In prison

In 1898:He imprisoned at the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio. While in prison:He, as a licensed pharmacist, worked in the prison hospital as the night druggist. He had fourteen stories published.The first appeared story "Whistling Dick's Christmas Stocking" in the December 1899 issue of McClure's Magazine.




Move to Texas

in March 1882 :Porter traveled with Dr. James K. Hall to Texas , hoping that a change of air would help alleviate a persistent cough he had developed. in 1884 :His health did improve and he traveled with Richard to Austin . over the next several years:He took a number of different jobs, first as pharmacist then as a draftsman, bank teller and journalist. He also began writing as a sideline. First marry:He met and began courting Athol Estes, seventeen years old .On July 1, 1887, they were married.

Born: on September 11, 1862, in Greensboro, North Carolina. Died: on June 5, 1910, in New York known by his pen name O. Henry, was an American writer. O. Henry's short stories are known for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization, and surprise endings.

Move to Texas

in 1887 :He started as a draftsman at the Texas General Land Office at a salary of $100 a month. in 1888 :Athol gave birth to a son , who died hours after birth. in 1889: Athol gave birth to a daughter, Margaret Worth Porter . In 1894:He was accused by the bank of embezzlement and lost his job but was not indicted. In 1895:Porter and his family moved to Houston , where he started writing for the Post.

Later life

In 1902:He moved to New York . While there, he wrote 381 short stories. He wrote a story a week for over a year for the New York World Sunday Magazine. In 1907:Porter married Sarah Lindsey Coleman ,who was a writer. In 1908 :His health deteriorated markedly. In 1909:Sarah left him. In 1910:He died. After funeral services in New York City, he was buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Asheville, North Carolina.

In 1896:He was due to stand trial, but the day before, He fled, first to New Orleans and later to Honduras. In 1897:His wife,Athol Estes Porter died from tuberculosis .
Early life

When William was three, his mother died , and he and his father moved into the home of his paternal grandmother. his favorite works were Lane's translation of One Thousand and One Nights, and Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy. In1876:Porter graduated from his aunt Evelina Maria Porter's elementary school . In 1879: he started working in his uncle's drugstore . in 1881, at the age of nineteen, he was licensed as a pharmacist.
