上世纪六十年代开始，文学著作翻译盛行，由此也产生了诸多优秀翻译学家。
彼得・纽马克正是当时重要的翻译家之一。
当时翻译界中对于意译和直译的争论较多，在实际翻译中也存在两派。
彼得・纽马克在此基础上对前人的相关翻译理论进行总结和概括，并结合自身翻译经验，于1981年著成《翻译问题探讨》一书，并在其中提出语义翻译理论和交际翻译理论。
其中语义翻译理论是指在原文作者的写作中心出发，严格根据作者的写作思想及风格，对原文进行翻译，遵循“忠实性”原则。
