ARock music in one form or another is the most popular type of music all over the world. But where did it come from?Rock began in t he USA in the early 1950s. At that time, “rhythm and blue” music was very popular with black Americans. “R&B” was a mixture of black religious music and jazz. It had strong rhythms that you could dance to and simple, fast words.Noticing the success of R&B music, white musicians started to copy the same style. By the mid1950s, this new white R&B music, called rock ’n’ roll, had become very popular. Singers like Elvis Presley and Bill Haley attracted millions of teenage fans. Their music was fast and loud. Many older people thought that rock ’n’ roll was very dangerous.By the early 1960s, even rock ’n’ roll had become oldfashioned. Many of the songs had begun to sound the same. It was at that time that a new group from England became popular — the Beatles. The Beatles first started by singing American style songs, but they soon developed their own style, with more complicated tunes. They also introduced different instruments. Groups like the Beatles had a very important influence on the style of popular music.By the early 1970s, rock ’n’ roll had developed into a new form of music. Electronics had replaced the amplified guitars and drums of rock ’n’ roll. “Rock” had arrived.Rock music had continued to change and develop. It had combined with music from different parts of the world. Today, there are hundreds of different types of rock music, and almost every country has its own form of rock.语篇解读:本文介绍了摇滚乐的发展史。

It doesn't matter where you live—in the middle of a modern city, or a faraway village—the chances that you will be disturbed by jet aeroplanes, transistor radios, oilpowered engines, etc, are almost everywhere. We seem to be getting used to noise, too. Some people feel quite lonely without background_music while they are working.Scientific tests have shown that total silence can be a very frightening experience for human beings. However, some people enjoy listening to pop music which is very loud, and this can do harm to their eardrums(耳鼓). The noise level in some disco is far above the usual safety level for heavy industrial areas. One recent report about noise and concentration(专心) suggested that although a lot of people say that any noise disturbs their concentration, what really affects their ability to concentrate is a change in the level of noise. It goes on to say that a background noise, which doesn't change too much (music, for example ) may even help people to concentrate.1. The best title for this passage is “________”.A. Noisy lifeB. Background noiseC. Disturbed concentrationD. Changeable noise2. But a long time ago, it wasn't easy at all. Before 1750,people never tried skating on wheels. That changed because of a man named Joseph Merlin. His work was making instruments. He liked to play the violin in his free time. Joseph Merlin was a man of ideas and dreams. People called him a dreamer. One day he received an invitation to go to an important party. He was pleased and a little excited. As the day of the party came near, Merlin began to think how to make an amazing entrance at the party. He had an idea. He thought he would attract a lot of attention if he could skate into the room.Merlin tried different ways to make himself roll. Finally, he decided to put two wheels under each shoe. These were the first roller skates. Merlin was very proud of his invention and dreamed of arriving at the party on wheels while playing the violin. He was sure that everyone would be very surprised. On the night of the party Merlin rolled into the room, playing his violin. Everyone was reallysurprised to see him. There was just one problem. Merlin had no way to stop his roller skates. He rolled on and on. Suddenly, he ran into a huge mirror that was hanging on the wall. The mirror fell down, breaking into pieces. Merlin's idea was so good that nobody forgot his special entrance for a long time.5. According to the passage, people began to enjoy roller skating ________.A. before the year 1750B. before the invitationC. because of Joseph MerlinD. because it was dangerous6. It's 25 days before Christmas. It's after Thanksgiving and often the first day of Christmas shopping. At this time, we see ads in newspapers and on TV tellingus to “buy, buy, buy”!The idea for Buy Nothing Day started in Vancouver, British Columbia. Now people all over the world celebrate Buy Nothing Day. In California, parents and children get together to read stories, sing songs, and paint pictures. The children talk about why they don't need a lot of toys. This year, in Manchester, England, people dressed up to tell people that we buy too much.In Albuquerque, New Mexico, high school students wanted to tell other students about Buy Nothing Day. They organized a spaghetti dinner to give people information about Buy Nothing Day. They asked restaurants in the neighbourhood to donate the food. According to the British newspaper The Times,“The Lang Lang effect” is responsible for driving 36 million Chinese children to learn the piano. Now in China children are learning Chopin(肖邦) and Western orchestras are touring Chinese cities, but can China ever export(出口) its own music to the West? Lang is trying. His cooperation with the London Symphony Orchestra includes a performance of Dragon Songs, and an album of traditional Chinese classics.Behind the international recognition, however, is a fascinating story of a gifted child. Lang grew up with his father's own musical ambition and high expectations. It is not hard to imagine how boring it must be to practise the piano every day. D.Minnesota IT.DLong bus rides are like television shows. They have a beginning,a middle, and an end with commercials(商业广告)thrown in every three or four minutes. The commercials are unavoidable. They happen whether you want them or not.Every couple of minutes a billboard glides by outside the bus window.