Some school leavers travel or work for a period of time instead of going directly to university. What are the advantages and disadvantages for their studies?

It is true these days that many high school leavers choose to start their work or take a trip before going to university. While a gap year can bring some immediate drawbacks, I am convinced that it is more likely to have long-term benefits for their lives. On the one hand, young students are very likely to encounter several difficulties when delaying their university study. One of these problems is the delay in academic progress caused by spending one year off school. It is understandably almost impossible for young people to enjoy their experiences in doing a job or travelling to a new place but still arrange a certain amount of time for revision. As a result, gap-year takers may have to face the challenge of becoming familiar with the knowledge at school again, receiving more pressure of catching up with their peers. Besides, the life outside the university campus may prove to be mentally and physically overwhelming for inexperienced school leavers. They, for instance, may be at risk of being exploited in an exhausting job or face potential dangers on their trips to a new country. If not well prepared for such possible obstacles, young high school graduates can suffer from unintended consequences. On the other hand, I would argue that these disadvantages are outweighed by the positive effects. A gap year is an ideal opportunity for students to learn about what is not taught at university. Working with other people who are experts in a particular field can give these newcomers not only an understanding of the job but also valuable practical lessons to help thembecome more mature. When it comes to applying for a position in a company, employers tend to favourably consider applicants who possess extensive experience in life and the occupation. Furthermore, in terms of recreation, having a year to relax can be advantageous as students can have a chance to relieve stress in study. With a comfortable and willing attitude, undergraduates can acquire knowledge more effectively in comparison with those who go to university right away.In conclusion, despite some negative aspects, it seems to me that the benefits of a gap year are more significant for the reasons mentioned.相关词汇high school leavers 高中毕业生start their work 开始工作take a trip 旅游long-term benefits 长期益处encounter several difficulties 遇到一些困难academic progress 学术进步become familiar with 对……熟悉catch up with 赶上;追上overwhelming adj. 有价值applying for a position 申请职位extensive experience 丰富的经验advantageous adj.

Some students take one year off between finishing school and going to university in order to travel or to work. Do you think advantages outweigh disadvantages?

Some people think living in big cities is bad for people’s health. To what extent do you agree or disagree?(2014年3月1日)题目讲解题型类别:议论文审题要点:大城市的生活是否会对人们的健康造成破坏思路分析:文章架构可以选择单边倒,倾向一边或中立,城市发展和健康类的很多素材稍作改动都可以很好地支持论点。

In many countries today, big cities seem to be stubbornly appealing to the mass population, along with which there arises the question as for whether living in a city will damage people’s health. For me, the answer is definitely yes.

On one hand, the environment of most major cities, especially those in developing and underdeveloped countries, has been severely destroyed due to the overly quick industrialization. Take air pollution as an example, the speed of vehicles’s injecting tail gas and erect chimneys’ vomiting forth clouds of smoke is so fast and the volume so considerable that the atmosphere long before has failed to degrade the pollutants. Consequently, haze become a new natural hazard in many metropolises in the long run, with the PM 2.5 density insome reaching several times the national limit.

