Choose the one that you think is the best answer.Mark your answers on your answer sheet.TEXT AAll Sir William Jones wanted to do was to learn Sanskrit. While he was studying, however, he made a surprising discovery. This ancient language of India was amazingly similar to Latin and Greek. The Sanskrit word for "mother"—matar—was almost identical to the Latin word, mater. “Father” was pitar in Sanskrit, pater in Latin and Greek. The more he studied, the more similarities he found. How could this be? Thousands of miles and many natural barriers separated India and Europe. Still, Jones concluded, the similarities were too strong to be accidental. In 1786, he announced “No one could examine them all three, without believ ing them to have sprung from some common source.”Since then, scholars have traced many languages to this “common source.” Today, these languages are called the Indo-European family. But where did this source originate? Language and geography provide the clues. European languages have similar words for the animals and trees of northern Europe, such as oak, willow, bear, and wolf. There are no common words for the animals and trees of southern Europe. To scholars, this suggests that the Indo-European languages began in north central Europe. In time, some northern Europeans set out toward the east, settling in Iran, India, and Pakistan. Others migrated westward toward southern and western Europe. The root language developed into dozens of different languages, but the family resemblances remain. The word for “three” isdrei in German, tres in Spanish, tre in Albanian, and tri in Russian.Almost every language in Europe is part of the Indo-European family, but there are exceptions. Hungarian and Finnish cling to other language families. High in the Pyrenees, the Basque people speak a language that has no known relatives. Perhaps the Basques were the original inhabitants of the region. Isolated by mountains, they may have been bypassed by the spread of Indo-European culture.81. What did Sir William Jones discover when he was learning Sanskrit?A. Sanskrit was very similar to some European languages.B. Sanskrit was an ancient language.C. The Sanskrit word for mother is the same as that in Latin.D. Latin and Greek were very similar.82. Which of the following statements is true about "the common source"?A. Jones found out the common source.B. All languages sprang from the common source.C. Only three languages sprang from the common source.D. Since 1786, scholars have traced many languages to the common source.83. Where did the common source originate?A. In southernEurope.B. In north-central Europe.C. InIndia.D. in Pakistan.84. What can be concluded from the passage?A. Jones first discovered the root language.B. The languages with the common source are called the Indo-European family.C. The root language developed into different languages as people migrated.D. Every language in Europe is part of the Indo-European family. TEXT BYour first culture shock came after you left your home country and you needed to adjust to the United States, It is now important to learn cultural information about your company, so that you will fit in and perform successfully. The people who make up this environment have their own customs, habits and expectations of each new employee. Gathering information that is formal (policy) and informal (traditions) will help you learn the professional norms and become fully accepted.Policies are corporate documents describing procedures, rules, and standards that guide decision making and conduct. They are similar to official laws that govern a country. Some sources of such written company information include the annual report, product or service brochures, technical and procedural manual, employee directory and the company newsletter. Organizational traditions are usually unwritten hut common practices that have evolved over time. They set the tone and philosophy of the particular corporation, just as the customs of a country do. The best way to learn such information is to observe and talk with others such as your supervisor and co-workers.You can supplement ideas from formal introductory materials given you earlier. Explore with fellow employees those behaviors that may be tolerated but frowned upon. Ask your supervisor for feedback to avoidtypical traps that could cause your co-workers to reject youas a professional. Keep this guide nearby, and refer to it often in private. During slavery, many working-class whites, encouraged by slaveholders, feared the release of large numbers of blacks into the labor market and society in general. When northern industries used African Americans as strikebreakers in the first decades of this century, white workers feared the loss of their jobs. Today, many white Americans fear “black violence”. Moreover, specific fears about the “costs” of welf are as well as the "taking" of jobs through affirmative action have added to the fear of black violence. These fears have translated into negative stereotypes of African Americans as a people who are prone to crime and violence, unwilling to work, and a drain on the white taxpayer through their welfare dependency. In turn, these stereotypes have been used to justify informal discrimination, to