“Buy Super Clean Toothpaste.”“Drink Good Wet Root Beer.”“Fill up with Pacific Gas.”Only if you sleep, which is equal to turning the television set off,are you spared the unending cry of“You Need It!Buy It Now!”【出处:21教育名师】The beginning of the ride is comfortable and somewhat exciting, even if you've traveled that way ually some things have changed new houses, new buildings, sometimes even a new road. The bus driver has a style of driving and it's fun to try to figure it out the first hour or so.If the driver is particularly reckless(鲁莽的)or daring, the ride can be as thrilling(惊心动魄的)as a suspense story. Will the driver pass the truck in time? Will the driver move into the right or the left hand lane? After a while,of course, the excitement dies down.Sleeping for a while helps pass the middle hours of the ride.Food always makes bus rides moreinteresting. But you've got to be careful of what kind of food you eat.Too much salty food can make you very thirsty between stops. The end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning. You know it will soon be over and there's a kind of expectation and hours have passed.By now you've sat with your legs crossed, with your hands in your lap, with your hands on the armrests even with your hands crossed behind your head. The end comes just at no more ways to sit.51.According to the passage, what do the passengers usually see when they are on a long bus trip?________A.Buses on the road.B.Films on television.C.Advertisements on the billboards.D.Gas stations52.What is the purpose of this passage?________A.To give the writer's opinion about long bus trips.B.To persuade you to take a long bus trip.C.To explain how bus trips and television shows differ.D.To describe the billboards along the road.53.The writer of this passage would probably favor________.A.bus drivers who aren't recklessB.driving aloneC.a television set on the busD.no billboards along the road54.The writer feels long bus rides are like TV shows because ________.A.the commercials both on TV shows and on billboards along the road are fun B.they both have a beginning,a middle, and an end, with commercials in between C.the drivers are always reckless on TV shows just as they are on buses D.both traveling and watching TV are not exciting55.The writer thinks that the end of the ride is somewhat like the beginning because both are ________.A.exciting B.comfortableC.tiring D.boringⅣ.阅读表达(共5小题;每小题3分,满分15分)[1]Fear and pain are two of the most useful things that human beings and animalshave, if they are properly used.If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play with it until their hands were burnt away.Similarly, if pain existed but fear didn't, a child would burn himself again and again, because fear would not warn himself to keep away from the fire that had burnt himself before.A really fearless soldier is not a good soldier because he will soon be killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army.Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which human beings and animals might soon die out.[2]In our first sentence we suggested that fear should be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much.Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: A plane may crash on your house, or you may get cancer![3]The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but to use fear as your servant and guide instead.Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.[4]In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you.Fear warns you, then you jump out of the way, and all is well.[5]In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to ________.For example, you can't prevent a plane crashing onto your house. In this case, fear is no longer of any use, and you have to try to overcome it.56.What is mainly talked about in this passage?(no more than 15 words) ________________________________________________________57.How does the author support his idea in Paragraph 2?(no more than 5 words) ________________________________________________________58.Why does the author say that a fearless soldier is not a good soldier?(no more than 15 words)________________________________________________________59.What benefit can we get from“fear”according to the passage?(no more than 10 words)________________________________________________________60.Fill in the blank in Paragraph 5 with proper words.(no more than 5 words) ________________________________________________________Ⅴ.写作(满分30分)请根据下列提示,写一篇120~150词的英语短文,介绍人民音乐家聂耳。

