Naomi Power had just returned to New Zealand from a trip to Europe. During her time abroad, she’d had many interesting adventures, but had also met experienced racing sailor, Rob James. They had spent a lot of time together and developed a close bond. Rob had also invited Naomi on board his yacht and, as she’d never been on a yacht before, she happily accepted and Rob taught her to sail. It was the beginning of two special relationships- with sailing.
Back in New Zealand, she was reading a magazine in her parents’ living room, when she saw a headline: French woman plans single-handed voyage around the world. Naomi was immediately interested. She began to dream- what an adventure that would be!
Naomi started reading books such as Chay Blyth’s The impossible V oyage and became certain about two things:she wanted to spend the rest of her life with Rob, and she wanted to sail single-handed around the world.
Naomi flew back to England in March 1976, and she and Rob were married at the end of May. However, Naomi was a little worried about telling Rob that she wanted to sail around the world. To her surprise, Rob was very enthusiastic, though he tried to warn her about the dangers. They discussed the problems and risks, and thought of ways to prevent them. Then they began to think about where they could find a boat. They would also need a sponsor. “you’ll need at least 60,000 pounds to buy and refit a boat,” Rob told her. “Chay Blyth may help. He’s got a lot of experience in finding sponsors.” But it was more difficult than they expected. Many people thought that Naomi was crazy to try to sail alone in the world’s most difficult seas. However, Naomi did not lose hope. She knew that she had to be confident if she wanted other people to have confidence in her.
Then, one evening her luck changed. They were at Chay’s house for dinner when one of the guests began to talk about sponsorship. He suggested it would be much easier to get a sponsor if Na omi took Chay’s boat Spirit of Cutty Sark; She would only need about 10,000 pounds to adapt the boat for single-handed sailing. Then a man named Quentin Wallop, who owned a yacht himself, agreed to sponsor her for 10,000 pounds - and the challenge was on!

Software from the kitchen
If you want to know what someone is like, look at their office. Tidy desk, efficient mind. Untidy desk, busy mind. But this doesn’t fit Gordon Jackman, who started business software producer Quillatic. He works at home, in the untidiest kitchen I’ve ever seen, yet he strangely hates untidiness in bus iness more than anything else. At the same time he admits that he has little interest in detail.
Jackman describes his colleagues as “sweepers”. He explains: “I can only get as far as the first 80% of an idea, but I know this weakness, so I leave it to everyone else to finish my ideas, to make sure details aren’t forgotten. People who don’t know their weaknesses run untidy companies and have unhappy companies.”
Jackman is a strong believer in testing people’s personal qualities as part of the recrui tment process, and he and his 60 employees were all tested. He admits that such a strong belief in this is unusual in business, but adds, “Have you ever noticed how teachers seem to be the same type of person? People do seem to select the job that’s right for their type.”
Most of his ideas, he says, are not new but come from reading just about every management book that’s published. “You wouldn’t expect a doctor not to have read anything about medicine since qualifying, yet with management it seems to b e allowed,” he says. “You have to read whatever is out there. Even if a book gives you only one idea, it’s something you didn’t have before.”
Jackman believes in developing his staff, but business deals come first. “I believe in appointing people to do what they can and not more. So, for example, at the moment I have a very good salesman who has almost completed a sale but won’t close the deal himself as he doesn’t have enough experience yet.”
At the same time, he has strong ideas about rewards. “Sa les staff can earn as much as manager, because I recognize that if one person’s doing a great job at managing, and another at selling, there’s no reason for a difference in pay. And although experience may make a difference, in the end it’s actions that count.”
Running a company from a kitchen may not be recommended by many writers on management, but for Gordon Jackman it’s a great success.
69. In the first paragraph, the writer suggests that Gordon Jackman is .
A. unsuccessful in business.
B. typical of computer experts.
C. difficult to fully understand.
D. a tidy person.
70. Jackman uses the word “sweepers” to describe people who .
A. sign up the big contracts.
B. start things but don’t finish them.
C. work with a project from beginning to end.
D. finish off things that someone else starts.
71. Jackman believes that .
A. people usually look for jobs which suit the type of person they are.
B. companies need to employ people who are of a similar type.
C. tests of personal qualities are taken too seriously by most companies.
D. it is wrong for companies to employ people without distinguishing characteristics.
72. Jackman believes that both business people and doctors .
A. should keep up to date with their field.
B. have to be good at management.
C. need to select reading material carefully.
D. should equip themselves with medical knowledge.
D
This topic is discussed annually. Do we or do we not go on holiday? My partner says no because the boiler could go, or the roof fall off, and we have no savings to save us. I say you only live once and we work hard and what’s the point if you can’t go on holiday. The joy of a recession means no argument nex t year- we just won’t go.
Since money is known to be one of the things most likely to bring a relationship to its knees, we should be grateful. For many families the recession means more than not booking a holiday. A YouGov poll of 2000 people found 22% said they were arguing more with their partners because of concerns about money. What’s less clear is whether divorce and separation rates rise in a recession- financial pressures mean couples argue more but make splitting up less affordable. A recent research shows arguments about money were especially damaging to couples. Disputes were characterized by intense verbal aggression, tended to be repeated and not resolved, and made men, more than women, extremely angry.
Kim Stephenson, an occupational psychologist, believes money is such a big deal because of what it symbolizes, which may be different things to men and women. “People can say the same things about money but have different ideas of what it’s for,” he explains. “They’ll say it’s to save, to spend, for security , for freedom, to show someone you love them.” he says men are more likely to see money as a way of buying status and of showing their parents that they’ve achieved something.
“The biggest problem is that couples assume each other knows what’s going on with their finances, but they don’t. There seems to be more of a taboo(禁忌) about talking about money than about death. But you both need to know what you’re doing, who’s paying what into the joint account and how much you keep separate ly. In a healthy relationship, you don’t have to agree about money, but you have to talk about it.”
73. What does the author say about vacationing?
A. It is the chief cause of family disputes.
B. It makes all the hard work worthwhile.
C. Few people can afford it without working hard.
D. People enjoy it all the more during a recession.
74. What does the author mean by saying “money is known ...to bring a relationship to its knees” (Line1, Para. 2)?
A. Disputes over money may ruin a relationship.
B. Few people can resist the temptation of money.
C. Some people sacrifice their dignity for money.
D. Money is considered to be the root of all evils.
75. The author suggests at the end of the passage that couples should .
A. discuss money matters to maintain a healthy relationship
B. avoid arguing about money matters to remain romantic
C. make efforts to reach agreement on their family budgets
D. put their money together instead of keeping it separately