prevent the help to the urban poor, to be negligent in enforcing laws or policies prohibiting discriminatory practices against black workers, and most important, to hesitate in making a serious effort at job creation for African Americans. The result is that African Americans’ share of valued resources has not increased much over the last two decades, even as formal discrimination has been greatly lessened. This fact is used to further the negative belief that African Americans have "not taken advantageof their equal opportunities."90. According to the passage, how did the northern industries make use of African Americans in 1900s?A. Sent them to ask the strikers to go back to work.B. Made them work very hard.C. Employed them to threaten the white strikers.D. Released them into the labor market.91. What is the ill influence of these negative stereotypes?A. Giving help to the poor black.B. Justifying informal discrimination.C. Enforcing laws prohibiting discriminatory practices against black workers.D. Creating opportunities of employment for the black.92. What can be inferred from "a drain on the white taxpayer" about the African Americans?A. They are unwilling to work.B. They never pay tax.C. They lack security.D. Their welfare depends on the white's tax.93. The author wrote the passage to tell us__________.A. African Americans pose a threat to the whites in employmentB. African Americans are dependent on the tax paid by the whitesC. African Americans are discriminated against because they are often on strikeD. the sense of threat intensifies the white's hospitality and discrimination against the African AmericansTEXT D“People thought of themselves as having rights fromcompanies,” said Hoshua Freeman, a labor historian at Columbia University. That sense of entitlement grew even stronger in the early decades after World War II and collective bargaining became the arena for arguing out wages, pensions, health insurance, vacations, hours and job security. That system is disappearing today. Career-long attachments to one employer, a notion born in the 1920's, are no longer the .norm. The newclass-consciousness makes less distinction between workers and managers. Rights are relative, at best. An increasingly conservative electorate has reduced government's role in regulating the economy. Unions have lost influence and membership. What people do is try to cope, by themselves, said Ms. Skelly, of DYG. Self-employment is one solution, DYG's polls show, and that is a rising trend. "They try, on the job, to hide any weakness in their performance," she said. “They work longer hours and take work home, without letting the boss know, to give the impression that they can do difficult tasks quickly. There is nothing like, ‘we are all in this together.’ There is too much competition. People talk of their weakness to friends and spouses, but not to coworkers.”And many Americans feel in their hearts that the unemployment might be justified. “There is a sense among people that we are inefficient and bloated,” Ms. Skelly said. “And until they feel that is no longer true, they are reluctant to criticize the forces that are cutting out the fat and the inefficiencies.”94. It can be inferred from the second paragraph that ___________.A. people do not enjoy their rights nowadaysB. people are more likely to change their jobs than they were in the 1920'sC. workers and managers share the same rights todayD. nowadays, people refuse to take part in the Union95. According to Ms Skelly, which of the following is true?A. People like to work overtime.B. People want to work at home.C. People want to impress the boss with their capability and efficiency.D. People need help from their families, for they cannot cope with difficult problems themselves.96. People hide their weakness from___________.A. their parentsB. their wives or husbandsC. their friendsD. their colleagues97. The main idea of the passage is___________.A. people thought of themselves as having rights from companiesB. people's sense of entitlement is not as strong as it used to beC. people work at homeD. people regard unemployment as usualTEXT EYou may not have thought of it just this way, but the letter you write is part of you, and expression of your personality. Therefore to write letters that are mere patterns of form is to present a colorless personality.Letters, by their very nature, are too individual to bestandardized. A letter may be absolutely perfect according to the standards of good taste and good form; but unless it also expresses something of the writer's personality, it is not a good letter. In other words, don't be satisfied to write letters that are just correct and nothing more. Try to write letters that are correct for you... letters that are warm and alive with reflections of your own personality. And if this sounds like a platitude (陈词滥调), stop for a moment and think back over your recent correspondence. What was the most interesting letter you received? Was it a letter anyone could have written? Or was it a letter that instantly “came alive” as you read it—that brought the personality of the sender right into the room with you. as though you were face to face, listening instead of reading? The fault with too many letters, today as in