1996.The goal is to make sure US forces can rely on space-based services and to deny an enemy any similar benefits. The US military has experimented with several “anti-satellite”weapons,including lasers,to destroy or damage enemy units.Theresa Hitchens, vice president of the Centre for Defence Information in Washington, welcomed the new system as long as it does no t create rubbish that could threaten global use of space. She believed it should not destroy satellites, only stop them working for a while.Unfortunately,it seems we are not going to limit our goal for ‘space control’ to non-violent systems,”she s aid, raising the danger of a space arms race.To change the balance of power in space the EU and China are working together on the Galileo project.By the system will be in place as an alternative to the Americans’ global positioning service.71.What’s the significance(意义)of the Counter Communications System to the US?A.It can help avoid bloody battles.B.It can bring the US closer to its goal for “space control”.C.It can ensure the US forces to depend on space-based services.D.It can destroy enemy equipment.72.How does the new system work? It affects the enemy by .A.being transported around easily in a vehicle B.controlling the high groundC.damaging them D.blocking their satellite communications73.One thing that seemed to worry Theresa Hitchens is that the new weapon .A.could increase the danger of a space arms race B.is not effective enoughC.is not threatening enough D.might produce dangerous waste74.What can we infer from the passage?A.New space weapons may be on the way.B.The US military have never stopped experimenting with anti-satellite weapons.C.The Galileo Project, when in effect, can match the Counter Communications System in power.D.In future wars, space battles will decide human’s fate (命运).75.The word “short-term”in Paragraph 4 means closest to .A.reducing capability B.effective for a special period of time C.not lasting long D.the time of need第Ⅱ卷(非选择题,共35 分)第四部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)第一节:阅读表达(共5 小题,每小题2 分,满分10 分)[1]Do you want to work with people or animals or machines or tools? Scientists have found a new world orbiting the sun 2 billion miles beyond Pluto, which had been the most distant known planet. The existence of the new object--- named Sedna after a goddess of the sea--- will be announced by NASA tomorrow. It is about 6 billion miles from Earth and the space shuttle would need to travel for more than 40 years to reach it.Professor Michael Brown from California Institute of Technology (Caltech), whose team made the discovery, said the find was the most significant for years.“Sedna is very big, and much further out than previous discoveries,” he said. It extended significantly the known boundaries of the solar system.Sedan has a diameter直径of more than 1,200 miles, making it the biggest find in the solar system since Pluto was discovered 74 years ago.It is slightly smaller than Pluto--- a finding that is likely to reopen the debate over what a planet is actually made up of. Some scientists claim that even Pluto is too small to be regarded as a planet while others say that any sizeable object orbiting the sun fits the definition. In 2002 Brown’s team reported the discovery of Quaoar, a planetoid小行星about 800 miles in diameter and 1 billion miles beyo nd Pluto. Pluto’s average distance from the sun is 3.6 billion miles.Last month they reported finding a new body, code-named 2004DW, which is 10% larger and slightly further away. Both those objects lie within the Kuiper belt---some rocks and very small planetoids orbiting the sun beyond Neptune that are probably the remains that formed the solar system about 5 billion years ago. There are about 800 known Kuiper belt objects, most of them about 60 miles in diameter.“Sedna is much further out than 2004DW and is well beyond Kuiper belt,” Brown said. “We have been looking for 21/2 years and I am pretty sure there are other large bodies up there too.”Cambridge Prof. Sir Martin Rees said objects like Sedan could provide valuable clues on how the solar system formed.1. Which of the following Cannot be true about Sedna?A. It is named after a goddess of the seaB. It has a diameter of more than 1200 miles.C. It is a satellite of Pluto.D.
