Conversation 1:

A: Hi, Jim. We haven't seen each other for a long time.

B: Yeah. How are things going?

A: Just so so. What about you?

B: I'm working for a foreign trade company in Shanghai

A: Really? When did you go there? Weren't you a teacher?

B: Yes. I used to be a teacher. But I think it's a hard job for me and I was busy with the students day and night. I don't like being a teacher.

A: How long have you been in Shanghai?

B: For nearly 10 years.

A: What do you do there now?

B: I used to work as a worker. Then I was promoted to a manager five years ago.

A: Congratulations. How do you like your job now?

B: I like the feeling it gives to me. It makes me feel important. Above all, it can give full play to my skills.

A: You seem to be content with your job.

B: Yes. What's your job, may I ask?

A: I'm still doing the same job as before.

B: Do you like it?

A: Yes, though I sometimes find it a little boring.

B: You never think about changing your job?

A: No. I have no such an idea at the moment.

B: Yes. I think so. Let's go and have some coffee, shall we?

A: That sounds a good idea.

Conversation 2:

Robert: You look exhausted. You must have been out late last night having fun. Muriel: I wish. I’ve actually started moonlighting. I’ve decided to go back to school and need the extra money to make ends meet.

Robert: Good for you. That’s great. Where are you moonlighting?

Muriel: I’m working at the university library. At that time of night, it’s pretty dead. When there are no students around, I can use the time to study. It works out pretty well, except for the hours.

Robert: Oh, yeah? What are they?

Muriel: My work schedule is pretty good, actually. I work three days a week: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. But my hours are 7 to midnight. By the time I get home, I’m dead tired.

Robert: No wonder you look beat. Here, have some more coffee.

Muriel: Thanks. I just hope I don’t fall asleep in the morning meeting.

Robert: It’s ok ay. No one will notice.
