• For a wrong word, underline the wrong word and write the correct one in the blank provided at the end of the line.
• For a missing word, mark the position of the missing word with a “/\”sign and write the word you believe to be missing in the blank provided at the end of the line.
People of all races and languages make rather similar noises in return to pain or pleasure. The fact that such noises are similar on the lips of Frenchmen and Malaysians whose languages are utterly different, serves to emphasize on the fundamental difference between these noises and language proper. We may say that the cries of pain or chortles of amusement are largely reflex actions, instinctive to large extent, whereas language proper does not consist of signs but of these that have to be learnt and that are wholly conventional.

From what has been said, it must be clear that no one make very positive statements about how language originated. There is no material in any language today and in the earliest records of ancient languages show us language in a new and emerging state. It is often said, of course, that the language originated in cries of anger, fear, pain and pleasure, and the necessary evidence is entirely lacking: there are no remote tribes, no ancient records, providing evidence of a language with a large proportion of such cries than we find in English. It is true that the absence of such evidence does not disprove the theory, but in other grounds too the theory is not very attractive.

• 教学大纲(《高等学校英语专业英语教学大纲》 2002:2)对八级语法和词汇的要求构成了八 级考试大纲中改错部分的命题依据。
• 教学大纲对八级在语法上的要求为:熟练地使 用各种衔接手段,连贯地表达思想;

2. 考纲分析
• 《高校英语专业八级考试大纲》(2004版)对改 错部分的具体规定为:
• 测试要求:能运用语法、词汇、修辞等语言知识识 别所给短文内的语病并提出改正方法。
• 测试形式:本部分为主观试题,共10题。考试时间 15分钟。
本部分由一篇约250个单词的短文组成,短文中有 10行标有题号。该10行内均含有1个语误。要求学 生根据“增添”、“删除”、或“改变其中的某一 单词或短语”三种方法中的一种改正语误。
