Winston Smith, his chin nuzzled into his breast in an effort to escape the vile wind, slipped quickly through the glass doors of Victory Mansions, though not quickly enough to prevent a swirl of gritty dust from entering along with him.

The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. At one end of it a coloured poster, too large for indoor display, had been tacked to the wall. It depicted simply an enormous face, more than a metre wide: the face of a man of aboutforty-five, with a heavy black moustache and ruggedly handsome features.

Chapter V
Summary — Climax
In Room 101, O’Brien strapped Winston to a chair, then clamped Winston’s head so that he couldn’t move. He told Winston that Room 101 contained “the worst thing in the world.” He reminded Winston of his worst nightmare—the dream of being in a dark place with something terrible on the other side of the wall—and informed him that rats are on the other side of the wall. O’Brien picked up a cage full of enormous, squirming rats and places it near Winston. He said that when he pressed a lever, the door would slide up and the rats would leap onto Winston’s face and eat it. With the starving rats just inches away, Winston broke down. He screamed that he wanted O’Brien to subject Julia to this torture instead of him. O’Brien, satisfied by this betrayal, removed the cage.

This constant surveillance serves to instill fear and obedience in the citizens of Oceania.Loss of Individual Freedom: In Oceania, individualism is suppressed in favor of loyalty to the Party. Citizens are expected to conform to the Party's beliefs and behaviors, and any deviation is punished harshly.Rebellion: Winston's rebellion against the Party is ultimately futile, as the Party's control is too strong to overcome. The novel illustrates the difficulty of resisting a totalitarian regime and the consequences of defiance.Conclusion1984 is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that remains relevant in today's world.
