Gene Ontology Annotation
Zixia Huang
Brief description of Gene Ontology
The Gene Ontology project is a major bioinformatics initiative with the aim of standardizing the presentation of gene and gene product attributes across species and databases. GO has been developing for more than one decade, absorbing wide scopes of databases such as animal, plant and microbe.
GO provides a controlled vocabulary of terms for describing gene product characteristics and gene product annotation data, including biological process, cellular component and molecular function. Each gene product may belong to different Gene Ontology in that one may be a part of cell component, while simultaneously functions as a catalyst belonging to molecular function Ontology. Therefore, we can find particular gene product in different Ontology in accordance with your requirement.
GO consortium provides us a standardization description of gene products in different levels, which facilitates us to acquaint with these products hierarchically during biochemical processes.
Overview of GO annotation for three species
After pre-blast process, the unigenes that had blast hits are going to be collected together for GO annotation. And then, these reads are blasted against Unipro-trembl database to obtain more information for Unipro-trembl database is full of GO annotations. The results of GO annotation of three species are listed below:
Because each GO term may date back to different GO databases, the proportion of each part will be portrayed in the following charts.
GO distribution for diversicolor
GO distribution for marine
microalga
GO distribution for oyster
Detailed GO annotation of the three species
Above are the distributions of three major categories, however there are still many subcategories underneath. For biological process, it has several sublevels like cell killing, growth, biological regulation and so on. Therefore, we select some representative terms or terms of our interest to investigate the components of each GO term, and the detailed categories of GO annotations are listed:
