Mount Langshan
Together with six other small mountains alongside the Yangtze,Mount Wolf is only 7km from the city proper. The Langshan Scenic Area is included among the major scenic resorts of Jiangsu province.
There are two saying recording the name of the mountain. One saying is that the shape of the mountain resembles a crouching wolf. The other comes from a legend.Long long ago,an old white wolf became a monster and occupied the whole mountains area, harassing the local people. One day,a Buddhist Mendicant arrived from afar and decided to punish the wolf for its evil conduct. He came towards the Demon Wolf, begging for a piece of land to rest his legs.“No problem. How big a piece do you need?”said the wolf.“Oh,quite small,”said the Mendicant,“I need only a piece as small as my robe.”The wolf burst into a laughter:“Hahahaha.......All the land around the mountain belongs to me.This means nothing to me at all.”
The wolf spirit had no sooner finished his word than the Mendicant took off his robe and threw it into the sky.The robe grew larger and larger until it covered the whole area of the five mountains. This shook the wolf into a stupor. As a matter of fact, the Mendicant was no other than the Bodhisattva Dasheng himself!
The wolf became aware of the seriousness of the situation and fell at the foot of the Mendicant, pleadind:"Mercy Buddha, please spare my humble life.I'll leave the mountain to you,but would you be so kind as to my name here for the mountain?" The sympathetic Mendicant gave consent, seeing that the old wolf was so reluctant to depart from the place where he had stayed for quite a long time. That is why the mountain was eventually called Mount Wolf and from then on there have been no more wolves in the area.
Luo Bingwang's Tomb
Luo Bingwang, one of " the Four Wits of the Early Tang Times" occupies an important place in the history of Chinese literature. He wrote the popular denunciation for General Xu Jingye, the rebel leader against Empress Wu Zetian who turned her husband's Tang Dynasty into her own matriarchy. After the defeat of the redellious expedition, Luo Bingwang fled to the White Water Marsh where he remained secluded until the end of his life. His tombstone and bones were discovered at the northeastern suburb of Nantong during the Ming Dynasty 400years ago. They were later moved to the foot of Mt. Langshan.
Huchao terrace
It used to be called Huchao Terrace at the gate of the Guangjiao Temple.Huchao means embankment against tides.Four hundred years ago,the foot of the mountain was dipped in the Yangtze River. An embankment was built with rocks to ward off the harmful tides. In ancient times, this terrace served as a rostrum for the officers to review the navy.
Jingang Gate
The mountain gate is called Jingang Gate,or Jingang Hall,or simply Grand-view Pavilion.Jingang,or Vajrapani in Sanskrit, means warriors of the Buddha.Inside the gate hall there stand four warriors of the Buddha, whose faces are respectively red, green, yellow and white. They are known as heavenly guardians in charge of the east, the west, the south and the north. Each of them holds an object, namely,a sword,a string instrument, an umbrella and a serpent. They altogether symbolize wind, harmony, rain and dmoothness,as an expression of the people's wish for favorable weather because China has long been a country of agriculture. The big-bellied figure is the laughing Buddha whose name is Maitreya and standing on the opposite side is Weito, the stern-faced Buddha.According to the legend,Maitreya and Weito used to be the head monks in two different temples.Maitreya, generous and hospitable, was a poor manager of his temple. But Weito, capable and economical, did not know how to receive people. As a result, neither of them succeeded in running his temple well.Tathagata, realizing both their advantages and disadvantages, put the two monks into one temple, which enabled the two monks to combine their advantages.Because of their cooperative and complimentary work, the temple has been prosperous day by day. That is why both Maitreya and Weito are enshrined in almost all the Chinese Buddhist temples, one as the receptionist and the other as the house keeper.
Lunzang Hall and Dabei Hall
The two halls are symmetrically located. The eaves resemble a pair of dragon horns while the Jingang Hall looks like the dragon's head. The giant structure inside Lunzang,6 m in height and 5 m in radius,is called Wheel of Buddhist sutras and scriptures for the laymen to read. From then on,it was believed that,to save time and effort, you could cover one book of the sutra by pushing one turn of the wheel. This Buddhist wheel itself is a piece of art work,of which the upper engravings are the seven different Buddhist images of Tathagata(Sakuamuni) and the lower carvings are the eight mighty Arhats(Buddhist saints).Avalokitesvara, the Goddess of Mercy,is