the past—the reason so many letters are dull and lifeless, and often fail to accomplish the purpose for which they are written is simply this: They sound exactly like the letters everyone else writes. They are neither exciting to receive nor stimulating to read.98. What does the author mean by saying “the letter you write is part of you”?A. Writing letters plays an important part in your life.B. When you write letters, you should be careful about what to write.C. People can see your personality from the letters you write.D. You should write good letters.99. What does the author want to explain in the fourth paragraph?A. A good letter presents one's personality.B. His opinion is a platitude.C. Letter-writing is interesting.D. Talking face to face is a better way to communicate than writing letters.100. The best title for the passage is___________.A. Letter WritingB. Personality in Letter WritingC. To Write Interesting LettersD. To Write Correct Letters PARTVI WRITING[45 MIN]SECTIONA COMPOSITION[35 MIN]We all know that men and women play different roles in modern society, and that they differ in many ways, such as how to perceive the world, how to tackle problems and how to approach people. 专业英语四级(阅读)模拟试卷120(题后含答案及解析)题型有:1. 2.SECTION AIn this section there are several passages followed by ten multiple-choice questions. For each question, there are four suggested answers marked [A], [B], [C] and [D]. Choose the one that you think is the best answer.(1)Job stress and worrying about job security can both take a toll on a woman’s body, although the two issues affect female health differently, according to research presented last month at the American Heart Association’s Annual Meeting in Chicago. But whether chronic work-related stress is eating at your nerves or ballooning your waistline, there are natural solutions with no toxic side effects that you can use to relax the pressure. (2)In a recent study looking at work stress and women, researchers from Harvard and Brigham and Women’s Hospital studied more than 17,000 otherwise healthy women, generally in their 50s, enrolled in the Women’s Health Study for 10 years. Women who reported work-related strain, such as having little or no authority over decisions or being unable to contribute creativity and skills to the job, were up to 88 percent more likely to experience a heart attack than women who reported no work strain. Overall, working women reporting high job strain faced a 40 percent higher rate of cardiovascular(心血管的)disease, too. (3)Worrying about losing a job did not appear to increase heart attack risk, but it was linked to obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol(胆固醇), all of which can eventually lead to cardiovascular disease. (4)Whether it’s a nightmarish cubicle neighbor, an unrelenting workload, or an ornery boss that has your stress meter ready to pop at any second, you can get a grip: It’s all about mind over matter. An August study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that students taking part in Integrative Body-Mind Training(IBMT)enjoyed changes in white brain matter(within 11 hours of practice)that seemed connected to better regulation of emotions and behavior. (5)Although not very common in the U.S. yet, IBMT involves the practice of maintaining a state of restful alertness to tap into body-mind awareness while a trained coach guides your breathing and mental imagery. It’s somewhat similar to more widely available mindfulness based stress reduction(MBSR), which involves focusing on your present-moment draughts and feelings in a non-judgmental way. MBSR has been shown to help people make clearer decisions in times of crisis, which could help when all health breaks loose at the office.(6)Previous research out of the University of Oregon has found that you could adopt stress-zapping properties of Integrative Body-Mind Training(IBMT)before the workweek’s out. After practicing it for 20 minutes a day for five days in a row, participants reported reduced stress and increased energy. Prevention suggests this intro IBMT exercise: Sit quietly in a comfortable position. Close your eyes and think of your mind as a full cup; as thoughts come and go, keep returning to an image of the cup becoming empty. Repeat for five minutes. (7)Regardless of your meditationstyle, know this: Compared to non-meditators, women who practice meditation enjoy up to a 66 percent drop in stress hormone levels, which can dramatically improve heart health. (8)If you’re in need of an emergency quick freak-out fix, reach for a piece of gum.(Avoid artificial sweetened gum, though—some are linked to health issues.)One study found that chewing gum boosts blood flow to the brain by up to 40 percent, helping you stay calm and in the present. This prevents you from pondering over some aggravating office event. (9)You don’t need to be a monk to enjoy the benefits of meditation. In fact, more and more Western integrative medicine practitioners are using it as a nontoxic health improver.1.According to the passage, which of the following can probably lead to women’s work-related strain?A.They are not creative enough in their work.B.They could not afford to lose their job.C.They have no say in decision-making.D.They are underpaid compared with men.正确答案:C解析:根据work—related strain定位到第2段。

