It is common sense that children who walk or cycle to school have a lower risk of obesity than those by car. But driving your youngsters to the gates could also cause their academic work to suffer.
Researchers found children who were driven to school, or who took public transport, had poorer concentration levels than those who took a more active route such as walking or cycling.
The joint study by researchers at two Danish universities found the regular exercise could advance a student up to half a year in their studies. Children who were driven to school, or who took public transport, performed less well in a test measuring concentration levels, than those who had walked or cycled.
The results surprised the researchers, as their hypothesis(假设) originally focused on the effects of eating breakfast and lunch on pupils’ ability to concentrate.
“The exercise one uses to tran sport oneself to school is reflected in the level of concentration one has about four hours later,” Niels Egelund, a co- author of the report said. “The results showed that having breakfast and lunch has an impact, but not very much compared to having exer cise.”
“As a third-grade pupil, if you exercise and bike to school, your ability to concentrate increases to the
equivalent of someone half a year further in their studies,” he added.
In the survey, taken by 19, 527 pupils aged five to 19 years old, participants were asked about their exercise habits and were then given a basic test measuring their concentration.
“Most people know the feeling of being refreshed after having exercised, but it is surprising that the effect lasts for so long,” Egelund said.
Previous research from the university of Montreal has found that exercise helps our brains make better use of oxygen. It may also reduce mental fatigue(疲劳) and sharpen your thinking in between gym sessions. And last week Swedish researchers said they found that muscular boys will live longer than their weaker friends.
And even if they are overweight by the time they get to adulthood, those with stronger muscles tend to live longer.

The meal usually begins with a set of at least four cold dishes,to be followed by the main courses of hot meat and vegetable dishes.Soup then will be served (unless in Guangdong style restaurants) to be followed by staple food ranging from rice, noodles to dumplings. If you wish to have
your rice to go with other dishes, you should say so in good time, for most of the Chinese choose to have the staple food
at last or have none of them at all.
Perhaps one of the things that surprises a Western visitor
most is that some of the Chinese hosts like to put food into
the plates of their guests. In formal dinners, there are always “public” chopsticks and spoons for this purpose,
but some hosts may use their own chopsticks. This is a sign
of genuine friendship and politeness. It is always polite
to eat the food.If you do not eat it,just leave the food
in the plate.
People in China tend to over-order food, for they will find
it embarrassing if all the food is consumed. When you have
had enough, just say so.Or you will always overeat!

Is carrying a few extra pounds into your senior years healthy? Advice has been mixed. Now, two studies published this month attempt to better define the ideal weight for fitness and longevity for adults over age 60.
The main point is that you don’t need to worry about being slightly overweight, as long as that extra weight is maintained at a consistent level. However, being very overweight is detrimental to health, and exercising to lose body fat and to gain muscle mass is always beneficial.
Determining the ideal weight for older people has been a pursuit, with researchers looking for what weight is not too thin, but not too fat. Studies have suggested that being slightly overweight can be protective.
For example, a 2001 study by researchers at Yale University found that moderately overweight senior adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 —two points higher than the BMI of 25 that defines being overweight — lived longer than seniors who were either thinner or heavier. There’s a fine line here, though, because carrying extra pounds is a risk factor for many types of cancer and other diseases. And, according to the researchers behind the two new studies, the general public has misinterpreted the Yale findings to mean that being very overweight is healthy.
One new study, published this month in the American Journal of Epidemiology by researchers at The Ohio State University in Columbus, found that seniors who maintained a stable, slightly overweight status survived most probably over the 16 years surveyed. Those seniors who had a so-called healthy weight going into the study (a BMI between 18.5 and 25) and who gained weight, but stayed below BMI 25, had a slight possibility of surviving over the study period.
People in the obese group, with a BMI higher than 35 and who continued to gain weight, faced the worst among all the groups in the study. But next-to-last were normal-weight
people who lost weight, but this was likely because they became sick, the researchers said.
The second study, appearing this month in the journal Obesity, was conducted by researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., and supports intentional weight loss among senior adults. Whether weight loss is beneficial has been debated because of this concept that being overweight is protective.
In short, the researchers found that physical activity and weight loss for overweight and obese adults resulted in lower cardiovascular (心血管) disease risk and improved mobility. This finding supports previous studies demonstrating that exercise builds muscle and bone strength, improves balance and coordination, prevents falls and enables seniors to enjoy a more active lifestyle, they said.
Hui Zheng of Ohio State, the lead author of first study, said that the negative effects of obesity on health are greatest for young people.
59. The underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.

B. people with a BMI of 27 or more are classified as overweight
C. senior adults with a BMI of 27 lived longer than those either thinner or heavier
D. carrying extra pounds is a risk factor for many types of cancer and other diseases
61. What can we learn from the two new studies?
A. It’s difficult for seniors who have a so-called
healthy weight to have a long life span.
B. It’s most dangerous for normal-weight people to
continue to lose weight.
C. The two studies are based on and in agreement with
previous studies.
D. The second one recommends overweight and obese adults work out and lose weight.
62. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. The negative effects of obesity on health are greatest for young people.
B. Being slightly overweight may bring some health benefits for seniors.
C. It is harmless for overweight young people to continue to gain weight.
D. People at a healthy weight should intentionally put on extra weight.