Many criminals continue to commit crimes even after being punished for it. Why do you think this happen? How can we solve this problem? IntroductionA mushrooming number of criminals, after being released from the jail, will revert to crime, exerting ceaseless baneful influence on the social harmony and stability. Behind such a ticklish problem, from my perspective, are two predominant factors and viable solutions are in desperate need to avert the bleak future. Body 1The chief culprit for re-offending would be the difficulty for the criminals to settle down and reintegrate into the society. Indisputably, one of the root causesfor anti-social behaviors is poverty, by which I mean living odds force some people to embark on a path of delinquency to support themselves by engaging in illegal activities such as stealing, larceny and the like. After being freed from the prison, with a criminal record, never would it be easy for the law-breakers who lack livelihood skills to secure a job and become economically independent. Another contributing factor for such a worrying trend has much to do with the psychology condition of the criminals. Suffering from improper treatment, be it physical punishment or verbal aggression, many offenders, when set free from the prison, are inundated with resentment instead of visions of life, for which they, running after revenge, are apt to fall back into perpetrating crimes. 语言攻击;embark on a path of delinquency v. 盗窃;be inundated with v. 复仇;are apt to v. Body 2Prickly as the issue is, steps can be taken to address this . Primarily, the government should play a leading role by enacting tougher laws and carrying out more severe penalties such as heavier fines or longer sentences for offenders toaccomplish the purpose of deterrence. The authorities should also polish the effectiveness of imprisonment with the aim to help criminals achieve rehabilitation. To specify, job-related training targeted at those released offenders are staunchly suggested, which enables them to be furnished with some employment abilities, be they a plumber, a hairdresser or a driver. In this case, they can be, in large part, encouraged to live a normal life rather than violate the law for survival. Efforts from family members, friends and the society are also indispensable to cure the mental disorders. To elaborate, showing enough respect and helping those ex-prisoners to find a job are great tender solicitude. The general public and the whole society should be made to believe are formed man deserves a new leaf. 强烈地;be furnished with v. ConclusionIn conclusion, the problem for ex-prisoners to resort to offence, notwithstanding its gravity, can be brought under control with both the government and the public shouldering joint responsibility. 2There are a variety of punishments for criminals, including imprisonment, fines, and community service. However, even after serving their sentences, a significant proportion of ex-prisoners continue to commit crimes. This essay will explore the reasons behind this and propose solutions.

Some people think watching TV everyday is bad for children. Others think it is good for developing children as they grow up. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Some people believe that watching television is not good for children while there are many others who believe that television is informative and educational for children. I firmly agree with the latter statement but in my opinion parents should decide which shows their children should watch. On the one hand, several lines of evidence suggest that television is informative and educational for children. To begin with, shows like world discovery broadcasted ontelevision help children to learn about new inventions. Furthermore, watching programs is an informative way of entertainment for children. For example, my son absolutely loves watching programmes on National Geographic/Discovery/BBC Earth. Many of these programmes have even helped him with his school assignments. He is not really into reading, but these shows give him the knowledge and information he needs. However, television can be informative and educational only when parents decide which shows their children should watch. There are many shows broadcasted on television which can be unsuitable for children. Firstly, there are some shows which are related to violence, drugs and sex. These shows spoil the mindset of children. Secondly, young children blindly follow some characters and learn violent attitude from them. For instance, in the recent past there were many reports about crimes committed by teenagers. Investigations revealed that many of them had the habit of watching violent shows on television. Inspired by these programmes they plotted crimes. This is a good example of the harmful impact of television programmes on children. Thus it goes without saying that parents can make television either destructive or constructive for children. To conclude, although television programmes can be informative for children, parents should help them choose the right programmes. If children are allowed to watch whatever they want, they may unwittingly choose shows that have a detrimental impact on them.【亮点词汇及短语】informative adj. 有教育意义的world discovery 世界探索new inventions 新发明National Geographic 国家地理school assignments 学校的作业unsuitable for 对……不合适violence 暴力spoil the mindset 摧毁精神状态blindly follow some characters 盲目模仿一些角色had the habit of 有……