They meet weekly or fortnightly or on the birthday of one of the members, who play host in turn. You should write at least 150 words and base your composition on the outline given in Chinese below:1. 阅读在英语学习中的作用2. 如何利用阅读提高英语水平3. 你的看法Sample Answers:Part I:The Differences between Studying English in China and Studying English in an English-Speaking CountryStudying English in China and studying English in an English-speaking country are two completely different experiences. In China, the focus of English education tends to be on grammar rules, vocabulary memorization, and test preparation. Students spend a lot of time learning the language in a classroom setting, which can be effective for improving their reading and writing skills. However, they often lack the opportunity to practice speaking and listening in real-life situations. On the other hand, studying English in an English-speaking country provides students with immersion in the language and culture. They have the chance to interact with native speakers on a daily basis, which helps them improve their speaking and listening skills dramatically. They also have access to authentic materials such as newspapers, magazines, and movies, which can enhance their reading and listening abilities.Personally, I believe that studying English in anEnglish-speaking country is more effective in terms of language acquisition. However, studying English in China can also be beneficial if students make an effort to practice speaking and listening outside of the classroom.Part II:The Importance of Reading in English LearningReading plays a crucial role in English learning as it helps students improve their vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension skills. By reading extensively, students are exposed to a wide range of words and sentence structures, which can help them express themselves more clearly and fluently. Additionally, reading provides insight into the culture and customs of English-speaking countries, which is essential for effective communication. To utilize reading to improve their English proficiency, students should read a variety of materials such as newspapers, novels, and academic articles. They should also make a habit of looking up unfamiliar words and phrases to expand their vocabulary. Furthermore, students can practice reading aloud to improve their pronunciation and intonation. In my opinion, reading is a vital component of English learning that should not be overlooked. It not only enhances language skills but also broadens the mind and enriches one's understanding of the world.Overall, by recognizing the differences between studying English in China and studying English in an English-speaking country, as well as the importance of reading in English learning, students can effectively improve their English proficiency and communication skills.。

The rain fell heavily, it fell continuously and it saturated everything which lay in its way.During the rain most people kept to their homes. But a few walked about, 45 the wetness of their clothes and determined to carry on as usual. And, for those who wished to keep dry however much it cost them, there were always the taxis. They 46 along the road, with the windscreen wipers revealing only 47 glimpses of the drivers' peering faces. But often the faces inside the taxi ceased to 50 to look out at all, for water had splashed up to the electrical system, and the engine stopped just as surly and abruptly as it would have done. The car had actually skidded into the drains after it had so 51 missed only a few moments.PART ⅤREADING COMPREHENSIONSECTION A MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUESTIONSIn this section there are several passages followed by ten multiple-choice questions. For each question, there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer and mark your answers onANSWER SHEET TWO.PASSAGE ONEThe majority of successful senior managers do not closely follow the classical rational model of first clarifying goals, assessing the problem, formulating options, estimating likelihoods of success, making a decision, and only then taking action to implement the decision. Rather, in their day-by-day tactical maneuvers, these senior executives rely on what is vaguely termed "intuition" to manage a network of interrelated problems that require them to deal with ambiguity, inconsistency, novelty, and surprise; and to integrate action into the process of thinking.Generations of writers on management have recognized that some practicing managers rely heavily on intuition. In general, however, such writers display a poor grasp of what intuition is. Some see it as the opposite of rationality; others view it as an excuse for capriciousness.Isenberg's recent research on the cognitive processes of senior managers reveals that managers' intuition is neither of these. Rather, senior managers use intuition in at least five distinct ways. First, they intuitively sense when a problem exists. Second, managers rely on intuition to perform well-learned behavior patterns rapidly. This intuition is not arbitrary or irrational, but is based on years of painstaking practice and hands-on experience that build skills. A third