情态动词导学案
Teaching aims:
Complete the basic understanding of the modal verb (can/ could/ may/ might/ will/ shall/ should/ must); students are able to master the function of “modal verbs+have done”
Step1 Attention-raising input tasks:
Material 1:
M=Mum, S=Sara, P=Peter
(When Sara came home from work, she found her mother in an anxious state.)
S: What is wrong, Mum? You seem upset.
M: It is your younger sister Jill. She should have been here an hour ago.
S: Don’t worry, Mum! It is not all that late and she may not realize how late it is. I think she must be here soon.
(Just then Sara’s brother Peter came into the kitchen.)
P: What is up? Mum is on the phone and she seems as though she is going to cry.
S: It is Jill. She should have reached home by now and Mum’s getting anxious.
P: You need not feel so anxious Mum! You know what teenager girls are like. I am sure she can’t be in danger.
M: I can’t help but be concerned. I have just rung Lucy and she said Jill left her outside the cinema ages ago to get the bus home. I think she must have trouble. If she is safe, she can’t stay outsides so long.
P: Well, the bus service is not very frequent in the evenings. She may have missed one and is waiting for another. Have you tried phoning her on her mobile?
M: Yes, but there is no reply. That made me even more worried. I think something must have happened to Jill.
Do you think we should call the police?
S: Calm down, Mum! You may make yourself ill. She may have switched her mobile phone off in the cinema and forgotten to switch it back again. Or it may need to be charged.
(Later, the phone rang.)
M: Oh, my Jill! Where are you? Why not answer my phone?
J: Mum. My phone is missing. I think you must worry about me, so I lend the phone.
M: Come back, it is too late. It may be left in the cinema.
J: No, it can’t have been left in the cinema. I have gone and asked.…

2 The class is given a dilemma situation
You have seen a good friend cheating in an important test, and asked to give guesses to account for his behavior and work out the solution. Students are directed to include modal verbs (might, should, must, can, could, etc) in their speech.
