They need to make their income meet the cost of living ; so many people plan a family budget . A budget is a list of monthly expenses . Experts in kinetics , in their study of body motions as related to speech , hope to discover new methods of communication .
0513-411、Ceasing to Wear TiesIt's useless. It's dirty. It spreads disease. That's why the British Medical Association in the UK recently called for hospital doctors to stop wearing ties. That leads to another question. Why does anyone wear a tie? Ties serve no purpose. They do not cover any part of your body and keep you warm. They always seem to get covered in food stains. Perhaps that is the purpose of the tie. It lets everyone know what you just ate.Ties have an odd history. Soldiers from Croatia, in Eastern Europe, served as mercenaries (雇佣军) in various conflicts in the 17th century. They were identified by brightly colored pieces of silk worn around the neck. Known as cravats(围巾), these became a popular fashion item in France and eventually evolved into the tie. It's an interesting story, but it doesn't tell us why men want to put useless pieces of cloth or silk around their necks. The answer seems to be about identification(身份证明). In the 19th-century Britain, ties were used by universities, military regiments (团), sports clubs, schools and gentleman's clubs. Each tie was in a particular set of colors which identified the wearer as a member of that organization. Wearing ties was also the mark of Britain's most powerful classes. That made the tie itself a symbol of power and respect. And that led it to be adopted by a much larger class-the business class. You cannot wear a tie if you work with machinery, so wearing a tie became a sign that you were a man who used his brain to make a living, rather than his hands. It showed you were serious. It showed you were a professional. It meant that everyone who wanted a job in business had to wear one. It was just impossible to take seriously a man who did not wear a piece of colored silk around his neck. This is how millions of people came to wear ties across the world. Is there a future for ties? The signs are not promising. Many political leaders, including British Prime Minister Tony Blair, now go without ties.Paragraph 6 ________.【单选题】A.Origin of the tieB.British tieselessness of the tieD.Old-fashioned tiesE.Role of the tieF.Signs of a tieless era正确答案:F答案解析:第六段的主题句是第二句:The signs are notpromising.这里the signs后边省略了of the future of ties。

When we pare them with adults learning a foreign language, we often find this interesting fact. A little child without knowledge or experience often sueedsin a plete mastery of the language. A grown-up person with fully developed mental powers, in most case, may end up with a faulty and inexact mand. What aounts for this difference?Despite other explanations, the real answer in my opinion lies partly in the child himself, partly in the behavior of the people around him. In the first place, the time of learning the mother tongue is the most favorable of all, namely, the first years of life. A child hears it spoken from morning till night and, what is more important, always in its genuine form, with the right pronunciation, right intonation, right use of words and right structure. He drinks in all the words and expressions, which e to him in a flash, ever-bubbling spring. There is no resistance: there is perfect assimilation. Then the child has, as it were, private lessons all the year round, while an adult language-student has each week a limited number of hours, which he generally shares with others. The child has another advantage: he hears the language in all possible situations, always aompanied by the right kind of gestures and facial expressions. Here there is nothing unnatural, such as is often found in language lessons in schools, when one talks about ice and snow in June or scorching heat in January. And what a child hears is generally what immediately interests him. Again and again, when his attempts at speech are suessful, his desires are understood and fulfilled.。

When you think of a robot, do you envision a shiny, metallic device having the same general shape as a human being, performing humanlike functions, and responding to your questions in a monotone voice accentuated by high-pitched tones and beeps? This is the way many of us imagine a robot, but in the real world, a robot is not humanoid at all. Instead a robot often is a voiceless, box-shaped machine that efficiently carries out repetitive or dangerous functions usually performed by humans. Today’s robot is more than an automatic machine that performs one task again and again. A modern robot is programmed with varying degrees of artificial intelligence—that is, a robot contains a computer program that tells it how to perform tasks associated with human intelligence, such as reasoning, drawing conclusions, and learning from past experience.A robot does not possess a human shape for the simple reason that a two-legged robot has great difficulty remaining balanced. A robot does, however, move from place to place on wheels and axles that roll and rotate. A robot even has limbs that swivel and move in combination with joints and motors. To find its way in its surroundings1, a robot utilizes various built-in sensors. Antennae attached to the robot’s base detect anything they bump into. If the robot starts to teeter as it moves on an incline, a gyroscope or a pendulum inside it senses the vertical differential. To determine its distance from an object and how quickly it will reach the object, the robot bounces beams of laser light and ultrasonic sound waves off obstructions in its path2. These and other sensors constantly feed information to the computer, which then analyzes the informati on and corrects or adjusts the robot’s actions. As science and technology advance, the robot too will progress in its functions and use of artificial-intelligence programs. 1.To find its way in its surroundings...:为了在周围找到路……2.the robot bounces beams of laser light and ultrasonic sound waves off obstructions inits path:机器人发射激光束和超声波,反射到障碍物上(以此来探知路径)。

职称英语《综合类》阅读理解习题xx职称英语《综合类》阅读理解习题xxTechnology Transfer in GermanyWhen it es to translating basic research intoindustrial suess, few nations can match Germany. Since the 1940s, the nation's vast industrial base has been fed constant stream of new ideas and expertise from science. And though German prosperity (繁荣) has faltered () over the past decade because of the huge cost of unifying east and west as well as the global economic decline, it still has an enviable record for turning ideas into profit.Much of the reason for that suess is the Fraunhofer Society, a work of research institutes that exists solely to solve industrial problems and create sought-after technologies. But today the Fraunhofer institutes have petition.Universities are taking an ever larger role in technology transfer, and technology parks are springing up all over. These efforts are being plemented by the federal programmes for pumping money into start-up panies.Such a strategy may sound like a recipe for economic suess, but it is not without its critics. These people worry that favouring applied research will mean neglecting basic science, eventually starving industry of fresh ideas. If every scientist starts thinking like an entrepreneur(企业家), the argument goes, then the traditional principles of university research being curiosity-driven, free and widely available will suffer. Others claim that many of the programmes to promote technology transfer are a waste of money because half the small businesses that are promoted are bound to go bankrupt within a few years. While this debate continues, new ideas flow at a steady rate from Germany'sresearch works, which bear famous names such as Helmholtz, Max Planck and Leibniz. Yet it is the fourth work, the Fraunhofer Society, that plays the greatest role in technology transfer.Founded in 1949, the Fraunhofer Society is now Europe's largest organisation for applied technology, and has 59 institutes employing 12,000 people. It continues to grow. Last year, it swallowed up the Heinrich Hertz Institute for Communication Technology in Berlin. Today, there are even Fraunhofers in the US and Asia.1.What factor can be attributed to German prosperity?A.Technology transfer.B.Good management.C.Hard work.D.Fierce petition.2.Which of the following is NOT true of traditional university research?A.It is free.B.It is profit-driven.C.It is widely available.D.It is curiosity-driven.3.The Fraunhofer Society is the largest organisationfor applied technologyin.A.C.Europe.D.Africa.4.When was the Fraunhofer Society founded?A.In 1940.st year.C.After the unification.D.In 1949.5.The word "expertise" in line 3 could be best replaced byA."experts".B."scientists".C."scholars".D."special knowledge".。