Behind such a ticklish problem, from my own perspective, are three predominant factors and viable solutions are in desperate need to avert the bleak future. Body 1Primarily, much as many elders are pleased to enjoy their twilight years, it does not look feasible since most youngsters, bread winners in families, are swamped with work under this cut-throat competition, under which circumstance, their parents will voluntarily help them with chores and minister to their grandchildren. Consequently, hardly do they have sufficient time to take sports. Another major contributing factor would have much to do with the transformed lifestyles of the elderly. Unlike the past when people have limited forms of entertainment, the current digital era is saturated with intriguing activities, ranging from surfing the internet to shooting off to see amusing videos, which tightly grip the old's attention. Benefited from its online convenience and diversity, the old will be indisposed to step out for exercises. Undeniable is also the fact that the lack of tailored creational amenities in the vicinity of residence will dampen the old's zeal for taking sports. To illustrate, with a swimming pool being kilometers away, swimming would only be a wild wish. 可行的,办得到的;be swamped with v. 照顾;援助;be saturated with v. 使感兴趣,吸引住(某人)的注意;be indisposed to v. Body 2In order to address the prickly problem of inadequate physical exercise among elderly, the government should play a leading role by earmarking funds to proffering more age-appropriate sports facilities with either installing handrails or perfecting walking path, which are expected to give the old easier access to recreational areas, opening up more opportunities for them to join in activities like jogging and hiking. Apart from fiscal policy from the government, disseminating information through public service advertising, community centers and senior organizations is also of tangible boons in boosting the awareness concerning the significance of physical health. Besides, young adults, instead of being boomerang children, are supposed to shoulder more family responsibility for the care of older people is firmly within the domain of the family. ConclusionIn conclusion, barriers for the lack of sufficient exercise among the older individuals are various and the thorny issue should not be downplayed. By tailoring exercise facilities and elevating their awareness, older generations will be more likely to engage in regular physical activities.

Some people think that by paying taxes they have made enough contribution to society, others think there are more responsibilities than paying taxes. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Tax is the main source of revenue for the government. Therefore, some people feel that paying taxes is the biggestresponsibility that citizens have towards their country. However, others disagree with this view. In their opinion, citizens have several other responsibilities too. I totally agree with them.It is important to pay taxes because governments need moneyto fund various social and infrastructural projects. Therefore, by paying taxes each citizen is making a significantcontribution to the development of their country. However, in my opinion, this is not enough. Just because someone pays taxes it does not necessarily mean that they are good citizens. It isalso wrong to assume that all those poor people who do not pay taxes are not contributing anything to their country. There are lots of criminals who pay taxes. Their financial contribution to the economy is negligible when we consider the amount of damage they cause.Tax is just one of the many contributions that a citizen can make. It is equally important for citizens to abide by the law, respect the social norms and help fellow citizens in need. When people obey the rules, respect others and do volunteer worksthey help create a harmonious society where everyone feels happy and safe.To conclude, paying taxes is just one way of contributing to the society. Being a law abiding citizen who volunteers to help whenever they can is even more important.04相关表达responsibility 责任pay taxes 纳税infrastructural projects 基础设施建设项目making a significant contribution to 对……做出重要的贡献criminals 罪犯negligible 可忽略的, 无足轻重的equally important 同等重要abide by the law 守法do volunteer works 做志愿工作harmonious 和谐的surroundings 周边的环境responsibly 负责地;有责任感地。

Universities, especially those of international reputation, are full of talented students in every field, and academic achievement is a crucial evaluation criteria of a student. So, a mediocre student from rural regions will find it hard to compete with their outstanding classmates with better education background in urban areas, and some of them may even have difficulty to graduate. For example, in China, some high school students form underdeveloped provinces can get “bonus scores” in the College Entrance Examinations. Unfortunately, most of these “unqualified students” have to drop out university because their poor academic performance. Admittedly, affording students in poor areas easier access to university may help develop the local economy, as some of these students who are benefited from this policy may be willing to devote themselves to the development of their underdeveloped hometowns. Thus, the gap between rural and urban areas may be narrowed to some extent. However, the advantage of this policy is quite limited, since most of the university graduates will choose to stay in big cities for a more promising career development.。