I realize that this is not true for everybody. Many people get along quite well without going to the concert, or listening to the record. But music plays an important part in everyone's life, whether he realizes it or not. Try to imagine, for example, what films or TV plays would be like without music. Would the feelings, the moving plots and the greatest interests, be so exciting or dramatic?I'm not sure about it.Now we have been speaking of music in its more common meaning—the kind of music we hear in the concert hall; we discover them in our everyday life too—in the rhythm of the sea, the melody of a bird in the woods and so on. So music surely has meaning for everyone,in some way or other. And,of course, it has special meaning for those who have spent all their lives working on playing or writing music. It is well said, “Through music a child enters a world of beauty, expresses himself from his heart, feels the joy of doing things alone, learns to take care of others, develops his mind and makes his body strong. ”1. What does the writer say more about in the text?A. Life full of music.B. Life without music.C. The importance of music.D. The development of music.2. From the text, we learn that many people ________.A. don't realize the importance of musicB. get along quite well without musicC. go to the concert instead of enjoying musicD. think music would be less exciting than films3. What does the underlined word “melody”in the second paragraph mean in the text?A. Flying.B. Looking.C. Singing.D. Living.4. From the last paragraph,we learn that music ________.A. is very important, especially for childrenB. is very necessary for our everyday lifeC. can make our life exciting and dramaticD. can enter into another beautiful worldⅥ. 语法填空阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

She comes from India and speaks quite differently from British people.Text 2W: Our computers are down.M: I'm afraid I'm not following you. What does that mean?W: That means they're not working.W: Can you catch the lady's meaning?M: No, I can't. She is speaking so fast that I can't follow her.Text 4M: Are there any differences between British English and American English?W: Certainly. For example, the Br itish say “I have to go back now”, while Americans say “I've got to go back now”.M: Are there any differences in spelling?W: Yeah. For example, “color” is often spelt c-o-l-o-u-r in British English.Text 5W: Hi, Lin Feng. Long time no see. How are you getting along with your English recently?M: Hi, Linda. I've been learning English with an American teacher's help. He told me to listen to the VOA every day, and I've made great progress.W: Congratulations.Text 6M: I give up! I simply can't learn English. I try and try but don't make any progress.W: I know it's hard, but maybe it'll help if we spend more time practising together.M: That's a good idea. But what kind of practice can we try?W: Well, why don't we practise these dialogues together?M: That's a good idea. It might improve our spoken English.W: Sure.Text 7W: Excuse me, Mr. Benson. Can I talk to you for a minute?M: Sure, Mary. What can I help you with?W: I'm really having problems in English. I do all my work and come to class, but I'm not making much progress. What do you think I ought to do?M: Maybe it's a little hard for you to learn English, but you are improving. Do you spend much time with Americans?W: No, not really.M: Why don't you try and make an effort? Maybe you could join a club at school. Another thing I'd suggest is not waiting for Americans to invite you somewhere. There's nothing wrong with calling up someone you've met and asking them to go somewhere.W: Those are good ideas. Thank you very much.Text 8M: Excuse me, Miss. I'd like to get some information about the summer course at the English Training Center.W: Yes. The course begins on July 15 and runs until August 20.M: Right, and what courses can we study?W: Well, you have a variety of courses. You have listening and speaking courses, reading and writing. There are also classes in audiovisual training and chances to use the language laboratory as well.M: Right. Do you have a timetable?W: I'm sorry. My workmate isn't here at the moment, so I can't get a timetable for you yet.M: That's OK. And when will the final exams be held?W: At the end of the term. They begin on August 16 and run until August 18.M: You don't look too happy. What seems to be the problem?W: I've got to write a long composition for my English class, and I just can't come up with any ideas, and it is due tomorrow.M: That shouldn't be too difficult. Remember those pictures you were showing me last week? The ones from your voyage last year.W: Sure, I've got them here somewhere.M: Why don't you write about your impressions of the pyramids in Egypt and the camel ride you took?W: That sounds like a good idea. I can also talk about our visit to the North Africa, the Holy Land, and all of the historical places we visited.M: Well, now that you're feeling better, I think I'll be on my way. I've got to finish my composition too.W: Thanks for your help. I'm much more relaxed now and once I get organized, it won't be so difficult.Text 10W: Well, I suppose the schooling system in America and England is not quite the same way I would imagine. For example, John, what age do you start school?M: In America, most people start school at age five. They go to kindergarten. It's a voluntary thing.W: At five, yes.M: I actually went to a state primary school and I started just after my fifth birthday, um... you know most people start at five and then they can leave when they're sixteen, I actually stayed on until I was eighteen.W: So, basically it's more or less the same starting age. But, er... when do you finish in the States?M: Well, we finish, er... you can go to school, most people finish high school. But you can actually leave school legally at the end of the tenth grade which is about sixteen... when you're sixteen.W: So, more or less actually the same thing. And, er... as far as examinations are concerned, I mean, is it, um... I think it's very different, isn't it?M: Well, exams are not quite the same. We don't have as many exams in America as they do in Britain.
