第三部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节:(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Walking down a path through some woods in Georgia, I saw a small pool of water ahead on the path. I adjusted my direction to go around it on the part of the path that wasn't covered by water or mud. As I reached the pool, I was suddenly attacked!
Yet I did nothing for the attack. It was so unpredictable and from somewhere totally unexpected. I was surprised as well as unhurt though I had been struck four or five times. I backed up a foot and my attacker stopped attacking me. Had I been hurt I wouldn't have found it amusing. And I was laughing. After all, I was being attacked by a butterfly!
Having stopped laughing, I took a step forward. My attacker rushed me again. He charged towards me at full speed, attempting to hurt me but in vain. For a second time, I took a step backwards while my attacker paused.
I wasn't sure what to do. After all, it's just not everyday that one is attacked by a butterfly. I stepped back to look the situation over. My attacker moved back to land on the ground. That's when I discovered why my attacker was charging me only moments earlier. He had a mate(伙伴) and she was dying.
Sitting close beside her, he opened and closed his wings as if to fan her. I could only admire the love and courage of that butterfly in his concern for his mate. He had taken it up on himself to attack me for his mate's sake(利益), even though she was clearly dying and I was so large. He did so just to give her those extra few precious moments of life, should I have been careless enough to step on her. His courage in attacking
something thousands of times larger and heavier than himself just for his mate's safety seemed admirable. I couldn't do anything other than reward him by walking on the more difficult side of the pool. He had truly earned those moments to be with her, undisturbed.
Since then, I've used that butterfly’s courage as an inspiration and to remind myself that good things are worth fighting for.
56. The writer changed his direction while walking down a path because he wanted________.
A. to get close to a butterfly.
B. to escape a sudden attack.
C. to look over the bad situation.
D. to avoid getting his shoes dirty.
57. What made the man feel funny?
A. Making the attacker pause.
B. Being stepped on by his mate.
C. Being attacked by a butterfly.
D. Discovering the angry butterfly.
58. Which of the following words can best describe the butterfly?
A. careless
B. amusing
C. aggressive
D. courageous
59. From this experience the man learned_____.
A. how he should deal with attacks
B. how to deal with challenges in his life
C. people should protect butterflies
D. people should show sympathy to the weak
B
This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths.
It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend (超越) it. Once we truly know that life is difficult---once we truly understand and accept it---then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.
Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they plain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families, their class, or even their nation.
What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause us sadness, or loneliness or regret or anger or fear. These are unfortable feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life
causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.
Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve. It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said, those things that hurt, instruct. It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to wele the pain of problems.
60. From the passage, it can be inferred that ______.
A. everybody has problems
B. we bee stronger by meeting and solving the problems of life
C. life is difficult because our problems bring us pain
D. people like to plain about their problems
61. The writer probably used just one short sentence in the first paragraph to ______.
A. save space
B.
persuade readers
C. get readers’ attention
D. make readers laugh
62. The saying from Benjamin Franklin "Those things that hurt, instruct" suggests that ______.
A. we do not learn from experience
B. we do not learn when we are in pain
C. pain teaches us important lessons
D. pain cannot be avoided
63. The main idea of Paragraph 3 is that ______.
A. most people feel life is easy
B. most people plain about how hard their lives are
C. the writer feels life is easy
D. the writer likes to plain about his problems
C
There is a big question making the rounds among the parents at my daughter’s class. Should the kids refer to the parents’ friends as “Mr. Jones” or “Mrs. Smith”, rather than using their first names? I was quite shocked, having e from a home where it would have been unheard of to refer
to one of my parents’ friends by their first names. This was reserved for only the closest of family friends and relatives, and even they always had “Aunt” or “Uncle” in front their name.
Respect is something that is earned. Unlike many of the other virtues(美德) we try to nurture(培养)in our kids, respect is a bit more plicated. It is not only necessary when dealing well with others, but the virtue of self-respect is critical for kids to succeed and feel good about themselves and their choices throughout their lives.
There are several factors that can have a big impact on kids and their ability to be respectful. The first one to consider is manners. Calling adults by their surnames(姓氏), setting proper examples during sporting events and while driving, and how we talk to each other in our homes all can have an enormous effect on a child’s concept of respect and how important it is. Many of these seemingly trivial(微小的)ideas have bee almost outdated, but one should seriously consider the value of these ideas before casting them aside. It is easy to bee unaware of these behaviors. Try to keep track of how often your child is subjected(经受) to this kind of disrespect.
The media, as you may have guessed, plays a large part in the increase
in disrespect. Movies are equally to blame, with a PG movie often containing an abundant amount of profane language.
These factors and others all contribute to an alarming increase in disrespect in society. If we don’t step in and change course, we will find living in a morally respectful culture unlikely.
64. What does the author think of kids’ referring to parents’ friends by their first names?
A. It is mon in his family.
B. It is OK if the friends are close.
C. Such behavior lacks respect.
D. Such behavior sounds funny.
65. What advice does the author give in the passage?
A. Parents should correct kids’ bad behavior before children.
B. Parents should mind their behavior before children.
C. Parents should nurture kids’ self-respect from birth.
D. Parents should choose suitable movies for kids.
66. The underlined word “profane” in the fourth paragraph means
“________”.
A. rude
B. simple
C. plicated
D. respectful
67. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Teaching kids respect
B. How to respect others
C. Respect is a virtue
D. Respecting others is respecting
yourself
D

Dear class,
Today I’d like to share with you the proverb “Time and tide wait for no man.”
I read it in an English magazine for middle school students. I like it very much for two reasons. First it is very easy to remember because all the words used are very simple. Second, this proverb always encourages me to make good use of my time to study. Next time, if you happen to meet someone who is wasting too much time playing puter games, you can say to him, “Time and tide wait for no man. Go to study now!” Of course, you can also say it to yourself when you feel lazy and don’t want to do anything.
