1996年这四位大男孩在伦敦的大学中相遇，原本只是朋友的他们在Chris和 Jonny两人开始一起玩吉他与写歌后，Guy也开始加入担任贝斯手，接著Will也 决定担任鼓手，Coldplay完整的团队成型。于1998年开始以四人团体进行排练。 1998年4月在Chris同窗 Phil（日后成为 Coldplay的经纪人）的 帮助下发行了仅500张 的“Safety”限量EP。 之后他们就开始了漂泊 的音乐生命。他们受到 英国知名独立摇滚厂牌 Fierce Panda的Simon Williams的高度赞誉， 并进一步在Fierce Panda发表了单曲 “Brothers & Sisters”。不久 Coldplay便被 Parlophone相中签约旗 下，于1999年10月推出 EP “The Blue Room”。