Generally, I tend to believe it leads to many desirable resuits. It is evident that fulfilling some tasks over modern technologies such as theInternet and other computer networks is highly efficient. In the past, ifpeoplehad the need to do shopping, they had to go to the shopping mall; but today, allcan be done with the click of a mouse and the goods will be delivered home, evenat a lower price. Also, we used to need to go to the bank and wait for adesperately long line if we wanted to make a transaction from one bank accountto another: instead, now we may comfortably make use of the self-service bankingat home. Actually, almost all banks and financial organizations arewell-connected to the Internet, which promotes the development of internationaltrade and world economy dramatically. Thus, obviously, the efficiency of life has been improved significantly dueto the technological advances. However, that is not to say that lack of face-to-face communication bringsabout no problems. One of the biggest concerns is safety. With the increasingvirus threats and well-trained hackers, online deals are well e_posed to allkinds of risks and losses, for e_ample, the wide-spread problem of identitytheft. Therefore, when making the most of the desirable changes brought about bytechnology, we should be aware of its potential downsides and find a way tominimize the negative impacts.Overall, there are both favorable and unfavorable effects on individuals andsociety if everyday tasks are performed without the need of seeing each other. But I am quite optimistic about its future, and I think people and countriesalike will benefit from it on a new level soon. People today can shop, work and communicate with others via the Internet. They don t need to do these face to face. Is it a positive or negativedevelopment? We live in an age of electronic communication, and the Internet does help usin a lot of ways. Yet the fact that we have computers and smartphones readily available does not mean that we do not need face-to-face communication anymore. Electronic technology has dramatically changed the ways we shop, workandcommunicate and has brought about a myriad of benefits. From emails to instantmessaging to Skype to social media, the Internet has made our communicationfaster and easier than ever before. Besides, the cost of the Internetcommunication is significantly lower than the traditional means of communicationlike face-to-face meetings. The technology connects us to our online suppliers, colleagues in the workplace, families and friends from all over the globe forjust a small fraction of the cost required of an offline meeting. That being said, scientific evidence is mounting that the advent of digitaltechnology is having a detrimental effect on interpersonal relationships.Everything from body language and facial e_pressions to attentiveness andengagement can indicate different thoughts and feelings—each of which can onlybe truly observed through face-to-face communication. So, despite the clearupsides of digital communication, there are circumstances under which there isno substitute for face-to-face communication. Meanwhile, the complete dependenceon the Internet for communication may result in the sense of alienation anddepression which will keep us apart from the rest of the real world. In conclusion, it is necessary to balance those Internet interactions withface-to-face communication. It is hard to say how far the Internet would go, butface-to-face communication has not yet been and never will be replaced bytechnology.(274 words)总之,必须平衡网络互动和面对面的交流. In modern world, it’s possible to shop, work and communicate with people viathe Internet and without any face-to-face contact with others. To whate_tent isthis a positive or negative development? In such a digital age, which features the wide available of internettoindividuals, users are able to deal with a bunch of daily tasks online, rangingfrom doing shopping, arranging and completing working projects as well asinteracting with strangers and friends. In my view, this tendency is largelybeneficial for people’s work and life.To commence with, it is conceivable that telecommuting saves time foremployees. Without spending time on the way to and from work, office workershave more disposable time and the fle_ible schedule, in which case, they couldwork the hours they wished and have a better rest. In addition, onlinecommunication enlarges the circle of friends. More specifically, socialnetworking websites is deemed as an effective way to make connections withpeople with similar interests and goals. What’s more, long distancecommunication relieves couples or families from lovesickness and homesickness.Even though living thousands of miles away from hometown, they can stare at thefaces of their beloved and listen to their voice. In terms of online shopping, it has been thought as the indispensable part ofmodern life due to its convenience. Instead of going to malls, the only thingconsumers have to do is viewing the high-definition pictures and click thebutton of payment, the commodities they choose would be delivered at home inseveral days or appointed time. This is especially useful for people working ona tight schedule or in times of inclement weather. Undeniably, customers canpurchase goods all over the world; in consequence, there is no need for them totravel to foreign countries for some fancy dresses or handbags. On the flip side, a lack of face-to-face contact does generate harmfuleffects, among which the most obvious is that the loss of interpersonalskillsin reality. In fact, body language such as eye contact and gestures, and socialpsychology laid emphasis on in real way are invalid and ignored in virtualworld, making people incompetent and unskilled in face-to-face situations. In conclusion, although the dimension of communication would be diminished, Istrongly contend that the increasing popularity of communication via internetbenefits people from all walks of life.
