Renaissance:period of the revival,of classical arts and literature after the dark ages of medieval obscurantism. During Renaissance, great advances were made in education and science.

Sonnet:a fourteen-line lyric poem,usually structured of three quatrains and a terminal couplet in iambic pentameter with the rhyme pattern abab cdcd efef gg.A sonnet generally expresses a single theme or idea.

Enlightenment: the enlightenment on the whole, was an expression of struggle of the then progressive class of bourgeois against feudalism, the inequality, stagnation, prejudices and other survivals of feudalism. They attempted to place all branches of science at the service of mankind by connecting them with the actual deeds and requirements of the people. Romanticism: a movement in art and literature in the 18th and 19th centuries in revolt of the English imagination against the neoclassicism of the previous centuries.

Dramatic monologue: to be a dramatic monologue a poem must have a speaker and an implied auditor, and that the reader often perceives a gap between what that speaker says and what he or she actually reveals.

Aesthetic movement: The doctrine or disposition that regards beauty as an end in itself. It first flourished in the field of art in the 1840s Britain. In the 1880s and 90s, it developed into its summit.

Stream of consciousness: an important device of modern fiction; refers to continuous flow of sense-perceptions, thoughts, feelings and memories in human mind; or a literary method of representing such a blending of mental processes in fictional characters, usually in an unpunctuated or disjointed form of interior monologue.

Chaucer’s Contribution to English Literature Chaucer is regarded as the founder of English poetry and has been called “the founder of English realism.” He is the firs t great poet who wrote in the English language.