function of intuition is to synthesize isolated bits of data and practice into an integrated picture, often in an "Aha!" experience. Fourth, some managers use intuition as a check on the results of more rational analysis. Most senior executives are familiar with the formal decision analysis models and tools, and those who use such systematic methods for reaching decisions are occasionally leery of solutions suggested by these methods which run counter to their sense of the correct course of action. Finally, managers can use intuition to bypass in-depth analysis and move rapidly to engender a plausible solution. Used in this way, intuition is an almost instantaneous cognitive process in which a manager recognizes patterns. One of the implications of the intuitive style of executive management is that "thinking" is inseparable from acting. Since managers often "know" what is right before they can analyze and explain it, they frequently act first and explain later. Analysis is inextricably tied to action in thinking/acting cycles, in which managers develop thoughts about their companies and organizations not by analyzing a problematic situation and then acting, but by acting and analyzing in close concert.PASSAGE TWORemember the Stone Age days of research back in elementary school and middle school? We would spend countless hours digesting the information we could find on index cards. Do you recall using those ancient computers that ran with the Gopher program or some generic database whose name connoted a marmot that could take halt" an hour to find Moby Dick?Well, all I have to say can be summed up in five words: Thank God For The Internet! Screw going to the library! I have access to dozens of databases, journals, and collections of literature right at my fingertips. I can complete all of my research at home and no longer must run amok in the library, stressing out while trying to findShakespeare's The Tempest or some other book, all the while trying to block out the noisy study groups who have forgotten what the "silence policy of libraries" means. If you recall the flood epidemic that hit Colorado State University just a couple summers ago, that natural disaster wreaked havoc all over campus. A large portion of journals and texts were located in our libraries' basement which completely filled up with about 10 feet of rain water in a matter of hours. The Lory Student Center's basement was also flooded and that was where the university bookstore was located. This forced almost every professor to order new textbooks and that really put a dent in our wallets. Many students here, myself included, still have to face the disappointment of searching for a particular book or journal for a last minute paper, only to find out that the certain item was a casualty of the flood. Thanks to the Internet, the university implemented the Inter-Library Loan system. Several universities around Colorado have generously aided us in our research endeavors by loaning any resource we need for at least two to three weeks. All we have to do is type in a request and five other university libraries automatically search for that information.Without this program, I may have failed several papers and projects. I would have had to spend my nights running from public library to public library around the state just to find a certain article or novel. The World Wide Web has also given us the capability to order any textbook at a ranch lower price than the university bookstores charge. Hey, we're all college students and we're usually broke, so anytime we can find a deal or discount that will save us a few bucks, we will gladly take it.And last but not least, for those of us who are constantly homesick, have a special someone far away or still want to keep in touch with pals, we have e-mail. Like most of you, I moved away from home to go to school and my high school friends spread out across the globe. Instead of wasting money on stationery and envelopes and stamps (which seem to increase in price about every year), I can chat with everyone through the Internet. Plus, scanning has allowed us to send pictures to our sweethearts, friends, and family who have forgotten what we look like. So, I'm asking everyone to get on their hands and knees and to pay homage to the tele-communications god, the Internet.PASSAGE THREEUntil the end of the 18th century, it was men who lavished attention on their feet. Louis XIV wore high heeled mules to show off his shapely legs; his courtiers adorned their figures and feet with feathers, pink silk, lace, and jewels; even in colonial American, men fussed with their wigs and the bows and buttons on their shoes. The end of that foppery, called "the great renunciation" by historians, coincided with an epochal shift in politics and society, toward democracy, industry, and reason, away from the aristocracy with its affectations that spoke of rank, parasitism and, to the modern eyes, effeminacy.Women's fashion is now, some believe, at the turning point of similar magnitude, coinciding with the equally dramatic social transformation of the past several decades. The change has been slow: a century long move away from thepadding, corseting, and decoration that made a woman into a kind of ornate bauble (小摆设) and displayed her family's wealth, and toward the clean, sleek modern lines first introduced with the suffrage movement. But the shift has accelerated in recent years, thanks to changes in the technology and business of fashion. The use by top designers of "weird, fabulous, unrecognizable synthetics," says Hollander "has ruined the status of certain fabrics, like linen, which has had a leveling effect for the sexes and for the classes." And the emergence of chains like Club Monaco means that "forward looking style is disseminated very fast and very cheaply," according to Valerie Steele, a historian and curator of "Shoes: A Lexicon of Style," an exhibition now on view at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology. Such stores have succeeded, she believes, because "there's substantial group of people with a sophisticated eye for design" who are eager for an affordable version of what was once thought to be "dog-whistle fashion," pitched so high that only a few would get it. Against that background, the shoes at FIT look like fashion's last gasp. The exhibit begins with the most symbolically loaded of women's shoes: high heels, which Steele calls "a prime symbol of women's sexual power over men."That same defiance of feminine expectations is visible throughout the FIT show: in the boot, for instance, with its connotations of machismo and military power, or the androgynous oxford, made girlish with a big chunky heel. The show ends, fittingly, with the sneaker. No longer simply a downscale kid wear item, the big, brilliantly colored, high-tech sneaker has become one of the today's most dramatic fashion statements, asserting street hip and futuristic velocity. Maybe shoes aren't so indifferent to the changes in modern lives, after all.PASSAGE FOURPresident will make his case for his $1.6 trillion tax cut plan, delivering a speech at a community center in St. Louis. The proposal would slash federal tax rates across all levels of income, eliminate the so-called marriage penalty and phase out estate taxes. Democrats complain that the plan—which would cut the top rate from 39 to 33 percent—would disproportionately benefit the wealthy and unnecessarily squander expected budget surpluses. Some of the richest Americans are urging Congress not to repeal the estate tax, The New York Times reported on Wednesday, Feb. 14.About 120 wealthy Americans had signed or supported a petition to oppose phasing out the tax. President Bush has included the repeal of the tax in his $1.6 trillion tax cut proposal. Normally when "dozens" of Americans join in a political cause, it is not particularly noteworthy, but in this case the dozens include: George Soros, a billionaire financier; Warren Buffett, an investor listed as America's fourth-richest person; the philanthropist David Rockefeller Jr.; and William Gates Sr., a Seattle lawyer and father of America's richest man, Microsoft Corp. Chairman Bill Gates. It was refreshing to see Buffett and George Soros and a number of other extremely wealthy luminaries stand up in opposition to President Bush's proposed repeal of the estate tax. While the policy has some emotional attractions—it wouldprotect the inheritors of some small businesses from having to sell the companies to pay taxes, and it is true that most people have been taxed on their savings once already—in practice the tax repeal would mainly be a windfall for a very small number of very, very rich people.Buffett and company cite these factors in their petition calling for opposition to the estate-tax repeal. They also discuss something that's equally emotional and far more complex: the principle of meritocracy. The idea that everyone in America has an equal chance, that our fates are not determined by accidents of birth, is one of our core values. And nowhere is this principle more revered than in the technology economy; entrepreneurship is almost by definition an expression of meritocracy. The petitioners argue that repealing the tax will cost the Treasury billions of dollars in lost revenues and will result in either increased taxes in the long run or cuts to Medicare, Social Security, environmental protection and other government programs.Repealing the levy "would enrich the heirs of America's millionaires and billionaires, while hurting families who struggle to make ends meet," the petition says.Buffett told the Times that repealing the estate tax would be a "terrible mistake" and the equivalent of "choosing the 2020 Olympic team by picking the eldest sons of the gold-medal winners in the 2000 Olympics."An old brokerage commercial says: "He made his money the old-fashioned way: He earned it." There was a perfect parody of the ad in which the line read: "He made his money the old-fashioned way: He inherited it." In 20 or 50 or 100 years, which of these lines will be right? Buffett and Soros and friends, to their credit, want to help make the first one real. Let's hope this is only one step in that process.52、The classical model of decision analysis includes all EXCEPT ______.(PASSAGE ONE.A. evaluation of a problemB. establishment of clear goals to be reached by the decisionC. action undertaken in order to discover more information about a problemD. comparison of the probable effects of different solutions to a problem53、How the writers on management understand intuition can be best described as ______.