2018年吉林省实验中学高考英语模拟试卷(5月份)

一、阅读理解

1. A year ago August, Dave Fuss lost his job driving a truck for a small company in west Michigan. His

wife, Gerrie, was still working in the local school cafeteria, but work for Dave was scarce, and the price of everything was rising. The Fusses were at risk of joining the millions of Americans who have lost their homes in recent years. Then Dave and Gerrie received a timely gift﹣﹣$7, 000, a legacy (遗产) from their neighbors Ish and Arlene Hatch, who died in an accident. "It really made a difference when we were going under financially." says Dave.

But the Fusses weren't the only folks in Alto and the neighboring town of Lowell to receive unexpected legacy

from the Hatches. Dozens of other families were touched by the Hatches' generosity. In some cases, it was a few thousand dollars; in other, it was more than $100, 000.

It surprised nearly everyone that the Hatches had so much money , more than $3 million﹣they were an elderly couple who lived in an old house on what was left of the family farm.

Children of the Great Depression, Ish and Arlene were known for their habit of saving. They thrived on (喜欢)comparison shopping and would routinely go from store to store, checking prices before making a new purchase.

Through the years, the Hatches paid for local children to attend summer camp when their parents couldn't afford it. "Ish and Arlene never asked if you needed anything, " says their friend Sandy Van Weelden, "They could see things they could do to make you happier, and they would do them.

Even more extraordinary was that the Hatches had their farmland distributed. It was the Hatches' wish that their legacy﹣﹣a legacy of kindness as much as one of dollars and cent ﹣﹣should enrich the whole community (社区)and last for generations to come.

Neighbors helping neighbors ﹣﹣that was Ish and Arlene Hatch's story.

2. What will power your house in the future? Nuclear, wind, or solar power? According to scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, it might be leaves ﹣ but artificial (人造的)ones.

Natural leaves are able to change sunlight and water into energy. It is known as photosynthesis (光合作用).Now researchers have found a way to imitate this seemingly simple process.

The artificial leaf developed by Daniel Nocera and his colleagues at MIT can be seen as a special silicon chip with catalysts (催化剂).Similar to natural leaves, it can split water into hydrogen and oxygen when put into a bucket of water. The hydrogen and oxygen gases are then stored in a fuel cell, which uses those two materials to produce electricity, located either on top of a house or beside the house.

Though the leaf is only about the shape of a poker card, scientists claimed that it is promising to be an inexpensive source of electricity in developing countries. "One can imagine villages in India and Africa not long from now purchasing an affordable basic power system based on this technology, " said Nocera at a conference of the American Chemical Society.

The artificial leaf is not a new idea. The first artificial leaf was invented in 1997 but was too expensive and unstable for practical use. The new leaf, by contrast, is made of cheap materials, easy to use and highly stable. In laboratory studies, Nocera showed that an artificial leaf prototype (原型) could operate continuously for at least 45 hours without a drop in activity.

The wonderful improvements come from Nocera's recent discovery of several powerful, new and inexpensive catalysts. These catalysts make the energy transformation inside the leaf more efficient with water and sunlight. Right now, the new leaf is about 10times more efficient at carrying out photosynthesis than a natural one. Besides, the device can run in whatever water is available; that is, it doesn't need pure water. This is important for some countries that don't have access to pure water.

With the goal to "make each home its own power station" and "give energy to the poor", scientists believe that the new technology could be widely used in developing countries, especially in India and rural China.

A.c,b,a,d.

B.c,a,b,d.

C.b,c,a,d.

D.c,a,d,b.

(2)The purpose of the scientists at MIT in developing the new artificial leaf is to________.
