Eating Tangyuan/Yuanxiao
What's the inevitable food eaten at the Lantern Festival? The answer is tangyuan, or yuanxiao. Some may consider tangyuan and yuanxiao are the same. Well, they are both traditional Chinese foods made from glutinous rice flour mixed with a small amount of water to form balls and then cooked and served in boiling water.
But there is a slight difference between them. Tangyuan is made bystuffingthe rice flour ball with filings, but to make yuanxiao, you need to make the filings first then cover it with glutinous rice flour. Besides, most people in the southern part of China havetangyuan while yuanxiao is more common in the northernpart of China.
Traditionally, the balls are stuffed withsweet black sesame paste, although the fillings can vary. Tangyuan is eaten during Lantern Festival because it is a homophone for union.
Lighting lanterns
Watching lanternsis one of the important activities of Lantern festival. This tradition can date backto Han Dynasty
(206BC-AD220) when Buddhism began to flourish in China. Emperor Ming of Han Dynasty heard that Buddhist monks wouldwatch sarira (pearlor crystal-like bead-shaped objects that are purportedly found among the crematedashes of Buddhist spiritual masters),and light lanternsto worship Buddha on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month.
So he ordered to light lanterns in the imperial palace and temples to show respect to Buddha on this day. All people, from the gentry class to the common people, were required to light lanterns . Later, this Buddhist rite developed into a grand festival among common people and its influence expanded from the central plains to the whole of China.
Nowadays, people hang lanterns of various shapes and colours around households, parks, streets and other public spaces.
Lantern riddles
Another tradition of Lantern festival is solving lantern riddles, which has become quite popular since Song dynasty. People would write a riddle on a piece of paper and stick it on the lanterns. Those who can solve it can pull the riddle offand if they guess it correctly, they can win some little gifts.