第四部分:书面表达(共两节,满分30分)
第一节:阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

(每题一分,共10分)Is a sound social environment necessary for people to be good to others?
A proverb says that “Present a rose to others, and its fragrance remains in your hands.” Despite the fact that 81____ (help) others has always been a traditional virtue in China, people are now becoming reluctant to help those in need for the fear of being prosecuted for unintentional injury or wrongful death. Some blame the “bad social environment” for it while others believe the social environment should be not stressed in view of helping others. So far as I am 82________ (concern), I do hold that a sound social environment is quite necessary for people to be good to others. But in the meanwhile, we 83____________ (individualize) should take initiatives to create a harmonious society, rather than wait for it to improve passively.
On the one hand, a sound social environment is necessary in that it gives people a sense of 84________(secure) when they lend a helping hand. The passion for helping others never betrays us. It is a lack of legal and moral justice that prevents people from doing good things. Various reports are permeating the mass 85________ (medium) about how good-willed citizens end up with trouble in doing good deeds, like the famous Peng Yu Case. To uphold social justice under similar situations, a sound social environment with Good Samaritan laws is badly needed to protect those warm-hearted helpers, which can free them from worries and 86________ (risky) when they deliver help. In addition, the social indifference is also partly due to the long-existed hoe-one’s-own-potatoes doctrine. Helpers are often left isolated and unsupported. A sound social environment that praises human kindness and trust can reduce bystanders’ hesitation to assist, surely making helpers better protected.
On the other hand, it is useless to wait for the social environment to improve by itself. Just imagine how a house can be built if everybody 87________ (wait) idly for others to make a start. Since the society is composed of individuals, it is each individual’s behavior that cultivates, protects and strengthens the social 88__________ (moral). The social environment would not be changed overnight without individual efforts. We had but one choice that we ourselves spare no effort in moral cultivation, protection and strengthening in order to create a 89____________ (harmony) social context. Only by our joint efforts to accumulate good conducts step by step can we really improve the social environment.
In 90____________ (conclude), a sound social environment is necessary to encourage and protect intentions to do good deeds. With the climate of morality and credibility deteriorating in some way today, it is high time that we should actively devote ourselves to the improvement of social morality and build a harmonious society.