(PASSAGE ONE.A. contradictoryB. irrationalC. insightfulD. vague54、In the author's view, senior managers do NOT use intuition to ______.(PASSAGE ONE.A. speed up the creation of a solution to a problemB. identify a problemC. specify clear goalsD. evaluate possible solutions to a problem55、The word "havoc" in the third paragraph means ______.(PASSAGE TWO)A. great concernB. widespread horrorC. long-lasting influenceD. great damage ordestruction56、What is the disappointment many students have to face in finishing their paper?(PASSAGE TWO)A. American “individualism” is considered a good thing, and is regarded as a good quality; it does not mean being selfish. Each person is expected to make decisions for himself about all aspects of life. The nuclear family is an important aspect of American society, but usually has much less influence on the behavior of any individual in it than is generally true in Eastern countries. Children are encouraged from an early age to be self-reliant. Parents provide advice and assistance, especially when their children are young, but the importance of the individual is stressed. This is reflected in American expression such as “You are the master of your own fate.”Americans assume a greater responsibility for the decisions they make and the actions they take. This principle applies to all aspects of life, including the family, social relations, finance, business, law and medicine.PART II LISTENING COMPREHENSION (20 MIN)Directions: In Sections A, B and C you will hear everything ONCE ONLY. But this is not true, according to Dr. Jarvik, professor of psychiatry at the University of California. She has studied the mental functioning of aging persons for several years. For example, one of her studies concerns 136 pairs of identical twins, who were first examined when they were already 60 years old. As Dr. Jarvik continued the study of the twins into their 70’s and 80’s, their minds did not generally decline as was expected. However, there was some decline in their psychomotor speed. This means that it took them longer to accomplish mental tasks than it used to.But when speed was not a factor, they lost very little intellectual ability over the years. In general Dr. Jarvik’s studies have shown that there is no decline in knowledge or reasoning ability. This is true not only with those in their 30’s and 40’s, but with those in their 60’s and 70’s as well. In the cases where the older person’s mind really seems to decay, it is not necessarily a sign of decay due to old age. Often it is simply a sign of a depressed emotional state.12.According to Dr. Jaryik’s studies, middle-aged and older persons would expect to ______.A.remember lessB.reason betterC.learn fewer thingsD.lose no intellectual ability正确答案:D13.Mental decay due to aging is ______.A.commonB.much more common than most people believeC.much less common than most people believeD.true of those over sixty正确答案:C14.A long-term study of 136 pairs of twins showed that ______.A.they lost a little ability to reason over the yearsB.the only factor which declined over the years was their speed with which to perform mental tasksC.their memory was not as good as it had once beenD.their minds became a bit more active as they grew older正确答案:B听力原文:In Britain, ff you are found guilty of a crime, you can be sent to prison or be fined or be ordered to do community work, such as tidying public places and helping the old. Many prisons were built over 100 years ago. But the government will have built 11 new prisons by next year. There are two sorts of prisons--the open sort and the dosed sort. In the closed sort, prisoners are given very little freedom. They spend three to ten hours outside the cells when they exercise, eat, study, learn skills, watch TV and talk to the other prisoners. All prisoners are expected to work. Most of them are paid for what they do, whether it is doing maintenance or cooking and cleaning. But insects have developed ways of dealing with them and, in fact, have been eating plants for about 250 million years. Now insects are using these same mechanisms to deal with man-made poisons--insecticides. This is why resistance of insects to insecticides has developed so rapidly. What should be done? Scientists studying the problem suggest that farmers use less insecticides. At the moment, farmers regularly spray crops as a precaution against problems that are caused by large numbers of pests. They should, instead, spray only where pests have actually been seen. Secondly, farmers could use a combination of two or three insecticides at once. To survive, the insects would need to become resistant to two or more insecticides at the same time. The most surprising suggestion, perhaps, is that at certain times of the year, farmers should actually try to at-tract insects onto the crops they are trying to protect. The new insects will mate with those which survived from a certain kind of insecticide and will lessen the latter’s resistance to it. Wednesday’s meeting was an opportunity for leaders of East Timorese groups and development experts to discuss World Bank proposals to rebuild the ravaged territory. Humanitarian