The value of motherhood
In shopping malls, the assistants try to push you into buying “ a gift to thank her for her unselfish love”. When you log onto1 a website, a small popo-up2 invites you to book a bouquet for her. Commercial warmth and gratitude are the atmosphere being spread around for this special Sunday in May.
_____(1)__A___. The popularity of Mother’s Day around the world suggests that Jarvis got all she wanted. In fact, she got more-enough to make her horrified.
_____(2)__D___. They buy, among other things, 132 million cards. Mother’s Day is the No 1 holiday for flower purchases. Then there are the various commodities, ranging from jewelry and clothes to cosmetics and washing powder, that take advantage of the promotion opportunities, Because of this, Jarvis spent the last 40 years of her life trying to stop Mother’s Day. One protest against the commercialization of Mother’s Day even got her arrested-for disturbing the peace, interestingly.
_____(3)__B___. As Ralph Fevre, a reporter at the UK newspaper The Guardian, observe, traditionally “motherhood is something that we do because we think it’s right.” But in the logic of commercialism, people need something in exchang e for their time and energy. A career serves this purpose better.
_____(4)_F____. So they(复数) work hard and play hard. Becoming a mother, however, inevitably handicaps career anticipation.
_____(5)__E___. According to The Guardian, there are twice as many child-free young women as there were a generation ago. Or, they put off the responsibility of parenting until later in their lives.
So, Fevre writes that the meaning of celebrating Mother’s Day needs to be updated: “It is to persuade p eople that parenting is a good idea and to honor people for their attempt to be good people.”
注释:
1. log onto

log onto a website

B But what’s more, commercialism changes young people’s attitude towards motherhood.
C Obviously, the best gift will be a phone call or a visit.
D According to a research by the US card company Hallmark, 96 percent of American consumers celebrate the holiday.
E As a result, motherhood has suffered a huge drop in status since the 1950s.
F In addition, women(复数) are being encouraged to pursue any career they desire.
Rising Tuition in the US美国学费上涨
Every Spring,US university administrators gather to discuss the next academic year’s budget. They consider faculty salaries utility costs for dormitories, new building needs and repairs to old ones. They run the numbers and conclude-it seems,inevitably-that,yet a-gain,the cost of tuition must go up.
According to the US’s College Board, the price of attending a four-year private university in the US rose 81 percent between 1993 and 2004.___E___(46) In 2005 and 2006,the numbers continued to rise.
According to university officials, college cost increases are simply the result of balancing university checkbooks .“Tuition increases at Cedarville University are determined by our rev-enue needs for each year ,”said the university’s president,Dr Bill Br own. “Student tuition pays for 78 percent of the university’s operating costs.”Brown’s school is a private universi-ty that enrolls about 3,100 undergrads and is consistently recognized by annual college rank-ing guides like US News and World Report’s and The Princeton Review’s.__C_____(47)
Tuition at private universities is set by administration officials and then aent for approval to the school’s board of trustees(董事).___B___(48) This board oversees(监管) all of a state’s public institutions.
John Durham, assistant secretary to the board of trustees at East Carolina University(ECU),explains that state law says that public institutions must make their services availa-ble whenever possible to the people of the state for free.Durham said that North Carolina residents only pay 22 percent of the cost of their education.___F____(49)State residents at- Tending ECU pay about US $10,000 for tuition, room and board before financial aid.
Amid the news about continued increases in college costs, however, there is some good news. Tuition increases have been accompanied by roughly equal increases in financial aid at almost every university. To receive financial aid, US students complete a formal application with the federal government. The federal government then decides whethe r an applicant is eligible(有资格的)for grants or loans.__A___(50)
A The application is then sent to the student’s university, where the school itself will decide whethe r free money will be given to the student and how much.
B At public universities, however, tuition increases must also be approved by a state education(大概念包涵小概念) committee, sometimes called the board of governors.
C The school currently charges US $23,410 a year for tuition.
D Many American people are simply unable to pay the growing cost of food.
E That’s more than double the rate of inflation.
F The state(主语一致性)government covers the rest.
American Dreams
There is a common response to America among foreign writers, the US is a land of extremes where the best of things are just as easily found as the worst. This is a cliché(陈词滥调).
In the land of black and white, people should not be too surprised to find some of the biggest gaps between the rich and the poor in the world. But the American Dream offers a way out to everyone. ___F____(46) No class system or government stands in the way.
Sadly, this old argument is no longer true. Over the past few decades there has been a fundamental shift in the structure of the American economy.
The gap between the rich and the poor has widened and widened。

___E___(47)
Over the past 25 years the median US family income has gone up 18 per cent. For the top 1 per cent, however, it has gone up 200 per cent. Twenty-five years ago the top fifth of Americans had an average income 6.7 times that of the bottom fifth.__D____(48)
Inequalities have grown worse in different regions. In California, incomes for lower class familie s have fallen(下降) by 4 per cent since 1969.___C___(49) This has led to an economy hugely in favor of a small group of very rich Americans. The wealthiest 1 per cent of households now control a third of the national wealth. There are now 37 million Americans living in poverty. At 12.7 per cent of the population, it is the highest percentage in the developed world.
Yet the tax burden on America’s rich is falling, not growing.___B___(50) There was an economic theory holding that the rich spending more would benefit everyone as a whole. But clearly that theory has not worked in reality.
A Nobody is poor in the US.
B The top 0.01 per cen t of households has seen its tax bite fall by a full 25 percent age points since 1980.
C For upper class families they have risen(增强) 41 per cent.(结构一致,相反上层家庭增长,下层家庭减少)
D Now it is 9.8 times.
E As it does so, the possibility to cross that gap gets smaller and smaller.(结构一样)
F All one has to do is to work hard and climb the ladder towards the top.

