Ⅲ.Compose an essay (60 points)
In some society sports and entertainment stars have higher value than professional workers like doctors, nurses and teachers. Do you think it is a good or bad social phenomenon? Write a short argumentative essay about 300 words to discuss this social phenomenon. In your writing, give a title, underline your thesis and number your paragraphs.
Who have higher value: stars or professionals?
①Nowadays, athletes and movie stars in' some society make more money more quickly
than professionals such as doctors, nurses and school teachers. Though this seems no fair to many people, there are good reasons for such phenomenon. By laws of market, the higher demand for certain goods or services, the higher value such-goods or services would have. Movie stars or famous athletes entertain a nation or even the whole world.
They satisfy the needs of very large populations with greater efficiency than medical professionals or teachers, who usually work for one hospital or school. As a result, stars are able to create greater value for their employers and deserve higher income.
②However, I think that the real value of many stars is superficial. Unlike other professionals,
stars are made to cater the constantly changing pop culture. No matter how popular they are now, the stars would be forgotten as time goes by. Professionals like doctors and teachers create the true value for their society. Their experience and knowledge drive our society forward. By contrast, stars create demand and make their fortune mainly by making news to attract attention.
③Due to the powerful influences of show business, many young people are more interested
in getting famous and rich overnight than working hard in more worthy professions. Such ideas and action would make young people throw away their ambition to become good doctors or lawyers.
④To conclude, the value of stars is more superficial and does not form the real valve of a
society. The true value of our world is created by people with real knowledge and skills like doctors and teachers. We should not encourage young people to waste time and money being stars instead of working hard to be someone more useful to their society.
Should International Aid Be Given to the Poor Countries?
With the process of economic globalization, many countries and regions have strengthened cooperation and liaison in the fields of industry, agriculture, trade and finance. In order to dedicate to the mutual development, many developed countries spare no effort to help the poor countries by means of technological, medical and financial aid,
which, to my mind, is quite essential to the development of the world.
Firstly, aids from developed countries optimize people's living standard and eradicate poverty in the poor countries. Due to the backwardness of science and technology, people in some undeveloped countries and regions such as Africa, Latin America and Asia suffer a great deal from poverty, hunger and the scarce of water.
International aids from developed countries have improved their living environment and helped them with the development of agriculture, industry and economy.
Secondly, international aids give good medical care and help promote hygienic condition in
the poor countries. Malaria, cholera and smallpox were once severe threats to people's health. With the help of the World Health Organization and some developed countries, these diseases have been eliminated soon and the residents in the infected areas survived these deadly diseases, which would have devoured millions of lives without international aid."
Finally, aids to-the undeveloped countries in turn-benefit the donators. Due to the limitation of natural and human resources, the production cost rises sharply in the developed countries. With a view to reducing cost, many countries transferred their assembly lines and production bases to the developing countries, which not only solves the problem of low rate of employment in the developing countries but also make full use of the local resources.
Nevertheless, some countries are showing great concern about tie mal-expense of their aid aroused by bureaucracy and corruption of some governments. Therefore, the governments should take effective measures to utilize international aids reasonably and prevent abuse. Only with the help of international aids, can our world develop more quickly and prosperously.

Some people think that they can learn better by themselves than with a teacher. Others think that it is always better to have a teacher. Which view do you agree with? Write an essay of about 300 words discussing this issue with the title “Are Teachers Necessary in the Process of Learning?”
Are Teachers Necessary in the Process of Learning?
Some people think that they can learn better by themselves than with a teacher.
Others Thing that it is always better to have a teacher, in my opinion, most of us can learn how to do simple things on our own with just a set of instructions. However, to learn things more complex, it is best to have a teacher.
To begin with, teachers bring with them varied and useful backgrounds. They have been trained to teach individuals in different ways depending on their styles. For instance, some students learn better by discussing a, topic. Others learn more by writing about it,
Teachers can help students learn in the way that is best for each student. A textbook or a manual can only give you one way of learning things. What's more, they are only helpful if you are able to understand them. A good teacher can adapt her teaching to your needs.
Next, teachers, help you focus on what you are learning. If you are learning by yourself,it is easy to become distracted, and go on to other activities. Teachers keep your attention on the subject. They also approach a subject logically, taking it one step at a time,.On your own,it is tempting to skip parts of the learning process you think you do not need. That can hinder your ability to really understand the subject.
Finally, learning a subject,on your own is a very narrow way of learning. You can only use the information you get from the textbook. With a teacher, you get the information in the written materials as well as the teacher's own knowledge of the topic.
Teachers can also provide extra materials to broaden the scope of what you are learning.
There is nothing wrong with studying on your own,and a teacher can always benefit from quiet study. For the best possible learning, though, a good teacher is the biggest help you can have.