It might not come as a surprise that China fell behind Western countries in a recent UN report on global happiness. China was only ranked 112th happiest country out of 156 in
the UN’s World Happiness Report in April.
The happiest country, it seems, is Denmark, closely followed by three more northern European countries- Finland, Norway, and the Netherlands.
But apart from income and lifestyle differences, there are also cultural reasons for this divide. They show that Chinese people and Westerners have different perceptions of happiness.
According to a survey conducted by CCTV, income levels most affected Chinese people’s sense of well- being (55.5 percent), followed by health (48.9 percent) and quality of marriage or love life (32 percent).
It seems that all these criteria are lagging(落后)in China, and that the obvious explanation for greater happiness in the West is higher incomes.
But not so, says Professor John Helliwell, an American economist at the University of British Columbia and coauthor of the UN report.
According to Helliwell, low-income individuals may
experience an initial jump in happiness when their money increases, but this feeling decreases as they adapt to their new circumstances. He stresses the example of the US, where, despite GDP figures rising consistently for the past 50 years, happiness has been steadily declining.
This is because people desire more than money and material wealth. “To be happy, we need to feel connection, trust and meaningful relationships,” explains Helliwell.
Dr Deborah Swallow, a UK expert on cultural diversity however, believes there are some differences in the perceptions of happiness in the West and China.
“For North Americans and Europeans, happiness tends to be defined in terms of personal achievement, and is best predicted by self-esteem” she says.
“For East Asians, happiness tends to be defined in terms of interpersonal connectedness, and is best predicted by how well involved the self is in a social network.”
Living standards are not necessarily the last word on happiness, as sugg ested by China’s Urban Happiness Ranking 2017, released by the Hong Kong-based China Institute of City Competitiveness in July.
According to the survey’s results, Qingdao in Shandong province is China’s happiest city with a score of 95.08.
Surprisingly, Ch ina’s first-tier cities scored relatively low, with Shenzhen ranking 94th, Beijing 96th and Shanghai in 99th position.
63. According to the passage, which of the following about happiness is Correct?
A. People’s sense of happiness has nothing to do with money.
B. People’s sense of happiness is determined by many factors.
C. A man who has a strong social relationship is sure to be happy.
D. A man with healthy body must have the most happiness.
64. Which of the following statements might Professor John
Helliwell agree with ?
A. Happiness is an inner feeling and will not be influenced by the outer factors.
B. Poor people may become happier when their income increases.
C. Americans’ sense of happiness has been increasing in the recent years.
D. People’s sense o f happiness is largely determined by income in the west.
65. Which of the following statements is true?
A. In general, people in West are happier than people in East.
B. In East Asian, happiness has much to do with personal factors.
C. People’s opinions of happiness is completely different
between the West and the East.

people in the poorer area.

The day the letter arrived from my university telling me how much I owed them for my first semester, I felt a lump forming in my throat. I hadn’t even started my degree and already I was in debt. But although the sum was unsettling, I had peace of mind: I had taken out a loan that would cover the next three years of tuition fees and living expenses.
A government body in the UK, the Student Loans Company, provides loans to students whose parents cannot afford to cover the costs themselves. Students forward this amount to the university in advance and agree to repay the loan when they begin their first job. For me, it was a lot of money –around &6,000(60,860 Yuan) per year in total –and much more than I had ever been responsible for. I would receive a couple of thousand pounds per semester –half for tuition fees, half for living costs.
Even though I will be paying off my debt for a long time, I don’t regret my decision.
Having a loan taught me a lot about money management, which I would not have learned otherwise. Each term I paid my tuition fees in one payment, but I also received my loan for living costs in one payment. It was up to me to organize
how I would spend this.
I divided the amount to calculate my weekly budget and it was important that I tried not to overspend. I had to be disciplined and keep a close eye on my expenditure. Food, clothes and going out are the main things students spend money on.
With a loan, students have total financial freedom. Instead of having someone looking over their shoulder, they must make every financial decision for themselves.
This year, university fees were tripled. But when it comes to money management, perhaps this generation will be the smartest yet.

参考范文:A young person, especially a girl student, radiant with beauty and full of life, has all the favor granted by God. Any attempt to make up would be self-defeating.
I have a good friend, Jenny by name. Being so beautiful and charming, she always had a lot of admirers she was. As one of her “fans” told me , they like her not only because
of her beautiful look but because they were struck by her pure and fine natural inner quality. But later on, in order to make herself more attractive, she began to wear magnificent dress and expensive jewels. Wherever she went, she never forgot to make up. To her great astonishment however, many of her admirers broke up with her. After hearing what the “fan” said to me, she realized what had happened.
As long as one finds where one stands, one knows how to package oneself, just as a product established its brand by the right packaging.。