issues headed the agenda. Providing basic needs such as food, medicine and shelter are still major concerns. Developing a system of government and rebuilding the economy were also urgent issues. Observers in Tokyo expressed hope that Wednesday’s meeting was a sign that the many factions in East Timor will begin to dissolve and new groups with a common goal of rebuilding the territory will emerge. The World Bank estimates the cost of reconstruction in East Timor will be between 260 and 300 million dollars over the next 3 years. Donor countries including Japan, Australia and the United States will meet here on Friday under World Bank auspices to pledge contributions to meet those needs. Are you her class teacher, Mrs. Daniels?D: Yes, that’s fight. Now, just let me find my notes. As you know I don’t actually teach Tracey, but I do see her every day before classes begin, is there anything you want to ask me?T: Well, yes. To be honest, we’re a bit worried about her last report--she doesn’t seem to be doing as well as she was.D: Well now, let’s see. Oh, yes, her math teacher says she’s finding the work more difficultnow that they’re getting near to the exams.T: I was never good at math.D: And Dr. Baker feels that Tracey isn’t concentrating very hard in biology lessons.T: Oh, but she really likes biology and she’s so good at drawing.D: Yes, but even in art her teacher thinks she tends to spend too much time talking to her friends. In fact, several of her teachers have told me that she isn’t giving in her homework. Mr. Brock has complained to me that he hasn’t had a single piece of geography homework from her all term.T: Yes, we don’t know what to do about it. She doesn’t seem to be interested in school any more.D: I don’t think we should give up on her. Tracey’s a very intelligent girl. In English her marks are well above the average and her teacher says she always has a lot to say in lessons.T: Yes, that’s part of Tracey’s trouble. She talks too much.D: Well, nevertheless oral skills are very important and if we can all guide her back to a more positive attitude to school work, she’ll do very well.T: Well, I hope so. I’m very disappointed in her. She was doing so well, especially in English and French, and now everything seems to be going to pieces. She came bottom of the class in French this term.D: Well, it’s not because she can’t do French--she just prefers to that in English! At least she’s doing well in sport. She’s in the hockey team and you know we haven’t lost a single match this year!T: Well, it’s nice to know she does something well.D: Oh, come on, Mr. Thompson, let’s look on the bright side.2.What does Mrs. Daniels teach?A.She teaches Tracey English.B.She teaches Tracey math.C.She teaches Tracey art.D.She doesn’t teach Tracey.正确答案:D解析:根据对话中提到的“I don’t actually teach Tracey...”可知答案为D 。

2011英语专业四级考试真题及答案
听写:British holidaying habits
In the late 1970s, air travel became affordable for the average family in the UK, and more people started travelling abroad for their summer holidays. After all, the British weather wasn’t very good, even in s ummer, so a lot of people left the country for a vacation.
In the 1980s and 1990s, young people in the UK became wealthier on average. As a result, they started to go abroad in groups, to places such as Spain and Greece. Once they arrived at their destination, they met with other groups of young people and had one long party.
British holidaying habits have begun to change, however. Climate change means that the UK now has a hotter climate, so people do not need to go overseas to find good weather. Also, going abroad is more expensive. As a result, more British people are choosing to spend their summer holidays in the UK.

大作文:Should private car owners be taxed for pollution?
私家车主是否应交污染税?
With the development of society, many people can afford a car. As the number of the cars is rising, we are facing some problems. One big problem is the pollution caused by the use of cars. In order to solve this problem, government agencies in some big cities recently suggest that a “pollution tax” should be put on private cars in order to control the number of cars and reduce pollution in the city. For my part, I agree to this viewpoint, and my reasons are as follows:
To begin with, cars contribute to the environmental pollution. For example, a lot of big cities in China are now plagued by serious air pollution. Then it is the responsibility of these private car owners to pay for the pollution and they should be taxed. The purpose of collecting environmental pollution tax is to raise the fund, and then utilize the tax revenue lever to protect our environment.
Secondly, it is a good way to raise people’s environmental awarenes s by putting a pollution tax on private cars. If people suffer from the financial loss when making a decision, they will think more about their decision. Then they will consider more when deciding to buy a private car. Consequently, the
increase rate of the number of the private cars can be controlled.
In a word, it is a very good and necessary attempt to use the means of taxation to treat the pollution. Of course, it must be kept in mind that all people, including the private car owners, should try their best to protect the environment.