Some people say that computers have made life easier and more convenient.
Other people say that computers have made life more complex and stressful. What is your opinion?
Write an essay of about 300 words discussing this issue with the title given.
Do Computers Make Our Life Easier?
Do Computers Make Our Life Easier?
Some people say that the invention of computers is one of the greatest humankind's6
inventions. However, other people think that computers make their life more stressful.
I agree with those people who think that computers have brought many benefits and play
g very important role in our modern life.
First of all, every company nowadays uses a computer to store its data and make different kinds of operations. It is very difficult to imagine life without computers. A company would have to store millions of papers and documents. Moreover, a customer would have to wait hours to check his balance or get a piece of information about his transactions at his bank, while an employee was looking through those papers. Another important aspect of this is that people are able to type all their information, make corrections, print or send documents using computers. It makes life much easier. One can spend the rest of the time watching TV with his family of working on something new.
Second of all, computers provided a great means of communication-the Internet. I think it is the easiest and cheapest way to get in touch with relatives, friends, business colleagues, etc. Nowadays the world becomes smaller and smaller. When I was a little
child, I could not imagine that it would be possible to communicate with people from all around the world in such an easy way. A person can get latest news, become friends with someone from another country, find his old friends, and ask for a piece of advice, etc.
Finally, in addition to these practical benefits people can shop without leaving their house. They just use an Internet access, a computer and their cards to make a payment.
It is kind of difficult to imagine that a few years ago people had to spend their time in lines buying tickets. Now, a person can choose a destination, company, date and time and get tickets delivered to his door. I think it is amazing.
To sum up, I believe that computers make our lives easier. They change our attitude towards life. I think with the invention of computers people become closer and friendlier.

Studying the English language in an English-speaking country is the best but not the only way. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Write an essay of about 300 words expressing your views on the statement with the title given.
Studying English Abroad: The Best but Not the Only Way Studying English Abroad: The Best but Not the Only Way
Studying a language in a country where it is widely spoken has many advantages. It is, therefore, a good idea to study English in a country such as Britain. However, I believe it is not the only way to learn the language.
In the first place, most students in non-English-speaking countries learn English at secondary school, and sometimes at university nowadays. Although their spoken English is not usually of a very high standard, their knowledge of grammar is often quite advanced.
This is certainly useful when students come to an English-speaking country to perfect the language.
Secondly, studying the basis of English at secondary school is less stressful than leaning the language overseas. This is because students living at home do not have to worry about problems such as finding accommodation, paying for their study and living costs, and trying to survive in a foreign country where day to day living causes much stress.
However, there are obvious advantages of leaning English in Britain. Every day there are opportunities to practice listening to and speaking with British people. Also, students can experience the culture firsthand, which is a great help when trying to understand the language.
This is especially true if they choose to live with a British family, like exchange students, for example. Furthermore, if students attend a language school full-time, the teachers will be native speakers. In this case, not only will students' speaking and listening skills improve, but attention can be given to developing reading and writing skills as well.
In general, even though it is preferable to study English in an English-speaking country, a reasonable level of English can be achieved in one's own country, if a student is gifted and dedicated to study.

Academic dishonesty in all levels of education has been a hotly debated topic in the previous decade. Students cheat in examinations and papers; even some famous professors cheat in their academic works. What do you think are the major causes of academic dishonesty?
Write an essay of about 300 words expressing your views with the title given, What Has Caused Academic Dishonesty?
What Has Caused Academic Dishonesty?
Academic dishonesty has become one of the most serious problems in educational circles.
If you look up an academic paper on some particular topic with a search engine, the results may turn out to be astonishing for their similarity. Many educators and scientists have been found to cheat in their academic works. As a college student, I believe that the problem is induced by two major factors.
First and foremost, academic achievements have become the primary standards for promotion or salary raise. Many academic professionals have been forced to cheat by the desire for a higher title of a technical post or a more comfortable life. Some universities also require their staff or students to make certain quantified amounts of achievements, such as papers or works, to get a post or to graduate. This has led to a dilemma: universities need academic achievements in order to be competitive. However, dishonesty is sometimes forced by such requirements and will definitely do harm to the reputation of universities.
Second, the current penalties for academic dishonesty are still too tolerant. Unless there are serious consequences from the dishonesty, cheating is seldom punished. To pursue the largest benefits at the lowest costs is one of the basic instincts of human beings.
Thus, high return and low risk have encouraged the occurrence of academic dishonesty and damaged the interests of the owners of real academic achievements. Many people participate in academic dishonesty for better living conditions and social status. And these successful examples will be followed by more people and the consequences will be more severe.
All in all, academic dishonesty in China has become so serious that we cannot ignore it. Many factors have contributed to this phenomenon and we have to take measures to solve this problem right away.。