❖Middle Age: A Low Point for Most
❖People around the globe hit the height of their misery and depression in middle (51), a new international study suggests. The finding by British and American researchers was based on an analysis of well-being among approximately 2 million people in 80 nations. With few exceptions, the observation appears to apply across the board, regardless (52)gender (性别), culture, geography, wealth, job history, education, and marriage or parental status.
❖"The scientific fact seems to be that happiness and positive mental health follow a giant 'U'(53) through life," said study author Andrew J. Oswald, a professor of economics at Warwick University in Warwickshire, England. "For the average person, it's high when you're 20, and then it slowly(54) and bottoms out in your 40s. But the good news is that your(55)health picks up again, and eventually gets back to the high levels of your youth."
❖The finding was(56)on the pooling of several different sources of happiness data, including: two multi-decade happiness/satisfaction surveys (first launched in the 1970s), involving about 500,000 American and Western European men
❖and women; four rounds of the 80-nation "World Values Survey"(57)between 1981 and 2004 in North America, Eastern and Western Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Central and South America;
and a 2004-2007 survey(58)nearly 1 million Britons.
❖The bottom-line: For most people throughout the world, the highest probability for(59)striking is around 44 years of age.
❖In the United States, however, some as-yet unexplained(60)differences were observed, with happiness among men dipping the most in their early 50s, whereas women hit their nadir (最低点) around the age of 40.
❖The researchers cautioned that cheerful people tend to live longer than unhappy
❖(61)- a fact that might have skewed (使偏斜) the overall finding. But they also suggested that evidence of a happiness(62)might simply reflect a midlife choice to give up long-held but no longer tenable (守得住的) aspirations (志向), followed by a senior's sense of gratitude for having successfully endured(63)others did not.
❖"That said, some might find it helpful simply to understand the general(64)of mental health as they go through their own life," said Oswald. "It might
❖be useful for people to realize that if they are(65)in their 40s this is normal. It is not exceptional. And just knowing this might help."

6-15+ Obtaining Drinking Water from Air Humidity
Not a plant to be seen, the desert ground is too dry . But the air contains water, and research scientists have found a way of obtaining drinking water from air humidity. The system is based completely on renewable energy and is therefore autonomous.
Cracks permeate the dried-out desert ground and the landscape bears testimony to the lack of water. But even here, where there are no lakes, rivers or groundwater, considerable quantities of water are stored in the air. In the Negev desert in Israel, for example, annual average relative air humidity is 64 percent -- in every cubic meter of air there are 11.5 milliliters of water.
German research scientists have found a way of converting this air humidity autonomously into drinkable water. “The process we have developed is based exclusively on renewable energy sources Such as thermal solar collectors and photovoltaic cells, which makes this method completely energy-autonomous. It will therefore function in regions where there is no electrical infrastructure,” says Siegfried Egner, head of the research team. The principle of the process is as follows: hygroscopic brine -- saline solution which absorbs moisture runs down a tower-shaped unit and absorbs water from the air. It is then sucked into a tank a few meters off the ground in which a vacuum prevails. Energy from solar collectors heats up the brine, which is diluted by the water it has absorbed .
Because of the vacuum, the boiling point of the liquid is lower than it would be under normal atmospheric pressure. This effect is known from the mountains: as the atmospheric pressure there is lower than in the valley, water boils at temperatures distinctly below 100℃. The evaporated, non-saline water is condensed and runs down through a completely filled tube in a controlled manner. The gravity of this water
column continuously produces the vacuum and so a vacuum pump is not needed. The reconcentrated brine runs down the tower surface again to absorb moisture from the air.
"The concept is suitable for various water users . Singleperson units and plants supplying water to entire hotels are conceivable," says Egner. Prototypes have been built for both system components -- air moisture absorption and vacuum evaporation -- and the research scientists have already tested their interplay on a laboratory scale. In a further step the researchers intend to develop a demonstration facility .

在四个选项route(路线),way(方法),channel(途径)和road(道路)中,只有way 最合适。

…there is no electrical infrastructure 是定语从句,修饰地点名词regions,连接词应该选where.
5. D 本句说明吸湿制水机的工作原理,promise(答应),progress(进展)或prospect
(前景)都与句意不符,只有process(工作过程,方法)最合适。

6. C of the ground 和with the ground 与句意接不上,below the ground 不合逻辑,因为从空气中吸湿制水的设备不可能安装在地面之下。

8. D 本段第二句由“ as the atmospheric pressure … is lower than in the valley…”,这是解题的重要线索。

Supplying

Obtaining(获得)后接from,而本句用的是to,

14. D 从上下文判断,再加上on a laboratory scale 的提示,本题要选tested。
