The pie charts present information about the changes in the proportions of factors that influence the UK students to choose a college or university.
In general, suitable courses and degrees were the most important reason for choosing a school, taking up 40% in 1982 and 34% in 2002. In addition to the suitable courses and degrees, there are five factors that influence students’ choice, namely, costs, admission criteria, reputation of institution, location, facilities.
As is revealed in the charts, the concern about reputation of the institution noticeably increased from 5% in 1982 to 25% in 2002. Similarly, the proportion in amenities, social activities and sports facilities factor rose from 5% to 18%.
In contrast, costs factor lost its influenc e on students’ choices and the proportion suffer a dramatic decrease (28% in 1982 and 5% in 2002 respectively). When it comes to location, the proportion slightly declined from 19% to 16%. The admission criteria factor was the least important factor for students to concern, which was also the most stable one.
