Introduction
Welcome to MME101 – Business Academic Skills. The aim of this unit is to develop
the reading, writing and analytical skills needed to be able to engage successfully
in academic study at Deakin University. These skills are also vital for career and life
success.
Communication skills in the form of reading and writing are important to your
career. The focus on your ability to read and write effectively will assist you to be
able to speak and write clearly, confidently and coherently. The organisation who
employs you as a Deakin graduate will expect that your written skills in particular
will be based on objective information from credible authors. Certainly there are
other skills essential for career success:
•problem solving
•analytical thinking
•learning skills
•interpersonal skills
•group collaboration skills.
You will develop and enhance these skills during your studies at Deakin.
Consider yourself as both a reader and a writer in becoming a university student.
You will read extensively to learn what others say about the topics you study and
understand and analyse the view of others. During your Deakin studies you will
write reports, academic essays, short answers, case studies and deliver
presentations for tutors, assignment markers, study groups, and perhaps
postgraduate applications in the future. You are encouraged to take advantage of
your studies to acquire reading and writing skills that form the foundation of
professional knowledge and to build on these skills to become the professional that
employers will want to have in their organisations.
This study guide is arranged into a number of topics. Each topic comprises:
•an introduction
•learning objectives
•key skills
•learning resources
•key terms and concepts
•learning content.
For this first week, following introductory exercises to work with other students,
your tutor will present the unit guide, comprising the unit outline, calendar/planner
and assessments. These important documents give you an overview of the unit,
the learning objectives, details of assignments and other important information
related to the unit.
